IGN: Xbox 360, PS3 Get Unlimited Storage

For anyone wanting to transfer large files over a short distance without a local area network, having to do the USB stick shuffle is a huge pain. Load, unload, delete, repeat. Sure you could buy a higher capacity stick, but they're expensive and still have limitations. Infinitec is looking to bust through the memory barrier with its new USB streaming technology.

Rather than storing a handful of gigabytes on each stick, the Infinite USB Memory device (IUM) stores zero gigabytes. Instead, it creates an ad hoc wireless network between your laptop and whatever other USB enabled device you want to connect to. You can stream movies to your PS3 or Xbox 360, send images to your once non-wireless printer, or even transfer files between computers by making your whole hard-drive available on the network. Best of all, there are no drivers to install - aside from a one-time "pairing" process that installs the awesomely titled "Infinite Portal" onto your computer - and it works with all operating systems.

You are awfully late to the party. The PS3 Java Media Server has been doing this for a long time, encodes on the fly, even unpacks .rar files and encodes them on the fly. Video, audio, photos, and more all on the fly and 100% free. No pairing, multiple units, and again...it's free.

Hellsvacancy5939d ago

Ive been usin Tversity on my PS3 for months now (its free), this is old skool news

Darkeyes5939d ago

The best thing about that the servers is also the fact that you can wirelessly transefer the files onto the PS3 HD which is a boon for me as I hate putting the things on a USB from my PC, going to my PS3, unloading the thing and then deleting all the files from the PC and USB stick... This works like a charm.

Thats another feature that hasn't been talked about much. I don't think the 360 HDD can be used to put in movies and stuff can it? I have more than 200GB of videos on my PS3 HDD.

Bathyj5939d ago

Are you sure about that quotes source Sanzee?

SullyDrake5939d ago (Edited 5939d ago )

I might have to get one.

proximately5939d ago

It's not exactly the same thing :-/ . While the PS3 Java Media Server streams through either a wired or a wireless network (such as a router) this Ad-Hoc streaming doesn't require anything aside from another one of these sticks. I don't know how the codecs work with this though.

morganfell5939d ago (Edited 5939d ago )

The point is the java media server requires nothing extra except your computer, a hub, router, or switch, and your PS3. That's it. I have terrabytes of storage, internal and external, and stream anything I want. And as I said, the media server doesn't care if it is a .wmv, .avi, Divx, Xvid, .mp3, .flv, .ogg, .mkv, or a host of other codecs. It rips right through them and encodes them on the fly. No library, nothing. You can browse your PC or any attached storage from your X-Media bar.

@below, I think it might be your laptop. I have it on two computers at home (laptop and desktop) and we have it at work on a variety of Falcon Mach V machines as well as some Dell XPS units and there haven't been any issues.

hatchimatchi5939d ago

yea, i've been using tversity for a while now. It's pretty much the same thing as what this product does, except (like the guy above me said) it's free.

The java ps3 media server is nice but every time I use it I have to uninstall/reinstall. I don't know if it's the program itself or my laptop. It is a wonderful program though, only one I know of that encodes on the fly.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5939d ago

Morganfell, I notice you fail a lot in your comments. The route that you're endorsing isn't for the rest of the market that I assume Sony wants to tap. This is for the folks who rather have things available that doesn't require too much effort. And again I would like to state that this is for the market Sony would like to tap into...not you.

hatchimatchi5939d ago

?

What are you talking about?

Sony trying to tap into a new market? The usb dongle is being made by Infinitec, not sony. It's a 3rd party. Plus, the usb dongle route would require more work than that of using a media server. Getting a media server up and running is simple. Most have interfaces similar to that of itunes and windows media player. All you do is add the folders you want to be wirelessly streamed and the rest takes care of itself.

This usb route is a good product for those who don't have a wireless router, but anyone who does have wireless internet doesn't require this product. All it is, is a media server that sends out a wireless signal without the use of a router.

iFLOWLIKEWATER5939d ago (Edited 5939d ago )

Above...doesn't Sony have to OK such gadgets? And also, can your mother put a media server on a PS3? Don't answer that, I'm sure YOUR mother can...

hatchimatchi5939d ago (Edited 5939d ago )

You don't put a media server on a ps3, a media server is a program that runs through a computer and the ps3/360 acknowledges the program. You can't install a media server on a console, it has to recognize the server from the computer.

No, my mom doesn't know how to work a media server, nor does she care to learn how. Also, nice jab with the mom joke, that stuff was funny back in 1994.

This product isn't geared towards housewives, this thing is gonna be advertised on tech websites and tech magazines. Don't act like moms and grandmas have been clamoring for an infinite space solution for their ps3 or 360.

Does sony need to ok it? I doubt it, the ps3 has a usb slot. That doesn't mean that companies have to get sony's approval in order to have their product work....in a usb slot. I charge my psp and head set via my wii usb slots.

Please don't tell nintendo on me.

Another thing, What makes you think this usb setup would be any easier than a regular media server, not that either is overly difficult to do.

The setup would most likely be identical but with the usb setup you would most likely have to install a set of drivers so your computer would be able to send out the wireless signal. (that's how it was with a wireless usb router I used to have.)

PS360PCROCKS5939d ago

ouch. Sanzee next time you try to be funny don't fail so bad. Ricky Bobby? If you want Ricky Bobby you say something like "Dear 8 pounds 6 ounce baby Jesus, new born, not even spoken a word yet."

skip2mylou5939d ago

really iflow? you have to drop down to insult people?

this really seems like a nice idea except that i have been doing it via the ps3 java server

morganfell5938d ago

Don't worry guys, iflow and snesfangirl - who sent me a pm that was the most sophomoric, raging example of a failed eduction system ever are the same person.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5938d ago

This is super old news been doing this on the 360 for years.

morganfell5938d ago

One other cool note, you don't have to be sucked in to windows to use it as there is a version for Linux, Mac, and windows.

The Lazy One5938d ago

Does the Java Media Server stream all data or just media? They were saying that this can stream anything you'd put on a stick. Is it just like a PS3 version of WMC?

ThanatosDMC5938d ago

My PS3 was able to do this when i first got it.

M$ will wait as lemmings use this for a long time, and, when no one is expecting it, BAM, M$ will send out mass bannings for using the device to get people to buy yet another 360 to improve the 360's sales.

4point7BillionLoss5939d ago

Can't you just do the same thing already?
Is this simply a USB network instead of an ethernet/wireless network via ones router?

hatchimatchi5939d ago

yea.

this thing is pointless if you already have a wireless router.

All this thing does (i'm guessing), is create a wireless signal from your pc to the usb device and it acts as a media server without the need for a wireless router. Kinda like the wireless enabling usb devices 3rd parties make for the consoles & handhelds.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5938d ago

Yeah 4point7BillionLoss you can do this now

UnderpaidHonky5939d ago

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle35d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
