People build their collection on the 360 since it was the first to come out on the market. Remove all the people who owns both console and let the people who only owns one console to buy the games and see the results.

Another explanation would be the diverse fanbase of the PS3.

Japan = JRPGs and Racing games. They don't seem to like Shooters much
Europe = Racing games and sports games.
NA = Shooters.

The fanbase don't focus on one specific genre.

Its a fact that 360 owners are the older ones, using headsets, buying many games and so on.

PS3 owners dont have the money, they dont even play online.

I have some theories that I'll point out and for this post I'll actually try to be non-fanboyish.

1. More 360's sold than PS3's.
2. Twice as many 360's in US then PS3's. And we all know that US is where people play games, hence the FAT population.
3. Sony pumps out games, MS doesn't. Wich game will sell more? 10 exclusive games a year or one Halo a year? Simple maths.
4. PS3 exclusives can at first glance seem to not sell...but every other 360 game besides Gears and Halo can be compareable if you take the install base into consideration. Remember bots, you can't sell more games if there are less consoles.

The only game that I can agree with the bots that sold "poorly" is KZ2.
The genre is the most popular. There was alot of hype and marketing. The technology in the game is unmatched and despite what bots say, It's really fun to play. But still it "only" managed to sell 3 million copies till date. It should at least have sold 2 million more.

Because the games are just betas.. the devs finish their game son the PS3 via PSN + patches, patches, patches

Just look on UC2.. how many patches did the game already got? the 4th one?? LOL

Or Modern Warfare 2.. 1ST DAY patch, + a Patch to fix a patch and finally the FINAL PATCH to fix the last 3 ones, lol.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Ps3 has a lot of really good exclusives, I have a couple friends for example that haven't gotten mag yet cause they are still playing uncharted like crazy. They all say they are waiting a couple more months before they get it. Ps3 exclusives have Long legs, Where as 360 owners get the games right away..

Microsoft pulled a PS2 this gen with the 3rd party support and Sony didn't realize that the 3rd party support is what made the PS2.

PS3 exclusives sell fine. They just don't sell Halo numbers.

come on i can name at least three ps exclusives that prove this article is wrong:
1. MGS 4(4.52m)
2. Uncharted 2(2.76m)
3. FF XIII(already sold well in Japan at 1.87m and yes it's exclusive in Japan lol)

who wrote this non-sense....just about every PS3 exclusive has reached or went over the 1 million mark which is still a great number of sales....except for Haze and a few stragglers in between, but even that sold about 500,000 from what I remember, which is beyond me.

Your argument fails. What if ME2 never breaks 2 mil in its lifetime? UC2 will still have outsold it. Like I said in another article, PS3 exclusive's sell over time. If a Ps3 game doesn't break 3 mil in its first week its considered a flop by 360 fanboys.

I didn't really like Uncharted 1 and I didn't really like the Uncharted 2 beta, neither co-op nor versus.

As much as I heard how great the game was and all, I just didn't find it fun personally. The reviews and the marketing weren't going to change my opinion.

they sell just as much as any other PS3 exclusives with few exceptions from established franchises like Halo and Gear and MGS.

Uncharted 2 sold 1 million in the states in 2 months of being on the market, the first game didn't get that lucky. as it still hasnt sold a million in the states, but worldwide it's sitting very nicely at 2.3 million.

Resistance Fall of man and Motorstorm are the few that cleared 2 million in the states. PS3 exclusives Sell quite will and they will continue to do that.

Gran Turismo 5p has sold 4.99 world wide on disc.

Motorstorm 2 has sold 1.5 million world wide
LBP has sold 3 million worldwide

I have said this a 1000 times, most PS3 Exclusive that are blockbuster in style GOW UC etc, are single player experiences, meaning you play through once maybe twice and it sits. Even if they have a multi player component its usually not that good or a late add on.

