Xbox Live shutdown

From Strategyinformer.com: "It was only a few weeks ago that Major Nelson informed the Xbox community that as of April 15th the original Xbox LIVE, the one that started it all would finally be put to rest beside its console counterpart. But what exactly was the motivation for this decision and what repercussions will this have on the future of Xbox LIVE and the LIVE community?"

Holy crap. How are they gonna shut down a service I pay for? WTF?

Cold 20005942d ago

Relax man, They're talking about live for the Xbox not the 360.

BeaArthur5942d ago

As long as you have a 360 you can still play. Still pretty crappy though, there are a lot of original Xbox users that are getting the shaft.

TomDaSpartan5942d ago

I know a lot of die-hard Star Wars Battlefront guys that are going to be sorely hurt when they find out the game they still play everyday online will no longer be available come April 15th.

IdleLeeSiuLung5942d ago

Keeping backwards compatibility has always and will always hamper progression. That is how it has been for almost as long as computer programming has been around.

I'm surprised, it was kept up and running for that long.

champ215941d ago (Edited 5941d ago )

what is service shutdown???

oh wait we are talking about consoles lol.

@Idlelee

i still play warcraft3 and many other oldies at times, id hate it if i was told i can no longer play them online or that perhaps i need to pay for them again on the latest system just so i can play again.

IdleLeeSiuLung5941d ago

I understand there will be people that play these old games, but the majority has moved on. I'm also sure there are some people out there still using VHS tapes as well. Let's not let the few ruin it for the many.

I agree that it sucks that you have to pay again, but that is just how it works. You don't have to buy it if you don't want too.

It sounds like you are more like a PC gamer and thus are used to free onilne gaming, dedicated servers and support that seemingly last forever.

Unfortunately, the console world isn't like that... however, it seems the PC gaming world is quickly changing as both Assassin's Creed 2 and Command and Conquer 4 will require always on internet connection for verification. That is some serious Draconian DRM. Oddly enough, consoles are the only one you are likely to play at home.

Most of the games released don't have dedicated server or LAN support anymore.

AAACE55941d ago

If you are going to pay for XBL you might as well own a 360. It has more features than the old xbox. Most of those games can be played on the 360 anyway so all you need is the system and you're good to go.

Whoever said their buddies have old xboxes and still play them... I don't believe you! Any console with movable parts in them (CD, DVD and Blu-ray drives) are bound to break from use. The eye's of these things are only good for a certain amount of time. So your buddy must not play that much, because I don't think a console will still function properly after nearly 9 years... unless it's an N64 or some other cartridge based console without movable parts.

If you play them alot, it's lifespan is diminished. These disc based consoles are like cars, the more you use it, the worse it will get. Leave it alone, it stays in good condition.

IdleLeeSiuLung5941d ago

Yeah, I agree. I almost bought an Original Xbox brand new and sealed from ebay for around $100 a few years ago. Now, I can't find one on Ebay and certainly not below $200.

I'm actually glad there is some backwards compatibility. Wish it was 100% though.

This is common for them. In 2015 you'll see similar happen with Xbox 360 services and they roll them over to their new console that's out at that time unless they're tied together. Regardless, they'll find something to turn off due to their 10 year policy that will force you to upgrade and keep them from lingering on old technology.

This is the same thing that happened with ASP VBScript when the .NET framework came along. It can still be used, but it is no longer supported (and tons of hackers love that, btw) and you are highly encouraged to move on to the .NET 2.0 or 3.5 framework.

dabri55942d ago

The original Xbox live was tied in with each game. They all had different interfaces and so forth. The new live is dynamic and isn't hard coded into any game and thus can be changed and updated all you want. Part of why they are shutting down the old live service is so they can update the standards for current live. For instance, upping the amount of friends you can have in your friends list.

dabri55942d ago

What this means is hopefully they won't ever have to do this again since they can simply update live to meet new standards without it effecting older games.

Christopher5942d ago

Agreed catguykyou, unfortunately Microsoft's history paints a picture that says otherwise.

The .NET framework is an excellent example considering you could install the .NET framework capable applications on older OSes, but you could not install non-.NET framework MS Office applications on new .NET framework OSes.

This infuriated tons of Office 2003 users who upgraded to Vista to no end, and that was only a 3.5 year difference in their purchase, not 10.

Hopefully Microsoft doesn't mess it up with XBLA when they bring out their next console as well.

Christopher5941d ago

For those phantom disagrees... would you like to prove me wrong?

Let me prove more of my point. From: http://support.microsoft.co...

"Microsoft will offer a minimum of 10 years of support for Business and Developer products."

The Xbox and the Xbox 360 are developer products. The final Xbox was released 10 years ago to development studios worldwide.

This isn't an anti-Microsoft post, it's a fact presenting post. You may disagree with Microsoft's policy, which has been the continual policy of 10 years support so far because they've always had a new product to follow up with it, but you really can't disagree with a post that provides the facts. Well, you can, but in all honesty you're just being a misguided fanboy who proves that the N4G system just doesn't work towards building a community that actually discusses games and technology and instead randomly clicks links.

RH065941d ago (Edited 5941d ago )

Yea sure, I would like to believe that but when the 360 came out MS dopped the original Xbox in the Lake! Sony still supports the PS2 for gods sake, and the PS2 while beating the Xbox was still inferior to MS's design.(Atleast harware wise and not space wise)

Edit: No phantom disagree here, but like I said the Xbox was discontinued in late 2006, although the final Xbox game (Madden NFL 09) was released in August 2008.

Christopher5941d ago

Completely agree with you on how Microsoft didn't drop supporting Xbox issues (service, warranty, repairs, connections, etc.), but they sure did stop supporting any games for it as soon as the 360 was released.

RH065941d ago

I don't understand that move, they could have been making(not a lot but some) more money off the xbox. I think it was just to get Devs to stop the "Last" Gen and work on the next gen...(which is now) Either way R.I.P XBOX Live!(for the Original)

Karum5942d ago

If this indeed allows them to push on with the LIVE service and have it capable of things now that the old hardware and software isn't holding them back.

Maybe we'll hear some news at E3.

Akagi5942d ago

Way to bite the hand that feeds, M$.

Smooth move.

Gamer7l5942d ago

...the "hand that feeds" MS, is the MUUUUUUCH larger collective hand of the 360 community. Get your head out of your butt.

Blaster_Master5942d ago

Yeah but Phantasy Star Online was dope. There should be some exceptions.

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
