Bing Will Be Profitable, Microsoft Exec Says

Microsoft has lost $5 billion building the online business over the past four years and hopes to reverse the trend following a search advertising partnership with Yahoo!.

"As soon as we close and implement the Yahoo! deal, we have achieved a milestone: for advertisers, we are a credible No. 2," Yusuf Mehdi, senior vice president of Microsoft's online audience business, said.

I actually enjoy using Bing. I like the new background they have every day. Some of the pictures are extraordinary.

zeeshan5949d ago

They have a loonnnnnngggggggggg way to go before they could even begin to match Google's search quality.

IdleLeeSiuLung5949d ago

Google is still the best search engine around and Bing got a fairly long way to go.

Just take a look at their interface on the ad pages and it is clear, they need to start copying Google like crazy!

Bing itself is nice, but Google still has the best functionality.

$5 billion dollars? That is insane especially when you consider that the biggest competition was a Ph.D project by two guys.

IdleLeeSiuLung5949d ago

Yeah, but that is backed by billions now....

Yeah bing is actually pretty decent, it has google like results so thats a plus and I love its image section(huge).

Some of its other stuff is decent as well.

Christopher5949d ago

So... Bing won't be profitable... it's the deal with Yahoo! that will be profitable considering they're the only ones competing with Google in searches.

Honestly, all they're doing is throwing billions more dollars at the problem and hoping in the long run it will see a profit. But, more importantly, they want to run everything - OS, video game consoles, technology devices, search engines, and pretty soon we'll see the first Microsoft electric car.

Okay, bit heavy sarcasm on that last line, but seriously I think Microsoft needs to back the f*** up with their goals of dominating the technology market from all angles.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit19d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
