Nintendo Is Wrong About Apple

Rick Aristotle Munarriz from Fool writes: My cheers for Nintendo (OTC BB: NTDOY.PK) have recently turned to fears, and I'm not exactly heartened by its U.S. chief's decision to bash Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) as a new force in the gaming universe.

"It doesn't look like their platform is a viable profit platform for game development because so many of the games are free versus paid downloads," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told video game website Kotaku.

Fils-Aime also claims that Apple isn't making a dent in Nintendo's handheld business.

Here's the problem with his metaphorical bravado. Let's say a new restaurant is giving away free appetizers, because advertisers are willing to foot the tab in exchange for sponsored access to freeloading eaters. The grub may not be great, but it fills the gut. By the time a patron is done, why spring to eat a regular meal at the dining establishment next door?

i dont consider apple in the gaming industry yet until they come with a console
not a mp3 player with small gaming ability

turok5882d ago

especially since apple isn't known for gaming. that and nintendo is cheaper and best quality as far as handhelds go.

Anyone who has clearly has never heard of a DS or PSP.

I have to admit I'm been flying a lot lately and i've seen lots of iphones playing games. The problem with the fool guys is these are not games like how nintendo makes them. They are almost curiosities that hook people.

On top of this these guys fail to see nintendo's business model, it involes games made by the platform holder, what does apple make game wise, does their OS even come with any games right now?

This is the same problem sony is suffering from. You need strong games that make people buy the system... period. They also have to be exclusives. Iphones provide throwaway gaming where handles are for serious game play. If iphones ever get tactile feed back then we would have a fight other wise it's two different markets.

I'm sure Iphone can expand their market also the same way nintendo will expand theirs. In an essences there is no war here....

It is similar to consoles verse handhelds.

As much as I hate Reggie Fils-Amie, I kinda have to agree with him! Games on Apple platforms are more or less time wasters like typical cellphone games. Nothing you really want to spend much time getting involved with. I don't see Apple products as a real threat in gaming, unless they can some up with a way to make games that people feel they have to play.

qface645881d ago

all of you guys pretty much summed everything up

i don't consider (insert apple product here)a gaming platform
people will say it is but its really not most of the stuff you can get for the i phone is free ware you can get off the internet

I find it an interesting conundrum; Nintendo and Apple fans very often have the view that neither prospective company can do no wrong. They both argue about the strengths of both companies and when someone speaks about glaring weaknesses of either, both sides of the aisle come out to bash naysayers. It's almost as if neither company can do no wrong.

The iPad is not a gaming device, and very few gamers will buy it. Try to tell that to an Apple fan, and they'll shoot you down. Speak ill about Nintendo and the fans come crawling out of the woodwork to defend Nintendo til the end. Nintendo has a great pedigree. But all of their first party stuff caters only to Nintendo's fans. Everything Mario will sell. Everything Zelda will sell. Everything Nintendo will sell. It's time to come up with something new, Nintendo. You've been milking your core series' for over a decade. Get off the sequel train that's over a decade long and come up with something that doesn't involve Mario or the characters, Zelda, Metroid, and beyond. I LOVED Nintendo in the days of the SNES, but since the N64, I've been left wanting. People will no doubt deride me here, but it's the truth.

one other thing, the 3DS might be nintendos way of cutting into apples consumers as the DS is getting it's own app store.

think apple should just join with nintendo and call them self

Nintendo's Apple LOL

i made a funny ;)

I didn't buy my iTouch just to play games, but I find myself playing games on the iTouch instead of the DS or PSP. Should Nintendo worry? Probably not, because they can sell a bazillion of these things to kids to play Pokemon.

However, if the iTouch comes down to $99 then you'll see more kids playing them because parents will see the cost of entry being lower. Lower priced console, lower priced games.

the ds is far superior that all i will say is there are hundreds of epic ds games and it came out in 2004-2005 with moderate power but even now the ds is getting old it still impresses with new zelda, okami 2 on the way,a new metroid on the way for dsi,i mean yes the dsi is an upgrade but only from a slightly more powerful n64 to near dreamcast but yes with the 3DS aswel nintendo will make others fail soon because the ds/dsi are amazing and can only get cheaper expect ds to sell for £80 and dsi to sell for £110 when the 3DS hits at the end of the year

Pumbli5881d ago

Who told you the DS was about as powerful as the Dreamcast?

Sorry to break it to you but that person was lying.

SpoonyRedMage5881d ago

He said DSi, not DS. I'm not sure about the specifics but the DSi is twice as powerful as the normal DS which I think does put it close to the Dreamcast in power. The normal DS is already more powerful than the N64.

umm, Apple games are for people that own normally their phone or little expensive touch products. Their games aren't in the same genre as Nintendos.

Are you honestly going to give your 7 year old an apple product to keep him silent... HELL NO, after fooling around with that for a bit he'll be back causing whatever trouble.

I like to use this idea when it comes to phone base games vs handheld games,

take 4 of these phones with games and give it to 4 kids in a room, then do the same with a real handheld gaming system. You can make your own conclusion but I've tried this and it's obvious those free time wasters aren't meant for all groups.

Maybe you're on a business trip, on a plane... ok I have a few mins to burn, pulls out the apple product.

I highly doubt apple is using these free games as an indication to see if they should enter the gaming market. They already over price their shyt if they come to the table then we know for a fact they can't go with the same over price ideal as that would kill their system.

4 players to the table... can the gaming market handle it is the question.

The Wii is now a retro console. Let’s get nostalgic about an often maligned system.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg22d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree22d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai22d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
