IGN Preview: SOCOM 4 Revealed

In the beginning, videogames offered only one story. Survive and kill. It's the story of war, and we're endlessly fascinated by it. It's on our televisions and our movie screens. It's in our blood.

But there's more to the story of battle than just pointing and shooting, although for a while that's all gamers really demanded from a war game. Having a gun in your hand and a friend at your side was all anyone really needed at first. But that's changing. Games are growing up. The developers at Sony's Zipper Interactive know it, and they've taken that knowledge deep into the heart of their new project, SOCOM 4.

IrishRepublicanArmy5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

They have been beating around the bush for too long now. the first ps3 socom was great but no single player. zippers first ps3 game was ground breaking but again no single player (MAG). now we finally have a next gen true socom experience that will likely shift a few consoles in the us. the previous socoms have been great now all we need is a next gen syphon filter. oh too many exclusives. this week i will buy heavy rain and then god of war. many more will get bf;bc and because im a gta fan i will have to get the dlc in a month. thank god i dont like ff13 and thank god gt5 was delayed.
Good job $ony keep up the great work.

EDIT: Have i left out any games? im fairly sure there was another i wanted to buy but i cant remember lol

btw i copied this from the other thread because it was failed. funny how the ign one after is failed approvel. could there be undercover ign agents on this site? The plot thickens!!

Blaster_Master5919d ago

If its anything like Confrontation then Ill pass. I wont believe it till I see it in my hands. Quit yapping and just wait till its ready to talk about it Sony! Gesh.

sinncross5919d ago

Dude, it wont be like Confrontation. :)

Firstly this Socom is being done by the original developers Zipper. 2ndly, the game has a single player campaign with an additional 32 player online mode.

My only reservation is that it sounds from the preview that there may be no offline co-op option.

Al Bundy5919d ago

Zipper DID NOT make Socom: Confrontation. Slant Six did.

Meodia_Art5919d ago

Socom was the best TPS last gen, and I can't wait for the 4th one. Zipper delivers!!!!!!

TOO PAWNED5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

I hope you guys stop listening to that freak Gamesblow/Silogon. First he said it was MS3, than Starhawk. I knew it was BS, so i ignored him, but a lot of you gave him attention. Ignore that freak
I am talking about this
http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

TOO PAWNED5919d ago

Sounds impressive i am interested.

thereapersson5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

I just hope this isn't the title that Sony is planning on announcing tonight. I want to see another Syphon Filter, damnit!

edit:

I just saw the other article. It IS Socom; that dashes my hope of a new SF game any time soon... :(

sikbeta5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

Like Confrontation?

lol

That's Not Gonna happen, this Time ZIPPER will do The Job, like with every Awesome SOCOM...

This Time, It's Personal...

Gaming FTW!!!

AKNAA5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

For the first time, I'm actually interested in a socom game since it it now has a 12 hrs. single player campaign, which is a plus because it's practically double the play time of most FPS out there.

never was really an online multiplayer type of guy, so this added story into the mix could definitely lure me into the series, just as long as the graphics are up to standard like other PS3 exclusives;)
yes, I'm a graphics whore ever since Killzone 2...

5919d ago
ABizzel15919d ago

Ok after reading this, I'm interested now. I've never been a fan of SOCOM, but the single player focus has me curious. Hopefully it'll take more than 2 bullets to kill you now which is nice for realism, but sucks in a game.

The game looks good right now, not great, but good. Character models are decent, but the environment looks great.

This may be the first SOCOM I buy.

Hands Up For Games5919d ago

I cant believe thats the Username you have?!?!

Does no one else find this offensive?

5919d ago
Therealspy17765919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

On their 4th installment? I wonder if the ps3-only guys will make the same complaints about this that they are making about Halo?

I for one think this is great news for anyone who likes socom. i know tons of people who were really disappointed with the last release, so hopefully this makes up for it. maybe i'll even find myself testing out the series for the first time since the first one.

