How Sony Lost Its Way

I believe Sony has the chutzpah to do more than make me-too products-they're capable of making market-expanding products that become household names. But until they take a hard look at themselves in an honest light, Sony will continue to embarrass themselves by remaining the company that says they're bringing us the future-then sells us products even they don't believe in.

Another Sony hate article? must be Wednesday...

what am I saying there are Sony hate articles everyday

kaveti66165916d ago

“Jealousy is nothing more than a fear of abandonment”

blitz06235916d ago

I guess the leap year bug deleted the writer's trophies. Now he's venting off in some lame article

-Alpha5916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

The guy is talking about Sony as a whole and he seems to have legit points. Let's not act as if Sony is the world's best, lovable company just because they made Playstation. I don't even know why this article is here seeing as its tech news, I suppose its because it mentions the Playstation brand. But lets not start hating on the hater just because he says something negative. I'd like some good reasons as to why you guys have such a problem with an article that makes criticisms. I personally like reading well-thought out articles more than "Why Sony Rocks Socks" or something. If those articles can get approved with no one caring about the legitimacy of the writer then you should take the good with the bad. Let's not be partial to what people have to say.

Personally, I don't know much about Sony as a whole to really form an opinion. I like their products. I own three Sony Bravias, a PS2, PS3, and two surround sound systems of theirs. One of my tvs prematurely busted and Sony sent me their latest model with a $100 or so fee.

The writer is entitled to his opinion. Let's not scoff at it because "he may have lost his trophies and is venting". Maybe Sony HAS lost their way as a company: they've been hit hard by recession, they are not the leaders in the gaming industry, music industry, or other industries. They used to own gaming and music with the walkman if I'm not mistaken. I find Sony, specifically with the Playstation as that is how far my expertise with them goes, has definitely fallen this gen from the glorious days of the PS2. Let's not deny that. They've definitely long since made up for it, but that doesn't mean that they haven't "fallen" from their old greatness.

Anyways, don't really care for the article, and I'm certainly not going to hate on it just because it says something negative. There is so much pro-PS3 stuff on this site that I find people get really upset over news like this. And it's not just the Playstation/Sony that gets "hate articles", but people sure as hell are much more responsive to it than an "Xbox" hate article. Take for example the "My First Week with the Xbox" article which nobody minded despite the fact that the idiot writer played on an Arcade and had the audacity to compare to a full-featured PS3. Where was the defense force there? People are so sensitive with the media saying anything negative about the PS3 and personally I find it very militant. People will cry about bias when something negative is said about their console, yet fail to see that by constantly shutting down critical articles they are trying to go from one end of the extreme to the other. Again, this is TECH news, yet it manages to find its way to the front page where thousands of gamers are going to read and automatically assume that it has to do everything with Playstation.

deadreckoning6665916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

I respect the writer for having an opinion, but DAMN, it was only a ONE day PSN outtage. It wasn't even that serious. It happened on a Monday too, the day when gamers proly game the least.

@BRG- Yes, I'll try reading the article before commenting in the future. Its a crazy idea, but it might make sense :)

thorstein5916d ago

I think N4G needs to ban the posters of flamebait garbage. I mean really: How Sony Lost its Way? At what point does selling over 20 million PS3s and twice as many PS2s equate to losing their way.

At what point does An extremely successful console, movie player (blu ray) and business plan equate fail?

This is bs and it belongs in the BS bin.

randomwiz5916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

its not the article, its the fact that this article got approved on n4g.

We've all seen "Sony Arrogant with the PS3" articles before, this article provides nothing different from the other articles that've already been submitted on n4g.

Judging by that, we can infer this article was submitted solely with the intention to gather all the fanboys on this site for a massive bubble popping disagreeing war.

Toenado5916d ago

These articles are just getting more and more frivolous.

Saaking5916d ago

So wait, the console that's given us GOTY quality games for two years in a row has lost it's way? LBP swept the awards in 2008, UC2 in 2009, and a whole bunch of Ps3 exclusives look to do the same this year.

If Sony's lost their way, I hope they get even more lost becuase I love it.

BRG90005916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

The article doesn't even mention the glitch this week. And only mentions PS3 in one section. Read before commenting? :|

Edit @Saaking: The article is not about the PS3 losing its way. Maybe you haven't noticed, but you don't play games on a Sony. You play it on their product, the Playstation 3. The two are not synonymous.

