i was thinking the same ting but if its one thing i learned is that even if all key people leave IW (which will most likely happen) and they replace the studio with new devs

whatever game they make will still be popular just because of the developers name

Remember when the Medal of Honor developers left EA and went over to Activision to form Infinity Ward? Together Acti and IW made the biggest fsp ever in the history of fps; Call of Duty, while the Medal of Honor series died a slow death with EA, partly due to the fact that the series lost its original creators and developers to Acti.

Fast forward a few years and now the same developers that left EA to form IW at Acti are going back to EA to form a new studio that specializes in fsp. Now the Call of Duty series will die a slow death as Acti tries to continue the series without the original developers and creators.

History have shown us that once the original developers leave things turn to sh@t.

they could have just form an independent studio and make great games! publishers will drool all over them if they are GOLDEN! with that, they can have the highest bidder publish their games! just like QD is doing!

this shows that they simply can't do a thing without a huge publisher backing them aren't they? afterall, they've been clinging behind Acti with their generic shooters! none of this is actually good for gamers! in the end of the day, we gamers will just get another slew of generic shooters from these guys in the wake of trying to beat CoD! this happened before with MoH where we got CoD! now, god knows what else we'll be getting!

Respawn Entertainment IS an independent studio. EA funded them and will publish their games but Respawn will keep control over their IPs, thing that wouldn't been possible with Activision since they own (part of) IW and their IPs.

Respawn Entertainment working with EA huh? Frankly, I don't see any better out of this. The cycle will start again. Don't forget that IW was originally formed when they broke away from EA's MoH milking.

Exactly what I was thinking. Frankly, I think at least a little bit of the blame here has to fall on the shoulders of these devs. I mean they left EA and immediately turned around and signed with Activision. What did they expect was going to happen? And now some of them might be going back to work with EA again?

Maybe they're just a bunch of wanks who are impossible to work with. Guess it's cooler and easier to blame the guys with the money, but hey, without them nothing would ever get made.

That would be a problem if Respawn Entertainment didn't have full control over any IP that they develop.

A repeat situation CAN'T happen because Respawn Entertainment was formed to be an independently run studio with a publishing agreement with EA. That's different from being a wholly-owned subsidiary like Infinity Ward is.

That's a very good point you brought up. That's exactly what Crytek has going on with EA in terms of the business relationships. My only rebuttal to that is the fact that so long as EA provides the resources, EA also controls the deadlines and schedules that Respawn will eventually work by as apart of their business agreement. Is there really such a difference between working with a publisher and being owned by the publisher? There's going to be deadlines, and there's going to be sacrifices to prevent going over-budget: either because you don't want to bankrupt your own company, or you don't want to anger the publisher.

Take Indie-dev Atomic Games for example. They are free to their own creative-freedoms, but when Konami parted-ways due to political ramifications, Atomic's game is kinda in a stand-still ever since. Had Atomic played by Konami's rules: Would Six Days in Fallujah had been released eventually?

However, I do see that Respawn will already have some political power considering they're the former IW Devs, which means that if EA decides not to play ball: other publishers will be happy to take EA's place.

West & Zampella didn't work for EA, I mean not directly. 2015 (the studio they worked for) was an independent studio developing games for various publishers (EA, Activision, Vivendi). It's just that W&Z (and 23 other guys) left 2015 after finishing MoH:AA for EA. So technically, they didn't left EA... But then, I don't know why they left 2015, that would be another story... Also, Infinity Ward was not created as an Activision subsidiary at the beginning. The studio was formed in 2001-02 and it got owned by Activision in 2003.

I'm sure at least 50% of the studio will leave. Maybe close to 100% if West and Zampella have a strong game concept on their hands.

Sadly, they will have to rewrite stuff from scratch, or use a licensed engine (like UE3 or, more likely, Frostbite) in order to make a new game anytime soon.

I'd wager they'll use Frostbite for their first title, while they work on re-creating their new engine for the next-gen of consoles, so their first title will probably not be a graphical landslide of awesome.

Then again, joining forces with DICE may make the future Battlefield and new-CoD-whatever-they-call-it games downright amazing. CoD single player combined with BF multiplayer? First day purchase.

Time would purely depend on how good these guys are at coding might take a couple months at most.

John Carmack only takes a few weeks to make the ID engines, and spends 2-3 hours a day making slight changes to the engine after that.

These days the GPUs and DirectX will have streamlined everything down so that your just hitting the GPU and DirectX.

It's platforms like PS3 that need everything made from scratch which might take a long time depending and what you had to make.

Luckily, the Frostbite engine is pretty awesome. I'd love to see what they could do with the CryEngine 3, but I'd agree that the Frostbite engine would be most likely. It would be odd to see the former Infiniti Ward brass would be using DICE's engine, though. They were rivals until very recently.

@zag: Sorry bud, writing a game engine takes a LOT longer than "a couple months at most". Most game engines are between 500,000 and 1.5M lines of code, according to GamaSutra -- and you know they didn't just sit there typing it out, like it were some transcription job. If your theory was true there would only be a couple game programmers in the industry, and they'd just move from job to job every couple months, writing new engines.

Most serious games studios have dozens of programmers on staff, working full-time for years to make and improve their engines. Carmack has a legion of programmers at iD to make his game engines for him -- he doesn't do most of it all by his lonesome, or some such.

6 down and how many more to go ,if the rumors of the way activision both pays and treats their employees are true. I hope as many iw employees as it is finacialy realistic for them to do so, quit activision and get hired on else where.

I am betting the cod series will be in the death throughs by the 2nd release of the modern warfare ip after iw dissolves. Considering activision only has 2 consistent money makers, wow and the cod series.

Kotick must be very confident that the cod name alone, will continue to to sell by the truck load regardless of who makes it, why else would he kill the goose that lays golden eggs for his company.

I really hope blizzard has a built in escape clause, because it looks like they will get dragged down with activision when it dies.

IWD left EA's Medal of Honor series, a move which pretty much doomed that franchise to form IWD with Activision.

The Call of Duty series will actually continue to be a big seller. Remember, lots of people bought the Treyarch CoD games and didn't know the difference. The series will be on the decline in quality, though.

It used to be EA with all there creed and constant sequal after sequal but they turned things around with cheaper dlc and new ips such as dead space , army of two, dante inferno etc etc , but now its activition with all the creed i hope this teaches them a lesson.

I hope all the assholes who buy these get stuck in lobbies with each other. I skipped new COD games for a long time and a short time with MW2 convinced me to go back to on a hiatus.

With the skill-based matchmaking (engagement-based would be more accurate), I imagine this will make the game even more miserable for most players when the matchmaking has decided it's time for a tough lobby.

I played the OG MW2 recently on the Series X and it's disheartening how much more fun it is. I don't even care about the balance issues anymore. lol

My friends dont play with me anymore i am former pro player and i even streamed on MLG for RX gaming the team i played for... My KD is always high 5-6kd my friends who i went to school with are not good wht so ever so with SBMM kicking in its always putting us in TOP TIER lobbys and they cant hang now they dont even tell me when they getting on LOL

Look at Minecraft. The game hasn’t went anywhere since Microsoft bought them. No 4K, no 120fps, no graphics pack, and no Ray Tracing. Just some new biomes, mobs, and more skins as usual.

Same could be said about Rare. Who knows what will happen to Activision once they’re under Microsoft’s roof. We can all take a good guess though.

TBH they did update it by accident then they pulled the update down on xsx and xss i remeber the XSX version having ray tracing but the S did not. Then after people seen that it was updated it was removed that same day
