Director of product management at Microsoft, Aaron Greenberg has said that the Xbox 360 will not be getting a web browser, as the experience is a poor one.

Meah, really don't think 360 gamers are missing out on anything here. Maybe the kids who still live at home with their 360 in their bedroom and only access to a family computer, but the average 360 owner would have a PC located nearby anyway...

SpaceSquirrel5892d ago

I dunno. I find it a novelty to be able to watch youtube videos on my HDTV.

Nicholas Cage5892d ago

he cant talk about our games...our browser lol, he has nothing

mjolliffe5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

He says that instead of adding a browser, they're just going to add more and more applications.

Sorry, but if we have an application for every useful site out there, it's going to be pretty annoying, and my 360 is going to get clustered full of stuff.

I would say they should give the option of a web browser at least...

captain-obvious5892d ago

MS: if you don't have it ,bash it

lol

Eddie201015892d ago

I would bet that the real reason they don't want or have a browser on the Xbox 360 is because it would be a security nightmare for them, considering that if they did have a browser it would probably resemble Internet Explorer and the Xbox 360 isn't the most secure as it is.

ReBurn5892d ago

I never use console browsers because I think the experience is poor compared to my laptop. Youtube videos on a 1080p screen tend to be pixelated and awful.

Some like it and more power to you. I don't see any value in it.

thereapersson5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

I'd find myself checking the internet for game tips and other things; heck, I used to browse N4G from the comfort of my own chair. Watching YouTube videos on my big screen was rather cool too, and it definitely provided some entertaining moments when friends would come over. Instead of crowding around my 22" monitor, we just sat in the entertainment room and used my PS3 instead. Granted, the browser on the PS3 isn't the fastest, most functional browser out there, but it is most certainly more than serviceable in most applications. I even used to watch Hulu videos before Hulu decided to be pricks and disable PS3 support.

The second the 360 gets an internet browser, or browser-like experience, the fanboys will act as if it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Aaron Greenberg needs to shut his fat f*cking face for just ONCE in his life. Maybe someone should get him a double cheeseburger to help him accomplish that task...

edit:

Oh yeah, how can I forget being able to view streaming pr0n on teh big screen either? lol...

evrfighter5892d ago

Web browsing definitely blows on a console. Why offer something sub-par when even an old school 1999 pentium III pc could do it better.

just sayin.

qface645892d ago

i could have sworn this article was WAAAY different a while ago

Venatus-Deus5892d ago

Porn + ps3 + 42in screen = win.

Its the only math that counts on this subject.

Syronicus5892d ago

I have not purchased a giude book for a single game. Being able to look up a FAQ or Walkthrough makes it so I don't have to spend the money. Having a browser on the same console I am playing the game tends to make it even easier to look up a game where I have gotten stuck and need a little help. I don't browse the web as I would on my PC but it serves its purpose and in this day and age, not having a browser on your console is just lame.

SWORDF1SH5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

Redtube eu says otherwise. Full screen porn on a 40" tv is awesome.

EDIT: Venatus beat me to it. and he has an extra 2 inchs.... Bast@rd! lol

nevimkdojsem25892d ago

I often used the PS3 browser to check N4G and other sites before and after playing a game. Now I will go to another room, turn on my core 2 quad/nvidia 495gtx PC with 850W power supply unit only to browse a few sites for 10 minutes.... thanks for opening my eyes :-D

5892d ago
Redempteur5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

i can't help but laugh ..

as if all consoles are connected to a TV ..

The ps3 make for a very good remplacement for a pc on the other hand ..
a broswer supporting flash and up to 6 tabs and that allow to broswe internet while listeing to music is not a bad broswer ..IMO.
Especially since sony added copy and paste ...

krisq5892d ago

...until Xbox gets a browser. It'll be awesome then.
Douchebag...

Lifendz5892d ago

Put it in it's proper context. Yeah, it's never going to be the same as browsing on a computer. But browsing on the PS3 allows me to download media like movies and music directly to my PS3 from places other than the PSN store, download wallpapers directly to the PS3, and when my old PC crashed I could at least access my bank account and email on my PS3.

pixelsword5892d ago

Other than having a bigger screen, if you hook up your kb/m, the difference is about the same, minus the occasional PC crash, of course.

Winter47th5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

I'm reading this from my TV and I like it. Don't tell me how I should feel about a feature. The 360 not supporting web browsing is a minus, no matter how hard you try to spin it.

