Civilization V: What We Know So Far

Civilization games have been long-known for their presentation, strategy, and addiction-inducing gameplay. Anyone who has played a Civilization game has said to themselves, "Just one more turn" 'til all hour of the night.

Firaxis and 2K Games have recently announced Civilization V will be released in Fall of 2010. Explicit Gamer has compiled a list of information (and rumors) known so far.

I've loved every Civ since Civilization 2 when I played it in middle school. I'm confident that the fundamental changes in the gameplay and design will make this one the best civ yet.

I too have bought, played, and mostly-loved every Civ game and expansion that has come out (I haven't loved Revolution or the latest Settlers as much, though...) Having said that, the combat system was starting to wear on me (especially the "surprise, I have a stack of 50 units next to your capital" mechanic), so I am quite interested in seeing how the changes play out. It could work great to work in some of the elements of classic hex-based war games - but it could also bring the game to a screeching crawl (to mix metaphors). Crossing my fingers...

Civ is good. Fun series. Will play 5.

This is one genre that simply does not translate well to the consoles... I tried Civilization Revolution, but it just wasn't the same.

I'd have to disagree. I thought it translated very well, for what they we're trying to accomplish. I had so much fun playing multiplayer. I do agree that singleplayer was extremely lacking. Ultimately Revolution wasn't the same, and it wasn't as great as any of the PC versions.

Yeah I think CIV:Rev was a good foundation for consoles but I was hoping they'd have an option to have it not so fast paced but strike a decent balance of the depth the PC versions have always had and the quick action time scale of CIV:Rev.

I know it's probably futile to hope for a CIV:Rev 2 on consoles but Civ5 looks so enticing on PC though.

Civ is the ulimate desert island disk I think. You can lose so much time to a single game and it's different every time you play it.

I could never get into the turn-based strategy games.
Age of Empires is better.

I know the shame. Not this game but I have about 5 different games with humiliating time in them.

sadraiden1221d ago (Edited 1221d ago )

It's about 4-5 hours a day, every day since launch.

Edits: bad math initially.

How ideas of civilisation have shaped gaming

Philip Boyes:
When I was a kid, I played a lot of Civilization 2. I played a lot of strategy games in general, but having a deep love of both history and sci-fi, the epic sweep of Civ 2 from prehistory to the stars held a particular appeal. I loved taking my little people from their huts and ziggurats to the world of science and advanced space-flight.
