Notes on Project Natal, including how much space you'll need

Some advice for any Xbox 360 owners thinking ahead to the launch of Microsoft's Project Natal later this year: You might want to see if you'll need to reconfigure your living room. After all, the motion-sensing control system is no sit-on-the-couch experience. You'll need some space to move your body and swing your arms without banging into the coffee table.
To be precise, you'll want to clear an area extending at least 4 meters (a little more than 13 feet) away from the television. That's the back edge of the space to be taken into account by the Natal sensors. In terms of width and height, the field of vision naturally expands as it moves from the Natal device to that back edge, ending up a little more than 4 meters wide and 2.7 meters high (about 8 feet, 10 inches).

but I guess you won't need that much space if the game only need the top part of your body.

no catching big red balls for me! My room isn't big enough!

Pennywise5900d ago (Edited 5900d ago )

13 feet? Do you guys that plan on getting Natal have 13 feet to clear for it? I am not knocking it, just curious.

My setup is not big enough either. I would have to turn my living room sideways, but that wouldn't be good for my house.

callahan095900d ago (Edited 5900d ago )

I am not moving my couch out of the way to play a video game, and I don't even really have anywhere that I could move my coffee table except put it right up against the couch. If I move the coffee table like that, then I have about 8 feet between my TV and the coffee table. If I don't want to move it, then it's about 6 feet. How far away from the TV do you HAVE to be in order for it have a field of view tall enough to accommodate a six foot tall guy like me? Is 6 feet enough? Even if it is, I'm standing there right now, and it's just entirely too close to the TV, I don't feel comfortable standing here and looking at the screen, much less flailing about. Looks like Natal isn't going to work for me except in situations where I can be sitting on my couch to play, but I'm not sure what kind of interesting applications there will be for that situation.

13 ft.

these people are only a few feet away.....

guess that proves one thing

Bigpappy5899d ago

He seems to be filling in some blanks with out knowing consulting some one with the true specs. I know he said he was at the conference. He just doesn't seem to have a clear understanding of the specs.

FamilyGuy5899d ago

That's a little much, I actually do have enough space after pushing the couch to the side though i think the 10 foot distance with the couch there should suffice.

young juice
EVERYTHING about that video is fake, most of us have known this for a while.

M$ advertising is making me chuckle lately, the PS3 version 360 ads for ff13, no "not actual gameplay" being shown in most of their ads, the attempt to trick gamers into thinking their product is actually on par with what the PS3 does/can do.

Make no mistake, I do think they have a few good looking games (multi-plats mostly) but come on.

insomnium5899d ago

I've seen that video and boy is it stupid. I tried to watch it again but I felt too embarrassed and awkward so I stopped. The pit stop did it for me. The man changing tyres was way too much.

SeNiLe9115899d ago (Edited 5899d ago )

but will have to move the couch a bit if I want to get crazy.

I do need a new couch though. Maybe someone will come out with a gaming couch that is comfortable to game on and when you want to move it out of the way to game with Natal it moves easily.

@Below

Actually, my couch is all jacked up where I sit directly in front of the TV gaming for hours. If I played mostly Natal then whatever couch I buy would last longer.

And I can careless if I look like a fool if i'm having fun.

BattleAxe5899d ago (Edited 5899d ago )

Well if you're planning on looking like a fool with this NATAL, 13 ft should be enough so you can flail your arms and legs so you can hit those balls flying at you.

@Above,

Don't worry about getting a new couch, its gonna get trashed if you get Project Natal. Be Safe!

@Pennywise

I agree, I would have to rip apart my livingroom too...not good indeed.

kneon5899d ago

Well if true then Natal is definitely a no go for me, I'd have to rearrange the whole room and that configuration would be just stupid.

