First year 10 million sold.

Since ONLY 1.6 million. I smell a rat.

30% or higher failure rate... Bunch of losers.

Rushed to be first and cheap. NO HDMI, NO HD-DVD, Mostly PC ports. Bunch of losers!!

AFTER POACHING DMC4 and GTAIV and others NOT much PS2 franchises to POACH beyond 2007.

What will MS do? Create NEW Successful IP? I doubt it! Nothing in the Pipeline beyond 2007.

Sounds like a ONE TRICK PONY.

After HALO and two other quaility titles at best nothing for 2008 and beyond.

Oh wait...in 2008 or 2009 you will GET ANOTHER Xbox to buy. SUCKERS!!!

Ive never looked at it that way. You got me thinking and i guess the 360 is a complete piece of ****... I own 2 and i have been lucky enough to stay with them from 2005. Saying that am always on my ps3 and saturn so my 360's never get played. Maybe after halo 3 MS will get desparate, or just make more halo's. MS are on the edge of a very high cliff, and if they dont do something soon about their bad surport and bad hardware they will slip and fall (something bad?). The more i look at it i laugh, WHERE THE HELL do MS get the right to jump into the so called console war anyway??? anybody??? something to do with MAC?? The xbox 1 was a rushed idea, the xbox 360 was a bad idea... The more people stick up for MS the more they are proving to be cowards. They give the ps3 bull all the time about lack of software.... Them buggers cant talk, 70% of games on the 360 are FPS. Microsoft should give up with the 360 and just make software. And saying that i run vista and thats a piece of **** too. Bad company - Bad software, Bad hardware, Bad surport, User Friendly - NO!. Over priced - YES!... I'm going to tell the truth, the only reason i bought a 360 was to play the driving games it has to offer, (am a driving nerd) their wheel sucks BTW. Yep so i guess the 360 is doomed, unless (you know the rest) oh wait ...pull their DlCK out their arses and make some good hardware. ...and the kids too, unless they got one new and very fresh xbox everyday to play with. With some new game copies to replace the one scratched. If MS try to save money with the console components means NO respect at all for customers and just ask "...give me your money..".

The title allowed makes it look like if it actually did fail.

I congratulate Sony for bringing out PS3 a year later. Many reports show that less than 1% failure rate. Keep up a good work, sony!

You need to tone it down too, cuz you also sound too much like a fanboy. And the impression i got when i read the title was why the Xbox console is breaking down, not that 360 is failing to sell. So take your fanboy goggles off, and you might be able to see that

People cant we stop with the exaggerations? It really takes away from your credibility. I really do believe that the failure rate of the 360 is far higher than 30%, as i've had 2 break down on me already in a yr and half's time (1st one in 80-soemthing days & the 2nd one, in a yr & 3 months), and have seen enough of them break down to know that there is a mayor problem here, and thats not even counting the countless others on my friends list and on the internet and at websites. But at the same time, do we really believe that the PS2 had a failure rate of only 1-2% percent? I mean, come on! PS2 DREs where all over the place. Granted there were way more PS2's around at that time than there are 360s today. But still, come on, lets get real! And the same for 360 owners, less than 30%? seriously? You dont think so cuz why? cuz your machine hasnt broken down (yet!) Come on, people stop all this fanboy bullsh!t and get real, lets be accurate and hold these companies feet to the fire when they fvck up.

See fanboys, you's just dont get it. PS3 (and hence forth Sony) made your 360 better (well, maybe not in terms of manufacturing, in that regard, it actually made it worse!), but without the PS3, the 360 would not be a s good as it is today, thanks to the pressure it felt to beat Sony. And the same thing with the PS3, without the 360, it wouldnt be as good as it is today, trust me, you wouldnt have half the sh!t and features that it does (or are being) added on by these BIOS (firmware) updates. Also, it pushes both Sony and the publishers to work harder, to pull-off a better version of the game they are making in order to compare better with the 360 version. Cuz see, there is a perception out there, that the PS3 is supposed to be better and unfortunately for you PS3 owners, this just isnt true so far. From what I've seen, so far, of both consoles, i can honestly tell you that the 360 is better at texturing, period! also, it is better at anti-aliasing, and tends to sustain better framerates usually than the PS3 version. And i am no 360 fanboy, just ask any of the 360 fanboys on this site. They all think that i am some sort of undercover Sony fanboy, because i dont sweat the 360 like they do or think its nearly as impessive as they do. And whats funny is I've never even owned a Sony system in my life! Not PS1, not PS2, not PSP, or PS3. While i bought both the Xbox and 360 at launch! Yet, they all think i am, cuz i dont praised their beloved 360. But hey, what can you do? I've seen better than the 360, (on the PC) and thats why I am not as impressed by it as they are. And instead am disappointed by some of its graphical shortcomings, like the lack of basic features like; trilinear filtering (yes i know the system can do it, but it just isnt doing it in most of its games,...why?), and also wheres the serious Anisotropic filtering? Ati chips are usually really good at giving you AF without so much of a performance hit, yet, here is the 360, barely using it, again, why? And why all the vertical tearing? (what to keep the framerate up? but you usually dont get "tearing" unless the framerate goes over the refresh rate and vertical sync is off, yet here is the 360 tearing like crazy when most of its games are not doing 60frames, so how are they going over the 60hz? it doesnt make sense, i guess the chip just isnt good at syncing) And why arent more games running at 60fps? All disappointing to me. I blame it on the in-line processing (which is just inferior!) and the 128-bit GPU to CPU bus, (also inferior!) But dont get to excited PS3 fans, as the PS3 has the same exact problems. The lack of all these graphical features is why i am not so impressed by these machines. Sh!t the GC, PS2 And Xbox could do trilinear filtering wonderfully. So why cant these systems? It looks like they are really using brilinear filtering (that's right, "bri" not "bi") which i guess is alot better than them using "bi"linear filtering. But is still unacceptable in my book. Although i do gotta say, that the games coming out are starting to look alot more impressive, but still lack many of the features i have just mentioned.

I've had a "day 1" launch console and have had no problems. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. The thing about it though, is they make the games I want to play.

You got to give to them. Their strategy worked! They were the first to market and they are in the drivers seat of this console war.(360 vs. PS3. I think Nintendo will sell the most.) It's up to them to make the right moves from here on out.

It's all about the games, and in my opinion, at this point in time the 360 has got a lot of good ones coming.

