It'd be nice if someone would figure out the REAL failure rates using a scientific method. Just so everyone will spot speculating on WHAT THEY DONT KNOW.

I'm sure it's higher than normal, but damn you people act like you've personally serviced every single console therefore your the best source of info on it.

I'm not b1tching about it because my launch 360 works like new.
-I play it constantly
-It has been on for over 48 hours before
-Never locked up
-Never RoD'ed
-No warpage
-Don't play in an especially well ventilated area

Nobody can say the real failure rate because Microsoft hides those numbers. If they would reveal them, then these stories would stop.

Where did this 30% come from? They wrote " to an EB Games store manager, who wished to remain anonymous". That's one manager, in the entire nation, with no other fact-checking. Good reporting.

Also: "a lot of the problems seem to appear after 12 months of use." Is that at all consistent with anything that anybody else has described regarding this console? It's not even consistent with their own article- the EB quote says failures are lower now, while the article claims otherwise. Real nice.

I'm sure anybody that needs to know does know there is a problem that needs adressing people know what the problem is; it has little to do with over all quality and more to do with design choice that i'm sure is being fixed.

knows xboxens have a problem. Hell I'm on my third one and have promised myself come good games or not I'm saying to hell with MS and getting a PS3. As simple as that, I'd rather have aT first a small selection of games,(although I'm still catching up on PS2 titles) on the PS3 then to have a machine that constantly breaks. It's just nuts, I love the games but the hassle of getting it repaired or switched out for a new one is just plain wrong. I believe this is gonna be one of the best things for the PS3. Tons of xbox customers just get tired of dealing with this and get a PS3. It may be a bit more but in the long run it's worth it to have a stable machine.

I wonder if they are factoring in the cost of repairing/replacing consoles into the projection of when the 360 will become profitable?

X-Box's are like an American made car. They are powerful, look nice and run good in the beginning but are poorly put together and breakdown easily. PS3's are like the Japanese Honda types. Built for the long haul and tough to figure out modifications but aren't as powerful until modifications are made. To me though. I would rather have a japanese product. Just well put together.

You should keep it in an area where it can breathe cool air and you need to clean it about every month and your good to go. Also remember to hook it up with a surge protector and to also make sure that your powerbrick gets some air to. Its like having a car you must keep it up if you want it to perform in top condition.

I have to admit when I 1st got my console I sent it back twice, not because it broke but because it was noisy (i had a small room at the time); So I got it replaced but eventually I did get the red ring issue but MS replaced it no problem; and also they sent me a spare by mistake, so I called them back to let them know and they said keep it. The same thing happned to my nephew and all four consoles are working just great thanks.

You have to take special care of all your electronics or they will all eventually croak.

30% is about what I would expect from what I've seen/heard personally as a retailer. That's definitely a lot more than the 7% or so that MS keeps touting.

Hopefully, the 65nm chips due out later this year will help.

This "news" again shows how lovely community PS3 has. Just because of it I'm staying away of PS3. I don't want to meet these people online. Imagine playing games with these apes. Too bad it sells badly, the community will stay small and obviously stupid for ages.

but, customer support was great, 5 minutes and i had a reference number and they were ready to ship me a box...now for the 139.90 to get it fixed....but I was/am still pissed...I was looking at PS3's, haven't heard any horror stories on a PS3 yet..but i need halo..i dunno its a tough decision..

The xbox 360 have hardware issues... and the PS3 and the wii have game issues.... what kind of word do we live in!? I hope microsoft addresses this problem before they lose the console war.

I knew right away there were more than serious issues with the 360 when I walked into purolator and the woman said to me - before I had even said I was there to send out my xbox.

I have posted comments on these types of stories before. I won't repeat it but I have had 5 Xbox 360's die on me. I just hope I never have to endure that pain again. I love my 360 but imagine holding on to the cold dead corpse of your favorite console..5 times...I have nightmares of that damn Ring of Death.

My current 360 freezes a lot and has many problems but at least it hasn't died. I haven't had a single problem with my PS3 but then again I don't play it as often as the 360.

I know it's been said by many people before, but this site is getting out of hand. It's no longer news, it's just the same articles over and over again and then people flaming each other. I kinda blame the site itself, it rewards people for posting flamebait articles. Not only that, shouldn't an article like this count as a duplicate? We all know that MS has had an unreasonably high failure rate with the 360. I'm sure we all know someone who has had a problem. Do we really need 10 articles per week about the subject? As a 360 fan, NOT FANBOY, 30% sounds reasonable and believable. But no more I'd say, probably around 10-20%. It's not like that number is going to increase, now with the new heatsinks. So it'll be nice not to hear the sony fanboys scream "xbot 1.5 sux balls" everyday.

I love my 360. It is the best console of the next generation, and I am really looking forward to some of the AAA titles coming out in the upcoming months.

