CVG: From the demo we played last week, Team Ninja co-developed Metroid: Other M is definitely a culture shock for fans.
Start button pressed and the demo kicks off with the most gorgeous FMV sequence yet seen in a Nintendo game. It's pure Metroid fan porn: the visually stunning video details the final moments of Super Metroid, with our hero Samus Aran taking on the gigantic mother brain in a glorious fight to the death, leading to the destruction of the planet Zebes and the death of sole remaining Metroid.

With Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty coming soon, it's time to look back at the developer's greatest triumphs...and one oddball favorite.

Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime reflects on Metroid: Other M and his initial high hopes for the game.
Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."
Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.
"We would've much preferred a trade-off of 3D movement for full shooting controls - or even better, a nunchuck-Wii Remote pointer setup which would allow both 3D movement and full control of Samus's projectiles. Because at the moment walking into a room and thoughtlessly spamming the fire button until all enemies are dead just doesn't cut it."

That's what I've been thinking, too. But, to be fair, in the 2D Metroids, spamming the fire button (and especially the missiles) IS what was done. They act like targeting was a particularly exact science in previous Sakamoto-helmed Metroids. It wasn't (especially when you unlocked beam upgrades that widened the spray of the arm cannon's shots).
On the art style, I wouldn't put too much stock in the opening. Corruption was pretty bland at the very beginning, too.