Xbox Exclusives because of Xbox Lives standards and infrastructure push for a 50 50 in single player and online experience

You know its funny, last gen, PS2 owners loved their system it had so much 3rd party support and was NOT the best hardware

However now, 3rd parties dont matter to former PS2 owners and 1st parties do, and hardware and graphics are the most important, this truly makes me laugh because if anything the Xbox is more like the PS2 was and PS3 is more like the Original Xbox with its great 1st parties and superior hardware.

It's funny how ps3 fans always want to brings up xbox owners buying an expansion pack for $60 dollars but they seem to forget that sony charged them full price or $40 dollars (I don't remember how much it costed when it first came out) for pretty much a demo to a game thats schedule to come out later this year in grand turismo prologue. Do you realize how big prologue is?..It could be considered bigger then a lot of games, bigger then ODST and guess what Sony didn't even charge $60 for it. ODST is halo 3.5 and MS knew regardless how short how dumb and how bad looking the game is 360 fanboys wold eat it up. There was never a GT5.3 previous to GT prologue.

The PS3 has so many games to buy. It's not like the 360 where you only have 1-3 games. On the PS3 you get choices. Only the PS3 owner needs to have around $200.00 a month for games to spend. For example I want to buy Heavy Rain, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, MLB 10: The Show, God of War 3, Yakuza 3, Just Cause 2, and Crysis 2. That is almost $500.00 worth of games. There is no Heavy Rain, MLB 10: The Show, God of War 3, and Yakuza 3 on the 360. I can do this anytime of the year and show you what I mean. I didn't even mention the other games that a lot of people would like to buy. So it is simple. It is all about choices. The PS3 has the most.

My take on the matter is that Sony games do not appeal to the larget market, that is USA, and don't appeal to kids and teens.
A kid will always prefer Marcus Fenix or Master Chief over Nathan Drake, Sev or Cole.
Do teens prefer to play as a postman like Cole over an highly armored badass like Marcus or Shepard?
The answer is no.
A kid would never pick a guy in jeans and white t-shirt over an Alien badass slayer.

And don't say that Gears is 18+, since parents don't truly pay attention to this "detail"
This is the reason why PS3 sales are less in NA, since teens don't want a grandpa console.
Kratos could be the only one to push the sales of the system.
Not GT5, because kids prefer NFSs and Burnouts over a sim.
And, in a teen point of view, since we have been kids, it's 100% legit.

Many say that being original and varied is a strong point of Sony, but they really should add a first party badass franchise.
They relied on third party to have the Prince of Persia, Dante, Leon, etc..., but now you can have those characters even on 360.

PS3 needs some badassness, that's the reason why MGS4 sold a lot.

My guess is the user-base is skewed.

When you look at the fanbase, I just can't say that everyone bought that PS3 hardware for just games, though they could buy games if they wanted to but the user-base is skewed.

Though it's my own opinion, the 360 user-base has a stronger concentration of PURE GAMERS.

Well the Xbox 360 is not the best or cheapest DVD player around so I doubt it's being bought just because of. Hey some may disagree, that's fine. Jus tlike the PS1/2 th ePS3 has not reached that market saturation where it gets that strong concentration of gamers that are PURE GAMERS.

That will happen with that $199 Price, just as it always have.

MARKETING

I own a ps3 only and many of my friends are on 360 only. I, however, am more into games than they are. They play the Modern Warfares, DJ HEro, Guitar HEro, Halo, etc. They even ask me as to why I have a PS3. I tell them better exclusives. Then I tell them about the amazing titles PS3 has....I mention Uncharted and they have never heard of the game. Games like Halo, Gears, etc absolutely blitz the media and afternarket channels with not only clever and exciting marketing, but paraphernalia as well.....action figure, toys, promos with Burger King/McDonalds...T-shirts, more toys, etc. Sony is going to do this with God of War. Lets see what happens

uncharted is not a established franchise like Metal Gears and God of War and other...but now that many bought uncharted 2 and experienced the quality of this game I know for sure that the anticipation for the next uncharted game is going to be huge and is going to sell millions.

look at the 360 fanboys talking crap here, only thing ps3 doesnt have is install base in the US, which 360 got with a one year lead.