However, Microsoft has a serious problem with the quality of the hardware. I have never seen anything close on any consumer electronic product to the failure rate of the 360. I am on my third console (luckily I have Best Buy extended warranty)and almost everyone I know who has one is now starting to have problems.

What I can't believe is the denial by Microsoft and people on these boards who state there is no problem! I'm sorry to say, but I estimate that the great majority of units are faulty (higher than 30%) and will die before we are on to the next generation of gaming. That is the truth.

The article is consistent with others, claiming that the 360 had a large failure rate closer to launch, but that the problem is becoming less and less. I know many people with 360's including myself. There were a couple of problems with launch consoles, but my friends who bought consoles a few months after it came out have been fine. Most people are very satisfied with their 360's. The hardware is good, and the software is unmatched.

Once again, Microsoft doesn't manufacture the 360's. They have partners to do that, and parts are ordered from all over. For example, if your disc drive goes bad, it is most likely the fault of Toshiba or Samsung. Same goes for the PS3. If anyone has a PS3 go bad, it is most likely not Sony's fault, but rather that of one of their manufacturing/supply partners.

Sony fans, do you blame the massive failure rate for PS2's on Sony, or manufacturers? If the 360 had a faulty design, and most of them were breaking, they would probably be recalled.

There has been talk of a class action suit. Of course they don't want to disclose this information...it's bad news for shareholders...of course they don't want to talk about how much they keep losing in the gaming industry and how much money they continue to blow in the industry (i.e. $50m for content on played out GTA??)...I am not surprised with this piece of crap machine...after the second time returning my 360...enough is enough...I'll take my PS3 with less games for now...but Blu-ray all the way will hold me off till there are more games coming out. disc drive problems,overheating.it's the same thing all over again.when i managed gamecrazy and launched 360,i had customers coming back with hardware problems.and the higher ups sent out a memo with the 1-800 number and told us to let the customers know that microsoft is handling the situation.they would switch out the system and send you the brown box.we stickerd it to all the registers.

and at the same time,we had 3 xboxs crap out with all the great saves we had on the system.customers used to love checking out games and hearing custom soundtracks coming throught the speakers for things like burnout 3..

the difference here is sony got sued about disc read error and had to fix systems for free with ps2.NO ONE SEEMS TO BE FILING A LAWSUIT TO FORCE MICROSOFT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

xbox360 is poorly made! The software is very good... but the hardware is crap. At the moment.. i'm playing with my 3rd 360. It makes a lot of noise, and i'm pretty sure it won't last very long anymore. Its unbelievable that there are people who are saying we are lying and making these stories up. Yes we know that X360 has a high failure rate. Its the only reason why i am holding out buying one.To PS3 owners. Stop gloating. Yes we do have a very reliable system but lets face it. 360 have the software at the moment and will continue to have them.We will eventually get ours but this is no reason to gloat. My friend has a X360 as well and it died on him 3 months later which pissed both of us off cause we loved playing gears of war but now he has to send it back to Australia to fix it.We live on a small island in the middle of the pacific and its hard to get things here.At the mean time we are now playing resistance on my PS3.

Sacrificed quality hardware in order to be first in the market. M$ banked on the idea that since their the only next gen console, people will buy additional 360 consoles because it is next gen.

I said it before I'll say it again 360 = crappy system.

If Live wasn't so good and there weren't a good library of games out for it, the 360 would fail. Those two things make it worth while to own a 360, but 30%?! For any other peice of hardware, that just wouldn't cut it, unless maybe it was super cheap, but 400 is still a hefty tag for a 30% that it's going to fail on you. Hopefully the new heat sinks help.

How ps-tards forget that sony was in the same situation with their 2nd console as well. PS2's failing like crazy, hell even the original PS had major problems. Having to flip my console upside-down to work isn't good. Compare that to the original Xbox, that thing was tough as nails. Now im not defending the failure rates or anything just reminding the fanboys what the facts are.

If you price the Xbox 360 WITH actual insurance, it should cost you about $600 dollars, on average. THat's about the same price as a PS3! Except with the hassles of having to dial Microsoft call center, having backwards compatibility, playing HD movies out of the box, HDD out of the box AND games that aren't constrained by discs. Did I mention more HDD space and WiFi? Oops, I just did.

Above, and it's funny how X-tards have to bring PS2 to the subject as if it mattered right now. Besides, PS2 had a much smaller failure ratio than the Xbox 360, it was cheaper to fix ($50 bucks) and it wasn't a massive failure error, it simply happened to not read some discs properly, unlike Xbox 360 which either: a) Can't read any disks, b) Scratches discs, c) Dies in its entirety, or d) The HDD dies (I'm on my third 360 20GB HDD too).

