Why Do People Hate 3D?

PS3Blog.net writes:

Some gadgets are loved, many are ignored, but only a few manage to be truly hated and warrant a widespread emotional backlash.

First, it was blu-ray. Then, it was the PS3. Now, apparently, it is 3D. I have heard many completely valid reasons why people aren't interested in 3D, but usually, if you don't want a new gadget, you just ignore it and don't think about it. You don't get all worked up and angry about it.

Blaster_Master6008d ago

Because its gonna cost an arm and a leg to have it. Also, you need glasses and an 3-D tv set, unless you get the 3-D tv that has that screen so you dont have to use those glasses, but thats gonna probably cost an arm and a leg as well. Why do people hate 3-D is like asking why are fat people fat?

Raf1k16008d ago

Isn't the 3D TV set pretty much the reason for it costing an arm and a leg? No sense in saying it's expensive and then saying the reason for the expense is another reason for hating it.

MURKERR6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

first it was bluray...because sony was touting it,too bad now its mainstream
then it was ps3.......because sony was touting it,too bad,now its mainstream
now its 3d why?...because sony is touting it as the ps3 is fully equipped to cater for 3d while its 'american' made competitor isnt

just like NPD=world sales to the american media

simple really

sikbeta6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

What? Nobody Hate 3D, This Year Europe will Have 3D Ready for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa and is gonna be INSANE, Asia, specially Japan is going to be the same thing and for America, broadcasting Media will push 3D, EPIC WIN for everyone

Gamers FTW!!!

evrfighter6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

nobody hates 3d

It's just not a necessity. It won't give you an advantage in any way, shape, or form....

so I mean why buy it? There's a reason it never took off in pc gaming. If you were to check out the degree/comment factor in 3d articles. There's really not that much interest on the console side.

Baka-akaB6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

like said above , the World cup is going 3d ...
Just like with HD it will create an even bigger interest than the huge one already created by Avatar .

Whenever major sports events (at least in europe) was used alongside a new video tech , it started gaining steam .

3d is hardly hated , except by some forum dwellers , or people with little knowledge about it , sometimes even both and the same .

Some people are just obviously on the fence because of legimitate concerns and questions ... but hatred...

Foliage6008d ago

Quite simply, because the Western media are fanboys of American products. Since Sony is fronting 3d gaming, everyone will shun it... until of course Microsoft comes along with a much inferior version 5 years down the line and are crowned as massive innovators by the homer media.

In other words, it's Natal all over again.

Hanif-8766008d ago

We need 3D without glasses, that cost under $2000 and it will be mainstream :-)

Foliage6008d ago

You have that with head-tracking, and it is coming in GT5... still the North American media will shun it, because it's being made by Japanese people.

gaffyh6008d ago

Basically, because this is something that is majorly backed by Sony, it gets hate from the other side. 3D IS the next evolution in gaming, this gen it was motion control, next gen it is 3D, and Sony gets a head start because they are introducing it this generation..

evrfighter6008d ago

foliage, your thought process is flawed.

3d gaming is already available on a microsoft platform. It's not popular. Microsoft has accepted that.

But continue to believe that the west is out to get Japan if that's what helps you sleep at night.

Pekka6008d ago

I wouldn't say Blu-Ray or PS3 are mainstream. Sure, they could be mainstream in 5 years but they are still niche. DVD's still sell over 10 times more even in USA (in revenue, in unit sales difference is even bigger), in rest of world BR sales can't even reach 5% of the DVD sales. Most europeans buy PS3 to play games, not to watch Blu-Ray films. In half of the world PS3 hasn't even been released and Blu-Rays aren't sold unless you import them.

Heck, most of the households still don't have HDTV and even most HDTV owners don't have any HD device or watch HD transmissions. Many even use composite cables to plug PS3 to their HDTV. Meaning, they can't even see HD resolution even with HDTV.