I was updating my Facebook, commenting how retarded you are on Youtube, and twittering "I just finished a game if anybody actually gives a sh!t" a long time on the PS3's browser before you had to update your console just to add these features instead of a browser.

Want a poor experience? having to quit your game on the 360 just to check your twitters with the most god-awful dpad ever known to man.

Don't talk abot a "poor experience" when over 50% of your consoles are defective, having to pay for a p2p service, GamesOnDemand more expensive than retailers, a hard disk more expensive than the console itself, exclusives that aren't even HD & charging for a free content in L4D.

Genesis55892d ago

Old Arron(sour grapes)Greenberg. Why don't have it and can't do it so it's no good.

thewisegamer5892d ago

Only an idiot would say that. it is only an excuse just like them not adding blu-ray . ah because xbox users don't need it

siyrobbo5892d ago

This doesnt make sense to me, NATAL is focusing on its ease of use, and how it will draw none gamers into gaming with its interface, why not use it to draw none internet people to the internet

Take my parents for example, they wouldnt even know how to turn a computer on nevermind surf the net

Either they are too stupid to realise the potential NATAL could have for them, or it doesnt work as well as they say it does and are making up excuses

kwicksandz5892d ago

gotta agree with him on this one. The browser on the ps3 is such a stinker that i think the 360 would be better off saving development time for stuff like increasing the amount of ppl you can have in cross game chat and a clan system.

NO I DONT WANNA RUN THE PLUGIN!

XRider5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

I have a monster PC hooked up to a 42" HDTV and it's a far better experience than any console could ever offer. My other HDMI ports have a 360 and a PS3 so I can switch in between games while leaving my browser going on my PC. The bad thing about browsing the web on a PS3 is alot isn't supported and well it's slow as hell. I can have a game on pause on my 360 and PS3 while surfing the net with my PC and switch back with just one button on my remote. Most PC's made in the last 5yrs even laptops can be hooked up to a HDTV with just a $20 cable.

Pennywise5892d ago

You 360 guys still like this guy? I think it is time for MS to cut him loose. I've been browsing on my TV for 3+ years... I like it.

sikbeta5892d ago

Well, if you have a CRT-TV yes, but with an HDTV it looks Damn Great, I can understand why he said that, he works for M$ and they don't like the idea of something replacing what window$ do, like Browser that is Not IE on a TV that is Not a PC with window$ installed...

Nineball21125892d ago

Again, as others have said.. This is MS's standard operations. They will downplay any feature they don't currently have.

Look, I'll be the first to admit that the PS3 browser isn't the best in the world, but it's functional and it's convenient for me since my PS3 is downstairs and my desktop is upstairs.

Having said that, c'mon ppl. ANY business is going to try and downplay their competitions features and highlight their own features.

You really can't blame Greenburg for doing his job. Although... he does seem to LIKE doing his job a whole lot. Hahaha...

And yeah, if the Xbox 360 had a web browser, the fanbabies would be all about it.

Hellsvacancy5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

I use my browser through my PS3 all the time, i use it 4 lookin at porn, fightin web-sites ill log in-2 Facebook everyonce in a while or check out sum movie/music review sites

I mainly use it when my misses wants 2 use the laptop, if shes on that ill use the PS3 if needed

MS r stupid, its more coz they want u 2 buy Windows 7 and use that as a broweser rather then your 360

And oh, did any-1 tell Greenburg that DVD is the poor-man disk format?

Raf1k15892d ago

I actually think a web browser on a console is a great thing to have as long as you have a good browser and an intuitive interface. If you want to jump on the net for a little while it would be quicker to just turn on the console than to have to turn on the PC.

I think Sony should improve their web browser as it's not all that great and adding support for Move might actually make it pretty easy to browse the web.

Triella5892d ago

it has been really helpful for me yesterday when my computer got infected with a backdoor trojan and I had to surf the web to find a way to get rid of it.

wicko5892d ago

This excuse is bullshit. The only reason MS would prefer to have applications over a general browser is because the developers of these applications pay MS to have their apps on the 360. In the end, it's all about money once again.

Rock Bottom5892d ago

Paying to play online is poor experience...

Viper75892d ago

Its all in the browser. I have surfed the web with my computer attached to TV for about 1 or 2 years now. Its as comfortable as with monitor. Resolution of 1280x768 works and looks pretty good too.

