Adobe strikes back

Adobe has been fighting back against the stinging rebuff it has been receiving from Apple's Steve Jobs as the fruit-themed company has banned flash from its latest range of toys claiming that the popular content viewer breaks his operating system and is buggy and inefficient.

Flash is indeed notorious for gorging on computer resources, but as Adrian Ludwig, Adobe product manager, pointed out to biconews, plenty of mobile device manufacturers use it without gigantic losses in battery life or usability.

I'm going to take Adobe's side on this one. Apple is just being stubborn and/or lazy by not figuring out a way to make flash work. Especially with the iPad coming out, which is in some ways a substitute to a netbook. Without flash, you can't view 80% of things on the internet (an exaggeration, but you get the point.) I'm expecting thousands of stupid consumers to pick up an iPad only to angrily complain to Apple after realizing that half of the things they want to see won't display.

Darkfocus5972d ago (Edited 5972d ago )

"55% huh...

Just go on IGN.com or Xplay.com and see how much resources your computer uses. "

lol 4% on mine how old is your PC. let me guess still running windows 98 and the last time you updated was before planscape came out :P(his names the main characters name in Planescape:torment in case people are wondering)

Edit: the real reason that apple doesn't want flash is because 99% of the app store is just ports of flash games playable online for free

IdleLeeSiuLung5972d ago

Well, you buy an iPhone or iPad from Apple and yo are essentially tied into their closed platform. They control what you can use and it has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Perhaps, a different device in the future will fill this gap in! Oh, sweet competition!

Shadowstar5972d ago

I've been using a Flash blocker lately, to see if I'd notice it. Strangely, there are very few sites that I really care about that need Flash for the content. Your results might vary, of course, but other than Hulu (disabled on the PS3 last I heard, so it'd probably get disabled on an iPad anyways) and Adult Swim... I don't seem to be missing anything. I was actually a little surprised. Of course, I actually CAN click to see what the Flash content is, but still. You should try it, see how much of the web you want to interact with is Flash.

bobrea5972d ago

Darkfocus: I have a more than capable PC. You can defend Apple all you want, but I still think it's a totally retarded move on their part. Cool tip about my name, though. I had no idea =p.

"Perhaps, a different device in the future will fill this gap in! Oh, sweet competition!"

iPad competition = notion ink adam
ipod competition = htc desire/nexus one

Both of the items above will have complete flash support

Jobs didn't say anything that's not true. Flash is slow and clunky and is a CPU power eater. Most of the times your web browser freezes or crashes is due to adobe flash. Anyone who knows how to run Activity Monitor or Windows Task Manager can plainly see that even the most trivial use of flash within in a webpage eats up extraordinary resources.

gameforall5973d ago (Edited 5973d ago )

I don't know what computer you are using, but I have had a flash trailer playing whilst having the Twit Live desktop (flash) app running at the same time and it has not gone over 55%

Edit
Just did a test and it was between 28% and 45%

It also depends what version of flash you are running
Latest beta is 10.1

The_Nameless_One5973d ago (Edited 5973d ago )

55% huh...

Just go on IGN.com or Xplay.com and see how much resources your computer uses.

PietroDimeglio5972d ago

Its true. Adobe have been very lazy trying to support Apple's devices.

STK0265972d ago

True or not, the fact is that the iPad, the so-called best way of experiencing the web, will not be supporting Flash. I know most agree that HTML5 is better, but Flash is much more prevalent. And while Flash has its problems, with CPU usage, memory usage and the likes, it still runs on a variety of phones, most notably some HTC ones. I just can't see Jobs explaining how an HTC phone has flash support, while the iPad, a considerably more powerful device, aimed at the netbook crowd, doesn't.

IdleLeeSiuLung5972d ago

even when you don't use their software!!!

With that said, I prefer to have an option to decide if I want Flash or not on my iPhone. Lucky for me, I don't own an iPhone and just bought a Nokia 5800 while waiting for the new Zune/Windows Phone 7 phones!!!

Nokia 5800 rocks by the way and don't force me to pay a $30/monthly for a data plan!

flash hasn't been a problem for me in a long time
Steve Jobs just doesn't want something on his products that he can't control and moderate

d10sfan5972d ago (Edited 5972d ago )

Try playing some videos through hulu and youtube for a while. After a while, even when those windows are closed, Firefox starts using 500mb to 1gb of memory. Thats not a problem with the browser, thats an issue with flash not being able to close itself properly.

Plus, video playing can be done much better than flash. HTML5 for instance seems like a viable alternative. Plus, sites that are made entirely in flash, to me are idiotic. It loads slowly, hard to navigate to specific pages normally, and too loud.

wpggamer5972d ago

because steve jobs controls html5, and makes money off of it.

Oh, and Adobe doesn't make money when people use flash. They are just in it for our enjoyment. Dreamweaver anyone?

And his statements about javascript, etc being blocked? Hmm, the device isn't out yet. And he's probably not on the preview list.

Apple haters are just rabid. If they want flash to continue, they better make it free, and run well, cause the writing is on the wall. Just look at youtube in html5. Works great, looks great, hmm, no flash.

DailyAddict5972d ago

For all those iPhone fans waiting for a Flash update to the iPhone I think all of the bickering from Steve Jobs just sort of put those dreams to rest because he obviously isn't interested in Flash for his products and I'm more inclined to side with Adobe that while Apple is using the excuse of performance as their reason it has more to do with Apple losing money when people realize they are paying for stuff on iTunes that's essentially free elsewhere. Other high end smartphones utilize flash and you don't hear their users complaining so performance obviously isn't the problem.

Everyone already knows that Steve Jobs is essentially Nazi when it comes to control and money so his responses to the public are just that - they are PUBLIC responses so that you don't hate him for basically saying "if I can't profit from it I'm not going to support it".

I was about to upgrade to an iphone, but went for a N900 instead.

Probably down to the high cost of gaming. Controllers and racing wheels can cost as much as consoles.

This is why there will always be competition in gaming. The possibilities to make huge profits is just too enticing.

Pokémon Go Championship Winner Title Revoked for ‘Unsportsmanlike Conduct’

The winner of the Pokémon Go Championship grand finals in Orlando was stripped of their title, allegedly for 'unsportsmanlike conduct' during their victory celebration. The celebration involved the winner removing their headset, standing up, and pumping their fists before shaking hands with their opponent. Many believe the ruling was excessive and that winner's victory celebration was tame compared to celebrations by winners in other competitive games.

There are people that get offended seeing others just enjoying a moment, or enjoying a hobby, or just having fun.

SethNW86d ago

Can someone explain to me what is so problematic with this? I watched video multiple times and all I see dude having bit of celebration. None of his actions felt aggressive or seem like they symbolize anything... Like winning sure deserves bit of celebration like that. I mean who wants to live in the world where you aren't allowed to be excited or have bit of burst of happiness when you win? Like was he supposed to act like emotionless robot? He should be allowed to have bit of his victory "hell yeah" moment, even if it is before shaking hands with opponent. Like it is not like he didn't shake hands or whatnot. And it is not like he is like some super serious government official to have to stick to protocol to a letter. This whole thing is just ridiculous.
