Valve Be Trippin'

Videolamer writes:

"I think of Valve as both the most interesting and depressing developer we have. Interesting because they are a shining example of what can happen when you give time, money, and freedom to developers. Depressing because they are an increasingly obvious outlier. If armchair analysis of the industry were a fighting game, Valve would be the character banned from tournament play.It just wouldn't be fair."

And people wonder why Valve has such a large, devout fanbase. It's stuff like this, which may not seem like much, but to a community of gamers, is better than a billion dollar ad campaign.

Cryptic updates, and puzzles that their whole community has to rally around to try to solve; further proof of Valve's genious.

In all reality, what other company besides Valve would change the ending to their game to announce the sequel?

ReservoirDog3165918d ago

Well, that and some of the best (and most revolutionary) storytelling in videogames and any medium to be honest. Neither books nor movies do storytelling like valve does: 100% immersed.

lelo2play5918d ago

Only stupid fan boys don't appreciate Valve games. Half Life, Half Life 2 + episodes, Portal, Left4dead, TF2, are enough to prove with out doubt that they are one of the best developers out there.

Millah5918d ago (Edited 5918d ago )

If only more developers could be like Valve, the industry would be a lot more healthy instead of having scum like Activision running the show. All developers should have the level of control and freedom that Valve has. Thats what makes Valve so great. They make fantastic games, and they do it the way they want to, and have a long reputation for being loyal to their fanbase.

I mean theres a reason their games have remained relevant for a decade. Counter strike is just as alive today as it was almost ten years ago, if not even more so today.

Godmars2905918d ago

Yeah, because they either have to buy a game console they don't want for whatever other reason or play it in a way that they're not familiar or comfortable with.

God I wish people would think before they wrote crap.

mastiffchild5918d ago

Yep. Valve, on PC, are just about as good as it gets and apart from my worries over how addictive the money they make from their(shoddy, in fairness)360 ports might become and how that may effect how much longer we have to wait for HL2Ep3 or other new genius for the PC from Gabe and Co.

I also love the stuff , like this, that they get up to. It's full of thought, invention and playfulness-all of which comes right through in their games and gives them a force of personality few other developers can rival. This stuff certainly beats out Capcom making announcements about announcements and bloody clock countdowns in any case!

This generations collisions with the console world, however, just feel unnecessary to me:They didn't need to enter an ugly slanging match with the PS3 and it's gamers and , imo, should either improve the quality of their 360 ports(eve if just to include all the content, run a bit smoother and allow L4D and Co on 360 to have mods imported(when it's such a vast part of the game experience on PC it feels wrong for 360 only gamers to have to pay so much more for so much less)or, and it's what I really wish they would do, just concentrate on the PC and, maybe, find someone they could really trust to do their console work for them. As it is it feels like we're waiting longer for things primarily because of them having to do both and the quality of the 360 output isn't as good a legacy as I'd want if I were in their shoes when their PC games are still among the very best.

Maybe I just still feel stung by what I paid for L4D on 360 just to play with a few non PC gaming mates and I'm probably, also, being too romantic in wanting them to be JUST about the PC again but I don't like to see them being dragged down by the stuff surrounding the consoles as it makes no one look very good and Valve, and their great games, deserve a lot better than that. Of course, it could just be that they don't understand the console world as well as others after so long concentrating on PC(and with Steam as well as their games they've been such visionaries elsewhere I suppose it might be frustrating for them on the consoles by and large)which would be perfectly understandable.

Funnily enough, though, I'm the ONE who didn't love Portal that much-don't worry, I've already been told that that makes me sick in the head! but, anyway, Valve continue to do great things on, and for, their fans and long may it continue-just get on with things a bit quicker you buggers! Great developer, simply great.