Its also pretty fun to surf the web on a 32" tv. Now if I only had decent speed connection and better PC and I just might stream HD videos from services such as youtube.

Bgibbs5891d ago

Somethings always better than nothing

quadalupeupe5891d ago

Its Microsoft's ultimate version of the internet where they control the content

Inside_out5891d ago

Well...I have all consoles...360 my main gaming platform by far...IT NEEDS A BROWSER...period...if they don't want to do it...FINE...but don't make excuses...just say it's not a priority at this time...M$ deep into the casual side of gaming right now, with Natal and all...I'm sure it will happen ( browser ) eventually....The almighty dollar is always involved in these things....

Christopher5891d ago

The issue with their desire to create a separate app for all things that one could normally do via a Web browser is that they're doing a lot of work that is already done. All of these apps are already streamlined for use with a Web browser, but now Microsoft wants to streamline them for use just with the 360. It's a waste of time when they could implement an IE lite or something browser real easily and get to spending all those other hours they'd otherwise spend on building individual apps for individual Web sites on building completely new and never before seen content.

ThanatosDMC5891d ago

They dont have hdtvs... which is why some people thing Halo ODST was a graphical marvel and are adamant about it. Those people are hopeless.

goflyakite5891d ago (Edited 5891d ago )

Yea, I'd much rather not have the option at all.

Greenberg's so smart.

Immortal3215891d ago (Edited 5891d ago )

He's always commenting about it.

another thing why are you fanboys knocking on something you don't have? that's like ps3fanboy bashing cross game chat.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5891d ago

"right"Greenberg: PS3 Browser 'An Absolute Nightmare', No Future 360 Web Surfing"

So you're saying the ps3 browsers bad and instead of showing sony how It's done you say no browser for 360

nemey5892d ago

Greenberg: no Web browsing on xbox360 A poor Experience ( fixed )

Eamon5892d ago

Even if web browsing on TV is a poor experience, I'd still want it. Or even a youtube application would be fine. Although, I'm not complaining since i have a PS3.

Raf1k15892d ago

Browsing on IE isn't that great plus there's the whole security issue too. IE is usually the prime target for hackers and such. Having millions of 360s running a version of IE could be catastrophic (slight over-exaggeration) for MS.

mastiffchild5892d ago

Greenburg-"but limited access to online apps is the way forwards". Seriously, when will this guy grow a little humility. All PR people can be tools but he's just taking the mick.

Nobody ever said the PS3 or Wii browsers were a replacement for a PC but the option is great and if, like myself, you cannot have you PC hooked up to a TV it's a boon for a lot of things-including the streaming of the porn of your choice.

I don't see ho Facebook and a couple of other apps compare favourably to being able to have some bloody choice either. Stupid, small minded thing to say that insults the brains of any gamer who reads it. Captain obvious could have told you he'd say something like this-MS employees always enjoy rubbishing anything their products lack and it's got to the point where it's just expected and washes over most people, imo, even damning the others with faint praise seems too difficult for Aaron's breed of PR idiocy.

Redempteur5892d ago

well they can't ... they're on a stage where they are adding usb support for their console ..

Meanwhile , the ps3 has keyboard , mouse and usb drive support since day one ...

Greenburg has really shifted to a PS3 and Sony downplay tactic every time he says something now. He wasn't like this before.

I wonder what has him shaken and insecure enough to be like this? Interesting

Eddie201015892d ago

When was he not like this, please remind me of this less douche baggery time.

Greenturd need too stop worry about Sony, and focus on showing some games.Playb3yond

The Wood5892d ago (Edited 5892d ago )

lord what you do have and downplay what you dont.

pr bs brought to you by none other than the honorable greenberg. Even 360 guys see he's a douche.

i mean the fact i can download and watch things for free means nothing to him. Its only a nightmare for him because it'll mean MS couldnt charge people for sh!t or they could make the fees seem more pallatable when they add a a service like facebook theat everybody else is getting for free through a browser. You suck AG. Some of your console owners would actually like a browser

What Would Kratos Do5892d ago

Only if you don't have mouse support.

OrganicMachine5892d ago

actually you can plug in just about any USB mice and keyboard on teh PS3 and have it work.

I did that when my PC's video card died and I didn't know what was the problem at the time and sine I used the same monitor for the PS3, I just plugged my keyboard and mouse on the ps3 and asked a fellow PC gamer who happens to work for Geek Squad to help me out on my PC problem.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle19d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree24d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai24d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