Hell, this article isn't even posted in the PS3 section of N4G, it's in the tech section. Why are so many fanboys jumping to bash the writer of a tech article without even clicking the link?

FACTUAL evidence5916d ago

Has anyone noticed the abundant amount of "teh do0mz!"/fail articles Sony's been getting the last few days? lmao they want sony to fail so hard...and they know that FF13, and GOW3 is going to be the sh!t, that's why they are trying to slow down the momentum. They know as soon as FF13, and GOW3 comes out the ps3 hype is going to skyrocket more than it is now, so the media has to put it down for a while...lmao nice try guys.

kaveti66165916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

screw this article and this site

-Alpha5916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

Good point, but then what about all the ridiculous amounts of "Top 5 PS3 games of 2010, Most anticipated games of March, Why ME2 isn't as great as Heavy Rain, Ten Reasons Why March will rock, etc" articles that constantly get recycled onto this site?

There are just way too many article topics and ideas that will get approved just because the writer plays it safe and decides to please the fans. It's not fair to bash an article for recycling just because they are repeating things that are considered negative or inflammatory. It's one thing to be flaming, and another for someone to take an article defensively. Already people are saying this guy is a fanboy, or upset because he lost his trophies, etc.

I find that people have such big insecurities with the image of their console that they have to blast negative articles just because they are negative, yet they have no good reason why. But when a positive article gets approved for the upteenth time, nobody has a problem and it's all cupcakes and rainbows. People need to stop being so defensive, but I find that the mentality is that if one side lets their guard down than the other side will just keep on attacking which leads to complete and constant hostility between the pathetic internet phenomena known as the "console war".

smittyjerkins5916d ago

I am calling Bullsh!t on this article because Sony has committed to quite a few products. So Sony has sent out a lot of products and hoped that they sticked, but hell what else are they supposed to do? Blindly follow a single product and hope that works, and if not it just becomes and "oh well" moment.

Also, (I might be contradicting myself here) there are cases of Sony supporting a product to the bitter end. Betamax, anyone? Sony supported Betamax for 25 YEARS before throwing in the towel and saying, "Yeah, VHS beat us out."

I agree with what this article is saying, but not the point they are making.
Oh well *shrug*.

cool cole5916d ago

@ Alpha
I'm starting to get really tired of people posting paragraphs of they're opinion on something. If you got something to say don't write and essay.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5916d ago

Sony was thinking the PS3 would be just as huge as the PS2 and failed. The PS2 was a monster 140 million console with 16 million sold in its 2nd year alone. Fact is the casual gamers left Playstaton and went to Nintendo while some of the hardcore went for a 360.

Redlogic5915d ago

it was a well written article and makes a valid point. all you dopes who just comment to comment, READ THE ARTICLE, the ps3 is barely mentioned in this. its about the entire range of products...jeez lighten up (go read the article please. pretty please?)

Redlogic5915d ago

article mentions the ps3 once. and it isn't an insult. so why even post a comment like that. btw i disagree(d)

Darkfocus5915d ago (Edited 5915d ago )

cool cole5915d ago

@Darkfocus
We're on N4G dude, not in English class.

Anon19745915d ago (Edited 5915d ago )

This article is guilty of some serious revisionist history and awful leaps in logic.

First off, blah blah blah... proprietary formats. Why on earth SHOULDN'T Sony make money off products they paid to develop? Sony takes huge risks developing new products. Some take off, some don't and we're to believe Sony is guilty of something for not sharing? Maybe they should just develop products for everyone and then run around handing the tech out like the goddamnned Teck Santa. Give me a break.

Then the article is critical of Sony daring to try to make money. "Oh noes! Sony doesn't make a product and someone else does and then they might want to try making that product too. The monsters!"

And then this little gem. "Sony spent the next three years struggling in a videogame market they once dominated."

Yeah, that's right. The PS3, despite outselling it's main competition for the 3 years since it launched worldwide, even considering it was twice the price to become the 3rd fastest selling console in history, all the while still selling the PS2 and PSP - somehow this is Sony "struggling".

What a garbage article. It's like Sony kicked this guy's dog or something and now he has to write a nasty letter to get even. Pathetic. Don't bother reading this junk.