EDIT: a disagree in less than a minute. with which part are you disagreeing? care to respond? or is it just that i pointed out potential for hypocrisy?

anti-gamer5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

too bad that socom 1,2 and 3 was one of the best MP and TPS last gen. And most of games multiply system are copy of SOCOM multiply system.

5919d ago
2Spock5919d ago

Wow i was hoping for a something good, but oh well. I know people are saying Zipper didn't make the last Socom game. But they should have overseen their game and made sure it was done well. I will not buy, play or even look at this game. I am just upset this was the big announcement.

snaz275919d ago

is this the surprise game that gttv were talking about? its just im a little confused... ive seen that this game was reveiled on psblog or something... but the gttv thing said it was an exclusive reveal... so how was it exclusive? anyway not that it matters, this looks pretty awesome... more exclusives the better, from here on out i see the ammount of exclusives really ramp up... all the hard work building the engines has been done for most of the games, now they have so many awesome engines. games can come every 12-16 months rather than 3-5 years!

Microsoft Xbox 3605919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

OH HELL YES!!! OMG Socom 4!

I LOVE YOU ZIPPER!!!!

Slant 6 were the biggest amateurs ever.

morganfell5919d ago

I love how these people attack Confrontation that have not played it since launch or likely at all. Let me explain gaming 101, Slant Six had zero say so when the game launched. But since that time they have worked hard and any person here that has actually gamed Confrontation recently knows how tight that game plays.

That said, I am looking forward to another SOCOM where tactics and a brain actually make a difference in the battle.

Please make my dreams come true!!

PatDH5919d ago

TROLL EATER - Shouldn't you be eating yourself?

Anyway, i'm pumped for SOCOM 4. I played S1 offline and S2 online, religiously. FAVOURITE game from the PS2 era haha.
Played Confrontation alot aswell, was buggy as hell but atleast Slant6 has kept releasing patches and such to try and fix the mess that Confrontation used to be - It's actually pretty decent now.

But i'm damn happy Zipper is back in charge with this one - Can't wait.

some real shooter not the shiny power ranger stuff for children to play on the Xcrap360

mcnablejr5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

Didnt the last socom game on the ps3 do awfully, wasnt it completely broken?

Edit: might be talking about a different game, i know it was sold with a headset.

Defectiv3_Detectiv35919d ago

Actually, Socom:Confrontation wasn't a true sequel. It was more or less a quick port of the PS2 version - they shut the servers down for PS2 so they came out with 'Confrontation' to apppease the fanbase.

That being said, I'm glad they are limiting this game to 32 players. I'd take the destructable environments and better graphics any day over the likes of MAG's massive but soulless battlefields.

redsquad5919d ago

"Single player"...?
"Story"...?

Not being into online MP as I am, I'm now interested in a SOCOM title!

dustgavin5919d ago

Info from 1up.

"The plot revolves around a military coup in a South Asian country. Players take control of a five-man squad to stop him in the single-player campaign. IGN reports that the 12-hour mission features motion-captured characters in the directorial style of Uncharted 2. All weapons and supplies will be either given at the start of the game, or found inside the missions, to replicate the feeling of searching for supplies in a combat scenario. Of course, multiplayer is back as well, promising 32-person multiplayer with new Special Forces units. Other than that, details are sparse, but we're sure to see more in the coming months."

This sounds very promising!

Morituri5919d ago

1. Socom is one of the best tactical shooter franchises ever. Period.
2. The original Zipper team is making it.
3. Finally it gets the PS3 treatment.
4. Sony studios share tech. Imagine the results of the collaboration for Socom 4. We already have Naughty Dog on board. Nuff said.

Skyreno5919d ago

Sweet Socom back and finally zipper making it :) must watch video lol

SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4 and MAG servers shutting down in January 2014

Original-Gamer.com: "Sony has decided to shutdown the servers for SOCOM Confrontation, SOCOM 4, and MAG in January 2014. SOCOM 4 and MAG were developed by Zipper Interactive while SOCOM Confrontation was developed by Slant Six Games."

