IGN | Super Mario Galaxy 2 Hands-on

IGN says: "It's here in San Francisco and fully playable. And play we did at Nintendo's Media Summit."

pcz5933d ago

''In this context, it really felt like Super Mario Galaxy 2 is just more of the same: more challenges in the same established Super Mario Galaxy engine. Apart from the new gameplay mechanics, if you were walking past the systems at the Media Summit you'd probably think that Nintendo was showing off the original 2007 release.''

Precisely what i said in the other thread (and got disagrees for,) only a blind fan-boy would think anything new is happening in this game. Its a bit lame.

eagle215933d ago

Super Mario Galaxy is in my top 10 games of all time. Who cares about the sequel being more of the established gameplay, because I never wanted Galaxy to end anyway. Can't wait! :)

EvilTwin5933d ago

OK, then every sequel that doesn't completely reinvent a series is "lame," in your book. That's just foolish.

SMG2 looks like Galaxy, but kicked up a notch. That's a GOOD thing.

When something is already phenomenal, how much should it be changed beyond a few functional improvements? In fact, how much CAN it be changed without taking away from the greatness that is already there? Mario Galaxy has a Metacritic rating of 97. NINETY-FREAKIN'-SEVEN! Higher than Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, Uncharted 2, The Orange Box, Half Life 2, Goldeneye, Resident Evil 4 and countless other instant classics.

Why? Because Mario Galaxy was a phenomenal game. The sequel, therefore, wisely seeks to make a few improvements without trying to alter what is already PROVEN to be one of the best gaming formulas around. Don't believe me? NINETY-FREAKIN-SEVEN.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. We all are. I just wonder what it will take to ever actually satisfy some gamers.

Sharpshell5932d ago

"But you know what? That's not really a bad thing. Super Mario Galaxy is still the best damn game on the Nintendo Wii, so to get more of the best damn Wii game is still a wonderful thing indeed"

Although I must admit that in a way your right, its far from "lame"

Honestly, despite the fact that it didn't really live up to Super Mario 64 which was one of the bet games ever made IMO, its still a phenomenal game and probably the most pure fun I have had on the Wii, let me think... yep definitely most fun ( i have yet to play new super Mario bros wii)

As long as the game has extensive content, its worth far more than the price of admission for me

p.s. yoshi is teh awesome

pcz5932d ago

''When something is already phenomenal, how much should it be changed beyond a few functional improvements? In fact, how much CAN it be changed without taking away from the greatness that is already there? ''

Mario 64 once was (and still is) phenomenal, it would be hard to imagine that another Mario game could improve upon it, but Galaxy did (in design at least.) Galaxy is a massive leap forward when compared to 'perfect' Mario 64. So it is not unreasonable to expect greater things than Galaxy in the future.

They already used the Galaxy template, its tried and tested, it works. We all know it works, so what is the point in using the template again? Wouldn't it be better for all of us to have a variation, rather than 'the same again.'

I might find this conveyorbelt attitude towards making a game acceptable for football games or fighting games, but adventure games? No. Its taking the adventure out of it and destroying creativity along the way.

''yoshi is teh awesome''

Did you play Mario Sunshine? Yoshi was a pain, a hinderance. I hope they at least make him maneuverable this time.

Zackstorm5932d ago (Edited 5932d ago )

Dude, Mario is not an adventure game. It's a platformer.

A sequel to a platformer should have new gameplay elements(Yoshi looks sweeeeet), an increased challenge (reports say this game is even more challenging than the first), and most importantly a sequel to a platformer should have brand-new levels, and SMG2 not only has brand-new levels, but they look kick-ass.

Galaxy is a huge jump compared to Mario 64. But man, it took 11 years after Mario 64 to realize that kind of revolution. Good things take time. This time, I suppose a sequel to the highest rated exclusive this generation is just going to have to due. Now pipe down and enjoy it.

pcz5932d ago (Edited 5932d ago )

''Dude, Mario is not an adventure game. It's a platformer.''

Uh dude, it is an adventure game, no need to be pedantic.

I played a bit of Mario 64 yesterday and it is actually magical, timeless. If Nintendo had capitalised on Mario 64's success and decided to Make Mario 64 2 on the N64, i don't think it would have had the same affect. It would have taken away from the brilliance of the original.

Zelda: Majora's Mask is an exception, because although they re-used the engine of Ocarina, they created something so vastly different that it could be seen as a different game. The same cannot be said for Mario Galaxy 2.

They had the oppertunity to take Mario to a completely new galaxy (or even universe) with this game, but from what has been shown it looks basically identical to the first. Just think of all the alien places they could have taken mario to for this sequal, but instead he's in an identical looking galaxy presumably right next-door to the last game. Missed oppertunity.

Zackstorm5931d ago

Do you think ideas for a brand new type of Mario are not already being thought up?

There will be another generation of Mario that will probably find some way of being amazing that no one had thought of. There's no missed opportunity here.

In fact, this is an opportunity seized. If a game receives critical acclaim, everyone loves it and you have the chance to give them a solid sequel, then why not?

It would not have been possible for them to bust out something revolutionary so fast. You have ridiculous expectations. See the game for what it is: a sequel to one of the best games this generation.

Be thankful there's more solid software coming out for Wii. God knows it could use some more great titles like Galaxy. Geez, gamers these days. I've never before heard of gamers being upset over good games being released before

if you disagree, cool, it doesn't really matter.

I will buy the game anyway, but at least i will know i have an honest opinion about it- ei not carrying on like i haven't seen anything like it before.