BTW-did anyone else read that article (in GR of all places)where they went to look at L4D2 and saw something else(you were meant to think it was HL2 MP IIRC!)that really blew them away? Must be six months ago now and I've not seen anything since and it sounded like the hacks were really amazed-even for a day at Valve amazed as it were. I'm starting to think I dreamed the whole damn thing as I can't think of anything else about it since-anywhere.HL2Ep3 with a new engine and MP though? Amazing possibilities.Christ, I can't even think whether the interview was with Falisek or who it was with! I'll have to go and check it when I've got time to see if I really am losing it and starting to create game scenarios for my own internal hype train of the non existant.

Why are people acting like "Valve" made this game themselves?

They make good games like HL1 and HL2 everything else is a mod and often not made by valve them self, they buy out people who come up with these ideas, ex. Counter Strike and Portal.

Lets not all bend over for gabe JUST yet.

Letros5918d ago (Edited 5918d ago )

Not officially(though portal isn't a FPS...), although they recently hired IceFrog from DotA. So they must be up to something....

Tony P5918d ago

"Why are people acting like "Valve" made this game themselves?"

Because this is Valve supporting the industry and gaming community. Are we supposed to downplay Valve because they actually *support* community development instead of serving up the cease and desist?

Portal might not exist were it not for Valve. Maybe the concept didn't originate within the company, but it was Valve that recognized and hired those talented guys and turned their cool little student project into a hit game.

What would Portal be without Valve? A forgotten student project instead of a hot new property. Give credit.

Godmars2905918d ago

Nothing of what you say changes the fact that Valve was only indirectly responsible for Portal. That's its only a Halflife 2 mod.

That while people are applauding them for announcing Portal 2, we've yet to see anything on HL2 episode 3.

Tony P5918d ago

Portal is not a "mod" of HL2.

Anyway, counter to the other guy's point who you've taken to defending, the game wasn't created in some student lab and brought whole to Valve to be published. This was the game: https://www.digipen.edu/fil...

So to imply Valve just wrote a check for it is inaccurate and unfair to the work Valve actually put into making Portal.

evrfighter5918d ago (Edited 5918d ago )

"Nothing of what you say changes the fact that Valve was only indirectly responsible for Portal. That's its only a Halflife 2 mod."

LoL

The best fps shooters the past decade across ALL platforms were either a half life mod or based on the source engine. Arkham Asylum, Borderlands and Gears were based on the unreal engine so they must be Unreal mods amirite?

cs 1.6
DoD 1.6
TF
cs source
TF2

the closest anything has gotten to any of those was cod but that's like comparing a water pistol to a genuine missile launcher. CS destroys CoD in every aspect.

I'm not sure if you were trying to paint half life and it's engines in a negative light. But if you were, I'm sure you just got a lawl out of every pc gamer that read your comment.

Godmars2905918d ago

So this never happened:
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

And I still hold that they have two separate titles based on the HL2 engine, and have yet to even give any indication of showing the third part of a promised squeal.

Tony P5918d ago

I have no idea why you think that's proof of anything other than the natural compatibility of two games running on the same engine. Of course you can mod two Source games together.

I'll just go ahead and post this again: https://www.digipen.edu/fil...

The concept went from that to the game Portal as we know it. It was never a mod. If you have further questions, please direct them toward Google.

FragGen5917d ago

I (heart) TF2 but personally, for my tastes, Valve's a seriously overrated studio. To be honest, I think the most important and groundbreaking thing they've done is Steam.

Valve rocks.

Tf2 is still one of my favorite shooters, even with BC2 out. L4d2 still gets its share of playtime.

With the modding community and the quality of Valve games it just never gets old.

Edit: come to think of it leaving asides Nintendo who do their own thing. Valve and Blizzard are the most profitable developers in the gaming industry. Nothing can touch PC gaming with those 2 around.

ballsofsteel5918d ago

no offense but i'd prefer at least an announcement about HL2 episode 3 rather than portal 2. 10 bucks says left 4 dead 2 is released before episode 3

XsteveJ5918d ago

Well...yea, duh. Left 4 Dead 2 is already out silly.

10 bucks please.
