Devs already working on 'new Nintendo platform'

Developers are already working on a "new Nintendo platform" ahead of a possible reveal at this year's Game Developers Conference, an industry source has told VideoGamer.com.

Earlier this morning we were contacted by an employee at a major international publisher with the following information:

"Just heard a rumour that you may be interested in: Nintendo are going to announce a new platform at GDC. Some devs have already started work on it."

The Wiire's article (in the alt. source) says they talked to a developer about this rumor specifically with a new quote.

It's probably one of HHGs mates.

A new DS and PSP are practically confirmed for this year.
Expect an E3 or TGS reveal, my bets are on TGS seeing how japan is usually the first to get the new consoles(xbox not included) but they might suprises us with info at E3.

I just hope the new PSP has complete backwards compatability with PSP1/PSN games because i don't own a PSP and there's alot of games i want to play.

Kain815957d ago

I think the PSP2
will have full support PSN
it will be backwards compatible with PSone,PS2 and PSP games
btw iam sure Sony will bring all PS2 games to PSN and of course the wanted PS2 backwards-compatibility to PS3

I think you're right.

Its the Wii HD! Pachter was right all along :P

Seriously though. im betting no new announcement at GDC

RememberThe3575957d ago

Sony did say that they wanted to put all PS2 games on the PSN, so it's likely.

Well, It can't be another Home console for 2 things:

1· HOW they know what's going to be the "new hardware"?
2· Why making another console when the wii still selling?

So, it can be a new DS or just a BIG Rumour

infamousinfolite5956d ago

Wii HD!! I think I remember before Wii came out, they was still working on it and I constantly visit IGN for Wii info. and I believe they said 5 years from that time they was gonna go into the HD era but idk we'll see what happens at E3

matey5956d ago

Then I assume it's going to challenge MS and Sony's attempts at motion control. Nintendo can continue squeezing out the Wii (imagine what a price drop would do), or they could put the money into a new console, but I wonder if they would start appealing to their core audience again.

Maybe they will announce a new motion device too?

If it's a new console then wow that's not only early but it's also a bit premature considering Nintendo is doing just fine this generation.

Jamescagney5957d ago

I don't think anyone can be sure of Nintendos plans, they're very vague with information until the last moment. I'd like to think it's a new console, but I doubt it is. Could be something entirely new that no one has thought of doing.

Which the other companies will copy later on.

solidt125957d ago (Edited 5957d ago )

Even though they are making money on the Wii they need to go ahead and release a new Console that can do more than 480p. The reason I say that is because a large percent of people have HD Wide screen TV now and The Wii can't fill the screen without looking like crap.(using laments terms) The PS3 and the 360 does HD and will be getting motion controls so Nintendo needs to do it. Plus they can easily sell the Wii HD to almost everyone who bought a Wii. That's alot of consoles.

ChickeyCantor5957d ago

". The reason I say that is because a large percent of people have HD Wide screen TV now and The Wii can't fill the screen without looking like crap"

And still im surprised that many people here use their PS3 or 360 on a SD tv...

Makes you wonder...doesn't it?

Nintendo has proven to be unpredictable, and one strategy that can work for a company with disruptive products is to disrupt their own products. They may not be able to exploit all the profits they could possibly make from their previous disruptive products (as if they need any more from the Wii and DS), but they will be able to further sostain profits (the way apple does with its iPod and iPhone lines) by not allowing anyone else to disrupt their own products. Waiting too long is too risky given Natal and PS Arc's threats of 1uping Nintendo.

Not saying they will disrupt their Wii line of products, just saying I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

I'm sure planning has been afoot for the Wii's successor for awhile.

But I highly doubt any devs would be working with any sort of prototype. Hell, third parties haven't even begun to truly push the Wii.

ChickeyCantor5957d ago

And honestly i dont think they will.
Most devs have old engines lying around, add some new stuff and call it a day.

Most dev won't push the wii.

solidt125957d ago

are you serious? Third parties have move on from the Wii, and that's another reason why a new Wii is needed. They weren't seeing the sells they thought they would see. Only a few 3rd party games sell but all 1st party games sell.

ChickeyCantor5957d ago

Actually loads of third party games have sold over a million.

sack_boi5957d ago

Nintendo stopped relying on third party 15 years ago.

They don't need third party, they're selling millions of software and hardware.
There's going to be a Wii successor someday (obviously) but that will (almost) not have anything to do with them wanting more third party support.

ChickeyCantor5957d ago

They do need third party developers.
In order to expand your audience you need as much as possible.

Its ignorant to say they dont need them.

Ps2 was a extreme success due to their party support.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

jznrpg34d ago

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Smellsforfree34d ago

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Loktai34d ago

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.

I enjoyed both Rush games, I did think the action was sometimes too fast to see what was coming up in terms of hazards though, which meant replaying the same stage a bunch of times, other than that they were enjoyable, good special stages, 3D sections and bosses for the most part.

DS is one of the best consoles of all time. Such a rich library of software
Zelda were all glorious on it.
