Why Master Chief is so interesting

GamePro: GamePro's reviews editor Tae K. Kim discusses why he believes it's so important to keep the mystery that surrounds Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 intact, and explains why knowing too much about the iconic Halo hero could tarnish his image.

I tell you whenever he used to bring the gas mask to our sessions he would have a mask underneath his mask.

Master Chief is definitely one of the best video game characters out there, on par with Mario and Sonic

Microsoft, Nintendo and Sega sure do have AMAZING characters

LtSkittles5954d ago

You mean Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, and Sega? I mean yeah Sonic is what Mario is to Nintendo, but Nathan Drake, Snake, and Sackboy are popular too, Snake being the most popular, I mean Solid Snake has been on all PlayStation platforms, Masterchief is popular too.

MisterNiwa5954d ago

I like Master Chief because he looks like a Power Ranger fighting Aliens with Pew-Pew Weapons.

Major_Tom5954d ago

yeah he's like a not-cool version of power rangers

SilentNegotiator5954d ago

Master Chief isn't even slightly interesting. You could replace him with a banana.

That being said, he just happens to be lucky enough to be in a fun game.

BldyShdw5954d ago

never played 1 or 2 (never had an original xbox) but i bought 3 day one. wasnt overly impressed with master chief In fact, I really didnt care for the story at all. Multiplayer wasnt bad but oh well. Then i sold it

ZombieNinjaPanda5954d ago

I hate masterchief. I find all of the other Spartans so much more interesting. That's what contributes to my excitement about Halo Reach.

The fact that your characters will actually have personality.

ryuzu5954d ago

Interesting? Well that's a term I wouldn't have used.

After Halo on xbox 1 I thought Bungie just ran out of budget or ideas and stuck in a lead character who was cliched and, well bland - I didn't know (or think) there would be more Halo games to follow at that point. It seemed like they wanted to use a Marine from the Aliens film, but didn't want to find a face or personality so just stuck a helmet on it and left the character silent.

I don't really see how 2.5 games later that has changed in any significant way. Even the name Master Chief is stupid - like a parody of a video game character name.

That's not to say other characters in games are much better, but this particular one is perhaps the blandest of all the "big names" out there.

r.

Parapraxis5954d ago

Wait...Master Chief is interesting?

Perjoss5954d ago

Most people don't get Master Chief, he's supposed to be almost like Gordon Freeman, He speaks with no emotion and we never see his face because he's supposed to be the gamer.

Darkstorn5954d ago

The Halo series makes for enjoyable games, but Master Chief is by no means an interesting character. I prefer attitude, motivation, and/or philosophical interpretation of events as characteristics of my favorite game characters.

ThanatosDMC5954d ago (Edited 5954d ago )

Yeah, most of you, including myself, watched that way back when...

Anyway, Master Chief = Gordon Freeman = absolutely no personality

Naked Snake >>> Solid Snake >>> Nathan Hale > Sev

The story of Big Boss is more epic than Solid Snake. Everything in Metal Gear Universe revolves around him.

Sarcasm5954d ago

Master Chief interesting??? I didn't know characters with zero emotions is interesting.

Heck, an interesting character would have to go to the Illusive Man from Mass Effect 2.

Actually, he's the most uninteresting video game character I've ever seen... To be perfectly honest. As a matter of fact, this D*ck Twist

http://ps2media.ign.com/ps2...

From Haven is more interesting than Master Moron. Lame as character...

Gigalol5954d ago

NateNater5954d ago

Hahahahahaha you are sooooooo wrong man. I hope you're being sarcastic.

Major_Tom5954d ago

A Cupcake for Gabe5954d ago

All those hours of substandard 640p fuzzy graphics have distored their perception of reality.

RockmanII75954d ago

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

DarXyde49d ago

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

Soy50d ago

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
