Ubisoft's DRM shuts out Australia

Ubisoft's controversial DRM system appears to badly effecting Australia, where many gamers are reporting that they can't get in to play Settlers VII.

Ubisoft admit that this error is "especially common in Australia" but offer no explanation as to why it is occurring.

The only sensible thing for them to do would be to ditch this DRM. Pirates wont pay anyways. Causing problems for legit customers will only hurt sales.

I know i havent purchased any of UBI's recent titles:

AC2
Settlers 7
Splinter cell conviction

Its their loss we got many other games to play, and wont be paying for DRM infested games.

That is bad for Australian gamers but I'm partly happy, maybe Ubi will finally realise they need to stop.

jakethesnake5894d ago

I wish they would stop as they have produced some games that are appealing to me (but that I won't touch), but I have my doubts. If they haven't stopped yet after their DRM being cracked, their servers being attacked, and loads of people complaining about buying expensive coasters, then what will stop them?

And no matter what problems they ever have with their DRM, they already have their response ready: "It's due to pirates". Sometimes it is, but Ubi, this time it is your fault.

How much of this crap has to go on before Ubisoft will shut it down. It was a nice try but this thing causes far more problems than it solves.

Its not just australia is being affected. If you look in the official Settlers 7 forum you will see that almost all countries are affected. This DRM is a joke and should be removed. I am willing to buy Settlers 7 if they change the DRM to something better or if the make this DRM not need a full time internet connection. As long as they are using this DRM I refuse to buy any of their games.

Yep. "Especially common in Australia" but certainly affecting everyone else in the world too.

In short: their system is broken and they won't admit it.

Not a bad article, although the list contains two turn-based strategy games, which are _not_ RTS titles.

Decent list.

Total War: Rome 2 is about to be #1 on that list though.

Axe994687d ago

Aye, tbh list was a bit nostalgia-heavy (which is legitimate, no rules against that) but the later total wars were better put together.

_QQ_4688d ago

Number 1 Should be Starcraft1, Sc2 would be Number 2.

Warcraft 2 was my all time favorite.
I remember many days spent skipping school and playing multilayer on HEAT.net

Anyone remember the legendary Dune II? Such a great game and I wish they would make a new Dune RTS.

Axe994687d ago

Too right, half the games on that list, including the 'crafts', owe most of their gameplay mechanics to the venerable Dune 2. It's a bit of an ommission, actually, given the list is so nostalgia-based.

Command & Conquer Zero Hour is my most favourite strategy games next to warcraft 3. Wish blizzard would make warcraft 4
