GameReactor: Mass Effect 2 Review

Two years has passed since Commander Shepard saved the Citadel and the galaxy from an ancient threat in the shape of Sovereign. He's a hero, but depending on how you played the first game he will be more of a hero to some than to others. The wonderful science fiction universe of Mass Effect, with all its races, colourful characters, fantastic technology is still here, as we get to explore new races and characters along with some familiar faces.

Pennywise5955d ago

I played ME when it was called Dragons Age.

N4PS3G5955d ago

1. Nobody asked if you played Dragon Age
2. Thanks for confirming you haven't played any Mass Effect games

;)

Cold 20005955d ago

Lol that penny whatever guy just got owned like he was 5 years old.

Guido5955d ago (Edited 5955d ago )

There is not a snowball chance in he11 that ME2 is better than Uncharted 2. Period.

Disagree if you're an Xbox fanboy that doesn't own a PS3 and shaves their legs.

Redlogic5955d ago

So I come to the comment section to maybe find a thread that hasn't been contaminated. There goes that...Seriously, if you aren't here to comment on Mass Effect 2 then just leave. It's so simple. Why bring up UC2? Why complain about some score some random guy you have never met gave the game? Mass Effect 2 is a great achievement so let the people who actually want to talk about the game do just that. Don't derail the thread by being the first person to bring up a ps3 game. This website is beyond disgusting sometimes.

Pennywise5955d ago

I didn't comment to knock ME2. I commented to knock this stupid gamereactor site.

Anything that gets above an 8 from them will have me saying the same thing.

Solidus187-SCMilk5955d ago (Edited 5955d ago )

I HAVE BOTH U2 AND MASS EFFECT 2.

ME2 has better SP which has more FAR MORE replay value, but I love U2 for its multiplayer which is something ME doesnt have.

Who asked the ps3 fanboys their opinion on PS3 games in the ME2 article anyways? NOONE.

If you dont beleive me add me and I will carry you and my pathetic team in a game of team deathmatch, and make the other team cry through the mic, like always.

Also I will confirm that people on U2 go into "EXTRA CRY MODE" if you put XBOX as your clan tag on U2.

edit-- pennywise is just crying, like usual, because he doesnt agree with a review. Booo hooo

And Guido-- I actually own ME1/2 and U2 and beat uncharted 1 and there isnt a snowballs chance in hell that either Uncharted game is better than ME2.

I've counseled many troubled juveniles, probably one of the most common emotions that had the biggest negative affect on their lives besides anger was JEALOUSY. I often found that both emotions were unwisely used as a defensive and offensive tactic to hurt others in an effort to hide that individuals own issues of low self-esteem. Ironically people who consistently find a reason to attack everyone around them who do not agree with them, unintentionaly end up only exposing more of their own pain rather than anything else. Its clear your pain is caused by an unreasonable emotional attatchment to a piece of plastic, made by a company who does NOT love you.

UC2 is a helluva great game, ME2 is a helluva great game, which is better totally depends on the gamer, its really obvious you didn't show up here to talk about the merits of ME2, and your comments only prove how jealous you are that both games are not on ps3. Trying desperately to use UC2 to downplay ME2's greatness is a bad move since real gamers if possible will try to buy and enjoy both. They certainly won't go out of their way to hate on either game.

I hoped this little therapy session helps.

ME2, IMO, deserves a solid 9. (That may jump to 10 when I complete it).

ABizzel15955d ago (Edited 5955d ago )

I agree with you Mass Effect is a solid 9. The weakest part of Mass Effect is once again the game play, which should hold the most weight in a review, but that's not the case as so often it is with certain games made by certain developers.

The highlights of Mass Effect are the story, the graphics (some low textures and graininess still carry over from Mass Effect 1, but not nearly as much), audio/ voice work, dialog/scripting, longevity, and the options you have to play the game. But the game play needs work still.

Using the rating system on n4g I would rate Mass Effect 2 like this.

Graphics- 9.5 (Far fewer technical hiccups than the first game, but low res textures and graininess still show their face)

Sound- 10.0 (Excellent voice work and audio. The ability to choose what you want to say is available in many games, but Mass Effect is the only game to truly master this.)

Gameplay- 8.0 (Having to navigate wheel menus to switch weapons or use powers suck all the time sucks (Resistance: FOM worked by allowing the R2 button to cycle through weapons). Shepard still doesn't go into cover all the time when you're running towards cover and pressing the "A" button.) The game and controls feels so separated, because of so many menus for EVERYTHING.

Fun Factor- 9.0 I want to continue the games for the story alone, and the relationships that the characters develop with one another, but the gameplay/ controls ruin it for me personally, but if you can get past that then there's fun to be had.

Online- n/a

Total- 9.0 Everything about Mass Effect 2 is great, except the transition from gameplay to controls.

And I'm not trying to put Mass Effect 2 down in anyway. I own the first game, and rented the second game to see if any of the gameplay issues I had with the first would be fixed, and they weren't. Be honest with yourself, everyone who played a shooter on the 360 and PS3 for that matter that know playing Mass Effect feels like playing a mediocre 3rd person shooter.

Myze5955d ago

@2.1

Hmm, I'm guessing the 360 version is different than the PC a lot in terms of controls. The gameplay in the PC version doesn't suffer from the problems you are stating. You can switch to your previous weapon by pressing "x," and it's pretty rare to ever need more than two different guns (maybe need heavy weapons if you meet something bigger, but once every couple hours isn't a big deal). Also, using powers just requires the press of a number, never leaving live action. If the 360 version does require you to go into the pause mode everytime you wanna use a power, I could see that as very annoying.

Just like in Dragon Age for the ps3 and 360. I got the PC version just because I couldn't even imagine getting near the same level of enjoyment having to pause the game everytime I wanted to use a skill.

Anyway, to people mentioning this site and UC2 review. UC2 and ME2 are un-comparable games. They are just WAY too different to make direct comparisons. I never thought I would say it, but I enjoy ME2 and UC2 equally (before I would think there is no way it would come close to UC2). So for me, ME2 deserves the 10, and this site screwed up by not giving UC2 the 10 it deserves as well (not the other way around where ME2 should have got an 8 or lower as well).

ABizzel15955d ago

Then I really need to get the PC version, but the controls for the 360 version, just don't work as you expect them to.

Tainted Gene5955d ago

"You can switch to your previous weapon by pressing "x,"....."

same thing on 360

You really need to drop the obvious distaste of anything 360 related dude......it's leaving a bitter taste in your mouth.

Some advice for you, buy a 360,experience THE best games of all time, kick back, relax and enjoy...........

Never to late to 'jump in' :)

Pennywise5955d ago (Edited 5955d ago )

Are you out of your mind with your user name and avatar. I think you meant to have a 360 in your picture.

If it wasn't for teenage highschool boys in America, 360 would still be a degree.

lordkemp0075955d ago

What i am most enjoying about this game is the incredible sense of immersion and fantastic creature designs.

Well done Bioware and EA. 2010 is off to a great start.

To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

anast527d ago

They lost too much talent.

IAMRealHooman527d ago

2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan775d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave775d ago (Edited 775d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.