Dread5915d ago

@alpha

great comment

we need more level headed people like u in n4g.

there are too many fanboys, and we know they are fanboys because, inter alia and as you pointed out, it is obvious that they did not even read the article. they just immediately reacted negatively because they read the title and it is not pro-sony. even worst, i find that the article is being critical because the writer respects the company and wants to see it improve. it is ironic that the fanboys in n4g are so pro sony that they cannot even c the companies problems.

i agree with u 100%

Microsoft Xbox 3605915d ago

So when Sony delivers two consistent GOTY games that both swept the awards in most categories it's called "losing its way"? Sony knows exactly what their doing. After GT5 the PS3 will guarantee surpass the 360 install base.

cmrbe5915d ago (Edited 5915d ago )

Agree with most points except for your assumption that Sony some how lost the gaming market. I am interested in why you think that.

Is the PS2 not on the market anymore?. Did Sony somehow lost the 140 million PS2 when they launched the PS3?. Was Sony suppose to sell 30 million PS3 consoles on day one to lead current gen market share and maintain their 70% of the market?. Has anyone been able to sell 30 million on day 1?. Is that reasonable?. I am asking this because thats what some people haters mostly expected Sony to do out of the gate when they expected Sony to dominate again just like last gen this early.

The problem with alot of people like you is that you use PS2 success after 7 years to point out that the PS3 or Sony has lost it in less than 4 years.

What i find even more ironic is that you guys use PS2 numbers to claim that Sony has lost it with the PS3 then turn around and disregard PS2 numbers like they don't exist. If we use PS2 numbers like you guys are using then Sony really is still the market leader in gaming which they are. What will it be?. Use PS2 numbers or not?.

If we look solely on current gen market then yes Sony is 3rd and last but here is the kicker. MS had 100% of current market when they launched first. So in other words MS lost current gen market share to Nin and Sony so fast to the point that Sony is breathing down MS neck with the wii already ahead. So who really is the looser here?.

Look, truth is we really don't know who will lead until all 3 consoles have past their peak in another 3-4 years to determine who really will be the leader in current gen market share.

It really dosen't matter though. The truth is Sony really are the ones leading the traditional gaming market in in funding new and exciting games as well as bringing exclusive gaming that are second to none.

Edit: @Jason. The PS2 second year saw GT3, GTA3, MGS2, FFX with a price point of $299. The PS3 has just just $299 last year and without its major hitters.

Sony only cares about selling on average 10 million console for 10 years to reach 100 million at least. They don't care about anything else. Here is a fun fact for you. The PS3 is the 3rd fastest selling console behind the PS2 when with all the competition and high price point comapred to the PS2. Yes, the PS3 is selling faster that the all mighty PS1 and it will only sell faster once it hits 199 and all its major hitters are out.

-Alpha5915d ago

@cool cole

The problem I have with condensing is that it leads to people misinterpreting what I say. Far too many people use the same faulty logic on my comments that they use on this article: if I say something negative about Sony then I get called a Bungie alternate account. I'll try to keep my comments shorter, but I don't see the big issue why it can't be long.

@cmrbe

My point was that the PS2, like the PsOne set a quality standard at launch for Sony, but the PS3 did not. They did everything different: very expensive console, no big hitters or known games at launch, and they struggled financially. The PS2 dominated and there was no reason for the PS3 not to, but MS proved that they were good enough to gain a share in the market, and Nintendo totally catapulted their way into success by proving that the casual market was not to be undermined. Unlike the PS2 and PSOne the PS3 struggled at launch, plain and simple and today it's in third place still. Imagine believing that in the PS2 era. My point isn't that Sony is doing bad by any means. I personally prefer my PS3 over a 360, (granted I don't have a 360 but I'm completely content with not owning one). The PS3 is doing fantastic, and like I said, I don't know much about Sony out of gaming, but in terms of gaming, it's clear that they failed not only to maintain the success of last gen, but they also did below standard practice. However, this is all at launch, and now, the PS3 is doing so much better. I truly am ecstatic with how Sony has managed to put up the biggest fight in their First Party Games.

Anyways, the point is, this article, though it repeats many things people already know or may have heard, has a legit point, and just because it says something negative doesn't mean it should be banished. Positive/Pro-Console articles are constantly recycling content about how great LIVE is or how great Sony's studios are, but nobody has a problem with that because it doesn't ruffle feathers. People are much too insecure and get upset with negative articles, I personally do not see the need to constantly look out for these articles. I can care less about how I want people to perceive the image of a brand, unless they do it with dirty, illogical tactics. I don't find it to be the case with this article.

