Mafia II Hands-On Preview: & 1st Dev-Diary Release

OXCGN:

"Just recently 2k Australia were kind enough to invite us into their offices to get some hands-on time slapping people in the face, 'reading' some Playboy covers, selling cigarettes from the back of a truck and taking care of some greasers in their upcoming long awaited game Mafia II."

I wonder if it'll be better than the Godfather 2?

mrv3215884d ago

From what I can tell it is, again it's for you decide but that's my honest opinion.

Open world games sure have expanded in numbers lately!

So Red Dead Redemption or Mafia 2?

I think RDR.

mrv3215884d ago

We'll see this trend continue, a open world game usually doesn't have to comply with stuff such as

-Graphics
-Cutscnes
-Designed experiences
-Bugs
-One ENVIROMENT

Take Just Cause 2 for example, so long as you have the physics you have a game.

I was a bit iffy about this initially, but after watching all the vids I gathered, and the various items, this doe sound actually quite good. I'd prefer this over GTAIV any day, the visuals look great, and the plot and storyline are more believeable than the GTAIV series.

For me, Red Dead redemption is still right out there in the front by a long way, but a further 3 months down the track after RDR releases, this could well be a game that does further establish the genre in gamers minds.

BUt another game, less open world, but still very story driven and open world style will be L.L. Nior by Aussie crew Team Bondi.

But this one will only appeal to those who like a real adventure, and definitely not to the run-n-gunners out there. But the detail in THAT game, is going to set benchmarks so high, most other games will have difficulty in reaching it.

damn some of those screens look amazing!

Godem5884d ago

was the first one good? I never played the first

XboxOZ3605884d ago

From what I recall, it was a bit mehh, but this looks and seems a great deal better, looks amazing as well, and at least the storyline has some sense about it. come 2011, there will be several more open-world sandbox-style games hitting the shelves . .

However, some of them will be making their way o us via DLC rather than disc, and be of a series nature, whereby we get more story, larger areas to explore, different directions to undertake etc.

Publishers can see the writing on the wall with DLC, and are looking at a model that will benefit them and save them higher retailing supply costs. Getting the news updates, especially since the start of this year, I've noticed a heavy leaning towards bringing many games out on the XboxLive network (and PSN) and a resurgence of many of the older 'established' titles.

Whereas the new IP's and larger games have shrunk, the news outlets are really pushing out the news on such releases far more than the disc-based versions.

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya1200d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled1200d ago (Edited 1200d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney1200d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled1200d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist1199d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin1200d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled1200d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE1200d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi1200d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE1200d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