Tony P6008d ago

People have always been traditionally sceptical of new technology.

It is not "hatred" to be sceptical of new tech, especially tech that's intended to be mass adopted. DVD, blu-ray, microwaves, HDTVs, home computers, electric cars... People were (and many still are) sceptical of all these.

Please, get over the "it only happens to Sony" attitude. Because it clearly doesn't.

Christopher6008d ago

I don't hate 3d, I just can't enjoy it since I'm legally blind in one eye. As long as I don't miss out on a good game because I can't see well out of both eyes, I'm fine. If I start missing out on some great games or suffer some nasty vertigo to try and enjoy them, I'll start complaining about 3d.

nycredude6008d ago

evrfghter & TonyP

You guys are unbelievable. Do you guys ever listen to yourself?

Serious, Sony has being doing what Natal is claiming to do for years on the Ps2 and on the Ps3. Now all of a sudden MS is touting Natal to be the next big thing?!

The reason why this didn't take off on Pc is because there wasn't that much support and MS didn't push it. Sony does a better job of pushing tech because that is what they do. MS will do what they do wait until Sony or someone else does it and then copy.

TheDudeAbides6008d ago

When someone says he hates any technology i.e. like 3D he's dumb stupid, there is no need to hate. And since I ignore stupid people I see no problem here.

evrfighter6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

"The reason why this didn't take off on Pc is because there wasn't that much support and MS didn't push it."

dude are you stupid?

http://www.nvidia.com/objec...

everything you need to know about 3d gaming on the pc INCLUDING a list of games that support it. TOO MUCH TO LIST HERE.

it is NOT popular, get that through your head. 3d is a phase that will die.

Natal and pseye are different.

3d gaming on the pc and 3d gaming on the console will be THE SAME.

edgeofblade6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

Look, I agree with the original poster. Really. If you don't like something, you should not buy it and hope it dies in the marketplace. That's how the free-market works. People usually waste their time getting hot and bothered about gimmicks or about being charged exorbitant prices. No one is forcing you...

The problem is the same issue people have with Halo. If you hype it enough, people think they have to have it. That alone can make a game/tv/gadget financially worth it. When hype overtakes common sense, the free-market system breaks down because the consumer is no longer doing their part in the equation. (Difference here is that I actually like Halo games, independent of their hype... but that's another flaming thread...)

I'm in the market for a nice, high-end, LED-backlit, 240Hz, NON-3D, LCD panel in the next two months. When that happens, I'm hoping 3D sets will have depressed the price of the model I want.

EDIT:

Oh dear god... I'm actually reading what you Sony-Koolaid drinkers are saying. Sony is taking ANOTHER huge risk by going so balls-out about 3D gaming. What if it busts? I'm sure that's the furthest thing from your mind since Sony is infallible and reality rearranges itself around what your God says will happen. Dammit, you cheerleaders piss me off.

And worse... every time someone raises a valid concern, you accuse them of being in Microsoft's pocket or anti-Sony. Get it straight. Sony loves you people. You are loyal zombies who would buy Smell-o-vision if Sony told you it was the next big thing. Really. Think about an 8-hour 3D game marathon and how much your head is going to hurt...

DaTruth6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

The reason it didn't take off on the PC is because 99% of people had no idea it existed! Only a few die-hard PC forum dwellers knew it existed and it is far from mass production(expensive).

I don't think you guys know the meaning of "pushing it". I never even knew what Invidia was before N4G! Neither does 99% of the world. 99% of the world know what Sony is! People probably thought walking around with music was a dumb idea too.

I have never seen an Invidia 3D product advertised on television or in any flier ANYWHERE!!! The problem is not that people are skeptical about it; The problem is that people show up in forums to express their disdain for 3D, like Bluray, when they should just be ignoring it

It is not in competition with anything, so nobody has any reason to hate it, but they do. This is not like Jewish people not celebrating Christmas and so they don't bother with it; This is more like the Grinch who wants to ruin it for others! I hate motion controls because every time a developer is spending his time producing casual crap, he is not spending it creating hardcore games and this is a threat to a beloved industry; So I will bash it! 3D is no threat to anything, you just have to not buy it!

