Paying for online service is ridic. No company is that stupid and cheap to charge for online.

Online should be free. In stead they should provide the users with enough content to buy. For, example, loads of PS1 games for 4 euros. People will pay for that.

I think $50-60 a year is not bad for XBL, since the service is good, no complaints here, but of course XBL could always be better and it will continue to improve. I think MS has been listening to the fans. That's key.

Well ya, know maybe the free online, Sony touted early, maybe was to distinguish themselves early-on from the XBL service, as anything being free, every gamer would jump on and claim, that is one of the PERKS vs XBL service, and the more reason to purchase a PS3.

(I have a gut, business sense feeling) Sony will eventually charge for PSN. In this day and age, with more gamers connecting online, this only means, a boatload of network resources have to be managed, and payed for somehow by somebody. especially if the network continues to grow. If the success of XBL continues to grow, especially when their IPtv service comes into play, I think Sony will wanna cash in.

Anyhow the PSN is not where it should be compared to XBL, then again it needs more time. In due time, we will see if they do charge, and we won't have the "well PSN is free and XBL is not, so there" comments, when reffering to the Pros and Cons.

It's really pointless analysing what these companies say about their competitors in public. It's all spin(and some of it not very good at that). What really matters is what they say behind closed doors in their boardrooms and via private emails that we never get to see. Putting words in their mouths doesn't really bring much to the debate either. Technically, he didn't actually insinuate that they were going to charge for PSN. You could I suppose make inferences if you were that way inclined, but technically he didn't say anything that we didn't already know. So what's the point of this? There isn't one.

This is the same post as, PlayStation Network : Bonus Round Episode 6: Part 2 that was posted last night on n4g.com. If you watch the bonus round you will hear everything that is in this post so this is a duplicate that is just trying to over hype the story/report on the same story.

This story is trying to say that Sony will charge for PSN but if you watch Bonus Round you will see that he never said that. As always he left that open and said that it is free now, the guy who was interviewed cannot legally say it will always be free. He doesn't have the authority and that was the question posed to him. So in short PSN is free Live isn't.

you do realize that the only games with dedicated servers on the PSN network ARE FREAKING FIRST PARTY GAMES! Third party for the most part aren't going to start up thier own servers so people can play Online. Sony's first party is the only one with dedicated servers

MS already cornered the hardcore online console market. I'd be willing to bet that the majority of PS3 online players also have a 360. These people will not pay for two subscriptions, only one. This way Sony doesn't force a choice on an unproven (Sony online) and a proven (LIVE).

Once Sony gets some credibility and history with their online system, then there will be some real pressure for MS to either drop the price of LIVE or Sony will be able to charge for theirs.

I don't know about things like little big planet and MMOs, but for FPS, LIVE is the place the hardcore goes - until they are shown greener pastures.

Geoff came out of nowhere with mods for PS3 and how developer"s" are choosing PS3 over Xbox 360 because Sony allows PC-developed mods. That can't be true. Developers must host their own servers when making online content for the PS3. There may be 1 developer that wants to do this, but the vast majority of developers flock to Xbox Live since they don't have to manage servers.

Finally, the PSN guy said that there are no PC-generated support for mods, yet. The PSN guy was only referring to Little Big Planet and other in-game generated content. So, I would like to know, which developer is allowing modding?

Lempel was right on the money when he said "Every Playstation owner should be treated as an Elite." Considering that there are only 3 million Gold subscription members, that means a good 40~45 million Xbox and Xbox 360 members aren't able to experience online play, and that's just ridiculous. Publishers and developers prefer Sony's free approach because in the end it not only generates more revenue for them, but establishes a larger game community where everyone is on the same level.

This ties into the bigger picture of Playstatation 3 where it has features that you might not necessarily need right now (Blu-ray movies, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi, SD/Compact Flash/Memory Stick slots, large HDD) but when you do it'll be ready to go without any additional fees or add-ons.

3. Send text, voice, video chat.

4 Any messaging can be done playing games. Both players dont have to be playing the same game.

5. Crazy amounts of 360 demos. XBLA Trials as well

6. Download the newest trailers. So many aswell from the gecko

7. Gamerscores can be compared with other gamers..also tells you what games they have ever played on the 360

8. MSN - wow... this thing is just too sweet.

9. Accounts are saved on servers. So you can upload your accounts from any X-box

10. X-Box live support features on games. Forza2's auctionhouse..saved car photo's can be uploaded through X-box Live...Halo3's replay shares...etc etc etc...... GRAW2 Clan Support...

