Why the Army Doesn't Train on Xboxes

Right now, every military command post and every training center is packed with PCs. In the future, many of those machines might be replaced with game consoles - if the armed forces can ever work out their disagreements with the console-makers.

tocrazed4you5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Come on microsoft you are a billion dollar company and can't even support the troops with your xboxes? That's just fail, but the most fail point is that the ARMY WANTS TO BUY THEM not ask to get them for free.

Hellsvacancy5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

The equipment they provide Army is mostly faulty anyway, cant c y they would want 2 add 2-them numbers if u ask me

deadreckoning6665920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

OMG, another flamewar. 360 haters are gunna refer back to this article for the rest of the year :/

"There's so many reasons people around the world despise MS. We'd be better off without them here to ruin gaming."

Yeah, to bad the world is too busy playing Wii fit and Modern Warfare 2 to care about this. Cry me a river. Btw, Saaking how many PS3s has Sony sold to the army???

Saaking5920d ago

There's so many reasons people around the world despise MS. We'd be better off without them here to ruin gaming.

Darkstorn5920d ago

It would be a nice gesture for MS to give the troops Xboxes, but it's not going to happen. I don't think Microsoft is willing to invest much in public relations...

UnwanteDreamz5920d ago

1.The Army wants to buy them. ( for those who didn't read the article before commenting.)

2. Sony already sold the Navy 2000 PS3s. ( for those who don't do research befor commenting)

darkmurder5920d ago

Ok first of all its from an article originally on why the army don't train on Xboxes.
Secondly he approached them in 2006!
Thirdly, its hardly as bad, Microsoft wasn't just giving them away they were approached to buy them by the US Army. Microsoft didn't want to be affiliated with the negativity of the US Army eg civilian killings and relating it back to their product.

Some of you guys need to read the articles and before you all bash MS note they have done a lot for the US Army and charities (anyone recall Bill Gates dedicating 10 billion to his charity?) Microsoft have done more for the US Army than Sony, Nintendo or most gaming companies.

DSI5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

And for those trying to boast a story with a link, they should at least read their link before making a bold comment.

It was the AF that bought the PS3s not the Navy.

For those who want to make comments without doing research.

edit: Additionally, companies do stuff like this all the time. This is no different from and company dropping an athlete because of bad publicity. They don't want to be affiliated.

Lastly, let's not get video games and politics mix. There is nothing more damning than politics. (Ask the guy getting paid more than you because his plays golf with the boss...lol)

Comet5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

watch the truth

UnwanteDreamz5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

No one has done more for the Army than the American taxpayer. Why should gamers care if console makers sell to the military? Why is this news?

EDIT: Yes yes DSI how carless of me to say Navy instead of Airforce. I won't edit it out I know people like you get very few joys in life. I'lll leave that one there for you bud.

Back in 2006, barely a year after the 360 launched:

* Microsoft was afraid that the military would buy up lots of Xbox 360s, but would buy only one game for each of them, so MS wouldn’t make much money off of the games.
* A big military purchase could create a shortage of Xbox 360s.
* If the Xbox became an Army training device, it could taint its reputation. Microsoft was concerned that “do we want the Xbox 360 to be seen as having the flavor of a weapon? Do we want Mom and Dad knowing that their kid is buying the same game console as the military trains the SEALs and Rangers on?” Smith told me during an interview for Training & Simulation Journal.

------

I see nothing wrong with those points and the refusal becuase of.

I despise M$ just for The Reiterative use of updated versions of NT OS + The error 8007ffff and how they can make lot of cr@ppy stuff and when this things just don't go anywhere, there's No problem cuz windows profits will recoup all the money lost, I mean what a waste of Money and Time...

Edit:

I don't know where the "debate" will end, but I don't see anything bad about MS selling/Not Selling consoles to the US Army, since Sony already did I think, so what's the deal...

randomwiz5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

"Btw, Saaking how many PS3s has Sony sold to the army???"
in fact,
http://www.google.com/searc...

but i don't see how microsoft refusing is a big deal... its just doesn't make economical sense to do this.

Elven65920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Microsoft and even Sony for that matter do donate consoles to the military for recreation purposes. What the army was asking for here was to use them for simulations, training, etc. There are images of American soldiers part of the Future Force Warrior program using 360 controllers to pilot drones and such.