Christopher6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

I do hope people realize that the reason why Sony is so focused on 3D media is because they make all of the products that would provide a 3D experience: TV, HD console, BD player, movie production/filming company.

I think they're being way out there just to make sure that if there is a profit to be had, they at least won't be playing catch-up with the technology.

@DaTruth: This post is primarily to combat those complaining about Sony focusing so much on it at all. As long as it doesn't adversely impact other development tasks, which it doesn't seem to be doing as such, there should be no complaints about Sony's focus on what others are also focusing on as well.

DaTruth6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

I honestly don't see your point!

Edit: reference to the second comment, not the first. I see your point there. (no pun intended)

Come to think of it, I have triple vision. Hope it won't affect this!

ThanatosDMC6008d ago

I say it's the mandatory lame glasses. If they fix that one gripe, i bet people would be more welcome to it.

Tony P6008d ago

@nycre: Uh, what was "unbelievable" about anything I said?

Lich1206008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

Well, if you're like me, 3d gives you a wicked headache. I havent really read anything about this but Im surprised no one has talked about it. I've seen 2 3d movies and I left the theater feeling like crap. It may have had something to do with the viewing angle, so maybe in my living room it won't have the same effect... Ill have to wait and see.

Bathyj6008d ago

I didnt read the article, only the headline but I'm going to have a guess.

Why do people hate 3D?
Why did people hate Betamax?
Why did people hate Minidisk?
What did people hate the Walkman?
(No one did at the time, but they will act like they did now.)
Why do people hate Pro Duo mermory sticks?
Why did people hate Bluray?

Oh, I didnt answer the question? I think I did.

Baka-akaB6008d ago

I hear people mentioning 3d gaming on pc ... it's mostly featured with nvidia card for the general public .
Of course that it aint catching like a fire , it needs to be universally supported .

It was pretty much the same with PhysX , as proprietary feature

Hell despite it's pretty obscure support , at least nvidia got 3d supported to various degree of quality for at least 100 games and not the least , like Arkham Asylum .

SilentNegotiator6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

The rest are just annoyed that they don't have a 3D compatible TV.

@ the "It's not needed" people
Quit whining about an optional feature. We're aware that we can live life without 3D, but no one is forcing you to use it. Just a nice optional feature.

Sitdown6008d ago

at all the people with the conspiracy theory that 3D is not liked because Sony backs it. Seriously, this is not an International East Coast/West Coast battle going on. One of the reasons people have not bought into 3D was because up until the recent release of Avatar, a lot of people had not experienced 3D in a tasteful manner; I mean geez, just look at the debacle of 3D that was at the cowboys stadium this year. In addition, there are a lot of questions that people need to have answered concerning 3D, that quiet frankly, are just not being answered right now. Not to mention, as someone stated above, not everybody is able to watch 3D without some kind of side effects. 3D is not hated, its just not being fully embraced yet........and with moves like My Bloody Valentine in 3D, its understandable why not..

A Cupcake for Gabe6008d ago

People hate 3D because Sony is leading it. Like how the PS Eye was a joke and NATAL was the greatest invention of 2009. They both do the same thing!

It's catch on...And 3D will become the new standard

morganfell6008d ago

That is the same tired argument used against HDTV. Every high end tech is expensive when it premieres and then prices drop rapidly. Soon you will ask why this wasn't implemented earlier.

Saaking6008d ago

Because Sony is pushing it with PS3.

randomwiz6008d ago

That type of 3D tech, and the 3D tech that tv manufacturers are pushing for now are two different types of 3d

we've had 3d for years, with the red and blue glasses, that gave corny effects.

this 3d tech allows for much more and capturing stuff in 3d with 3d cameras is much different than just added effects.

gaffyh6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

This comment section PROVES that because Sony is leading it, in comes the hate. You don't even see that amount of hate with Natal, which is still completely unproven, whereas 3D gaming HAS been proven on PC.

