Sony says PS3 clock problem is 'fixed' - but won't say how

Playstation3 owners can safely reconnect to the PlayStation Network - but has Sony really fixed the problem that killed systems, or just let the clock roll over?

The problem was fixed at 6PM EST and 3PM PST. The clocks didn't roll over (Except maybe in Japan). They probably just fixed the certificate verification server-side to ignore the issue for the rest of the day. A proper fix for the clock will likely come in the next firmware update.

Hopefully this mess up will finally make Sony realize the importance of Auto-Syncing trophies.

Actually not quite, they developed certain temporary workaround. I had a glitched on my PS3 right after they fixed it giving me a nice idea what was done but I won't dwell on it in case some hackers would want to adopt this idea.

Shadow Flare5929d ago

Sony won't say how the ps3 got fixed because the truth is, the ps3 fixed itself and sony are taken a back as to how they created this perfect machine

LukaX235929d ago

The problem was caused without a firmware update, why would we need another update to fix it?

Mr Logic5929d ago

6:00 PM EST is 0:00 GMT so it happened right as March 1(2) came.

darthv725929d ago

The problem wasn't so much in the PSN at all. From what I have read, the RTC in the original ps3's were coded to think the even years are leap years. True there is such a day as feb 29th, it doesnt happen on every even year but every 4th year (which is even btw). Your system is saying one date when it is another. The PSN effect was thinking you are in a date that is not valid and would not let you on. Old units effected not new ones.

Basically, letting it go into the next full day puts the clock back into sequence so the time update could be made. Turning mine on this morning showed the date as being 3/1/2010. This is not so disimilar from older PC's having the RTC coded with 2 digit years instead of 4. It took some software and a bios update to fix them but from that point on they never made RTC with 2 digit years.

They will most likely fix it with a fw update to patch the RTC so it knows that leap years are every 4th not 2nd. For now, it is basically good till 2014. Slim's dont have this problem most likely because they use a different RTC than the originals.

FragGen5929d ago

The clock rollover autofixed it, and they'll roll it into a firmware or similar update sometime over the next four years. No biggie at this point, really.

EvilBlackCat5929d ago

LOL! get da fnck out of here LOL!

pixelsword5929d ago

It's fixed, that's all they need to tell anyone.

beardpapa5928d ago

After the media fiasco about the PS3 doomsday (which only affected older models for like what 2 days?), I expect media outlets to release a statement that PS3s have fixed themselves.

JamMyth5928d ago (Edited 5928d ago )

Mr Logic@1.6

"6:00 PM EST is 0:00 GMT so it happened right as March 1(2) came."

Actually, 6:00 PM EST is 11:00 PM GMT, EST is GMT -5

I logged in at 5 minutes past midnight, GMT and all was well. Definitely "fixed" by date rollover

*EDIT* And I should add my son attempted to log in about 30 minutes before midnight GMT and he couldn't..so for me, problem was fixed at 7:00 PM EST

exnihilonihilfit5928d ago

There were already twenty articles that clearly explained how the problem got fixed. Do the writers at the guardian even do research?

So, first the problem is blown sky high and way out of proportion (my brother heard it on the news on the radio!!!), and now Sony are in the wrong because they haven't said how it was fixed

c'mon, this is getting silly now

evilmonkey5015928d ago

you could figure it out if you google some questions.

USEYOURFIST5929d ago

i will test later as i havent turned my ps3 on for 3 days due to being busy then this bug, so if i unplug net and turn it on it should in theory still be bugged right? unless they just let it roll over to fix wich seems likely but shouldnt mean sony is wrong for waiting to see if it would fix itself as they were probably 99% sure thats what would happen.

Socomer 19795929d ago

PSN is up & running. The ps3 fixed itself. We can now return to our systems care free. THanK You Sony.

Your Skills are immaculate.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle27d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga35d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199235d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga35d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman34d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

blacktiger35d ago

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box35d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion34d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7235d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7535d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit35d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14935d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7735d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