I attribute this to a few factors:

A) Sony doesn't market its console and games as much as they should

B) I believe that in general PS3 owners are older than 360 and Wii owners therefore tend to have more responsibility and have less time to game.

C) Sony offers a bigger variety of 1st party games as opposed to the 360 which boasts more popular and well established shooters.

explanation:

A) I have owned the PS3 since launch I think it's a fabulous console, but it doesn't get as much exposure on TV commercials as its counterpart. They worked on it a bit this past holiday season with their clever rumor manager advertisements after the price drop. Sony needs to advertise their first party games more, and remind the consumers that these games can ONLY be played on the PS3.

B) I could be wrong in this area but I'm speaking through experience. Generally speaking I know a lot more PS3 owners that are over 25 than I do 360 owners. If you are older chances are you have more responsibilities, have a budget for games because by this time mommy and daddy aren't purchasing you new games, you have to buy them yourself, or you in fact might be a daddy already buying your kids games. If you don't have your parents buying you games you have to buy them yourself, meaning you will be more selective with your purchase. If you are older chances are you have less time to game so you will buy less games throughout the year.

C) MLB The Show, Flower, Gran Turismo, Ratchet N Clank, God of War, Motorstorm, Killzone 2, Resistance, Demons Souls, Heavy Rain, Uncharted, MGS4...etc. Those are PS3 exclusives I named off the top of my head, check out the variety in those exclusives, you got sports, racing, action game, platform game, rpg, etc... When you think of the 360 you automatically think Halo and Gears of War, those games will sell, a lot, there's no denying that. The PS3 has a wider variety of exclusive franchises and cater to a variety of gamers, it's not just all shooters.

These are just my opinions, I've been gaming for a while I'm 28. I'm so happy to see how the gaming industry has evolved, and see it become so successful on a global scale. No matter which console or games you own, enjoy them. Peace and happy gaming.

Sony's marketing is very last gen. Their marketing/sales scheme doesn't seem to surpass the rate at which games sold on the PS2, I think they figured at the beginning of this generation, why does this gen have to be different?

MS has defined how to appeal to today's consumer. It's that that Sony did poorly. It's that Microsoft has been phenomenal.

Digital Sales from Amazon.com, Ebay, etc. are what the majority of videogames are being sold which is not covered by NPD, catalog sales, import sales, are also important again NPD does not cover import sales and catalog sales. Well Jack Tretton already answered this and I loved the line because he took a jab at xbox 360 at the same time. He said, "the playstation audience isn't a one-trick pony." Meaning that since their audience is so varied Sony has to appeal to every one in their audience. That's why Sony's open to ideas because they draw in and appeal to the audience.

if your game doesn't sell 5 million copies in the first month, it sucks in the eyes of the public. Very few games sell like Halo and Call of Duty. Sorry. Uncharted 2 is still game of the year, regardless of how much it sold.

- sonys advertising has not been that good until recently and even then, for every 1 ps3 ad i would see 3 microsoft or nintendo ad

- there big franchises from the PS2 era have not come yet, they could pull in bug numbers especially GT5

- ps3 owners are diverse, they wont all just buy the latest shooter

1 of my mates' dad bought a ps3 so he could watch blu-ray films but my mate isn't into gaming that much so has only actually bought 1 or 2 games for it

I have talk to people that brought a PS3 for Bluray only an didn't know it could even play games....-_- I wish I was joking but it is true.

I think mostly because the PS3 just now started to get bigger in the sells but people are not buying games as much, then again it doesn't help if you got alot of bills to pay and no money to throw to a game.

As far as the tired Blu Ray excuse...keep in mind that this is current technology now, not next gen. People that bag on that don't sound current on technology, but instead like old geezers out of touch. Which is odd, because I know that video gaming is still a young person's hobby. I suppose fanboys would be singing a different tune if both platforms were up to date on current optical drive technology.

