Sega: PC sales are stronger than reported

Publishing giant Sega has defended PC gaming, calling it a strong and vital market for the games industry.

Physical retail sales of PC games are continuing to slide in 2010, but Sega's UK MD John Clark says that isn't a fair representation of the market – with digital sales now accounting for a large proportion of revenue.

I am not surprised to read this.

PCGA(PC Gaming Alliance) confirmed 2009 was a very good year for the PC.

Over 70million gaming capable systems were shipped in 2009 (thats about the number of PS3s and xbox's put together).

Software Sales were over 13billion. The platform saw 3% overall software growth.

Retail sales suffered and were down to 550million, however digital more then made up for it. Since digital for the pc is now 80%

Steam confirms a 200% growth last year alone.

I didn't really like the idea of steam at first, but now I can't imagine PC gaming without it.

Dont belive what the media will tell ya, they are under the control of companies who wish to consolise the market then gain complete control.

@rememberthe357

Id take PCGA's word for it. Sega just reaffirms it.

First Valve, Gas Powered Games, Stardock, EA, Square-Enix, and now Sega.

Seems like the bigger players that have just begun to get their feet wet in PC's Digital Distribution are really loving it.

"Coming back to EA, the company decided to focus its efforts on increasing quality, and after seeing that their digital distribution branch [mostly through Steam, EA's own solution is PITA like Games For Windows are] scored a 60% revenue increase. Now, EA's CEO is praising PC as a "gaming platform for the future", while the company's CFO is talking about "The way we look at a lot what's happening in the future is, we've got probably a billion PCs out there in the world. Very rapidly the PC is becoming the largest gaming platform in the world, just not in a packaged-good product." -May 2009

As more publishers (hope to god not Activision) see how much DD is bringing in (I'm guessing as much if not at least 2x as much as consoles) PC exclusives will begin to rollout again.

Of course there are players in the pc hardware arena like Nvidia that don't want to see this happen. As they are only focused on serving multiplats with extra features like physx.

They have been making some very strange decisions as of late so I have a hard time taking them at their word.

I wish Valve would release Steam sales numbers (same with D2D and Impulse) just to give us a clearer picture of how well PC games are actually selling.

I mean, looking directly at retail sales, I'd say PC was definitely in trouble but can't turn a blind eye to digital distribution which is way more popular among PC gamers than retail stores. No shortages, cheaper prices, easy access to a gigantic games library 24/7, permanent association with your account which means no lost or damaged CD's or keycodes.

Don't forget to add, being able to play those games you purchased for generations to come, a very strong suit for PC gaming.

its been 2 years since i bought a game from retail, no point wasting time and gas going to a retail store.

Think a retail store owner disagreed with me :P

Raf1k15910d ago (Edited 5910d ago )

I usually find it cheaper to buy hard copies of games from online stores since Steam tends to charge full price for most new games. For example I just ordered Assassin's Creed 2 from the Gamestation site for £16 ( http://gamestation.co.uk/Ga... ) while Assassin's Creed Director's Cut is still £20 on Steam.

This is why I leave Steam for older games that are on offer.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing36d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit36d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing36d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