360 won't fail and neither will the PS3. Most of us have a little "fanboy" in us on this site and that's what makes this site so interesting. But 95% of the gamers out there have no clue what is going on behind the scenes and probably really don't care as long as they can play the games they want to play.

All people are going to see is MS has a 3 year warranty and the others don't.

Have fun with what ever system you own and don't let what the others do get you too fired up over nothing.

Asian Xbox 360 manufacturers are blaming poor console design cheap components and a lack of testing coupled with a manic obsession by Microsoft to beat Sony as the reason for the Xbox 360 "Red Ring Of Death" probems.

Two years ago In a desperate quest for supremacy in the gaming console market and in an effort to beat Sony and then later Nintendo with their Wii console, Microsoft committed themselves to getting the Xbox 360 to market some 12 months ahead of the new Sony PS3. They also stripped costs out of the unit in an effort to undercut Sony.

Now they are paying the cost of their failed marketing exercise after the world's largest Software Company announced on Friday that they will take an A$1.3 billion to $1.4 billion charge to extend warranty coverage on repairs and replacements. The company said a months-long investigation into an "unacceptable number of repairs" to Xbox 360 consoles has helped it identify several flaws that caused the system to crash—indicated by three flashing red lights on the front dubbed the "Red Ring of Death" by gamers.

Smarthouse suspected 7 months ago that there was a problem with the Xbox 360 after we got a high level of emails from readers complaining of problems. We wrote a story that appeared online. This in turn triggered a lot more readers to write to us about their problems not only with the Xbox 360 but in dealing with Microsoft.

In Australia Microsoft refused to return calls on the issue and their PR Company even went as far as saying that there was no problem and that SmartHouse was exaggerating. So we decided to contact retailers selling the Xbox 360. They reported massive problems with the console with several claiming that the return rate was over 30%

As an example the Sony PS2 had a return rate of between 1 & 2% The PS 3 which has only been in the market for 6 months is less than 1%.
Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, declined in an interview to say what specifically caused the failures or how high the failure rate has been, but Asian manufacturers of the Xbox 360 who have been pressured by Microsoft to lower costs by as much as 15% say that the problem is caused by poor Microsoft design and the Company buying low cost components in an effort to beat Sony.

Recently Microsoft adopted various strategies to be more cost competitive with its Xbox 360 game consoles, with moves including asking for a price reduction from Taiwan-based component makers and working with Lite-On IT for its add-on HD-DVD drive, according to sources in Taiwan.

One Asian manufacturer that SmartHouse spoke to on Friday said "Microsoft have known of this problem for a long time. They are trying to blame component manufacturers but it was a combination of bad design and them (Microsoft) wanting everything cheap. This is what caused the problem along with them wanting to beat Sony to market. A lot of manufacturers were pushed to deliver components without much testing of the components working together inside the console".

Microsoft has said little about the causes of the hardware woes. It relies on two contract manufacturers to make the Xbox 360—Flextronics International (FLEX) and Celestica (CLS)—both of which make the finished product at plants in southern China. But Bach indicated the issue had nothing to do with the recent spate of tainted or defective Chinese imports.

"You should think of it more as a design question," he says. "We had some design issues, and it's a combination of factors that led to the problems." Microsoft said it worked with the contract manufacturers to identify and address the problem, and has taken steps to make sure future shipments do not suffer similar issues.

Despite adding to the continuing losses for the entertainment and devices division, Microsoft executives pointed to a silver lining: "Most customers are going to look at it and say, 'Great, Microsoft stands behind the product,'" Bach says. "Ultimately, it becomes a positive thought in people's minds."
Stalled Momentum
Microsoft will record the expenses in the quarter that ended June 30, compounding losses at a division that has yet to become profitable. Fallout from the admission won't end there. The hardware problems could undermine Microsoft's credibility with the hard-core gamers it has fought hard to court in recent years. The company belatedly owns up to flaws that reach back to the November, 2005, Xbox 360 launch.

Users complained then that the console scratched game discs and rendered them unusable. It took nearly a full year for Microsoft to admit that the original batch of shipments was failing at an unusually high rate. Last September, the company extended its 90-day warranty to a full year. Then they offered free shipping on returns.

What's more, Microsoft's pronouncement could further slow the momentum the company had built with its year-long lead over Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii. Since January, the Wii has stolen the spotlight—and gamer dollars—from rival systems. Microsoft shipped 10 million units through 2006, but has sold only 1.6 million additional units since then. The company failed to reach its forecast of shipping 12 million units through June.

In June, the Wii outsold the Xbox 360 by a 2-to-1 margin and it outstripped PlayStation 3 sales nearly 4 to 1, according to product tracker NPD Group. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata predicts the company will sell more than 14 million units in its current fiscal year.

Game Releases Planned
Like other makers of consumer electronics, Microsoft is willing to accept losses on gaming consoles in hopes of recouping revenue through game software. And Microsoft plans to release some blockbusters later this year. Along with others in the games industry, it is expected to showcase many of those products at this month's annual E3 games expo held in Los Angeles. Microsoft is betting its core Halo franchise will give it a boost later this year with the release of Halo 3.

The company also has stolen a march on Sony, getting Take-Two Interactive Software (TTWO) to drop its PlayStation exclusivity for the next instalment of its Grand Theft Auto franchise

MS wanted to release the X Box 360 early so they can say ''We are leading the next gen race'' They thought by releasing it cheaper and they knew that SONY's PS3 was going to be more expensive than the 360 So they wanted the extra leverage. It was definately a rush job in numbers of units.

the 360 hasnt failed but a lot of the things said such as pushing the console out early in an effort to beat sony are probably responsible for such high failur rate console design being approved for sale to the consumer. They need to find a way to change the design of the 360 because i really dnt see how they can maintain their lead with that 33%even if they have a 3yr warranty. I want quality products not a product that has a 1 in 3 chance of failin.

they've sold more and have the best selling games and have more potential than nintendo or sony.... plus more exclusives.the wii will deffinatly catch up but for how long? the games are fun for a half hour. not to mention that sony hasnt shown any signs of a pulse this gen.

I disagree that the 360 has the most potential. It's realized most of the potential thus far, but the PS3 and even the Wii have plenty of opportunity to take the market. One of the largest issues with the 360, (besides hardware failure) is it's inability to cater to different audiences.