Regardless, even if Microsoft did sell the army the Xboxes to do simulations on and such people would be here saying things like "oh they're supporting X war, killing, etc," in other words the usual anti American sentiment present on this site by some members.

Edit: They had a recent USO thing in Iraq,

Who cares? The military is out there fighting for our companies to have the RIGHT to say thanks but no thanks.

I mean, how dare a company in a capitalist country worry about their bottom line?! The horror!

Seriously, nothing but love for our men and women in uniform. But I can't blame MS for being a bad guy in this situation.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5920d ago

You don't see Sony or Nintendo handing out consoles and you don't see Dell lining up to dish out PC's.

5920d ago
ShabzS5920d ago

they should give it to them... the army could use them as low grade explosives also...

duplissi5920d ago

@Comet

lol that vid had me on the floor....

SilentNegotiator5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Yeah, their reputation would SUDDENLY be tarnished, by selling their product to the army, not by their faulty products with hardware failures and 17-year-old viruses and shady, anti-competitive business, just this.

kaveti66165920d ago

The first reason Microsoft gave is actually a good business decision.

In 2006, which is when this guy talked to Microsoft, Microsoft was selling Xbox 360s at a loss. If the military wanted to purchase lots of 360s, Microsoft would lose a lot of money on the consoles, and more importantly, not make them up in software sales because the attachment rate for consoles sold to the military would probably be small.

The military doesn't plan on purchasing a plethora of games to go along with the consoles. At least that's what MS thought. And I think it was a good business decision.

To all the guys who think that training on consoles could save lives, what the hell are you thinking? Games are nothing like real life, and I think it is absurd that anyone could train in real warfare with a gaming machine.

Hint: Real warfare is not like Modern Warfare 2 or Battlefield or even MAG.

Dsnyder5920d ago

A title change plus a mass mod deletion? Something is fishy here...

morganfell5920d ago

No, the Army does not want to train on Xboxes. The equipment is not reliable enough but most of all the MS is more difficult than Sony concerning allowing non-publisher affiliated development kit usage. The US military cannot port over material without dev kits and a great amount of such training material is created in house. In addition, 360s server no other purpose whereas a laptop, though more expensive can provide multi-purpose employment. This is why the Marines and the Army use VBS2:

Man In Black5919d ago

Sony's a Japanese company, you moron. Why would they sell to American troops

Diamondwolf5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

1.Because they have an American division dedicated to American relations, ran by mostly American citizens, titled SCEA.........you moron.

2. You do realize that America includes North, South and Central...did you mean US?

bjornbear5919d ago

LMAO - thats why xD!! I love it how they ALL went out on it =P

hilarious...

- on a serious note -

I guess the army doesn't need 360...they have PC's...not MS's fault.

ryuzu5919d ago

Guess it makes sense the Army want 360s - cheap as sand and about as useful. Pile up the 360s and you've got a nice perimeter to keep those gun toting sheep farmers in their place...

360 - it only stops bullets...

r.

Raz5919d ago (Edited 5919d ago )

..but in that article picture, the boots are playing PS3.

Add in the fact that you can network 'em and make a supercomputer, and I think the military's liking the new $300 price tag.

"Sony's Japanese, why would they help American troops?"

Erm...Japan is their biggest ally in Asia. "Ally": a state formally cooperating with another for a military or other purpose, typically by treaty.

Sayai jin5919d ago

Actually, MS supports the Military buy offer what is called EEP (Employee Preferred Program). They offer the military and their direct family members the ability to buy MS Software for little to nothing. For instance MS Office 2007 Enterprise only cost me $12.95. Yup, only paid for the shipping. Military members buy this for personal use. They also offer Xbox 360 Consoles, controllers, games, etc on a discounted price as well. Dell and Apple offer the same program for military members. SO they do supports the troops. This coming from someone who is a military veteran.

Sony should supply ps3s to the army also.

Darkstorn5920d ago

It would be nice, but they're a Japanese company. If Japan had a standing military then I'm sure they'd donate to their own troops, but giving to another country is kind of stretching it, even for a relatively good corporation like Sony.

sikbeta5920d ago (Edited 5920d ago )

Yeah... at some point Someone will build Skynet anyway, or more like PSkynet3

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.