Live already has a larger install base than the PS3 itself.
Live will also continue to grow... Ever faster than PSN.
Live will always push online features for games

Sony should make PSN a subscription.. like LIVE..

I dont mind paying 50 dollars for xbox live. Becuase my 360 was 200 dollars cheaper than the ps3, came with a headset, is a better service at this point, has better online games.

Maybe the playstation online service will be better next year with home or whatever, but right now, it is not.

Hey look at that! They are the same premise!

I can talk to people in either Live or in PSN. I can watch trailers and get demos on either. I can even, dare I say, play games offline as well!!!

Looking at others gamerscore is sweet but hardly a 50 dollar bonus. MSN is a neat little feature but I use yahoo sooooo. Movie downloads I don't see why it's a plus for the $50/yearly seeing that I still have to pay for them individualy. Getting your gamertag from online is an awesome feature along with talking with anyone anytime regarless of which game one is playing.

Basically they are very much alike but Live has a few more features that can seem like it's better. Yet in the end they do the very same thing and that is to play games online.

Let's face it, folks, MSFT is charging $4 per month (roughly). Now if you're playing Gears of War, Halo 2 (and 3 soon), Rainbow Six Vegas, downloading demos, videos, game trailers, Live Arcade trials and full versions, and you're doing this on a fairly regular basis, then $4 is a VERY SMALL PRICE to pay each month for the quality (and quantity) that you're getting.

PSN is more than 1 year behind. MSFT had Xbox Live going in the last generation. Would I like it to be free? Sure... but not if I had to lose some of the quality or quantity that has so far made it so successful.

By the way, MSFT, give us a web browser. Why IE can't be tacked onto Live is beyond me.

Its nice to hear peoples opinions and all, it really is, only, the fact of the matter is different people value different things, its just one of those things that are bound to happen. Sometimes you can convince people to change there opinion, most times you can't, unless they experience something for themselves. That being said, I value my four dollars, and if the brand which I also happen to value is offering something for free, than I would wrather take advantage of that. I'm sure that Xbox Live is superior, I don't doubt that. However I remember when PSN first came to be, Xbots were saying it would be craptastic, now its not the case. Sony is trying hard to close the gap between the two, and frankly I don't see how there can be anything wrong with that. The fact that you can even compare the two, says a lot.

You can either watch "Over the Air Television" ala..PSN service or you can Subscribe to "Cable Television"..ala XBL service.

There is not much comparisons as of now, XBL is just better, right now, for what you get. Since the service debuted, it has improved since then, just as Sony will eventually. I still think Sony will charge when the time is right. Strategies can change over time when, the Markets demands it, and I know networks, as they grow demand much more maintenance.

Having something free does not make it better. Of course if the justification is, you can't afford XBL, then I can understand. It's all in the "substance" that is offered or you can say the "meat and potatoes" of the service.

I myself would of not paid for PSN, if I knew early on, this is all I was getting. Free, is great in that sense. If Sony was to charge and when it gets better, I won't mind paying.

I can play games and also collect my favorite shows and watch the latest movies i can also [par-take in brand name sponsered contest. XBL/360 is much more then playing video games its a Home entertainment center/system.

$50 bucks a year is probably the cheapest bill for a service that you have. I doubt a company that doesn't charge any money can grow like the way XBL will, a company has to spend money to make money so it can set up a growing service that will always get better and start paying for itself. I wouldn't count on paying for XBL for too much longer with Big companies jumping on the XBL bandwagon, its only a matter of time before they start sponsering XBL so its free. Only people trying to justify PSN complain about $50 bucks a year knowing MS is building XBL and thats where the money we pay is going.

Sony should never "have" to charge for online, even if PSN becomes widely successful. Why? Advertising, plain and simple. Throw in a little ad here a little ad there. Home is a virtual space that I'm sure Sony will "rent" out to companies willing to pay.
There is also the possibility of selling items in Home like a Coke machine (or Pepsi), branded clothing, art, etc. Sony would be making a bit of cash on every item as well as the company allowing it to be sold.

