Interview: Metroid: Other M -- Humanizing Samus Aran

Bitmob interviews Nintendo's Nate Bihldorff about the surprisingly chatty version of Samus in Other M, the game's backstory, and the Samus-in-a-bikini potential (Team Ninja's involved, after all).

rod_furlong5922d ago

Seriously? How many other Metroid interviews have you read lately?

"Without giving anything away, you're not going to see beach volleyball in the middle of this Metroid game. I don't that'd be a surprise to anyone. But nothing that we've seen has raised any alarm bells for us. We trust that Team Ninja and Mr. Sakamoto will find a happy medium between classic Metroid gameplay and a little sexiness."

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!

Blaster_Master5922d ago

Ive been playing Metroid since it first came out on the NES, I was 5 I think. Man, its a truly epic series. Everyone likes super metroid the best, but to me part 1 is the pioneer. Adding sexiness and humanizing the character is probably one of the best business decisions they could ever do. Samus is a beast. I hope they just dont make it too cartoonish, its team ninja so im not that worried

She couldn't have a voice on the snes games could she, because of technology limitations (unless you find a gargled computer effect pleasing.)

I think her lack of voice on the gamecube games was due to nintendos lack of confidence and to be frank, their laziness. Its just like zelda, they could give link a voice but i suspect they just don't want the extra expense and translation work to deal with.

Humanising samus isn't a bonus, its essential. I mean, even robocop had a human side- without that depth, the character just wouldn't work. Even disneys lead characters who are often animals have human character, so for samus to be missing hers up until now is simply down to tecnical limitation/laziness.

ceiltsei5921d ago

The SNES could play voice samples without a problem. The NES on the other hand.. the Intellivision did just as good.

Zackstorm5921d ago

Not giving Samus a voice wasn't out of laziness lol. You can't play the Prime games and even claim those are lazy. I'd wager you haven't played them, because honestly it's just Samus alone. That's what the series has always been about.

This is interesting because Samus is one character people are interested in knowing more about. The guy being interviewed is right, there are many different Links, and his past is always sort of irrelevant in each game. Link should never have a voice. Ever. There's no voice for Link for a reason.

With Samus it does work--but it has to be treated delicately.

pcz5921d ago

And Samus' lack of voice is just out of sheer laziness. I mean think about it, to add a voice they would have had to add more cinematics to it. They completely avoided any scenerio where samus had to respond verbally to anybody- fail (on a minor level.)

But, think of the amount of extra work and time adding something as 'simple' as a voice would take. Think of translation and the extra expense...Think of the extra delays. Nintendo continually avoid any real lengthy voice acting in their games, which is counter creative as it could add another dimension to their games.

Starfox 64 must be their most verbal game, and even that was pretty limited.

Nintendo keep coming up with novel excuses for not adding voices to their characters, such as 'oh it would destroy the perception of link.' What a load of rubbish, mario has a voice and it practically helps to define him. If they do it right, it could really add a lot of depth.

Its complete nonsense anyway, think of movies... Silent movies could be quite emotive- Metropolis was great. But using actors and speach obviously opens up the possibilty of what is acheivable.

Of course nintendo don't use voice acting out of laziness, its really obvious in light of the facts. :)

"We sat down with Nintendo of America's localization producer Nate Bihldorff to learn more about this more realistic Samus, why they wouldn't give the same treatment to Link or Mario, and whether we'll see our star in a wii bikini. (You do know who's developing this game, don't you?)"
----------------------

Well, yes, I do. But bitmob apparently doesn't. Team Ninja is just there to help the R&D1 leftovers make a 3D game. This is all under the thumb of Sakamoto-san, and rightly so. And the cinematics are being done by D-Rockets, not Team Ninja.

I'm glad to hear about there being a good chunk of internal monologue. That's a big part of how it was handled in Fusion. And it kinda makes sense for someone who has been all alone 95% of the time.

Could this be the elusive Jessica Martin, the voice of Samus?

Nioh games definitely up there at the top alongside Ninja Gaiden BLK.

LoveSpuds1223d ago

There is a decent fan base for the Nioh games, but still think they are criminally overlooked and under appreciated.

I just bought the PS5 collection to replay them again with all their DLC, a sweet collection for my games shelf for sure.

Yea, those gardens haven't been plowed in over 10 years now though. Imagine if they cultivated it, let it grow again.

Starman691223d ago

Amazing what ya can do with a samurai sword lol 🤣

tehpees31223d ago

The honourable mention though.

TheSenorCheese1223d ago

originally it wasn't going to be included because of their take on Samus' character. But the gameplay's actually not bad.

Vits1222d ago

Honestly, I don't know if we can even blame them for that take. Nintendo's Sakamoto was credited as the writer and from what we learned later with the Retro Studios interviews for the Prime series, Nintendo apparently never saw Samus as this stoic badass that most of the west imagined her as. Going as far as describing her as "motherly".

shinoff21831223d ago

Ninja Gaiden was dope but I don't really care for alot of their games.

Well it almost killed Metroid so…

PhillyDillyDee1468d ago

Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

H91468d ago

I mean it was a killer

Terry_B1468d ago

Sometimes, I doubt that Reggie was that great for Nintendo after all.

2D Metroid Retrospective: Bring on the Remakes

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."

Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.

INMATEofARKHAM1687d ago

I just want them all in the Switch.