Sony started to tackle their hardware ads very well, but then they had this bad idea that they should promote both in one add. For their heavy hitters that are games some people may shrug off as not their type of game, they need to put money into the marketing for it. Mass Effect is not a game many people would normally be into, yet MS puts a decent ad campaign behind it to get it out and have people become interested in it. I just dont understand how sony hasnt realized that in order to make money, you must spend money on adds. I'm gonna be honest, i dont see ads for any sony products very often..and usually its only a Ps3 add. I havent seen a psp add in forever(since the GT:psp) but they didnt even show off the go...idk, someone needs to make them realize Advertising is more important than having a quality product. people buy what they see.

The largest part of the market is 16 year old kids
and xbox 360 has the most 16 year old kids

Sony's PS3 dishes out many games, from EVERY genre! Sony also takes risk for their gamers, and the profession of video games...which is why I love the Playstation brand. (Other systems/companies do things also, but Sony goes the extra mile, in my opinion.)

Take Blu Ray for example: MS could have (and let's face facts, SHOULD HAVE) at least kept HD-DVD, but didn't want to put money up front. (meaning, to take a loss in the beginning of their next generation console sales.) And the same can be said for built in wifi, hard drives, HDMI ports in 1st wave of 360's, and free online. Sony on the other hand....has built a reputation of customer friendly, developer freedom, and price affordable. (Yea, the PS3 was high at 1st, but it dropped down in price FASTER & more frequently than the other two current gen systems!) EVERYONE laughed at Blu Ray, now look at em...I'm sure that 99.9% of the people on this forum has Batman: The Dark Knight on Blu Ray!

Anyhow, check VG Chartz, among others, and you will see that Sony has multiple exclusives that sell great. Sure, No Halo, which is MS's biggest selling exclusive (11.0 million for Halo 3...and 3.6 for ODST). However, add up all of the other 2 systems exclusives, then add up Sony's.....what you will see is a very interesting fact. Sony doesn't have a high seller like Halo 3, or Mario Kart Wii (19.7 million sold), But Sony's strength in high selling exclusives, proves it's strength in numbers. Also, compare the Pro Rated AAA (9.0 and above) exclusives...I wounder which system has the most? Also...which system has 9.0 exclusive rated games in EVERY GENRE??

the other problem of sony's is that they tend to market one or 2 games and leave the rest or market and advertise one game(uncharted 2 for example) with ONE ad(pretty much) and hope it does wonders..

but hey they are selling crazy since 09, so you'll see the sales of exclusives go up for sure :) and hopefully they will take what they learned in actually putting out a decent marketing strategy and ad's for the console and start using it with the games also :)

p.s 360 exclusives(without starting a fanboy war here) are cheaper to make, there for giving microsoft and the developers more of a budget for the marketing and campaign, plus the vast amount of 360s owned it makes sense that they sell more :)

when i play uncharted 2 i cannot seem to get the display to 1080p. i have tried adjusting the settings and it automatically goes to 720p every time. my 360 upconverts games to 1080p why cant my ps3 do this? what am i doing wrong?

Well, this argument is like the movie industry doing just that. Holding every movie up to the standards set by Titanic and Avatar. 2 billion box office or you suck. Or the music industry expecting everyone to sell records like Michael Jackson (who recently sold more dead than most acts ever will alive).

I would have to assume that aggressive marketing has been Sony's downfall in this area. When a new Halo comes along, it it hyped and marketed in a way that makes other 360 games fade into obscurity (almost like they don't exist).

I don't see enough advertising for Sony exclusive games like Uncharted, or even for the machine itself (I'm in Australia mind you).

On saying this, Mark Of Kri, Ico, SOTC, BG&E, Okami, Psychonauts and many more totally awesome PS2 games also did dismal sales, and many of these titles were also released for 360.

Many people are casuals and only bought there 360's for Halo..sure in the wait they had some big sellers like Gears and such. PS3 I assume is the same, people only bought (or will buy) the PS3 for GT5, GOW3, and the usual big gun blockbusters, and they have some success with other games.