They've realized most of the potential in their hardcore american adult male market, but nothing else so far. You could even say that the 360 is completely oblivious to gender neutral games besides perhaps Viva Pinata. They haven't taken this issue too seriously. I spoke with some Microsoft reps not more than a month ago, and they were plenty satisfied with the amount of E titles the 360 had, of course they were more or less oblivious to the fact that they were reliant on third party studios to create movie franchise titles, whereas both Nintendo and Sony have capable first party IPs appropriate for younger audiences.

The 360 is a great first person shooter platform. It's essentially designed that way. But that doesn't translate into potential.

The one that carries the most potential is the one with a history and future of international appeal.

edit. I'd also like to mention that unfortunately, the reps haven't even heard of Little Big Planet when I talked with them. Hopefully somewhere in Redmond, an important figure understands what they need to compete with. They need to do something charming like Viva Pinata again, that's more platform style like LBP.

I don't know about this. Even though the 360 has been out for over 18 months, for the first year there were plenty of gamers sitting on the fence to see what the PS3 would deliver. We're still in the realm of early adopters (mostly).

I imagine a majority of 360 owners bought it because they're dedicated to the Xbox hardware, or because they can afford both systems, at least some time in the future. But there's still millions of original Xbox owners waiting to purchase a 360.

But that's not to put down the 360. There's been over 20 million original Xboxs sold, and over 100 million PS2s sold. With around 10~ million 360's sold, and 3-4~ million PS3's sold, you can see how there's plenty of room for success.

This hardware generation is still young. As we look at this Christmas, and even next Christmas, with the influx of games and price drops, you'll start to see a transition from early adopters into the more mainstream audience. It's these next 2 years which will be absolutely critical. I don't think it's fair to even bother to forecast a winner until at least next July.

The 360 is the most sold so far yes. But it is by far outdone when it comes to potential by the ps3.

Better hardware. (not failing and not making noise)

Hard-drive in every console. (Rockstar said this was a problem with GT4 and they had to leave stuff out because of it)

More space for games. (We have already seen games on the PS3 that could not fit on the 360)

More power according to most experts.

MS was the only kid on the block for a whole damn year of course they're going to have exclusives (and deep pockets). @Also Known As, I used to think MS was pretty smart but after the extremely stupid decisions made in regards to the 360's hardware I have my doubts now (1Billion dollars worth of doubts). With all the great games the 360 has if they would've had a 1% failure rate due to them using the best components. MS would have been a force to be recken with. But sadly some of the smartest people at MS made some VERY stupid decisions.

I try to support all three consoles, although at the moment, I'm a Sony supporter, and their upcoming lineup is what attracts me the most. I might get a 360 pending on how Bioshock and Mass Effect turn out. Mass Effect is gonna be one of the biggest titles to reach out to new users unfamiliar with the 360 in my opinion, I don't really care about Halo.

I like the PS3 and the 360. I play the 360 more but I am not going to go out of my way to outright lie and say the PS3 doesn't do this or that.. I'm convinced all this crap is a desperate attempt at a smear campaign before E3 for the Xbox 360. It just shows that the PS3 can't stand up on it's own legs and has to resort to cheap shot after cheap shot from p*ss poor bloggers and journalists.. I dont like the fact that their relying on just Halo 3 to sell their 360... Microsoft have a big chance to x out their 360 this gen due to crappy hardware..They are losing 1.1 billion dollars on repairs..And i see it increasing unless they plan to do a complete revision on the 360s.They were so worry about beating Sony that they didnt care about the quality..They have some xbots fan by the balls..You will be surprise how many of them said "i dont care if mines break down because they have the games"..lol..and they actually go out and purchase another one to have it break down again on them..haha..

Anywho, We all know that Hardware is more than capable of failing on us, especially new Hardware. That is why some of us smarter(poorer) ones wait a while to get our systems while the kinks are ironed out.

However, 33% failure rate NEEDS to be addressed. Yes, yes, I am for Sony as I have said many times before. But Had this been a Sony Issue we would never hear the end of it from Microsoft supporters.

Bottom line. Microsoft, you are in the lead, address this issue and move on. Sony, keep on trucking, do your system tests and make sure this problem doesn't happen to you. Nintendo....... just keep on being Nintendo.

And everyone Gamers, play your damn games and stop taking everything so personal!

M$ did the right thing (finally) and it will pay off in the long run....everyone knew the failure rate was too high and now at least those who really did want a 360 know that they are fixing the problem and "IF" they buy a defective 360 then they will be covered under the new warranty for 3yrs.

IMO...the majority of gamers will still buy the console that has the best exclusives/games they prefer. I don't think this news will really do much to change everyones minds, it certainly hasn't effected the hardcore gamers on this site=99% of us on N4G, I mean reading the comments most N4G members who favor the 360 would still buy a 360 because it has more of the games they enjoy, and most N4G members who favor the PS3 obviously are happy with their PS3 and are glad its pretty reliable. Now of course the extreme fanboys on both sides wouldn't touch the other console no matter what.

Therefore the reality is what will those who have no preference other than that they just love to play games do? Will they think a 3 yr warranty isn't good enough, I doubt it....but at the end of the day I think the question that each consumer/gamer will ask himself prior to purchasing a videogame console is: Which console has the best games for me? Everything esle is media/fanboy speculation, or maybe I'm wrong and 360 sales will plummet based on M$'s latest "surprise" admission of high failure rates. We will see?

First of all my 360 hasn't had any problems.

Amazingly it barley gets hot after hours of play.
I do keep it pretty well ventilated.

No scratching issues.

And yes if it does i can get it replaced for free.

I'm not new to the console issue problem, at least with one console.

In a way yeah they failed. Rushed the 360 a year earlier even with these problems just so they can get a huge start over Sony, as if MS were desperate. But it hasnt failed generally speaking

remember when the jaguar and dreamcast failed. They announced that they would no longer be making there systems anymore. I don't think MS is no where near announcing not making the 360. there still doing very well. I remember the good ole jaguar failing. Me and the other 4 people who bought one were very upset. :(

i hope they dont stop making the 360, they just need to fix the design flaws. Is it too late to do so? I dont know, I dont understand the manufacturing process well enough to speculate what would cost more. However, I will anyway :), I think its a little late to change the manufacturing which is why they went with the extended warranty. However, thats only for the rings of death. My broken dvd drive isnt covered and therefore I wait until it either gets a lot cheaper or they fix the problems with the manufacturing.