Why do I believe it? Well my own personal failure rate is 66% so 30% over the whole lot sounds about right. I'll get disagreed for that, but its a fact not an opinion. Deal with it.

A couple points?

I would love to know, out of 10-12 million sold, how many still work today? That total not only includes all the broken machines but also a machine for anyone that had to buy another one. I wouldnt surprise me if there were 8 million or so WORKING Xboxes in the world TODAY.

And its interesting to know that its illegal (at least in Australia) to send back a refirbished unit. That sounds like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.

One of our local shops is actually selling refirbished units. Good luck with that. At least they have a never ending supply of stock.

my launch console failed to boot with the HDD seated. The replacement they sent has worked like a charm for the last 1 1/2 years. I must say, I think Microsoft is going to have to address this issue. The sooner they do, the sooner they can put it behind them. Avoiding it is only making things worse.

actualy....ive heard that the failure rate will be 100%. due to the flawed design, all 360's will eventually break .maybe not today or tommorow but after time the components will give out. we will only know the true failure rate in about 10 years when their is no more 360's in existance because they all broke.

It didn't "EXPOSE" jack squat. There are no real numbers that prove ANYTHING.

The only thing of value in this entire 4 page article is his own personal experience with his repair. THATS IT. Fine, so report the story as such, but to peg the story as a expose' on the massive fail rates of the 360 is just dishonest. His motivation for the headline is clear. He got bad service from MS concerning his repair, and so he goes to his local EB and talks to the 15 year old manager who has pictures of Phil Harrison on his wall.

Do some REAL investigative work. Go talk to MORE THAN ONE DAMN STORE at the VERY least. Then come back and talk to us about it.

BTW. In no way does this mean that I am dismissing the hardware problems with the 360. There are way too many problems that shouldn't be happening. But COMON 30%? Get real...

Nobody seems to be complaining when cars are constantly having to be repaired. I mean hell, I could say that I know 3 people who have toyotas and all of them have needed to have parts replaced. GUESS THERES GOTTA BE A 100% failure rate!

Stuff breaks, and at least you see PROOF that microsoft is changing the components to address the issues. You have 3 processors running at 3.2 ghz...in a tiny little box. YEAH..there are probably going to be some heating issues that might pop up over time that you don't originally detect.

No consumer should have to deal with a fail rate that high. Microsoft could come out and admit it now, but I don't think there gonna just come out and say, "hey our regular Xbox360's are defective please buy a Elite." because I guarantee you that 100% of those who bought the regular 360 are gonna want a free exchange, and thats alot of money that Microsoft doesn't want to lose. We need an article on here straight from the 360 manufacture themselves, maybe they can shed some more light on the situation.

well today i played oblivion for a # of hours since it was my day off of work, and well i left it on for over 5 hours, and haven't had one problem.

I do have it properly ventilated so that could be why it hasn't messed up. It barely was hot i noticed.

MS finially gets exposed for it's dirty tactics, fact is my friend has had 4 xbox 360 within 6 months, nobody may or has to believe me, but it is the truth, i think the problem is mainly with the cheaper vwersion of the 360, yea i know i dont know the names of al the versions of the 360 because the console is boring and doesn't interest me that's why.

i'm not sure whats funnier, the 30% or the damage control the x-kiddies are trying do. neither is getting it done!!!!

Short lasting games for short lasting consoles, so theres a reason why most x360 games are so short if you play the x360 for more then 6 hours it will catch on fire to bad most games dont even last 6 hours except maybe gears of war.

The second Xbox 360 setup at my Circuit City just died a few days ago. The first one was ring-of-deathed; the second one has a disc read error. The second unit was running NBA 2K7 for several months, which looked really good I might add. It was in a perfect spot too -> HDTV section next to the entrance so anyone could pick up and play.

Two broken 360s in one retail store for the mass public to see...actually, come to think of it, I haven't seen a working 360 Kiosk* in months. All of them seem to be down, even at Gamestop. Maybe it's just in the cities I visit. What about you guys?

whats funny is how everyone on everysite in every forum is on thier 3rd 360 or thier 4th 360, its funny how only on the intrentets does this happen becuase in the real world with actual people out of the 3 I own(on teamxbox you can see I do)plus the ones my friends have which is around 12- 360' plus my 3 plus about 15 other people that I know have a 360 Only 1 person had a problem and it was cratching his discs but not the red lights, he also abuses everything he owns including his 360.

Also these so called third and fourth failed 360 stories always come from people who are known to troll a bit, now im not gonna say the 360 doesnt fail, im sure it does but it is fishy now hearing myHD failed to and this failed, wierd just wierd. what if i told you for a fact that my ps3 died last week, now it turns on but no video no sound, and my friend has 2 and one broke down. The ps3's at my gamestop has only a wii working for ps3 and 360 failed, and at toysrus in astoria ny the ps3 in the store has died.

