RandomNPC: Mass Effect 2 (PC) Review

RandomNPC writes: "Make no mistake, Mass Effect 2 is an ideal sequel, and it gets within shouting distance of perfection at times. Bioware was listening, and they went well out of their way to improve the game. Not all the changes may sit right with some players, but short of people who flat-out don't like action games or space epics, there are very few people this won't appeal to in some way. It's clever, it's deep, it has charm to spare, and it's one of the most fun action-RPGs to date. Don't miss this one."

good story, great universe, plays like a broken gears game. 9/10 really?

Selma_Blair5852d ago

A broken Gears game? While I'll admit the cover and running system need work it's hardly broken.

Yeah that was the disappointing thing for me too - they dropped the RPG elements so much, this is more akin to a TPS - and in the TPS genre there's lots of competition and much of it is better as a TPS than this :/

Don't see why it was necessary to do that though - Bioware are well known for their RPGs and Dragon Age showed they've still got the "touch", but this was a missed opportunity to elevate the ME series. In fact I get the feeling that Bioware see Dragon Age as their "proper" release of these last few months while ME2 is there to pay the bills so they didn't do any more than the minimum work to get it released.

From a promising start with ME, ME2 lives in the shadow of other TPSs in my memory now... I'd like to think ME3 will go back to the RPG core, but that looks highly unlikely.

r.

"RPG Elements" What are RPG elements? Since when does "Role playing game" mean that it has to have loads of skills and levels to grind up and loot to collect? You're playing the role of a character to detail not explored in other genres, that is the definition of a role playing game.

As for the gameplay, i think the cover controls need a little tweaking, but it didn't take away from the fantastic experience, i'd hardly call it a broken gears game, especially if you play with a character with biotic and tech powers, because i enjoyed the gameplay more than gears.

Ain't it a little late for a review like this?

Selma_Blair5852d ago

Reviews still pop up for games that released like 3 years ago.

It crushes the first game in every possible way, seriously as someone who found the first Mass Effect pretty average I really truthfully loved this game.

Okay, I was being sarcastic about it being broken, but it sure as hell isn't smooth enough to justify this game a 9.5. Especially with the replay value doesn't even justify as a day one purchase,, Sure I bought it cause I had money to blow, but unlike most of you, I only give credit where its due, This game is a good 8.5 outa 10 simply because the lack of multiplayer, and crap cover system. Even Dark Void did it better. The story isn't even that good, its just the way the story unfolds and the choices you make affects the game in good ways, sorta like a choose your own adventure books back in the day. Seriously though guys, quit hyping this game, its not all that.

Mass Effect 2 justified my day one purchase, its an amazing game dripping with quality, sorry you can't see it. No multiplayer? and crap cover system? Its a bioware game get a clue, Hmmm I wonder if FFXIII will have multiplayer durrrrrr... Single-player driven games are great, Mass Effect 2 has no need for a multiplayer component. The cover system is fine and it works fine. Seriously, this game doesn't need to be 'hyped', it stands upright on its own and is worthy of all the praise it has received. Now, go and play Dark Void lol

anast446d ago

Legion, Zaeed, and Jack are my favorites.

RiseNShine446d ago

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast446d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman446d ago

some in andromeda are decent, I agree with peebee and Vetra being good companions. Except Liam he's trash tier

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave694d ago (Edited 694d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