I guess this comment is too long, eh cole?

the other "how (insert name) lost its way" articles?

MNicholas5915d ago

Now he's whining.

These Dreamcast/Xbox/HD-DVD player fans are all the same.

Here's the reality:

Sony didn't "loose it's way" as much as Japan lost it's manufacturing advantage. Samsung and similar companies were able to produce high quality products at much lower prices just as Toyota, Honda and Nissan did to Ford, GM and Chrysler, and now Hyundai etc are doing to Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

The smart companies find ways around this. Sony made a deal with Samsung to jointly manufacture their LCD tvs. If you own a Samsung TV, chances are the panel has Sony patents all over it.

Similarly, Toyota, Honda and Nissan are trying to lower their manufacturing costs with factories in the US and China.

As for Sony's Qualia line ... it was simply their attempt to out-Apple Appe. It's been a long time goal of theirs to be able to be able to increase hardware margin through more attractive design and UI but there is still only one Apple.

Christopher5915d ago

"If you think this is too harsh an appraisal, think about the many Sony products that arbitrarily ended up in our 50 Worst Gadgets of the Decade roundup."

So, essentially, if we think you're harsh, read another article on your site written by your site that further explains your dislike for Sony?

Look, personally I think all companies are like this. I don't see Sony being any worse than Microsoft, Nintendo, Toshiba, or anyone else. They're not as good at marketing as Microsoft, but there are things that Sony does that are much better than what Microsoft puts out.

In the end, I don't think they've 'lost their way,' especially considering the user goes all the way back to the 80s to say they've lost it - what was their way if you're stuck in the post-walkman to now days to compare their lost?

Some of you need to remove your ps3 fanboy goggles for a minute and look at the big picture. This article brings some fair & valid points. Good read.

Immortal3215915d ago

the ps3 is to advance. the ps3 didn't do a 360degree turn and step back. the ps3 move forward and change. The ps3 graphics are better than the 360, even though the 360 gpu is more superior which to me don't make since at all.

What exactly did Sony do to these guys to cause such resentment? This article was completely pointless except to bash a company for no legitimate reason.

And since they brought it up, about that 50 Worst Gadgets list from December... I like how they mention the EyeToy, which tried something new and released a fair amount of games and sold decently, but there's no mention of Microsoft's exact replica which had practically no software which it was compatible with. EyeToy sucked, but the Vision Camera didn't? Right... And they bash Blu-Ray? Uh, last I checked Blu-Ray is doing just fine and people like it. But I guess it was a "worst gadget" and HD-DVD wasn't, like you say. Yep. You convinced me.

callahan095915d ago

What are you talking about? I didn't say anything of the sort, I was wondering why THIS Sony hate article was written. Nothing about other articles. And THIS article is lame. Why single out Sony when Microsoft is just as easy of a target? They call out the proprietary memory cards for PSP, the EyeToy, Blu-Ray, the PS3 being expensive, etc. Turn the tables you can talk about MS and their proprietary hard drives for the 360, the Vision Camera, HD-DVD add-on, the 360 high failure rate (RROD). It's easy to point out all the failures of a company. Why do this against Sony and let their competitors off the hook for failures of equal magnitude? That's the problem I have with this lame article.

They WERE an arrogant company that seems to be badly managed. It appears as if they have no clue why some of their products succeed.

They make many great products, but fail to support them properly. Buy a Vaio Laptop lately? Forget updated drivers! You paid how much for it?

Bought a recent Sony digital camera? You might get stuck with their proprietary format! How much does memory stick cost?

Bought a Sony portable digitial music player? It wasn't until recently that they started supporting MP3!

In a world where there are plenty of competitors and you are unable to differentiate yourself with the experience (alas Apple), there is no reason NOT to select a cheaper and sometimes better performing competitor.

With that said, the PS3 is one of the most open consoles I have ever seen. I'm was surprised! Ever since Stringer came on board, things are turning around for the better though.

thehitman5916d ago

Im as terrible misformed as your post but arent drivers updated based on the O/S and not the brand name of the laptop? Never went to update my driver and it ask me what type of computer I have just o/s so idk where u get that info.