Another thing is the name Unchartered........It sounds like an accounting firm (don't get me wrong, I own both games and regard them to be the best of the best). But it seems if you have words like war (gears of war, modern warfare) or any other name that is straight to the point...then your game has a better chance of selling big. Ico means nothing to most, as well as Shadow of The Collusus.....they are obscure names that don't grab the majority of ill=informed gamers attention from the start.

A catchy name, with a strong marketing push is Sony's main problem...Now Heavy Rain is around the corner, yet who is looking out for a videogame that seems to forecast the weather. It's a shame that these artsy, new genre defining games are named artsy fartsy as well, as I believe if they called the games Shadowkiller, Warmonger, Devils Of War, Shoot to Kill, or any other mind numbingly by the numbers name they would have a chance to sell better.

I mean Gears is a good example, it has a quite catchy (but also smart) name, this combined with that awesome tv commercial with that awesome song setting the tone (Mad World I think).....just helped sell the game...I mean the add gave us visual and audio hype, that made anyone who viewed that even has a small interest in games want to go straight out and buy it.

I mean, who goes to school or work and starts asking, "oh man, have you played that game Ico, or Psychonauts", or other such named games....Nobody really, everyone is to busy spitting sh1t about "cooler" sounding games like Grand Theft Auto, Gears Of War and the like. I guess gaming is still widely considered geeky enough, so majority of sheep want to keep up with the Jones's.....I prefer to just buy the games that I like, regardless of name, and hype.... I just keep a look out on many sites and mags, and read about any and all games to see if they cater to my tastes.

I agree with the it being one of the best games around atm psgeneration, proabably even one of the best games off all time. But the fact remains, that the games story, gameplay and everything else equates to a widely appealing game, thats sales should be close to what Gears Of Wars were......Yet it is not. It ships with newly sold machines in package deals, as Gears did, yet it is eons behind in sales to games of similar class...... And I put it down to Sony not marketing the game, and defining what type of game it is, how it looks and plays in there advertising campaigns, and the fact that something simple like the name of a game, eg. Unchartered sounds like something to do with accounting, in fact in Australia Chartered Accountants are advertised frequently. So to me, it is suffice to think that ND should have come up with a more catchy name, as it is not a game name that has stuck in people heads.

I've never bought a $60.00 game because of the name. That's really reaching. Quality makes you remember the name. I don't remember bad games' cool names. Halo isn't exactly evocative of its meaning. There's no angels or christians under the hood.

Here is a simply question how come word of mouth doesn't work on the ps3. Why is marketing the only answer? Can sony's game get any better. Are people really having fun replaying their games?

What ever happened to the days when a Title reached a million sales. I mean thats a huge margin of profits not to mention a ton of people are playing that title. Basically any developer would be happy to see their game reach 1 million sales.

Heck what about smaller studios, their dang happy if their game reaches 500k units. Its all about size of the studio and audience. If you have over 500 people working on a game costing over +40 mil to make, then ya maybe then your aim is for over a million but most games today are half that cost and development size.

Everyone including PS3 owners has it crammed into there heads that sales equal quality. Even long ago people brought tons of products including pet rocks, fuzzy seat covers,platform shoes with fish in them, gold teeth, chia pet etc. Does that mean all this stuff wasn't worthless junk? No, it just ment that you were dumb enough to fall for the hype. Look at Modern Warfare 2.It netted them 1 billion worldwide but it is so easily hacked and full of glitches, it makes you wonder if Infinity ever glanced at the game before it was put on shelves. Yet when Modern Warfare 3 comes out it will sell twice as fast with probably 10 times the glitches. Uncharted 2 was close to perfection, with almost no glitches or problems and was nominated for GOTY by at least 30 times.Yet it struggles to reach the 3 million mark and is accused of being cliche and overated. Does that make any sense to anyone who isn't a fanboy?

I guess the answer lies in the marketing and advertisement of the game. They are not many commercials for other PS3 exclusives, and Sony isn't greatest in the advertising department. Some of Sony ADs I've seen gives me a "WTF just happen" feeling. If Microsoft knows how to do anything, then it is hyping a game. Swear I get goosebumps watching them, and that's why 360 exclusives sell very well.