Yeah you can BS about price, and problems that people have watching 3D, but do you honestly believe that 3D won't evolve into something more bearable? Even for those sensitive people? The first 3D used Green/Red glasses, then Anaglyph Cyan/Red, now we get Stereoscopic glasses with no discernible color difference. Eventually, and there are already working prototypes that have been seen a year ago, they will make 3DTVs that don't require glasses.

This is the evolution of gaming, trying to push it two steps forward every time. Anyone that is complaining really needs to STFU, this could be one of the best things to ever happen to gaming, and makes it even more immersive.

What was that everyone was saying when Sony didn't have rumble in the Sixaxis controller? Rumble makes it more immersive blah blah blah, yet when something else comes along that is even more immersive, "oh no this is bs, I hate 3d, I want to live in 2D land with my NES."

F***ing hypocrites.

Lich1206008d ago

I know people on here like to feel like the world is against sony. And maybe that is partially true in the gaming sector. But you guys have to realize that, for one, anyone posting on these forums is not an average consumer so the notion you get from reading on here is not typical. And secondly, that Sony electronics are held to a high standard. Which means, people think very highly of Sony products.

badz1496008d ago

why don't who ever writes an article stop pretending to be the voice for all for once??

3D is awesome! yeah, it might cost an arm and a leg at the moment but who don't want to be a part of it in the future?? I would embrace who ever had the extra cash to go 3D is it's really worth it! these early adopters are the foundation of the technology becoming cheaper and mainstream later on! there are companies out there trying hard to move forward in terms of technology and 3D happens a to be very interesting area for us to enjoy!

so, personally I would love to see more what the 3D technology will offer! for the haters, go hate yourself and please stay at your corner of 'staying in the past'!

nogolis6008d ago

I don't hate it. I actually think the prospect is brilliant and cutting edge, I just think they need to do away with the 1950's style glasses as a means ot bring it to us. The TV's that are built in with it are going to cost 8 to 10 grand I'd venture to say. After just spending 3 grand on a Bravia last year... I probably won't be jumping into the mix of 3-d gaming for a bit.

Raf1k16008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

The glasses are required to show a different offset image to each eye creating the illusion of depth.
http://electronics.howstuff...

There are lenticular displays in development which try to create a 3D image by sending the required light waves to the viewers eyes but the problem with that is that you have to sit in a certain spot in front of the screen to get the desired effect.
http://electronics.howstuff...

edit: you're right that it'll cost a heck of a lot for a normal 3D TV let alone a lenticular one. The tech would need to advance enough for it to be able to use something like Natal or the PSEye to track where the user is and then somehow send the light waves in the right direction.
There's a long way to go before we see that kind of tech in our living rooms.

Majors6008d ago

These silly glasses type things only work for people who have good equal sight in both eyes and dont wear glasses for watching tv. I have a more dominant right eye since birth and whats classed as a "lazy" left eye, dont get the wrong idea though I have good sight and can see a car reg plate 100yds or so. But Ive never been able to actually see and sort of 3d image through 3d glasses ever. Jaws3d nope- assorted other 3d movies- nope, channel 4 3d season - nope instant headache etc etc. I can bet that there are many many others who will have these problems and for these poeple they will have to go without until a solution is found.
But SONY is the way forward the rest steal and follow

RealityCheck6008d ago

I also don't hate 3D, I actually like the additional effect... small amounts at a time. I have problems with long sittings.

I agree with nogolis that the glasses solution is kind of ancient. Yes I understand the technology progressed and they are faster now and such but the concept is ancient. Wearing glasses is ok for a movie theater outing from time to time but it will get old fast at home.