Abash4689d ago

Very sad to hear, hopefully Sony continues SOCOM and MAG on PS4

BiggCMan4689d ago

MAG is not even too old yet, this doesn't make any sense. It's still fairly populated with the dedicated fans, even one of my friends recently got back into it. Hell even Confrontation has a pretty decent sized dedicated player base, I think only 4 is pretty deserted.

This really makes no sense, the games aren't old. They better be making new games in the future at least.

HammadTheBeast4689d ago

Come on now, MAG's pretty old, their new console is coming out, and there's only about 5000 individual players coming on every month, if that.

It's run its course, a fantastic game while it lasted. Hopefully, we can get a few massive battles in before the servers close, knowing the community, I expect it.

Also, a lot of MAG is on Dust 514 now, which isn't amazing, but is still alright.

kwyjibo4689d ago

It makes sense.

MAG is no longer selling, so Sony is making no money from it. In fact, it's costing them money to keep it alive.

Maybe with PS4 pay-for-online and microtransactions (read: ongoing support), you'll get a better service.

decrypt4689d ago (Edited 4689d ago )

@HammadTheBeast

"Come on now, MAG's pretty old"

No it isnt, you want really old check out:

Warcraft 3, Starcraft 1, Counter strike. Then tell me why those games are still running?

Sony closing servers to older games is just a tactic to force users on board their next console.

Its the nature of console gaming, too controlled with console gamers having little to no rights at all. Hell if Sony closes PS3 online services after PS4 launch there is nothing console gamers can do about it.

JAMurida4689d ago

MAG is barely alive now these days. Domination is only playable early AM hours (CST) when the JP players get on and that only last a few hours. Only thing going on is Sabo or Suppression.

Lucky to get an Interdiction or Acquisition going.

Utalkin2me4689d ago

Kind of ironic i recently put mag back in and got all the updates and restored all my skill points. And OMG i could not kill anybody for nothing, it was quite weird. I used to be beast at that game and i went negative for a few games before finally i quit. Felt like i was doing worse for the team then helping.

It wasn't very populated then, but hate to hear that.

BattleAxe4689d ago (Edited 4689d ago )

H-Hour is the new Socom. You can still support the development studio by way of Paypal, and you still get access to all of the Kickstarter rewards, but only until the end of the month.

http://sofstudios.com/index...

H-Hour is set to come out on PS4 and PC.

Corpser4689d ago

@all

MAG was released in 2010, just 3 years ago! You're telling me I should expect online servers to be around for just 3 years?

GasTankKiller4688d ago (Edited 4688d ago )

"It's still fairly populated with the dedicated fans."

You only see one side of this. Sony sees the stats of how many players are playing on average. No reason to waste server power for a handle full of people. Yes that handle full could be a few thousand but still.

From what I remember during MAGs development. Zipper was given a blank check and setup a server farm for MAG.

No reason to let all those servers go to waste. They will most likely use them for the PS4.

GameCents4689d ago (Edited 4689d ago )

Where's the outrage? They effectively saying that you've been renting MAG all this time. Online only games shouldn't have their servers shut so soon.

HammadTheBeast4689d ago

There's about 200 people on at any time now.... and most from the free demo.

Corpser4689d ago

^^

So? You're perfectly fine an online-only game that people are still playing will be shut down

JAMurida4689d ago

#Corpser

Yes there is a community, but a very small one. It's the same case with White Knight Chronicles 1/2. Both MAG and WKC I've played heavy enough to say they had a very small community that most likely didn't warrant Sony paying the money to keep the servers going for any longer. It sucks, but it happens when it's a case like this.

If anything, I'm more surprised that MAG is being shutdown much later than WKC was. IMO, it should of been the other way around.

Sitdown4689d ago (Edited 4689d ago )

Haha, some have no clue of exactly what you just did there. Or am I reading too much into it?