I had a 360 until wednesday, then the dvd drive broke on it. Since it was a little over a year old I dont have the warranty anymore. This pisses me off! I am not going to buy another 360 until they fix this pos thats sitting in my livingroom. at least i have a wii and ps3 that still work...

The biggest problem the 360 has right now is...
HALO3,GTA4
w/ a failure rate so high (33%), 360s will be dropping like flies when people are playing Halo3 for Hrs and Hrs for Days and Days, the same w/ GTA4. people REALLY REALLY play these games, especially HALO.
Trust me, their will be a consequence for this failure rate, when people start going hard at HALO3.
and a angry halo fan/fans (because his system broke) isnt gonna want to be waiting for weeks for a new system (when he could be playing halo).
THIS WILL BE A PROBLEM.
THE WORST IS YET TO COME
thats why their giving out 3 year warrantys, they know whats about to happen.

Like it or not, Microsoft is in the videogame race for the long haul. They've had successes and setbacks, like anyone else. The 360 is doing poorly in Japan, because of brand loyalty, and the fact that Microsoft is probably out of touch with Japanese culture. They are gaining ground though, even if it is ever so slowly.

Here in the states, the 360 is a massive success. They are currently # 1, and won't be outsold by the PS3 here anytime soon. With a price cut (probably) and Halo 3 on the horizon, along with many other great exclusives and 3rd party titles, the 360 is hardly a failure. Never underestimate Microsoft.

I don't see how its "failed"(past tense) already, yes I understand because of its hardware issues you can say it has "failed" so far in that 1 area, but just like anything else, its not over, its fixable. The market isn't standing still, I mean for those who say the 360 is a failure how will you justify that statement "IF" gamers continue to buy/support it?....labeling them all crazy just doesn't cut it...."IF" it continues to have decent sales it must mean Gamers like what it has to offer, so if M$ software and service is enough to keep gamers interested while they continue to fix the hardware problem then at least they are doing "something" right and yet if its already "failed" while continuing to outsell the PS3, what does that make the PS3?

BTW, #6.1 Taylor B you are incorrect the 360 library has much more diversity than just shooters and only Viva Pinata, just because its most famous game is a shooter doesn't mean its the only genre it has, actually when compared to the PS3 it's doing pretty good in terms of diversity, thats the old arguement about the xbox being re-used by Sony fans.

More and more Xbox 360 failure, it's becoming popular now a days, and I think Microsoft is loosing more and more customers, why don't they do something? The 3 year warranty helps, but what about the people that have no more warranty after there 1 year has expired, what happens to them? Oh they buy an other one, or get it fixed, but that costs money and time. Imagine your playing GTA4 and your Xbox screws up, You can't play no more, for 3 to 4 weeks, that sucks, when your friends with other consoles like PS3, can play with no worries. I'm not saying PS3 is the best, I hate PS3, all, I'm trying to say, is what more people are starting to get fed up the 360 failures, and will move on to other consoles. Microsoft sale will drop if nothing is done. WE HEED HELP!!! DO SOMETHING!!!

Play the crap out of Resistance until you go nutz? because that's all they are doing now... that and watch blu-ray movies... Microsoft already doing something about it. heck... the new elite comes with the new heat sink solution.. which show microsoft already took the appropiate steps to fix the problem... newly fixed xbox 360 come with the heat sink too. Yes you are right.. it sucks not being without an xbox 3-4 weeks... when you are playing games like Mass Effect and Halo 3... what are the alternatives? Buy a PS3 and watch blu-ray movies? If Halo 3 and Mass effect matter to you that more than the games the PS3 offers... to some of us that's the case... instead throwing your xbox 360 in the garbage and running to the store and spend $600 on a PS3 buy yourself a core($299) and spend the other $300 in games you want to play.
Look at the Sony fanboys... what do they talk about? ROD... do you see them talking about games? nope.. they know that the xbox 360 beats the crap out of the PS3 in terms of games... so they attack the xbox 360 weakness... (ROD)... and don't care about the PS3 weakness(Games). Hell.. I rather be 3 weeks without playing a game than to be with the a console that has no games... which is why instead of buying a PS3.. A product that won't break in the first place is what the people really want. Take Kia and Hyundai, great warranties. But why do they give the warranty? Because the product is going to need it.

Sony fanboys are doing the best they can to try to push microsoft of the market. I will do my part maintain balance in the game industry. I was planing to buy a PS3 as soon as warhawk is released. The last thing I think we need is another Monopoly like Sony had with the PS1 and the PS2. Forget that... this generation has being the most innovative and creative generation for a long time... and sad to say... it has not come from Sony... what have sony brough to the table this gen? Blu-ray... and movies... look at the games Sony fanboys currently have? Only two good games... Motorstorm... resistance.... after that... wait and wait.... if the 360 wouldn't exist what we woudl have being doing for the past almost 2 years? playing PS2?
It's obvious that Sony does not need the help... since as Sony fanboys say... they are already the winner... I will do a sacrify for future games generations.... No more PS3 for me. I will buy an elite instead.. that way... if my xbox 360 breaks.. I have another one while my broken one gets repair... after that I will give one to my brother... and a few friends... hehe. yes I got money like that.

@hotshot1237, talk to me when those dreams and promises materialise... unlike you... Its a given right now...Microsoft had almost 2 years to fix their problems....they should have had the red ring of death fixed last year...Why wait till now? Because they got caught. Somebody should file a class action law suit against Microsoft to get them to totally redesign the Xbox 360 and give everybody a exchange. A 3 year warranty is good and all but you still have to wait for weeks for you exchange and are you going to get a good Xbox 360 in return?

Sony is on the same track with the PS3 as they were with the PS2.

2 years from now, there is no way you are going to want to play a wii in its current form...its just too old tech by then...Hopefully Wii 2 will be out by then...the PS3 will just be getting in the awesome state in the games and firmware.

I feel for microsoft...they could have taken this whole market. They could have even beat nintendo....but now they are going to get beat by nintendo and sony.

but the 3 rings of death happened to 3 of my friends and then I listen to podcasts and they talk about how almost all of the 360s they've had since launch have broke. THese things cost too much money to be breaking. that 3 year warranty is nice but I don't wanna pay 400 plus bucks to wait 2-4 weeks for my console to get fixed. Plus I hate dealing with customer service. So yeah, I had to pass on 360 this gen and I loved my Xbox last time around. Hopefully MS learns from this when they release their next console. Also hope Sony learns not to bundle some technology their trying to sell (blu-ray) in their next console if it means a really high price.

