Unfortunately, Windows has still the most support from devs, however Steam for Mac is a step in right direction.

Obviously Linux is better as an OS than Microsoft for the one fact everyone seems to have overlooked ... Linux is an OS, Microsoft is a company ;)

As much as i dislike microsoft windows 7 is an amazing operating system

IMO Linux (Ubuntu) is better than Windows on anything except for when it comes to software support, which sucks, since it's really important.

If some day in the future, all games are supported on Linux, I will make a permanent switch, it's such a good OS in anything from stability to speed. And it is really fun to use.

I use ubuntu for websurfing and to watch videos...that's basically it. I don't game in my laptop and if you are a gamer...stay away. The sad truth is that people who game on linux besides using Cedega must be NASA engineers to understand it and get it right. Is sad that at this stage someone hasn't got it together enough to make it a simple desktop OS available to everyone no matter their computer background. Nevertheless is the right OS for people tired of virus and spyware.

Linux is far simpler than windows imo, I caught on to linux right away when I first used it a few months ago, it's not difficutl like people make it out to be.

Linux - Security through obscurity, this goes for macs but not linux, you have to have the password of the root user to do most things that would change what your computer does, and without that password you're not getting far.

most linux distros are free as both free $ and free as in freedom, you can't freely change windows any way you like but you can linux. Q. But I'm not a programmer! THIS DOESNT APPLY TO ME! Yes it does, every application you use firefox notepad even your games have to be programmed by someone, if they can be programmed easier on another platform they can be better, linux made me decide to learn C# (still am working on learning it) it's a great platform and I love to mess with things in my computer. If you've ever used the windows command line you'd know it's limited and somewhat of a train wreck, I recently needed to move all the .png files from my pictures folder to another one, I knew how to do it in linux but doing it in windows was difficult since it was a odd command, and I couldn't find a good description. With linux it would have been as simple as (if I'm wrong here correct me) (use dir to move to the directory with the pictures) mv *.png new location /r but in windows I had to use this command
cd c:\my pictures\folder
for /s %x IN (*.png) DO %x move "C:\path1\"

It would have been much simpler with linux where there are multiple things.

Linux has came out of the dark ages of computing whether you want to admit it or not, I let my mom use ubuntu on my PC without direction and she was able to figure it out for the most part on her own (note when we first got a computer when I was young I had to show them how to turn it on and it was a big purple button) and if it begins getting a lot of third party support microsoft and apple will HAVE to lower the prices of thier OS substantially.

You may complain about the lack of third party support but more and more people are giving it support, windows emulators are also available, if you want to play games on linux you have two choices, run a virtual box of windows to use those applications, or two use WINE (windows emulator) which emulates windwos, with a large library of available applications it can emulate.

You say programs are difficult to install in linux? lol misconception, most can be installed through a single line in terminal (sudo apt-get install program)and for people that don't use the CLI theres a GUI method available.

Another great thing about linux is the several distros, I've only used ubuntu so far but I plan to try some other distros out in the future.

Everytime I hear someone say they hate linux or say it's useless I burst out in laughter, as you read this, you are using linux as N4G most likely uses a server version of linux to host its website as do most, ever used google? You have, by proxy used linux. Because of this, when Linus Tovalds dies it will have a bigger effect on the face of computing than Bill Gates and Steve Jobs combined, who will develop the kernel then is uncertain, but I'm sure Tovalds has something about it in his will.

boy it sure is easy to tell the people who never had to run any business apps or write thier own programs cause if you did you'd never even thought up somthing so ridulous.

I like Android on my phone, and while I'll always prefer Windows over Linux it's not exactly a bad product to work with. There will always be a first step to something new and people who buy their brand new $1000 gaming rig would like to be rewarded with a system that actually loads and plays the games they want without hassle. Call it being lazy, but I just think of it like buying anything else you'd like to use right away...like having to find "alternative fuel" for your radical new car in a world full of petroleum :)

Truth is Linux is better, it's more secure, it's faster, and it has become a hell of a lot more user friendly recently, all it needs now is developers to make the effort and make decent apps for it other that open office which i now prefer over MS Office btw, and also bring games, watch how quickly how windows dies because they only reason why we all put up with it is because MS has a monopoly on the OS market.
Oh well at least win7 is better than Vista, that should do me until devs pay more attention to Linux.

I really cannot comment on linux, never really got into it bigtime.

Had, 3.1,95,98,98me,winxp,vista,win dows7.

All have their fair share of problems, worst was the bsod.

Winxp i found some love for.

I moved one system to vista, mistake. Was not more stable, infact was worse then xp for me. Driver problems, some companies took to long to write software for it. Some decent hardware never worked correctly with vista that worked perfect with xp.

Atm i'm on Windows 7, and all is well, no re-formats, not many problems tbh. It's a keeper.

So win7 for me. But i'm not a linux user anymore.