No_Limit4689d ago

In other news, the 2007 X360 online only game, Shadowrun, is still playable on its online server. This show where the priority is for both companies when it comes to online gaming.

Corpser4689d ago

MAG community is far from dead, why?

And no wonder GameStop has been selling the game used for $0.99. It's an online-only game too

fr0sty4689d ago

It's a shame, I enjoy playing MAG more than just about any other shooter out there. I know many do not agree, as it does have some very obvious flaws, but it's a gem of a game beneath them.

MidnytRain4689d ago

Whoa, a dollar?? Are you serious?

Gridloc4689d ago

That's the only problem I have with digital downloads and multiplayer only games. If they shut the servers down your screwed...

Ray1864689d ago

If it has a lan option you can always use x-link.

fr0sty4689d ago (Edited 4689d ago )

I would hope such a service would work for a game like MAG, enough of the community (that is already dwindling) would need to know about that capability, and actually be bothered to want to try using it in order for it to work. I think it's just going to kill the community enough to make the game unplayable, as MAG relies on very large matches.

SIRHC134689d ago

H-Hour. We need you. Deliver the tactical third person shooter goods that we deserve!

MoonConquistador4689d ago

And in a run up to a sequel they should be giving this game away free on PS+ at least, or just make it a free to play game. Its a game I always wanted to platinum but there are never enough people on for domination games etc

Great game though

MidnytRain4689d ago

I do think Sony is expecting PlanetSide 2 to fill the massive shooter niche.

Former Sony Devs Join New Team

Announced yesterday, a couple of former Zipper developers are lacing up their boots again in preparation to begin working on new tactical shooter, Takedown.

Thoughts of new development team?

SilentNegotiator5086d ago

They're former Zipper employees.

Expectations at minimal, Captain!

SuperBeast8115087d ago

I was looking forward to that game but now that zipper is touching it? I dont know they been making crap for almost 10 years now Socom 1 and 2 are the only thing good they have done

JoeReno5087d ago (Edited 5087d ago )

i really disagree, Unit13 is still my most enjoyed Vita game yet. it was quite good, and I for one am glad to hear this news.

Sithlord-Gamble5087d ago

My thoughts exactly.

Unit 13 is awesome, and IMO MAG is underrated.

fei-hung5087d ago

I bought Unit13 on release but only started playing it yesterday. I cannot believe how underrated and under appreciated this game is.

This game is not only better than the likes of COD in terms of military shooter, but the stealth gameplay is beautiful! It's like MGS but with a more military feel.

SuperBeast8115087d ago

I dont have a Vita yet so I havnt tried it maybe I spoke too soon I was just really burnt by Socom 4 but Ill try Unit 13 when I have the cash.

ExposingLames5087d ago

i've learned this site is nothing but kiss asses and fanboys so I usually don't even comment anymore. I read the news and leave. Although your comment will be "disagreed" into oblivion it is 100% fact. Its also the reason ZIPPER GOT CLOSED DOWN. I'm sure the lower level workers aren't really to blame, but there is no denying their games and how bad they were and what they did to SOCOM. What a joke. Glad Zipper is gone.

dead_eye5087d ago

opinion can never be 100% fact.

ExposingLames5087d ago

@ dead eye. its not opinion it is fact. go search "sony closes Zipper interactive" it didnt happen because they were making great games.

xursz5087d ago

"Big Huge Games" got shut down as well (I hope they get picked up by a worthy publisher), yet KoA was greatly received. I personally think MAG is definitely underrated too.

t0mmyb0y5087d ago

There's a reason you have so many disagrees XD

doctorstrange5087d ago

"TAKEDOWN will be developed on PC as the lead platform, and then brought to consoles afterwards"

NYC_Gamer5087d ago (Edited 5087d ago )

I'm happy that Zipper developers found new jobs...

GamingPerson5087d ago (Edited 5087d ago )

PC is lead platform then consoles coming after.
so the tags are messed up.

I can't wait to see what David Jaffe does on pc unless it's a facebook game.