Bluray will have totally replaced DVD...so the PS4 will have bluray and a really big harddrive..and the latest wireless..and probably a dual cell chip with 8 cores each running at 4 ghz...one will handle graphics and one will handle everything else but both can do anything each can do....and they will sale it at $299...but that time the PS3 will be at $149...and would have sold over 80 million units. They will still go with solid reliable hardware...they have learned there lesson on the PS1 and early PS2..you cant sale junk electronic components.

Hopefully there will be a Xbox 720 with good hardware...

It's obvious Microsoft's extended warranty is to stop class action. I still think this might hurt them in the long run.

I can relate something similar from the Hi-Fi world. Kenwood at one stage controlled close to over 50% of the Hi-Fi market in certain areas, back then most of their stuff was made in Japan, was very innovative, reliable and sounded great. For some reason they decided to cut costs and started to make their gear in Malaysia, Philippines etc.

One particular device nearly sent their Hi-Fi division Broke. They were one of the first to release High End 5 Disc DVD Audio Player onto the market, and immediately it started to fail (in fact every unit we sold failed). It took nearly a year for them to admit that there was a problem, by then it was late.

Because of this they became from one of the most trusted and respected Hi-Fi brands in the industry to not even being mentioned any more.

I hope Microsoft is smarter and doesn't follow the same path, but so far it seems like they are repeating history.

From my point of view, xbox360 was the first next gen system I bought. It crapped on me the first week, I sent it back for refund and got every cent back. Now I have wii and ps3, and I don't miss the 360 at all.

And all 360 games are really just FPS... I personally am tired of shooting at ppl and monster day and night. I no longer play Resistance and Call of Duty. Even if Halo 3/Killzone 2 comes out, I am really not that interested.

Besides that...x360 is almost dead in EU and JAPAN.

x360 hasnt even reached 9 m units sold. can you believe that.

Most of the x360 owners are trading in their x360s with either Wii/PS3.

x360 would end up being a bigger disaster than xbox.

History doesn't repeat itself, grats on less then 4million units sold, big bad Sony brining the hurt to M$ and Nintendo! No excuses either, 100million last gen is amazing, for proof that the PS3 is trash is the sales. With 100mil sold you'd think the PS3 would dominate the hell out of this gen. Nope, it is failing so bad because it's trash. No games, no games no games. But it is alright, keep living in your fantasy world where history does repeat itself, guess you're looking forward to the new Nazis too huh? Oh and, Halo 2 isn't the most played. I really find it funny how most of the people on this site who are sticking up for the 360, which is very little support right now,(this site has been taking over by PSfanboys for quite sometime which is why i dont post comments here ever again), are the people with 5 stars or higher, and the Sony fanboys, who cant think straight, and constantly putting down 360 just and only because of its failure rates, all have like 4 stars all the way down to 1 star. Also, when someone puts sony down, it automatically recieves like 8 or 9 disagrees. So where are those people (Sony b!tches), who keep disagreeing with PS3 failures, agreeing with 360 failures, and dont speak up on this site. Chicken Sh!t are we.
But on the story
I dont get if selling almost 12 million consoles, having a great line-up of games coming this year and into 2008, getting dev support from everywhere, not delaying games on the system(unlike some systems i own, who seem to be getting delayed games all the time), and obviously have great 1st and 3rd party games, i dont see how that is a failure. Sure mostly everyone has had a 360 fail on them, personally ive had 2 fail on me, you dont here me b!tching about it like all you Sony ppl. Just give it a rest. I hope all my consoles do, sell well thats goes for 360,PS3, and Wii, but you people, esp. Sony people. need to lighten the hell up on bringing down 360. What has PS3 got going for it, other than a couple good games and Blu-Ray?

Why the xbox went rong. Ok first off theres no question if sony will beat xbox yes they will with games like lair, warhawk, killzone 2, metal gear solid, resident evil, heavenly sword, resitance rise of man, ratchet and clank:tod,socom, gta5, home, jak and daxter 5, Little big planet, and those are only 2007-2008 games! plus xbox isnt counting on the 360 to win the war there coming out with a system in like 4years. Ps3's compitition is the next xbox (or if the wii gets the 360 proccesing power)but even with the xbox everyone will have a ps3 and xbox is out of it unless its amazing. People, including me, are tired of listening about all this SonyFanboy created BS about 360 failing, so we arent having nothing to do with it anymore, so that means the SonyFanboys have no one to call gay and stupid for buying a 360, so basically, this rant is done for the day, and this is the last comment i am posting. Unless this site were to change how people talk about games, then I want nothing to do with any of you or any of this site ever again. if yall are gonna be d!cks for calling me dumb that i have a 360, and 360s are gay and consistently put down 360 for nothing, or for me buying a PS3 and saying what are you stupid for spending that much, and for buying a Wii, what are you 10yrs old. I tried to get back into this site, these past couple months, but it just accured to me, this cannot happen, and we cannot talk about the games and the systems we love to play without being d!cks and calling one another dumb for buying said brand of product. I have been with this site from the old days when it was 2 sites, www.xbox360news.com and www.ps3today.com. then everything changed the day we merged. I just cant take this anymore. I want to talk about the games I like playing, and others like playing without some dumbass Sony, or M$ fanboy with only 1 or 2 stars saying ohh that game is sh!t, it wont sell, your stupid.
So this is my good-byes, Ill still come here for seeing about the latest gaming news, but as far as communicating with you people. Ive had it.

OK fanboys!

The 360 has alot of defective units, I know cause my launch console just went out on me last month... That still doesn't mean every developer and 360 owner will jump ship to the ps3. Since all the fanboys want to talk about failure rates, I got one for you. The ps2 had numbers in the same area. It's just when you called sony to tell them the problem, they told you to use "your own money" to send it to farmington, michigan... and when they find out what was wrong with it, they would send you the bill. Alot of people like me just said "It would probably be cheaper to just buy a new one and call it a day!" Which is what happened.

I personally bought a new ps2 almost every year(I bought 5 in total), And With all the people I know and have talked to they bought an average of 4-5 ps2's. My brother-in-law has bought 7 ps2's. So sony has a high failure rate as well!