People spend 5$ on cigarettes a day and also 3$+ on soda a day. Also 50$ a year is nothing compared a cell phone bill of 60$+ a month. I pay 50$ a year knowing that whatever game I go into I know I will beable to use all the features I say I can whenever I want. You can't on PS3.

I currently use both and I couldn't agree more with Covenant's comments. PSN isn't in the same universe as Xbox Live right now, and to say this is just ludicrous. The interface on PSN is nonexistent, while Xbox Live adds features regularly and maintains its service. While XBL may not be perfect, the PSN isn't close. Although it may become something one day, I honestly don't believe PSN will ever be up to XBL's level, considering the substantial head start Xbox Live has.

I am in no way biased towards either Sony or Microsoft, but I strongly feel that Sony is losing the next-gen (or current-gen?) battle, and I'm not sure if they'll catch up. I can only hope my $600 paperweight will soon be able to do more than play Blu-Ray discs...

I have both. I initially thought PSN is great for being free, then I compare to Xbox Live silver. Besides multiplayer, even a silver account trumps PSN right now. Comparing multiplayer over the two, I would say they are about equal. That is the only benefit of the PSN. If Sony starts to charge for their network and I am forced to choose only one, damn right it will be Xbox Live.

I'm happy with paying £40 a year for XBL, its an awesome online service which many other people don't mind paying for. It adds up to somewhere around £2.50 or something like that a month. Now that is cheap. As for PSN I can not say how good it is, I have not used it yet but I don't expect it to beat or even be on the same level as XBL. I did try the PS2 online service and man was that craptacular.

At least Sony is supporting PSN with more content and stuff being added, I see that XBL gets alot more content quicker than PSN I think.

The only unified servers are for 1st party Sony games. So third parties are pretty much on their own when it comes to online.

I'm pretty new here, but I get the sense that Bloodmask is anti-PS3. Last time I checked, developers had the choice of either running their own servers or using Sony's internal network. If Sony threw 3rd parties out into the cold, like he claims, devs would be giving them the finger. (obviously, we know this isn't the case) What is true is that Sony was way too slow in giving out online SDKs back around Launch, but they seem to have gotten their act together. I don't want to make any predictions, but I get the sense that the media is going to have a huge PSN vs. Xbox Live debate this fall.

why does the PSN have a demo game AND the full game separate? why cant you just download one an if you like it unlock the full game!!

why do it take so long to do an update on the PSN. it takes less than 1 minute to download an update you system from XBL!!

I've played RFOM online, it sucked. 40 man multiplayer doesn't mean jack squat if all it is...40 guys running around, nothing new. As far as GOW goes, dedicated servers would be nice, but the "lag" BS from droids is getting old. It takes a really sh*tty connection to be that bad and I rarely run into those. Its a game that requires strategy, as opposed to 40 tards running around in RFOM. And don't forget the constant extra content Epic gives us and GOW is still refreshing now 7 months after release. Thats why the PSN is sh*t compared to XBL.

We all care about the multiplayer aspect first, right. PSN uses dedicated servers for it's first party games and xbox live doesn't. That's why PSN has games with 40 players online lag free and xbox live gears of war can't have more than 8 players and still has lagggg. I could care less of all the features of both service, I just want the best multiplayer experiance. M$ should have dedicated servers for the top games since we are paying for it. PSN is the better one at the multiplayer games and xbox live on it's features.

Well IMO this is a no brainer.....say whatever you want, but PSN is not even close to XBL....but thats OK, its still free, give 'em time. In the end they will just copy what M$ is doing, and thats OK too, everybody in this industry copies stuff all the time...but it takes time and I don't care how you look at it eventually they're going to charge a fee.

This is crap news. we all know that Sony is working on their online and it's getting better week by week. M$ is doing the same thing. In the end both systems are going to be damn near identicle except for HOME which is taking a different road. But for the most part both services will offer the same thing.

Now that Jim Ryan is gone just need to remove Herman Hulst from his position! And maybe give Shuhei the position he deserved.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I already figured this, good lord imagine if Shuhei took over instead, would've been a platinum era 😩

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
