thats the biggest failure this generation, i went to frys and seen an hddvd for 4 dollars last year...sad

hddvd was a complete failure to say the least,to prove my point there now releasing bluray movies (new) for $20.00. I THINK MICROSOFT SHOULD HAVE FOCUSED ON A BIGGER FORMAT, then they wouldent have to deal with bieng owned by sony's bluray. and about sixaxis, it sucks that it didnt have dualshock.

MS's add-ons are not innovations. They're crappy 'nickel&dime' strategies and I hope they failed hard enough to let MS know they cannot do it that way next time.

As for HOME, it's not a failure. I don't use it but others do.

Take off the Wiimote because I doubt outselling your competitors combined for an entire generation and now springing up copy cats is a failure. Maybe a tech failure due to the lack of 1:1 but a console innovation failure? Hell no.

Home is also debatable.

I would of definitely added HD-DVD and skipped the whole peripheral rant.

Might want to add the PS3Eye to that as well because so far this gen that thing is total fail. Of course when Move launches it will have a renewed purpose but that thing has done nothing for me so far. EyePet obviously hasn't delivered and they haven't even released it outside of Europe and the PSN games are a joke for it.

Can the Xbox 360 just be one. Why didnt you list it?

Flower,flow and warhawk were great games with sixaxis support. Well just a year and Natal will have secured the top spot of failed innovations.

Even if only half the 12 million of the supposed current user base really use it, that still doesn't put it in league of an MMO like WoW.

Also never hear its numbers compared to the thing it rips-off, 2nd life. Not that I even know those numbers.

That being Nintendo's vitality sensor, you know that thing will only be used in a few first party applications/games then just ultimately forgotten by everyone else, which reminds me.

Wii speak should have made the list as number one, I bet most Nintendo consumers don't even know that things exist including those who purchased Animal Crossing.

I have to say, the Sixaxis / Dualshock 3 cramps my hand. It was made most obvious to me when after finishing Ninja Gaiden 2 on my 360, I picked up Sigma 2 on PS3 and found the speed of the button mashing hurt my hands (and fingers).

I know it's an iconic shape and all, but Sony could do with going for an ergonomic design like the 360 pad. Sony's d-pad and built-in rechargable battery + 360 shape, thumbstick positions and triggers = ultimate controller.

I still also have a 360 vision cam somewhere in my pile of unused cables, headsets, and wiimote jackets. I think I used it about twice.

Hands down the Number One Fail of this generation was the HD player for the Xbox. Not only did it fail, it was forced out completely. It got facepalms much like I did since I bought one of those now worthless piles of crap. Big Fail!

HOME and the Wiimote are on this list just to cause controversy.

The Wiimote has helped the Wii outsell all other consoles this GEN and continues to help the Wii keep selling.

HOME is new and exciting every day new things are happening there, yes it hasn't live up to all the promises made for it, but then again they haven't said this is all we are doing so thats the end of the evolution of HOME. So once again someone tries to belittle a free service, that is bring in Tons of cash for the company, is helping PS3 gamers socialize, and being judged on a few months of a life time is just to get people on the website and get hits.

The Xbox vision camera was trash, I paid 40 bucks for it and I used it like 3 times. Then it vanished and I haven't seen it in years.

Sixaxis also sucks but I'm stuck with it for now because I bought the 40GB bundle.

I don' think Home should be considered a failure. It has grown leaps and bounds compared to over a year ago. I was blown away by the Loco Roco Island Space I visited after revisiting Home for the first time in a while.

PlayStation Home can definitely surprise you if you are away long enough. ^_^

at this point, i barely noticed it when it was there, and not having it didn't hurt my enjoyment of the games that didn't have rumble like Uncharted, Folklore, and R&C Future: TOD.

with that said, i ended up getting 2 Dual Shock 3's but for a more important reason: the SixAxis controller would CONSTANTLY lose sync with my PS3. it drove me and wife crazy.

my roommate at the time had got the Dual Shock 3, and after playing on his system, the weight and lack of losing sync every few minutes made me trade in my SixAxis', and get Dual Shock 3's for me and my wife.

so far, we haven't lost sync with our console AT ALL.

Rumble is a nice feature, and when used smartly it's VERY effective (ie, Heavy Rain, Silent Hill 1-4, MGS4, etc), but it's not a deal breaking feature. i guess because i've been using rumble for so long with my consoles, it's a secondary stimuli that my brain doesn't think much of anymore. even when it's turned off or missing (some games i've actually turned rumble OFF because it was so distracting), i don't notice.