Linux is different from Windows, but not necessarily better. It all depends on what you're doing. Many have said that Linux is better for programming, but it isn't necessarily. Once again, it all depends on what you're looking for. Java development is no different on Linux than it is on Windows. I know folks that use Linux to compile Java and swear that it compiles faster. But I'd argue that they need to look at how they've structured their packages and try to clean up their code a bit.

Whomever wrote this article wrote it based purely upon anecdotes and conjecture. There is about 10% truth and 90% "I'm going to be popular on the internet by dissing Microsoft" in it. Windows didn't become dominant by "undercutting Mac on price" as Microsoft's enterprise pricing has never really been all that cheap. Macintosh, as it was known back when Windows 3.11 changed the game, didn't offer nearly the level of functionality and usability that Windows 3.11 did and was not a serious competitor in the enterprise market because it didn't network well. It didn't have the productivity software to support enterprise users, either. Besides, the real OS battle in the mid 90's (LOL way back when) was between Windows 3.11 and IBM's OS2.

At the end of the day Windows is going to remain dominant as long as it is easier to use than Linux. And it is. The average PC user doesn't want the flexibility that choosing one of dozens of Linux versions offers. They want ease of use and predictability. They don't see cost as an issue because PC's come pre-loaded with Windows. So the expense argument isn't all that reasonable as there's never an additional out-of-pocket cost unless you want to upgrade. OEM versions of Windows cost about 30 bucks when purchased with a new PC. A real bargain compared to the headaches of installing, configuring and maintaining Linux.

I have to say that Ubuntu has made inroads in the usability arena. A Linux beginner can get up and running pretty quickly. But it still has a long way to go to unseat Windows.

Linux might be better is some ways but it will always have a tough time competing since the workforce is trained in Windows. Businesses are not going to replace Windows anytime soon. People are also going to get training for what they figure they are going to need to get a job. Those factors will leave Linux with the home users and some mainframe IBM folks.

I'm a PC gamer, so i still use windows. But it is a terrible operating system, using old outdated technologies that were not a good idea when they were invented, and shouldn't still be there now - registry anyone?

Linux is a far better operating system, it would run games better than windows given the proper support, and infact would run anything better. The same with Mac OSX - that will actually run games better than windows, just that you're stuck to their hardware and there is little support for games on that platform.

The windows operating system is poor, especially for the market leader. Microsoft are very capable software developers, just look at other applications they make at an enterprise level, all absolutely brilliant, yet they fall short on a desktop operating system, and it frustrates me so much knowing that other operating systems would make the use out of my hardware better, if it wasn't for them being locked to certain hardware or have little to no support in the area i want.

So for gaming, i'm stuck with windows. :(

The disadvantages are it doesn't have a customer service like Windows or MAC meaning any problems that arise with Linux the user has to deal with the community. Go into a relay chat or forums until the user finds the solution to the problem. Personally I prefer to call the company or e-mail them to get a representative of say company or corporation to help me solve any issues that arise with say product or service.

Is not user-friendly when it comes to downloading you have to go through a dos like program to open packages, use passwords or type special codes, etc.

Not compatible with all the major brands of programs but it relies heavily on generic or non-brand programs.

Windows -Not expensive but its sold at a reasonable price man the MAC is still the most expensive OS out there.

-User-friendly to the point that the consumer doesn't need an extensive computer class anymore. Want free programs go to download.com and pretty much download any program you like.

The problems are the blue or black screen of death, juggling every year as to which anti-virus program to get that will actually will do the job (there is a lot of anti-virus programs that are useless or will make your PC worse). Not very stable or secure and the worst customer service out there. If anything bad happens to say your Windows OS is better to fix it yourself.

Although for the most part I agree with the posts title, there's many things in the post that suggest the author doesn't really know as much as he is letting on in the post. Some might call it false preaching.
I laughed when I read Microsoft instead of Windows.

As far as gamin on Linux goes, it will some improve leaps & bounds as Steam may be adding support for Linux to all their games.

I have Debian Sid (Testing), Arch Linux amd64, and Windows 7 Ultimate. All on different machines. And as a C/C++ programmer AND a gamer, Linux > Windows.

I'll stick to Windows 7. You know, the OS that supports DirectX, which is what the majority of games require. It doesn't matter if Steam supports Linux. They have no control over how games run on a computer, aside from VALVE titles, which are the only titles heading to Steam for Mac/Linux.

what amazes me is the fact that some people on here are saying Linux is better for programming? are you serious? It just depends on what you're programming for. The greatest programming tool known to man, called Visual Studio, is a windows based tool only, so I have no idea what you guys are saying when you say that, but please go ahead and let us know why linux is better for programming....

I personally used Red Hat linux 9.0 back in school to do networking stuff and I hated my life for it. Linux is a pain in the arse to use, but I have not tried Ubuntu so I can't give a fair opinion here. I personally love Windows 7 though.