Compare and contrast the commercials for exclusives of the competing console and tell me what feeling you get from watching them.

Man u sure excluding a bunch of games that aren't shooter. These games not only sell well on x360 but are also diverse. Where the f are these:

1. Project Gotham 3 and 4 (Racing)
2. Forza 2 and 3 (Racing)
3. Test Drive Unlimited (Racing)
4. Lost Odyssey (one of the highest JRPG selling record this gen and a good game)
5. Fable 2 (WRPG)
7. KuF:cod (kRPG, action RPG, if you like Diablo type, i don't see why you won't like this game, given it got crappy rating, but i love it. Spend probably +700 plus on this cause i'm a diablo fan)
8. CrackDown (sand box)
9. Dead Rising (action)
10.ME 1 and 2 (yes it does have shooting, but WRPG not too keen with using sword in the future mind u. Having a F* sword is not a requirement for an RGP. Infact, ME has much more RPG element than other so call RPG like folk lore? Saying ME is a shooter just show that you haven't play the game)
11.Viva Pinata (platform)
12.Okami: element of Power (platform)
13.Banjose Kazooii: nut and bolts (platform)
14.Halo Wars (RTS, it is actually pretty decent RTS, not as good as Star Craft, but for a console using controller, it is pretty good)
15. There are a lot more RPG games (JRPG, WRPG, KRPG) for the x360 as well, but they aren't selling as well or doesn't have good score. It may depend on each personnel taste. There are some good games like Last Remanent, infinite undiscovery, Magna Carta 2, etc....but i guess i like RPG

If you still say PS3 have more variety or diverse games category, then i don't know what else to say. Can't beat blind fanboy i guess. If they so diverse, why it is that most PS3 owner buy multiplayer game anyways (MW2, AC2, etc....) Arguing that PS3 is diverse therefore doesn't sell as well has no merrit.

2million mutiplied by 60 dollars equals $120million. now does that seem like a flop when the game may have cost anywhere from 10 to 40 million to make and more than doubles the investment.

This has turned into a 360 vs PS3 debate...and as bad as the 360 fanboys claim that PS3 fanboys are over run on this site, it seems there are just as many Xbox Extremist, MS Neo Nazi's fighting the cause for Bills bank account, otherwise this topic wouldn't have delved into a console comparison topic...All I will say is I love have both machines (all 3 if we include my little boys Wii), and all offer something the other one doesn't. All the asshat fanboys on here comparing diversity in both systems games lineup need to remove there heads from there asses and realize that both machines offer great variety.

Both have games that are simply unique to that system. I mean I can't get a d/l'ble game like the awesome Shadow Complex or TrialsHD on the PS3, just as I can't get awesomeness like Wipeout HD, Burn Zombie Burn, SSDHD, and such on 360. Then there are the MGS's, Gears, Mass Effects, Halo's, Killzone's, Heavy Rains, Alan Wakes, Fables, Demon Souls......And one thing that 360 ONLY owners WILL NEVER BE ABLE to do is attack giant enemy crabs weak points for massive damage....that is merely fact that cannot be argued.

Advertising and Marketing... Look at Halo and Mass Effect. The money splashed out is phenominal. Advertise the games not the system. Look how well Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet and Clank were advertised last gen. Remember... " one of 30 weapons not suited for this world" That was a game that was well marketed and done well. See the game adverts imply the system it's on. So push the marketing of the exclusives. The multi plats will handle themselves. Let's hope that Sony ups their game this year. I hope GOW 3 doesn't fall victim to the same thing. Microsoft had made it clear... " we're bringing it!" let's see if Sony will just sit back. So far, IMO, that's all they've been doing. Even if their new ads are great and funny.

i know people like to say advertising makes a big difference and to a certain extent it does, but if your a true gamer you should damn well know what games are coming out now and for the foreseeable future.