My opinion is that if the technology\price of 3D TV without glasses is not ready yet, then they shouldn't try to push 3D into the homes yet. I'll wait for the real "next gen" solution.

NateNater6008d ago

I have the exact same problem as him. Its a shame really. But yes I hope Sony or somebody finds a solution to this.

snaz276008d ago

check out audiostereoscopic tv's, you wont need to wear glasses and it doesnt matter where you sit, even it could have a different effect depending on where you sit, as if you sit on the far left and i sit on the far right we could both see slightly different images, say something behind a rock on the right but not the left, yes you can look around objects! how awesome is that!...

majors dont give up on 3d just yet mate, the tech you are talking about (red and blue glasses) is really old! the ALL NEW tech that sony and others are playing with is different...TOTALLY different... id suggest you go and see avatar at an IMAX cinema they use the new stereoscopic 3d... I think the reason people hate 3d is just that they dont understand it, and anything people dont understand they tend to hate, but a little research can tell you a lot, sky for instance is going to make a 3d channel, you think they are playing? sony amongst others are making 3d ready tvs! you think they are playing too? its gonna be big trust me.

snaz276008d ago

will it be expensive? YES! ofcourse it will its new tech for god sake! will it be expensive forever? NO! like everything else the price will come down! how many of you bought a hd tv 8-10 years ago? how many of you bought a dvd player first day? they were like £500 now they are £20, blu-ray players £400 quid! now they are £100... ps3 £600 now £250, do you see the trend here? Noone should ever moan about new developments, or new ideas... if noone did it where would we be? still living in caves? you will be better off waiting anyway as after a couple of years there will be lots of content to choose from. early ps3 adopters had a handful of games to play at launch, imagine if you got one first time tomorrow! how many games are there now?

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 6008d ago
NateNater6008d ago

Because it gives you major headaches and some people have eye problems where they can't even see 3D. Plus, at the moment, its a pretty expensive option.

blitz06236008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

and because Sony is patronizing it. It's the same case when they hated blu-ray.

talltony6008d ago

just like fanboys hating on eachothers consoles.

tehReaper6008d ago

I see some value in 3D Tvs, but I think for a lot of people, they just don't want to have to upgrade YET again. I don't think you should blame Sony.

SD was fine for normal consumers, then came along HD, and if you wanted a premium TV, HD was what you got.

Now that HDTVs are dropping in price, they introduce 3D so that people have to upgrade once again.

I'll eventually upgrade if 3D TVs become the norm, but a few months ago I got 40" Samsung. I don't really want to have to buy another TV at the current prices, just to see stuff in 3D.

Wizziokid6008d ago

thats the one thing i hate about 3D

xabmol6008d ago

I'm gonna wait till the 3D TVs without glasses become mainstream (cheap) before I upgrade. I'm happy with my 1080p Samsung.

ILLINOIS6008d ago

A lot of people hate on what they can't afford. Look at the PS3. Most couldn't afford it so they hate on it even though it is clearly the best. The best always cost the most. I am happy I am blessed to afford a 3d tv.

edgeofblade6008d ago

If everyone in America was like you, we would be a country mired in our own credit card debt.

...Oh wait, we are. We are a country positively filled with sh*t we can't afford. Houses, TV's, cars. And then there is this concept that we should buy into every single piece of consumer electronics crap that comes along.

I find it positively HILARIOUS that most of the Sony-lovers on N4G rag on Microsoft as a sign of the materialistic nature of Americans... and then turn around and buy whatever Sony tells you is hot because they are Japanese and some how better because of it.

Please, get over yourselves.

DaTruth6008d ago (Edited 6008d ago )

We are not the ones who hated motion controls yesterday with the Wii, but teh Natal appeared and suddenly we love it! We are the ones who never cared about PSeye and six axis(but it was included).

You are the motion control converts buying whatever MS tells you to buy! Do you find that HILARIOUS???
