Sonic 4, 2D is Cool Yet Again

In the early 1990s, the Sonic the Hedgehog series was such a force that it propelled Sega to a level of prominence that it had not even dreamt of and unfortunately still tries to return to today. The much maligned Sega has redeemed itself lately by publishing titles such as Bayonetta and others but the Sonic franchise is trying to polish its tarnished name which has degraded slowly over time.

Ha, i remember the ROM for the Sonic 4 beta back in the day that was like Knuckles Chaotix. I'm looking foward to this but the 'episode 1' scares me.

Ziriux5931d ago

I do not mind getting my sonic in episodes, all it means is that I'll be getting some constant 2D old school sonic the way I use to love it.

multipayer5931d ago

I still remember the hundred sidescrolling sonics released after genesis, so this "rebirth" isn't working on me... espeacially with the "episodes" title.

Whitefox7895931d ago

They've already done it before they did it with Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and Sonic and Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was episode 1 in that story arch while Sonic and Knuckles was episode 2 in the story arch for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Point being if you wanted the most out of either one of the games you needed both of them. Especially playing through Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and through Sonic and Knuckles to find out there is a bonus level where Sonic is Supersonic in space taking down Robotniks giant Robot.

"I still remember the hundred sidescrolling sonics released after genesis"

Then name one. Besides sega cd, gamegear games which were good.
Not sure why everyone's upset with the episodes its just them saying they are expecting to make sequels, i'm sure they will give us good value not just take sonic 2's 11 zones and chop it into 4 parts.

multipayer5930d ago

I could accept your sugar coated lies, but we all know sonic has been a whore and DLC is ideal for cash grabbing. I can't imagine this being any better than the last one released on psp or ds. Most of you obviously havn't played the huge back catelog of attempted revivals, Sonic Advance 1-3 are my favorite. I suggest at least playing them first or if you're going to be a baby about those games being handheld...

Is Sega back in the game with the big boys?

Ziriux5931d ago

Qface:

You're right, Bayonetta was only the one game in the few years that made a lot of headlines.

qface645931d ago (Edited 5931d ago )

yeah i know and even that game wasn't made by sega just published
can't think of any sega developed game that has been real big recently

now that i think about it what has sega been up to lately? not much comes to mind

young juice5931d ago

sega is publishing the new aliens vs predator game.

JohnTheBaptist5931d ago

Sega published Condemned as well I think.

If Sonic returns to 2-d Im all for it. 2-D is back, and Braid showed us that

Ziriux5931d ago

Indeed, and honestly the best way Sonic plays and looks is in 2D, you can't change something that was happening for years into 3rd and expect the hardcore fans of the franchise to like it.

Handhelds and PSN/XBLA games have proven these games can stand up with the bigger console brethren. With plenty of loved IP's, I'd love to see more developers revisit/update classic franchises.

I would especially love if Sega brought back these for the 20teens.

Altered Beast
Shinobi
Alien Storm
Streets of Rage

Sonic 2D will no doubt be the great old Sonic game that we all knew from childhood. However can the franchise bounce back to success after the horrid 3d versions?

Cronus31665931d ago

I was never a huge fan of the Sonic series. Mainly because I never owned anything Sega till they had the Dreamcast. Although there are plenty of people out there that enjoy it so hopefully it can be as strong as they're hoping it can.

Sonic’s Episodic Adventures – The History of Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 was something many wanted to see for a very long time. Continuing the story from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, many had lofty expectations for this title. When it finally released, many were split on the project. From it’s episodic nature, different feeling controls and changes that felt strange to fans of Sonic’s classic adventures, Sonic 4 Episode I and II were divisive games to say the least.

Articuno763409d ago

I feel like if they could keep improving on the Sonic 4 physics, formula and level design they could have gone from the good Sonic 4 Ep II to something genuinely great for Sonic 4 Ep III.

Strange games. Definitely shouldn't have been "Sonic 4". Seeing as it re-used alot of ideas, level themes enemies and bosses etc, it really should have been called "Sonic Megamix" or something and the levels should have been named after the originals. This would have given SEGA a chance to see what fans reaction was to this style of game, before going in for "proper" Sonic 4. Sonic Mania feels far more "Sonic 4" than the actual Sonic 4 does haha
