Digital Foundry Split/Second demo PS3vs360

"Split/Second: Velocity sees an evolution of the excellent tech that powered Pure, brought to us this time in a high velocity Burnout-style of game with a twist: it's not just your opponents on the road you need to do battle with, it's the environment itself. Similar to Burnout, a power meter gradually fills as you perform skillful racing - whether drifting through corners or drafting behind opponents. However, while Burnout concentrated on car-to-car battling, Split/Second opts for a different approach."

Can't wait to play this game

darthv725820d ago

If you are into fast paced action racing then this game is for you. No matter if you have the ps3 or 360 version as this game is just pure (no pun) fun.

I especially like the simple pick up and play rather than the elaborate sim style racing offered in forza and gt. Nothing wrong with those games as I like them too.

Time to time I just want to play a game of quick and dirty racing. No having to worry about drift ratio or tuning the front or rear ends to compensate for resistance. This game (as well as blur) are my kind of racing.

Alcon Caper5820d ago

"Statistically though, in the sample above, Xbox 360 produces around four per cent torn frames while PS3 is at 11 per cent."

Just a quote. Waiting unjustified disagrees...

stonecold15820d ago

720 p while 360 version runs at 672 sub both look like great games thought

Faztkiller5820d ago

2 years ago it would have been the complete opposite how things have changed both look great

HolyOrangeCows5820d ago

I'll take the native 720p and unnoticeable drawbacks.

Since these guys are the so called videogame tech experts, they must know that demos are highly compressed and not indicative of the final product. Yet they feel the need to grace us with more demo face-offs then full retail game face-offs.

One example would be Batman:AA, which blew up the internetz for its demo comparison, even though you could see macroblocks in the cutscenes revealing the high compression and performed better on 360 by a couple of frames. Then the full retail product released and was far superior on PS3, but where was DF's comparison on that?

I suspect they also realize that PS3 is made for uncompressed data while 360 is made for compressed data, which is why their fanboy a$$e$ jump to the demos every time and ignore the final retail game comparisons!

PS: I never even read the article so I don't even know who won. Just an observation about DF!

hamoor5820d ago

what compressing you are talking about?
most demos look exactly like the full game
"PS3 is made for uncompressed data while 360 is made for compressed data"
thats the stupidest thing i ever read on n4g
even on the blue-ray compressing is needed, then why mgs 4 didnt have native 1080P cut-scenes???

hamoor5820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

did i mention that the dvd9 is bigger than blue-ray?
oh and you got that wrong,mgs4 is 7x bigger than any 360 game

mrv3215820d ago

BLU-RAY is bigger than DVD9 BTW, and thus PS3 doesn't have as much compression, please note FF13.

Also on PSN developers pay per gig of download, on XBL there's no cost so prehaps they don't compress it by as much, it also provides incentive to release it first on XBL that way more people download it for free.

JihadJoe5820d ago

mgs4 rendered the cutscenes in real time. You can even confirm by having any camouflage on as snake and you can shake the controller to turn it off during any cutscene that involved snake in it.

mrv3215820d ago

Considering the size of MGS4 I bet they just recorded all the cut scene in every possible alteration :P

We're comparing demos now?! Wow...

BeaArthur5820d ago

My thoughts exactly. Must be a slow news day.

joydestroy5820d ago

yeah it has been a pretty slow day. i'm hoping the RDR reviews are gonna start getting pumped out soon.

Moentjers5820d ago

must be something wrong these days, the 5 hottest stories are all about Sony...

Jack Klugman5820d ago

"it's the Xbox 360 build that runs a touch more smoothly. It also exhibits lower levels of screen-tear, though the human eye is unlikely to really tell the difference between the two versions - in this level, at least. Statistically though, in the sample above, Xbox 360 produces around four per cent torn frames while PS3 is at 11 per cent. "
I'll take a smoother game, especially on a racer over a few more lines of vertical resolution that will not even be noticable once upscaled.

Winner 360.. Again.

weazel5820d ago

Cool to see Quincy hanging around in the console morgue again....

hamoor5820d ago

uncharted 2
gow iii
kilzone 2
mgs 4
i guess the ps3 IS the real winner, again and again and again

Blurs servers were the main issue but would love to see it return.

AZRoboto3201d ago

I'll point out that these games are all from the X360/PS3 era - they've already had HD releases when they first came out. Split/Second and Blur - with the crazy vehicle physics capable today, why would we not want sequels to them?

The other games, all a matter of opinion of course, but... thank you for your ads between every single game. /s

TheDCD3200d ago

Problem with sequels is that they aren't very likely. Activision dropped Blur like a bad habit, and Disney isn't doing games anymore. So I'll happily take the originals.

Relientk773200d ago

Remember Me
Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Miss_Weeboo3200d ago

Alan Wake
Lost Odyssey
Demon Souls

TheDCD3200d ago

As much as I'd kill for a Demon's Souls remake, isn't likely. We'll probably get Bloodborne 2 instead.

PhoenixUp3200d ago

Dafuq kinda title is that? These games were already released on HD consoles though...

Man I loved Split Second... I wonder why it never got a sequel?

Nekroo913883d ago

Didn't sold enough copies, the studio was reduced, etc. You know how things work.

barb_wire3883d ago

Disney shut the studio down. Damn shame too, awesome game.

Roccetarius3883d ago

As it was said, Disney shut it down due to it not being successful enough. With that said, a sequel could definitely have improved on Split Second's arcade madness.

Paytaa3883d ago

Split/Second and Blur were the two most under rated racers last gen. They were great games and wish there were potential sequels.

Roccetarius3883d ago (Edited 3883d ago )

Personally, i prefer games like that, more so Split Second than Blur. I also remember when i was playing Destruction Derby Raw back in the day.

GRIP is a game going to early access on Steam, because there wasn't enough people backing it on Kickstarter (unfortunately).

That's one of my only hopes for racers i enjoy.

Rookie_Monster3883d ago

Hoping for BC as I still got the XB1 disc and still play it time to time. This and Midnight Club LA along with Project Gotham Racing 4 are hidden racing gems from the X360 days.