Some of this is true other stuff isnt, its easy to lie on the internets.((my ps3 works and myfriends 2 ps3's work, the stores i mentioned ps3's died at both gamestop and toysrus).

Ive already lost two consoles to the rings of death but you know what? If my PS3 died on me tomorrow I wouldnt be as upset as I would if my 360 died. Mainly because THERES NOTHING TO PLAY on my PS3. Right now its just a Blu ray disc player, this might change with the fall/winter line up coming out but right now its hard to justify playing the PS3. Unless M$ gets their act together and starts making these consoles last longer than a year and 1 month (just outside of the warrenty) they will continue to get bad press. If this continues I could see this carrying over to the next console they make and people being extremely skeptical about purchasing another M$ console.

The 360 has hardware issues. It's true. This is old news. However it has and is only going to get better. When you actually read the article you'll find that ONE EB games manager found the failure rate AT LAUNCH to be about 30%. First of all, the entire article is inconclusive because it was only one person, and any real study of this would need to survey a much broader audience. Secondly, that was at launch. MS admitted to higher than normal failure rates for the launch consoles, and issued refunds. How is that so evil? Quality has gone up, there are FAR less issues with the newer consoles(elites). In the article the EB games retailer admits that failure rates have gone down. At launch, 25-30% is probably somewhat accurate. But today I'd say it was back around 5-8%, which, while not wonderful, is at least somewhat acceptable. It's only going to get better. Just like the ps3 game linup will, eventually, get better as well.

I have a gameinformer mag from DEC. 2005 with a intv. with a former designer of the org. XBOX and he himself said there were design flaws with the 360 cooling and motherboard layout and it would overheat and cause total hardware failures MS knew this the whole time but wanted to beat SONY to the market, why is this still a problem because people keep buying a defective product !!!!

Everything on the xbox360 is better! Yeeh.. i have no life but to bash the PS3. My girlfriend left me for the PS3! Thats why i make love to my 360! I don't talk with reason! I do not appricaite games, just the 360!

Come home from work and get ready to game and poof "ring o' death". MS was very cool in getting me a new one. I recorded my SN# and when I got it back it was a whole different unit. So I myself am at 50%. If this one breaks and MS gives me grief about it I am gonna say screw it. I'll sell my games to gamestop and get another PS3. I want a second one so that will be good incentive.

and never a problem. I keep it flat, in a ventilated cabinet, and occasionally clean it. The power brick is in the open behind the cabinet. Since its now 6 months out of warranty, I occasionally open it and blow it out with canned air. This kind of equipment is not made to be hauled around to the buddies house in a backpack. Treat it right, and it will treat you right.

The theory that early consoles were defective and Microsoft has addressed and fixed the issue is simply false. The defective rate is still highly unacceptable and new consoles are no less prone to failure.

Many consoles manufactured in late 2006 and early 2007 are dieing. Think a bit here, if only launch consoles were defective this problem would not still be appearing on message boards daily.

Also people, don't kid yourself and say, "I keep my console well ventilated and stroke it every night, therefore, it will be fine." It is a defective product.

Don't accuse the large number of people who have failed consoles of mistreating them. The failure rate is a problem and must be acknowledged and addressed by Microsoft.

Why didn't they fix this. I am sure they knew about this when they started selling the console. For that reason Microsoft sucks when it comes to hardware. The 360 is great but will no last with these kind of failure rates. Especially know that there are other options like the PS3.

I purchased my first two 360's January of '06, sold one n' the other was stolen shortly after n' replaced 'round Feb or March n' I've had it up 'til May (that's over a year). Neither of them gave me any problems, never saw any rings of death of wtf ever you'd like to call 'em. I'll tell ya tho, area was well vented and I suspended the power brick. How often did I play it? Often enough, played through HALO, HALO 2, GoW (twice), Condemned, Call of Duty 2, Fight Night Round 3, Saints Row, Quake 4, NFS Most Wanted. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Numerous Divx n' Xvid movies watched..hundreds of albums listened to with it. I USED the hell outta that system. Never...not once even FROZE on me. That's my story, my cousins had his for over a year and has it sitting on tile, no rings of death thus far. Another family member has had his for over a year as well...no red rings or any other prob's. My homeboy at my workplace...no problems. I'm getting another...how can I not? I've got Halo 3 Legendary pre-ordered for months now...GTAIV droppin' this year..I gotta..n' wont hesitate for one second when droppin' them 4 dolla's on the system. It's the best thang smokin' n' the price is right. I aint knockin' Sony. PS2 is the best console created, have it and owned a PS1 (as well as Xbox).

Now if it were just me who's 360 hadn't failed I'd be a fkn' fool to open my mouth, but it's me n' everyone else I know. I dunno...maybe all the good units were shipped to S. Florida?