I think I got the fanboys pissed now! But here is some more truth for you(to back up my claim). The reason the ps3 isn't selling like hotcakes isn't because of the high price and lack of games, it is the fact that people remember the "Disc Read Error" problem with the ps2 and all the hoops sony wanted you to jump through to get a ps2 fixed, and don't want to pay $600 every year. The ps3 hasn't really been tested because there aren't enough games on the ps3 for gamers to run extended periods of gaming(6-14 hr. periods) like on 360. I'm glad MS finally owned up to the problem though, it shows the customers that they support their product and stand by it 100%. It may take a while to get that bad taste out of past owners mouth, but at least they are trying!

5 Ps2 in 5 years I find that some what hard to believe (unless you treat them poorly) since ive had my PS2 for 5 years now and not a single problem and as we all know the bad PS2s were a launch (and a few moths later) thing

well extending the warranty is not really solving the problem is just making people happy and boosting PR, in my case I am in my second 360 and a little paranoic about leaving it for too long since the RROD is not a funny thing I wont like it to happened again, hopefully this new 360 I have will have the new heatsinck that I hope helps ^^

Alright, alright, we get it now, many 360's have broken since launch. Hell, I've even had one of mine break a year ago. This is a valid arguement, and I agree, there are many complaints of broken 360's cycling the internet, and there are problems with many 360's breaking. BUT there really is no need for every internet reporter and his grandmother to make an article discussing this, seemingly for the sole purpose of increased web traffic.

But seriously people, how many of us actually care about THE SALES OF VIDEO GAME CONSOLES!? Do we SELL the game systems we play for a living!? NO! So why argue over the pathetic fanboy topic of the sales of our preferred systems!? I see this all the time! Why does it matter to US!? It only matters to the console marketing departments!

I wish fanboys would go back to the classic arguement of "THIS game is way better than THAT game." Why? Because there are far more justified reasons to argue over a certain game's quality than a certain console's sales in deciding a game console's superiority.

This will be the legacy that will haunt Microsoft/XBox 360 once it will be brought-up in the future.
Yes, they have done something by giving-out extended warranties but it seems only the newer consoles are going to be affected by this set-up.
Pity for those who have bought theirs' before this has happened.
Good thing though that the XBox 360 has a lot of software titles to please us gamers' and more are still to come.
Seems you really can't have it all.

Yeah,xbox 360 definetely failed...nearly 12 million consoles have been sold by now,the best games are out for xbox360(Forza Motorsport 2,Gears of War,Dead Rising etc),and we are looking forward to games such as Halo 3,Fable 2,Bioshock,Mass Effect,PGR 4,Too Human as EXCLUSIVES.It is obvious that Xbox 360 failed...and regarding hardware problems,which cannot be denied,Microsoft made a Brave move,offering a 3-year warranty,accepting the fact that there is a problem,whereas Sony did not have the guts to do the same when it had to face ps2 hardware issues.So,sony fanboys,give us a break,microsoft knows what to do,and gamers know what to do too,they don't need your 'word of advice'

The article brings intresting points and information, but to say that 360 has failed is too early to say. They are 18 months in the race and alot of issues can be fixed before the problem even increases. Now when they are adding a 3 year warrant, people shouldn't be that worried. By Christmas, the consoles should be fixed.

I cant believe I nearly bought a 360. They were out of stock at release, I never really bothered after that. If the elite had built in WiFi and HD-DVD drive I probebly would have considered it.

Well if MS didn't give the 3 year warrenty i would also say they would fail in the long run. What people are neglecting the fact that they admitted it, no company would let there shame out.I call that being a man, instead of putting it under the rug.All these post about how the ps3 or the x360 are failing or going to fail are about ''information whats out now''.. so its all a premature specelation. Well yes the 360 has some hardware problems, but with the 3 year warranty, who cares? All other playstation hardware has had it's issues before, or did you all forget that? And yes, they are fixing the problem with the 65nm chips coming out this fall (in tandem with H3 release as well) that should let it run quieter and cooler.

It pains me to see such bias. The PSone and PS2 both had issues but both where under 4% failure rate. In no way as devastating as the issues the Xbox360 is having with a 20+ - 30+ % failure rate. I know your probly talkin this way because you already own one. So you feel the patriotic need to blindly defend Microsoft. Even when the facts are therebut that doesn't excuse the fact that it has an EXTREMELY HIGH failure rate. So no matter how you suger coat it, that fact still remains.

You talk about the Warranty well let me ask you this. If you where in my shoes where i dont live in the states and we don't get the luxury of the 3 year warranty that the major continents enjoy. Would you recommend that i purchase an Xbox360 knowin that it has something like a 30% chance of failing?????

Please keep in mind am not in the states and can't just return it. So i'd have to fix it on my own, if it's fixable that way.

So would you recommend it to me?

The 360 is here, and with it's +10 million user base, it's here to stay for many years to come. It will co-exist with the ps3 and the wii, and all will be great.
Frankly, I'm getting really tired off all the crap flying around. I must admit I'm guilty off fanboyism myself, but it's gotten to the point it's just no fun anymore.
Let's just hope E3 feeds everbody's appetite, and afterwards we can all rejoyce with the knowledge that no matter what platform you own, it's gonna be a kick-ass year for gaming.

You show that you can be a fanboy and keep that side of you in check and make a statement that is beneficial for all of gaming. Kudos. I'm more frustrated with MS from experience I had with them (See below). At times I have fallen into letting that frustration out on sites like this when I see others bashing my console(s) of choice. Sometimes it's pointless to even try getting your point across with all the "to the death fanboys" out there.

I'm still on my launch console without any problems, but if mine would've been broken, and I had to go through crappy costumer service, I would have vented my anger to, cause that just sucks. But I still would've loved it , cause it's just great.
So I think it's really too bad you have to miss out on that now. On the other hand the same can be said about me, since I don't own a ps3.
It's just that right now the ps3 has nothing better to offer to me than what 360 is bringing. Mainly because I'm mostly into online shooters. But as soon they show me something I like I won't hesitate long to buy a ps3. If Killzone does look as good as that trailer and the gameplay is tight, I think I just might have to buy one. But I'll have to see that happening first.