Plus if they really expect 4 meters of clear space that is going to really cut into sales if they come clean and tell people up front about the space requirements. I know few people that have their TV set up that far from the furniture. 4 meters is about the maximum recommended viewing distance for a 55 inch TV so the vast majority of people are likely sitting much closer.

siyrobbo5899d ago

my rooms only 3 metres on its longest side,

i was going to get natal day 1, now i may have to rethink my plans

sikbeta5899d ago

@young juice

watch at 1:14 to 1:30 and at 2:50 to 3:10 Rampage and BUZZ!™ come to my mind, also people with no big space can't even think about natal, People in Japan will don't like natal at all, they really don't have Enough Space:

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

JokesOnYou5899d ago (Edited 5899d ago )

Of course it depends on the type of game being played, even the Riccochet videos with dev's, media playing on Live TV have the players standing closer than 13ft, so thats probably just the maximum recommend space with 2 players playing in one area of course you want to make sure there is enough space, when I see folks play the wii I don't see them playing in a cramped space with a coffee table and a couch sitting close to the TV. So why would you think a hands free full body game NOT require a decent amount of space, but either way not all games will be Riccochet type games, and most of us on n4g aren't particularly interested in those types of games/casual stuff that Natal will have anyway. The games that I will likely be interested are the ones that will just utilize gestures, head tracking, voice recognition etc in conjunction with a standard controller which won't require anymore space than normal to play, but yes I imagine a full hands free games like say a tennis game will definitely require you to have the ample space which makes sense to me.

lol at the "OMG I don't have enough space to play Natal" comments from sony folks, who for the most part have said a 1000x's they're not interested in Natal, yet here they are=

JeffGUNZ5899d ago

It say 13 feet being to edgezone, meaning it won't pick you up accurately from 14 feet and beyond. You will be fine from any set up as long as it is not 14 feet and further.

ll_UNDERSCORE_ll5899d ago

Wow natal seems like its a instant fail

13 feet!!!! Then the bots are gonna have a real problem since they game in their momma's basement measuring 10x10.

Seriously 13 feet LMFAO. First M$ brings a HDMI less 360 at the start saying SDTVs rule and now they say Natal needs 13 feet to work LMAO. What was M$ thinking before? That people view SDTVs by keeping them 13 feet aways lol.. No wonder Bots are the stupidest creatures that fall for anything M$ says.

On seconds thougs, 13 feet might be required so you don't slap your opponent in reality. NATAL=FAIL.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5900d ago

Is that really all you could come up with? Make sure you wash the goo off your dildo after use. Don't want your dildo wand to look like a glazed doughnut after you're done.

cyborg69715899d ago

Is that all you can come up with J. Really I didn't expect much from any of you bots being your all just getting ready to graduate from the first grade.

DlocDaBudSmoka5899d ago

looks like u still have dildos on your mind.

rawd5899d ago

ahaha first one to answer that one was Jason

avengers19785899d ago

Let's not talk about the games, the live support if any, or a pricepoint, Let's talk about how much space you'll need in your living room.

AngryTypingGuy5899d ago

I thought they said 13 feet was the back edge of the space. You'll probably be fine if you have a room a little bit smaller than that.

What I really am excited about is the fact that they said "However, one of the details that emerged from the session is that controllers and accessories can be used in conjunction with moving around to add even more elements of control to games"...hello hardcore gaming!

What Would Kratos Do5900d ago

Not good news for 360 gamers in the UK.
Modern UK houses are tiny.

Sheikh Yerbouti5899d ago

but that not much hope of Natal succeeding there anyway.

JeffGUNZ5899d ago

It is saying 13 feet is the FUTHERST it will pick you up. That is the edgezone. Terrible wording in the article, but if you read it a second time you will pick up on it.

What about that PATHETIC Dildo (MOVE) i'm sure u need just as same space to play games unless u standing 1 inch close to the TV. F*cking pathetic sites trying in vain to bring down NATAL.

NATAL is the Next Big Thing to happen since Internet it's the FUTURE anyone who doesn't jump aboard can stay in the past and be laughed at.

JustTheFactsMr5900d ago

I guess you missed the Socom 4 segment for Move. Sitting on the couch using small precise movements.

The only dude who's pathetic here is you.

Xplayer20315899d ago

You and jason 360 should blacklisted as being the worse delusional fanboys on this site. The amount of dribble that comes out yals mouths succeed anything I've seen/witness in my pass time.

Good day, sirs.

I somehow only have 2 bubbles more than a useless bot like you

"NATAL is the Next Big Thing to happen since Internet"

Dumbest comment of the year.

Im book marking this, can't wait till Natal comes out and is bigger then the internet!

Also the 8 year old MGS Rising seems to be getting more and more annoyed, and actually sounding more and more like an 8 year old.

Whats next "LEAVE RISING ALONNEEEEEE"

Naaa with move you can sit on your couch, you should really watch videos.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