And the PS3 controller is great in my opinion, not the SixAxis but the DuelShock 3 is tight.
And the controllers are only like, 40 dollars. And recharge unlike the 360 controller....

i dont know about you guys but i love my dualshock and sixaxis. I looks classy and simple. Noo need to have buttons all over the controller. And it fits perfectly in my hands. The 360 controller makes me curl my fingers on the back side, especially if i want to use a trigger.

The only part that i would want to be improved are the trigger buttons R2/L2 .

Home was dismal at first, but has become a money making machine. You would think people wont spend money to dress there avatars or buy new spaces, but boy are you wrong. XD

so much hate for SONY. My top failed inovations have to be in no particular order

eyetoy (up to now, not much support once again)
360 accessories
wii third party peripherals
AND the logitech ps3 controller. Sure its 20-30$ but boy does it suck, no bluetooth, the controller feels clunky and it uses one of ur usb ports.

every PS3 game that uses sixaxis controls usually makes me rage.

they aren't talking about sony, because sony hasn't innovated anything, they just like copying nintendo :)

Sure they've added a couple of MS products to make it seem unbiased...

I may give you the sixaxis, but whenever it's used now it is actually innovative (throw-distance of a grenade in uncharted, steadying the sniper in killzone 2)

it makes me laugh to see some of you homos sticking up for HOME just because you blindly support one console. I spent a half hour setting up Home when it first came out, and I spent 10 minutes playing all while realizing HOME was worthless.

2nd life is bad enough, but Sony is just trying to copy it.

Other than that, I would take the Wiimote off and put the HDDVD player on the list. That and HOME are easily the biggest failures of this gen.

5. Xbox Camera

Who the hell has one of these? (And why would you want one? Think Chat Roulette...)

4. WiiMote

The Wii is by far the biggest gimmick in gaming I have ever seen. It is also the most successful (obviously). Everyone saw the commercials of the Jap guys coming to the families home and playing games and everyone jumping around. And that is what sold it. Though after the first few times you play, you figure out you can play Wii Tennis ( and all the games really) by just sitting there and flicking your wrist. Bye bye possibility of weightloss, hello same ol' game experience except this time your holding a brick in your hand.

3. PS3 Controller

This controller has NEVER felt right in my hand, is very uncomfortable and I would not by a PS3 just because of this controller. Fix it and I will.

2. Xbox Addons

Although I will not buy Xbox addons because of their price, I would have to say they are in fact a win (for M$, not for me or anyone else really) because they allowed M$ to price their system so cheaply, thus definitely winning until the PS3 came out. Now we will see how the rest of the generation plays out.

Xbox's next move should be to release a system with everything built in, and for cheap.

Home was a console innovation? I liked how they were going in the direction of hardware and accessories then they go to software. I dubbed this article as flamebait!

I happen to like the camera. It's simple and I like seeing my friends while I play. as for the ps controller, it's a lot less comfortable then the 360's. Wii is a joke...And as for the xbox add ons, I just buy them used or online.

Very few people seem to realise how much of a success Home actually is, anything that provides a company with a PROFIT can't possibly be a failure.

I think back in last March when Home had an update I went too download it and my PS3 froze and it corrupted my hard drive. Needless to say my PS3 hasn't been the same since because I bought a new HDD and it now says that its corrupted then it died on me Friday.

i dont think the Wiimote would be considered a failure, look at what it did with FPS controls Metroid Prime 3, and play RE4 with it, you'll laugh at the sight of dual analog sticks
if the wii mote was a failure i dont think we would see Natal and the PS:Move

I love my ps3 and I play the crap out of it (probably about 2-3 hours a day everyday), but I think Home blows.

You don't have to defend everything Sony does. Home is booorrring and I really don't see the appeal of it at all, or why people feel the need to have to defend it like it's God's gift to man.

Has the ps3 brought anything innovative? All they been doing is copying successful features from others. Trophies = Achievements, HOME = Sims, MOVE = Wii controllers. The only ones that are really being innovative is Microsoft this gen.

I personally dont really agree with some of his definitions of failure. The wiimote has done fairly well, given it could have and should have innovated more (as he states) but its certainly not a failure. ANd home still has tonnes of people in it, literally tonnes. They just need to add more chat channels and keyboard and mouse support. Homes got lots of fun free stuff, how can that be a failure lol.

TBH the only fail thing I seen was Number 5.