A part of the reason i got rid of my 360 was the service I received from MS. Something between Oblivion and GRAW was corrupting my HDD and I would have to format. Over and Over. Tired of losing game saves, I called MS. Their first response was "It must be something your doing". We went over my entire setup, all was fine there. Then it was something I was doing while saving. When I finally convinced them that it was the HDD, they said to send in my old one and they would send another one. How would I save in the time it takes to replace the drive? Oh, you go out and buy a mem card. Ouch, more money to fix my problem? Then I was transfered to a guy I had a hard time understanding and had to ask him to repeat himself frequently. Long story, They sent me a free HDD after weeks of putting up with unacceptable options. Never red ringed, but I have 3 friends who did, one 3 times.
Horrible service, but a free HDD out of it.

Ok, MS used cheap parts and rushed the 360 thing on to the market. I truly think MS learned a valuable lesson from this. "The bigger the headache, the bigger the pill. The bigger the Doctor, the bigger the bill"!!! For the headaches suffered by consumers, now the pill is a 3-year protection plan. And the 1+ billion is the big bill. Fact still remains that the 360 has 10+ million consoles on the market. So you can cry, beoitch, moan, fart or whatever all you want.

My take on how MS can bounce back?!! First, by giving the consumer the 3-year plan was a good start. Reimbursement of monies paid by consumers was good also. Second, software gives life to all consoles. Keep the software coming along at a steady pace and the 360 will be fine. Right now, I have no beef with the PS3. Less than 1% failure rate is good. (Maybe reason why because people have less playtime on them)? Anyway, IMO this is what MS needs to do...

-Learn a valuable lesson from this.
-F*** what everybody thinks and says.
-Don't be cheap about quality parts for the 360.
-Keep your consumer happy.
-Keep the prices reasonable with rivals.
-Focus on the software and you'll be fine.

Despite the fact my launch 360 died on me this year, I have no regrets on buying a 360. Now I have an Elite and getting my launch 360 fixed for free?!! Do you hear me beoitchin?!! No!!

I don't think the vast majority of 360 owners think it has failed.On the contrary,most think it delivers in spades,with great games,great online and now,great support! So who exactly is it, that think its failed? Oh you mean people who don't actually own one. BS!!!!!!!!!!!! whoever wrote this article is a complete idiot. does he really think that everyone miraculoualy forgot about the massive problems the ps2 had with reading discs??? the ps2 dvd drive had tons of problems reading blue-dye dvd's, which was a big problem due to a large number of games using those discs. sony had to go to court in a lawsuit for the shotty ps2..

because there were so many, but there were still a lot of defective units. I mean over a 100 mil units there had to be a few mil defective units out there.

I believe there were a couple of lass action lawsuits(maybe just one) against sony for this.

But anyways even though i had issues with the PS2(and i was one of the unlucky ones), the games justified the purchase, and i am way less paranoid with my 360(it barley gets hot at all surprisingly) than i was with my PS2.

Fortunetly the PS3 is coming out with excellent stuff.

And i don't know about you, but i just want to play games.
And i thank God my 360 seems to be running with out any problems for so long.

And yes i can understand some people trading in their 360 for a PS3 because they are fed up with their console.

Still not a whole lot more but more. 360 is not like his predecessor you made them comments based on a outdated console that is no longer around. Read more about xbox before you criticize it. The 360 is trying the different varieties of games this time around. To say other wise is simply untrue.

xbox 360 has SERIOUS hardware and software problems. I have a PS3 and an xbox 360 but because of the endless problems i have had with 360 - Overheating, crashing, glitchy performance, etc i now decided i will buy all my games on PS3 while getting one or two 360 exclusives.

The 360 has solid software CURRENTLY and COMING out. Live is outstanding, but as this article mentions they just cut too many corners on the hardware. But like the article says, it doesn't mean death for MS, it just means they've lost their momentum. A bad move on their part for the poor hardware design for sure, but after a long wait, they have finally taken the right approach to their mistake and are stepping up with an extended warrenty and more stable future models of the 360.

This is the most misleading posts I've ever seen on this web site. The title has got to go, b/c It's a blatent lie. Why the xbox 360 failed? Excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Xbox 360 the single most succesful and fastest growing next gen console to date? Yes, we all know the Wii is faster, but it's not true next gen. it's a party toy, a thing to amuse an adult or child for a few minutes.

The Xbox 360 is an incredible atestiment to the future of next gen. gaming, and this article try's to destroy that. Dusty, show us all that your actually paying attention and remove this title.

This article reminds me on "Cell is more powerfull" articles some time ago. OK! NOW WE ALL KNOW CELL IS BETTER. Now we have "High failure rate" articles". OK! WE ALL AGREED ON THAT ONE - FAILURE RATE IS WAY TO HIGH! Now we can talk about what matters the most - games - on PS3 and Xbox 360. Where are those exclusive, blockbuster, games for PS3? Oh, right. Almost forgot - they are comming...in about a year! Still waiting for exclusives. As for multiplatform, we all saw in numerous articles that X360 is better for multiplat. Why, in Gods name, would someone buy a console at launch to play 2-3 exclusive and good games, and then wait for 1,5 for something new (I'm talking about exclusives), not to mention price and online capabilities???

Now, I am a PC gamer since the late 80's, and I'm NOT a fanboy of X360 nor PS3 (I'm a SEGA fan since the MASTER SYSTEM ;)), so I'm really not biased towards any platform.

My point is:

TO PS3 and Xbox 360 fans: STOP posting articles which have only one purpose - to make the other competitor look bad! It's stupid and pointless! PLAY GAMES, NOT CONSOLES, so how, the hell, X360 can be "the worst console ever" or "failed console" when it has dozens of great games and they're still comming? No matter how much you love PS3, you can't say that X360 is "crap". It makes you look stupid. And vice versa - no matter how much you love your X360, you can't say that PS3 is "Sh1t console" or something similar. Yes, it's expensive with just a few games, but the games will come. BluRay is winning. The price will fall...

Looks like the Sony fanboys are trying to defeat MS with their bias opinions. Why do you people not understand MS's approach with style of gaming and online play and services are the new trend people will move on with greater incentive than PS2 owners when PS2 had it its issues and Sony's worse relations with the public.

I hope Sony as a company stays focused on their stradigy to get them out of their firm 3rd place postion and do not get side tracked in MS's issues as their fanboys are it will finsish off Sony(no one will be talking about this as a major issue after the tone changes(Games, best warrenty & service will be the only things people care about).

