New Technology: Full-Scale Digital Distribution Now Possible

Will Powers writes: "Digital distribution has always seemed like a pipedream to me. This is mainly because there are several substantial roadblocks that are hindering it from coming into the market in a full-scale way. However, with this new technology, it will not all be possible!"

This could potentially mean big things for the industry

joemayo765896d ago

with cloud computing have to dl only whats needed instead of the whole game, can really prove to push DD mainstream as the stranglehold ISPs have on bandwidth caps right now is infuriating (VIP package w/ hi-speed and only 60gb a month, really?!?! WTF ROGERS!!)

madpuppy5895d ago

less rights for the consumer.

Who needs Blu-Ray lol.........Microsoft was right all along.

madpuppy5896d ago (Edited 5896d ago )

MS and/or Sony to have you by the nuts even more. I'll buy my games as a tangible good and lend, sell or save it at my leisure.

If the consoles go full DD I will go back to PC gaming 100%.

You would have to be stupid to give up your rights on the games you buy for some perceived convenience.

As for me, I am perfectly happy actually owning a hard copy of a game that I can lend, sell or put on a shelf when I and done with it.

If you disagree, Please give me a reason why you think DD is better.

It's more green! No manufacturing, no wasting gas to go to the store!

Saryk5896d ago

You need to understand the evolution of gaming. They will either do one or two things with DD.

1. Give gamers the ability to trade/sell games.
2. Have the ability to rent games for X amount and for Y playtime.

Eventually Steam, D2D, ETC will have to give the ability to transfer games a person has bought and owns. I can see lawsuits happening when you can’t buy a physical piece of software. And that will happen in the next 10 years.

madpuppy5895d ago

"bill of rights" that allows you to transfer the software to another party to borrow or sell, As well as a way to "back up" the software. for use at a later date.

That is the ONLY WAY that DD might be tolerable.

As for the "green" argument. the only "green" is saves is for the developer and distributer. If I don't have the exact same ownership rights as physical media I DON'T WANT IT!!!

I personnally like to own games.

Digital downloads you never actually own the product, it's merely like renting.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing22d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit22d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing22d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9222d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
