ATI's next generation plans

Before Nvidia gets GF100 finished

IT LOOKS LIKE the GPU roadmaps are being torn up and plan B's are coming out of the woodwork left and right. The current problem? TSMC's 28nm process, or lack thereof.

Both of them should instead get the devs to make better looking games. No ones gonna need such powerful hardware otherwise, forget current hardware even the hardware like a 4870 or 280gtx is an overkill for todays games.

Imo push the developers for better games or there isnt any need for upgrades or new hardware.

Start working with developers to add in DX11 stuff, similar to what ATI has done with DICE and Codemasters.

I want new a more powerful cards every year personally. But I also don't want sloppy coded games that use way more power than they should with no real visual benefits.

ProjectVulcan5820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

This is actually exceptionally bad news for consumers. Shrinking high end parts is really the only major way to force down the cost of next generation performance- Its probably even worse news for nvidia. There is simply no way they can manufacture and sell GTX480 and 470s or that level of performance at a reasonable price without a die shrink. Ati have more leeway, 5870 is much much smaller. They have room to create and design an even faster GPU at the limits of the same 40nm process. But then if nvidia cant reduce their prices or up their performance, why the hell would ati want to reduce their profit margins voluntarily?

The market will be frozen for what sounds like a entire year until the problems with 28nm are ironed out. It wouldnt be nearly as bad if there was 32nm, it would be enough to cut costs dramatically. Here was me hoping TSMC could deliver 28nm by the end of this year or very early 2011 so i could pick up a new card. Oh. Dear.

@1.0

That would be good for consumers but without new hardware ATI and Nvidia will have nothing to sell and would obviously fade away in a stagnant market. Making new high end cards that draw out the hype machine is what makes most of their profit, even if the prices seem unreasonable to the average gamer some people just have to have it for e-peen alone. And the "high end" always needs more power, and just when you think you dont, they'll always throw a new gimmick at you - and sometimes they'll be pretty good once the wrinkles are ironed out.(Eyefinity,3D,gpu physics)

No more DirectX 9.
make developers push PC hardware

Chris_TC5819d ago

Both 360 and PS3 are DX9, and they are severely limited in the hardware department. Since almost every game is multi-platform and developers are not willing to go the extra mile for PC versions, we will need to wait for PS4 and 720 before games start to look considerably better again.

I mean, just look at games like Bioshock 2 or Assassin's Creed II. They look pretty much identical to the first games. Why? Well, because console hardware doesn't evolve. What do you expect. And this is really annoying for PC gamers because we're held back by out-dated console hardware.

Hotel_Moscow5819d ago

wait what no the ps3 isnt direct x 9

xbox is direct x where it gets its name from direct xbox

tdrules5819d ago

PS3 uses OpenGL, which is more reliable than DirectX, but you will never see it on Windows as a standard.

Bring on the power. My three monitors don't power themselves.

Are there any upcoming games to take advantage of this hardware?

Letros5820d ago

Crysis 2 will probably be the first game that really utilizes DX11 cards in their full glory, I believe it will be out before the next generation of cards. Metro 2033 did well too, give it a bit of time, DX11 is already showing much better uptake than DX10 ever did.

mrv3215820d ago

That's because Windows 7 isn't Vista. You have no idea how bad Vista once was... especially for gamers.

Letros5820d ago

I had Vista day 1, it was fine after SP1, MS just made a bad decision to try to force people to upgrade to an hog of an OS.

mrv3215820d ago

It was fine at launch, just a ram hog... Gamers don't need the feature Vista offered especially considering they for DX10 on XP :P it's just if Vista brought no clear improvement for most PC gamers why bother upgrading. WHile Vista did allow more Ram to be used many did not see the need to upgrade.

Both Nvidia and ATi definitely will push developers to use the newest graphic card so they can sell more high end cards.. Look at Metro 2033, recommending card is GTX 400...

How Mouse: P.I. For Hire Ties a Slapstick Cartoon Mystery to This Year’s Most Surprising Shooter

It’s a little mind-boggling how many elements the developers at Fumi Games are packing into the upcoming Mouse: P.I. For Hire. It’s blending an old school shooter inside a black and white noir thriller, mixed with a chunk of cartoon violence, complimented by a catchy big band soundtrack, and tons of hand-drawn animation in a world dominated by mice and rats. Yeah, it’s a lot.