The 360 has almost 4 times the install base of the PS3. The 360 sells about 400k units a month compared to the PS3s 200k.

If the 360 is a failure, what does that make the PS3? It is a far newer console and should be selling like crazy just on that merit alone. And not to mention that there are a lot more Sony fans out there than xbox fans based on last generation sales.

With the 360 outselling the PS3 by a margin of roughly 2 to 1 wordwide every month, not to mention the Wii, how will the PS3 ever catch up? Let me guess, consumers are supposed to wait for something yet again.

The xbox360 is just a horrible machine with tons of games...I am willing to bet they'll end the 360 experiment in a couple of years (which is why they offered the 3 year warranty. Shareholders are already pleading for MS to pull the plug on this unprofitable business they got into...I don't know about you but if the ps3 price drops with the lineup of games coming out i'll be happy to buy one...not cause of the blu-ray format winning either (although thats a plus)...i swear xbox fans get dooped so easily...MS is happy to take your money...i can't wait for a class action on MS...especially those who forked out all that money for games...SUCKERS !!!!

Microsoft is really dumb for doing something like this

1) They lose exclusive title money
2) Their rep gets damaged. WHy not just quietly have better hardware? Say Im an average consumer and am looking for a console. Will I get a console which the company admits they have major hardware problems with roughly 25% failure rate, or a company that boasts a 1% failure rate??
3) They could've sold 10M XBOX 360s at $100 off
4) Sony has ultimate bragging rights

Honestly, 360 is good for hardcore PC gamers making the switch, but asides from that PS3 FTW. Sony's base is EVERYBODY, with games like Singstar, Buzz, Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, Killzone 2, Socom, Warhawk, Lair, Folklore, Heavely Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Sony really has a great 1st party line up for the PS3, and all Microsoft has planned is 1 family game from RARE, which is Banjo Threei. If Sony's PS3 was cheaper(same price as 360), they'd easily be killing 360. It's build quality, exclusives, and untouchable, proven lifespan makes it the console of choice. It's only a matter of time...

Last time I checked:

360 sold between 11 and 12 million units
PS3 sold 3.5 million units

360 now sells 400k a month world wide
PS3 now sells 200k a month world wide

Failure = PS3

My 360 runs fine for 1.5 year now.
About 70 online and offline friends only 3 had a problem with their 360

I only heard two people, TWO exactly that play a PS3 now and then in my surroundings. One got it for free for reviewing stuff and almost is not touching the thing, the other has it at work, that one died in 2 days and really got as hot to be able to use it as a grill.

The one that sounds as a failure to me is the PS3.
Fun thing is, the only thing PS3 fandroids can bring up is a 360 breaking down. There isn't anything else anymore, because they know gaming is on 360 and only BluRay movies on PS3. Their online network sucks, they didn't got GRAW 2 or Blacksite demo's. Sony only updates the PSN once in a while, only with sh!tty stuff.

We know you PS fangirls are eager to try and bash your worst fear. You may keep on posting this stupid stuff, but no one really cares in the end. Because:

If you PS3 breaks down after 2.5 years, you'll have nothing
If my 360 breaks down after 2.5 years, or even after 2 years and 360 days, I'll get it repaired or a new one.

PS3 is the only real failure here. Enjoy Casino Royale and after that put your meat on the Bottleneck 3

You are comparing the 360's shipped/sold numbers to old Sony numbers.

End of June's total-shipped number for the 360 was 11.5/11.6M WW (20-month total), with less than 10 million sold. (By comparison, Sony shipped 5.6M WW by end of March (6 months).)

Do you think MS would miss the chance to scream "10 MILLION SOLD" at the top of their lungs if this had happened already? I don't recall seeing such an announcement.

If they have already surpassed a 10M userbase, I'm sure we'll hear about it at E3, though I wonder why they would wait any longer, considering the recent news climate.

Moore's recent interview stated "More than 10 million [360s] in peoples' hands." -- It's unknown whether he was being deliberately vague and was referring to the 11+M in "everyone's" (retailers+consumers), or if he let the userbase cat out of the bag.

I just don't see how the userbase could be at 10M with only 1.5 additional units with retailers/warehouses. I would have thought that buffer amount would be a lot higher.

Looks like Sony fans wanted a WIN by default. Not gona Happen. The Original XBOX did not get a win by default when the PS2 has it issues and that will not change the pace of this current generation. By the end of this month this will be all gone and after E3 we will be back to talking about all the great games we can go play NOW not later but NOW.

MS stood up told there loyal 360 owners were sorry will repay you and extend your warranty and SONY says just keep waiting the games are coming and this system will last for 10 yrs who is failing who ? Not MS great games great online. I'll take the 360 any day over the PS3 anyway it's all about GAMING!!!! THANK YOU MS

I am really tired of this. I left this site months ago, because I could see where it was going, I came back now and i'm glad I left. This is by far the worst gaming site on the web. The articles aren't posted to be informative, they're posted to attract praise from fellow fanboys, or prove that owners of the other console are morons.

I'm not oblivious to the Hardware falures. I've had two myself. The second time was recent, and when I got it back, it had the new heatsink inside it, and a free moth of xbox live gold. What nobody seems to grasp is that Microsoft are losing money over these failures, so it's in their best interest to find the solution, and clearly they are. Nobody even knows how successful these heatsinks are yet. They could have solved the problem once and for all. Or it could fail again. But you know something, I don't care. It's an entertainemnt device, and I enjoy playing it. I have never paid for a repair, and now I wont have to until Dec 2008. If they asked me to pay, i'd just forget about it.
Having to send my 360 away for free repairs twice is no big deal. I found other things to do for the two weeks it was gone. I like playing my 360, but losing it those two times for two weeks still hasn't justified the £425 cost of the PS3. When I have the money, i'll buy a Wii too, and Nintendo did a good job by outseeling the PS3 and 360, but the Wii just isn't my kind of games console. It looks like a laugh, but at the end of the day i'd only settle down for real gaming on my 360.

This is my opinion, and it is my only opinion.

china and japan are to blame for bad consols. toothpaste, dogfood,fish ect ect are found to be well under standards and dangerous. they keep making things cheaper and shadier day by day to make costs lower for them selfs who make it, not who sell it. dont blame microsoft they are just as pissed about the problems as many of you are. by the way i have had a day 1 xbox360 and have no problems with it.