Dont know much about Sony camera since dont have 1 and tbh havent seen som1 used a camera in a long time w/ all these phones w/ built-in 1s.

@ Sony music player lol I had a cd player made by Sony like 5 years ago that played mp3 as well so idk how u came up w/ that.

Sony is a leading company in Innovation and design, they are a mutlibillion dollar company for a reason. Im suprised people are as dumb as you but maybe after my post things will turn around for the better.

IdleLeeSiuLung5916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

Clearly you are ignorant or just plain dumb!

Drivers are often offered by the manufacturer of each device/chip/component included in the laptop. Got an Intel or Nvidia graphics chip? Intel or Nvidia chipset? What audio chip do you have? Most reputable computer manufacturer will provide updated drivers on their website when and if it is available for each component. Check Dell, HP, Lenovo or just about any other big brand seller!

I'm glad you like your cell phone camera, but that still doesn't invalidate my point. Besides a dedicated camera takes much better pictures.

Regarding MP3 in Sony music players:

http://blogs.pcworld.com/st...

Who is the idiot now? I hope for your sake it is ignorance!

Christopher5915d ago

I bought a Sony camera and agree with the proprietary format. While the camera is an awesome piece of machinery, having to pay $80 for a memory stick that would cost me $20 using a normal SD card is a pain in the arse. Same thing with the PSP.

So, agree with you on that and I'm very glad the only proprietary element of the PS3 is the disc drive. Unfortunately, I approve of that proprietary piece of hardware unlike Sony's other attempts.

I think Sony would have done much better forgetting about UMD and putting their games out on SD sticks with encryption. Would have increased manufacturing of the flash drives, which would have greatly brought down the costs for the public and made it much easier to deal with buying Sony proprietary devices.

Harry1905916d ago (Edited 5916d ago )

Maybe this is an article about Sony Corp as a whole. If it is, they are entitled to their opinion. I only care about the gaming division: Playstation. Life is actually sweet for any Playstation enthusiast right now. That behemoth is throwing games left and right. Golden age of videogames, don't let nostalgia alter your sense of logic.

Yup, this is an article about something else. It's just strange to find tech news on the front page, especially when it concerns DRM that's not even associated to gaming devices. My bad.

I fail to see how this is AI shhhhlllloooop. Looking at the different games they showed, this has made many of them look far better.

isarai_lee49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

It's AI slop because it ignores the artists intent and changes the details ESPECIALLY when it comes to character faces. The scariest part of it is introducing it as the next stage of DLSS, a feature where the current iteration already has controversy surrounding it and for quite a lot of games cannot be fully disabled. So reasonably the precident is already set for what path this could take, and it's not good

blacktiger49d ago

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost and so on. Many of the lighting deletes shadow, including shadow on the face like eyes even chin.

Chard48d ago

Why stop at art when it comes to human input - why not just have AI play the game for us, remove human input altogether

theshizer49d ago

If you don’t like it, just don’t enable it. Personally I think it looks great from the videos I have seen.

isarai_lee49d ago

And what about when you can't? Cause there's plenty of games where you cannot fully disable dlss already, i mean we're well into an era where it's a major crutch for developers to cover up their cut corners, why would this be any different?

blacktiger49d ago

You are playing with people's money and allow Nvidia to scam you.

In case you didn't watch the video then let me point just one part. It overrides the lighting. Then the question of what is the point of ray tracing cost. This is all lie to raise the cost of the graphic card.

Change entire game through mods thus changing how the developers intended the game to be is ok. - Internet

All the comments I see are reminding me of how we got to the current state of gaming when microtransactions were first introduced: "It's completely optional guys, we promise! If you don't like it just don't buy it!"

I think we all know how that ended up.

I had the same exact thought the first time this was brought up in a separate article about a week ago. Took me straight back to the conversations surrounding “horse armor.” Just don’t buy it they said. Years later, many IPs I previously enjoyed are so infected with monetization schemes that I don’t even consider purchasing them anymore.

DLSS 5 and the like are the same thing wrapped in a different package. History rhymes but many of us never learn from it.

Biggest Scam. Overrides lighting and shadow. So why keep Ray tracing? It's all a scam to raise graphic card. We now see Nvidia with Microsoft downturn anything against them. Sony is next!