Mario Galaxy 2.. ok, nice.

thief5932d ago

Funny thing about Halo, GTA, Super Matrio - all the usual criteria are tossed out of the window
Poor graphics? Weak or non-existent story? Nothing original beyond the original game? no worries , here is your 10/10, because it is so "phenomenal".
Whereas games like Ratchet and Clank Crack in time, made on a fraction of the budget, with better graphics, a more engaging story and characters, and new gameplay mechanics to add to already superb gameplay, gets nitpicked to death.

Gr815932d ago

Fraction of the Budget? Sure boy, an HD game costs less than an SD game. That's news to me.

And second, Sorry to rain on your parade but Galaxy was head and shoulders above R&C. Sales don't Lie. Galaxy is closing in on 9m while R&C is where?

Sorry but if you feel that way why not stick to a PS3 section where others share your rather minority view point of Ratchet being superior to Galaxy.

thief5932d ago

"Galaxy was head and shoulders above R&C. Sales don't Lie. Galaxy is closing in on 9m while R&C is where? "
So Mario Kart is better than the next 4 racing games combined, and In really hope you have stocked up on those all time greats, wii fit and pokemon.
"Fraction of the Budget? Sure boy, an HD game costs less than an SD game."
Well my point exactly. You may argue about better gameplay in Galaxy, but why do you have a game like ratchet or infamous scored say 8 or 9 for graphics or story when galaxy is not even HD, has no attempt at a story, yet gets 97 on metacritic?

SpoonyRedMage5932d ago

@^ EXHIBIT A: Someone who obviously hasn't played Super Mario Galaxy.

Gr815932d ago

Yes, because graphics make a game and if a game isn't in HD my god its just lame! Look at all those lame games last gen and the gen before that, and the gen before even that one!

And for the record, yes MK is the best racing game this gen. When this gen is looked back upon years from now games like that, along with NSMB and Wii Sports will be the ones spoken of. not Uncharted 2 or Ratchet..Hell ppl don't talk about ratchet now, LoL.

@Spoony: LoL, definitely hasnt touched Galaxy and probably only seen youtube Vids of it.

Immortal Kaim5932d ago

You definitely haven't played SMG have you. Ratchet and Clank is pretty competent as a platformer (amongst other genres as well), but in all honesty it just doesn't stack up to the brilliance of Super Mario Galaxy, SMG has to be played to be believed, it's that good.

SMG2 is going to be awesome btw :)

I would not dare to say that Mario Galaxy is on my top 10 best games of all time but I would put it on my list for this generation's best games for sure.

It can be more of the same but it will still be better for me then new Mario Bros.Wii.I preffer 3D mario>2D unless it is an RPG.

Everything about the way this game was developed is screaming out that the price point is way off the mark!

This just looks like Nintendo, really scraping the barrel and rubbing in their fans faces. It's just dirty at this point!

Super Mario Odyssey Turns Seven - Ranking the 3D Mario Games

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "With the Switch getting on in years and the prospect of a new Nintendo console growing closer, now seems like an excellent time to take a look back at one of its mascot’s two big evolutionary lines, particularly since we now find ourselves in the longest wait ever between 3D Mario games. Today marks the seven year anniversary for the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and with no full new entry in sight, it comfortably beats the roughly six year wait between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which should also be good news to anybody who broke a mirror that day.

3D Mario has delighted fans since 1996, maintaining an astonishing level of quality and bringing innovations not just to the 3D platformer genre, but gaming as a whole. Needless to say, it’s a hard task to rank a series where every entry is beloved, but I shall nevertheless undertake this risky venture with my head held high. Wish me luck."

One of the worst marios.. i hated the fact it was only about finding the moons and very repetitive with the same bosses. There is no exploration in this one.
Galaxy 2 is still unmatched

TiredGamer573d ago

I played, completed, and enjoyed Mario Odyssey, but I tend to agree that I don't think it's the best 3D Mario. There was sense of sameness that prevailed after the first couple of worlds... not in the levels, environments, or aesthetics, but in the routine of each world. It just felt like each new environment was just the beginning of another checklist of moons to acquire, and the sheer number of them took away the sense of accomplishment I got from the stars in Mario 64 and the like. I can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Galaxy gets my nod as the best one.

Cacabunga573d ago

I enjoyed it too but i won’t even place it in my top10 mario games.. as you said you are just looking for stars and that irritating music everytime you find one.
Also the bosses are pretty much the same from begging to end. I would have have like some koopalings instead of these dumb useless rabbits

Chocoburger574d ago

I played a little of this game and freakin' LOVED it! But I forced myself to stop because I hadn't played Galaxy 2, which I've been playing every day for the past week. Cripes, Galaxy 2 is way better than I expected it to be! Even though I dislike the Wiimote and nunchuck controls, and it annoyed me a lot with Galaxy 1, part 2 just feels better and slightly less gimmicky when it comes to the controls.

Profchaos573d ago

Sunshine at number 7 no way. I get it's not perfect but it deserves better to date there has not been another 3d Mario that's managed to capture that same movement it's the most acrobatic feeling Mario to date.

It's by and large better than 3d land/world and I'd argue that galaxy 2 didn't offer any trie innovation it was essentially a DLC pack to 1

Personally it's
1) Mario 64
2) Mario Sunshine
3) Mario galaxy
4) Mario Odyssey
5) galaxy 2
6) Bowser fury
7) 3d land/ world.
