Intel if you have a lot of money to spend.

AMD if you want a better price:performance ratio.

Kalowest5916d ago

I'm going to take your word for it, because you know your sh1t. Personally i like AMD more.

Pandamobile5916d ago

I used AMD CPU's for years and they served me great, it was only until about 10 months ago that I made the switch to Intel. Had some cash, figured an i7 would be a nice investment. But when I help build PC's for friends I usually go AMD because the CPU's are great power for the money (built 3 PC's with X3 720's), the motherboards are a lot cheaper, and they use dual channel DDR3 RAM, rather than triple channel.

Man i wish i had a gaming PC to play Brink, RAGE, Metro 2033, L4D, and truly experience TF2, and the HL series.

AMD quad cores are very affordable. Running AMD Phenom X4 myself and got it for under $200.

The Killer5916d ago

then i will go to AMD CPU, but do the AMD CPU need a AMD motherboard to work on?

and what is the equivalent of intel 3.6GHz in AMD CPU?

crck5916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

AMD for the low to mid range duo to quad core $50-$150. Intel i5-i7 quad cores if you have $180 and up to spend.

@1.5 Yes you'll need a Socket AM2+ to AM3 to run a AMD cpu. Please be more specific about which Intel you have running at 3.6ghz? But usually to match an Intel core 2 duo/quad chips the Phenom II chip has to run at about 400mhz higher. Your chip might be fast enough where it would be better to stick with Intel and go the i5/i7.

runnin a phenom II x4 940 overclocked to 3.6ghz and a 5870

can max out BC2 no sweat and avg around 100fps @1080p. I'm sure I save a few frames by disabling bloom but that's more of a personal preference. If you're building a pc strictly for gaming go Phenom II it's really high end performance at a sweet price. If your gonna be doing a lot of encoding, rendering, and gaming go I7.

I'm lookin at getting a third 3rd 24" 1080p monitor here soon for eyefinity. Words cannot describe how eyefinity draws you into the game. You can literally turn your head left and right and your still in the damn game.

The Killer5916d ago

so what will be the equivalent to my CPU in AMD?

i have 2GB RAM and geforce 7800GTX 256MB!! is it good for gaming these days? what games i can play with these specifications? i could play COD4 medium/low settings but could i play MW2 with it?

Virtual-on5916d ago

It's kinda hard to tell because of their differencess in architectural, and pentium 4 netburst architecture is not as good and efficient compared to old AMD athlon, let alone the current one (AMD Phenom). But I do believe even AMD Phenom II X3 720 (2.8 GHz) is much better than your current CPU.

As for your 7800GTX, even radeon HD4670 ($60-80) already beat your graphic card. It should be like this, 8800GT/9600GT > HD3850/4670 > 7800GTX (correct me if I'm wrong)

If you want a better answer, just go to the real tech site forums, guru3d forums or anandtech forums for example..

I have been completely out of touch when it comes to the new processors but can anyone please fill me in regarding intel iCore 3, 5 and 7? I currently have a Core2Duo but I am looking to buy a new laptop. Which one should I go for? Which CORE delivers better performance?

randomwiz5915d ago

Besides gaming, I do a lot of other processor heavy stuff. The core i7 is a monster cpu taking everything I throw at it.

I usually recommend AMD to my friends although they have money to spend, because they don't even max out dual core cpu's, i doubt they need to spend hundreds for a core i7.

Intel own 150 pounds and up in the uk. Everything from the i5 750 upwards, its completely owned by intel. Below that its a case by case basis, AMD typically being better value on stock performance for many users, intel often winning out factoring in overclocked performance for more computer savvy consumers.

When it comes to gaming it depends more on what graphics/CPU balance the game really favours. You can often get away with a good card and a less than top end CPU when an engine is more graphics bound, but typically a faster CPU is going to increase the maximum framerate. The faster the card gets, the more limited its performance will be by the central processor its paired with. So while a 5970 will still perform ok with a core 2, you really need a core i7 to completely unlock that sort of performance on offer.

Unquestionably right now the best performance for games is an Intel i7 and Ati graphics. However a typical AMD Phenom 2 quad setup and a midrange card like a radeon 48/57 or GTX260 series will obliterate pretty much anything you throw at it, @ common gaming resolutions. The more you spend the less performance increase you get for your money. You could build a high quality Core i7 950 machine with a 5870 for example for 1200 pounds, but a Phenom 2 X4 925 and a 5850 would have 80 percent of that performance for maybe 50 percent the price- Certainly more than enough for most people out there.

"I owned a Phenom II X4 for a few months before the heatsink gave out and it burnt out."

Author lost all credibility with that statement. Heatsinks are chunks of metal...they don't "give out".

What a 'tard.

I see AMD for gaming, Intel more for business use

So far I've used AMD for years in notebooks and haven't really had any major issues

execution175915d ago

yeah i have one of those all running at 2.20GHz,
i'mma wait for a quad to quad core AMD processor for the next update :P

is good enough, but Intel processors always kick AMD processors' butt overall? I'm not very knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, but that's what I understood from the reading.

AMD = Toyota and Intel = Ferrari?

logen999995916d ago

since when does AMD offer best FPS in games?

intel currently holds the fastest chip crown with i7. AMD simply offers a very competitively priced quad core solution that's aimed to compete with what intel offers in the same price range.

GIJeff5916d ago

i think its talking about in the price range. a 150 dollar AMD performs as good as a 250 dollar intel in games. And you can overclock the hell out of an amd these days... phenom 2 940 3.0 goes to 4.0 on air. AMD doesnt have anything to compete with the 1,000 i7 Extreme with its 7294 billion megabite cache... :P

meetajhu5916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

Gaming means both Intel and AMD but for rendering only Intel. But anybody building a AMD Phenom 2 is worthy gaming PC bang for the buck!

CaulkSlap5916d ago

Intel if you have the money. AMD if you want best price to performance for CPU/Mobo. AMD motherboards are MUCH cheaper.

I'm sure things will swing back the other way eventually. AMD was top of the line in the Athlon64 vs. Pentium4 era.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
