Did Nintendo Doom New Handheld Before Its Release?

Nintendo has made a habit-and millions upon millions of dollars-of tweaking its Nintendo DS handheld gaming system and re-releasing it. The upgrades typically goose consumer demand, and until recently, there was no reason to think the just-launched Nintendo DSi XL would be any different.

But last week, Nintendo's Japanese headquarters threw its American division for a loop, issuing a surprise announcement that the company was working on a 3D handheld gaming system that doesn't require users to wear special glasses. The Nintendo 3DS, as it's called, will go on sale sometime between April 1 and the end of March 2011 (Nintendo's next fiscal year).

The announcement, in short, sent the message to U.S. buyers of the $190 Nintendo DSi XL that they are buying technology that will quickly be outdated.

Nintendo just don't give a f*ck, I like that.

NateNater5820d ago

I think Nintendo knows that no matter what they say people will still buy their products. That's why they are able to confidently release a new version of the DS every single year.

AAACE55820d ago

I always thought it was kind of stupid for them to announce the XL and then before it releases tell people another more improved worthwhile one will release next year.

Not to mention the fact that the XL cost $190... they are nutz!

Enjoi9151115820d ago

they trying to capture the full market.

old ladies will love these things for card games and crosswords etc....

huge screens... so those old people can see what the text reads in games....i held one....they are huge....

phalanx_mark5820d ago

it could be another year, thats one whole year of gaming and on top of that it will take a while for the 3ds to get off the ground. DS launch titles weren't particularly memorable. so you'll get you're money out of the XL i reckon, plus you can use it as a spare for your partner/sibling when u do buy a 3ds.

Meryl5820d ago (Edited 5820d ago )

I am going to laugh if psp2 does the same thing to the 3ds what ps1 did back in the days
What is the famous saying pride becomes before a fall - oh how true that is and Ninty have been all full of it recently.

Huh can you explain your comment?

stridershoge5820d ago

How many times have we seen people predicting doom for nintendo before they release a device and then the device sells like hot cakes on its release.

Like it or loath it 3D is the the big thing nowadays and a 3D plus a DS is surely a win win situation.

Expect another flawless victory for nintendo.

At first I was like, No Code Veronica on the list!? But then I seen Mainline. The list checks out, but I would personally put 2 over 4.

KwietStorm_BLM9d ago

I'll take 2 over 4 also. And even without a number, I don't see how Code Veronica, my other favorite in the franchise, isn't mainline when it's the actual sequel to RE2.

Rebel_Scum9d ago

The original RE was the best. Its not on the list which makes no sense.

The remake of it was alright but should be higher on this list.

-Foxtrot9d ago

The original RE smokes VII and Village, come on.

There are people defending paying 20 bucks individually for 20+ year old games running through emulation. Peak ridiculousness.

Neonridr12d ago

don't want them? Don't get them. Emulate them elsewhere. Were you expecting them to be free?

Inverno12d ago

PS1 classics on PS3 were 5 bucks bro. You've got to be completely brain dead to honestly believe that a 22 year old game being released through emulation is worth 20 bucks. There's absolutely no effort being put into this. Mega-Man Battle Network collection exists, that has online trading, and pvp and includes EVERY BN game with alternative versions.
They could've easily included both Red/Green in a bundle, have online play, online trading, HOME integration which they removed from the description because it won't have HOME integration. Could've added in Emerald and charged 30 bucks, hell they could've charged 40 and thrown in Crystal and the original Yellow in there. So people can play through the OG's and bring the OG Mons into the newer gen. But nah Ninty handed y'all a bag of shite for 20 bucks and y'all happily took it.

Neonridr11d ago

@Inverno - I'm not buying the games for the record. I'm not a huge Pokemon fan.

Profchaos12d ago

I'd rather buy it once and own it than have to pay a monthly subscription to play it on NSO

Vits12d ago

You don’t own them, though. You’re simply buying access to the game. It’s not really that different from NSO.

And absolutely nothing guarantees that this access will be transferable later in life to another, more modern system. Just look at Nintendo’s own Virtual Console.

Profchaos12d ago

@vits yes long term I agree but I don't have to pay to play the game monthly being the main point I was making it's only going to be an issue in 20.years but name a platform that won't have that problem

gold_drake12d ago

20 money for a single gba game is ridiculous

Profchaos12d ago

Yeah I'll be getting it I grew up with red

Relientk7712d ago

I really wish they'd make physical copies for these. I just saw a really cool physical bundle releasing in Japan and I'm jealous.
