Nvidia GF100 pulls 280W and is unmanufacturable

NVIDIA GF100 ARCHITECTURE is falling into the same trap that G200 did, shooting for the moon at the cost of the parts that pay the bills. Let's take a look at the architecture and how it stacks up in the market once again.
If you recall, last May, I said a few things about the chip then known as GT300, now called Fermi or GF100. The executive summary at the time was that GF100 was too big, too hot, and the wrong product design in almost all areas. Nvidia was shooting for a world-beating GPGPU chip, and it might have achieved that. Unfortunately for it, there isn't a sustainable market for such a beast. The costs of that GPGPU performance were raw GPU performance and manufacturability. While GPUs have a large and sustainable market for the time being and perhaps the foreseeable future, the GPGPU market is another story altogether. It is a risky management bet at best.

This single GPU card has the same TDP as my GTX 295 :|

OpenGL5969d ago

With that die size it will cost more to manufacture one GF100 than two 5870s.

likedamaster5969d ago

I told you that 295 is a beast.

This seals my intentions of getting 2 5970's for me and *ahem* my wife. I'm going ATI for my next cards... try and stop me!

Charmers5969d ago

I stopped reading the minute I saw the authors name Charlie Demerjian the guy is such an ATI fanboy it aint even funny. I would take whatever bull this guy is spouting with a massive barge pole.

gaffyh5969d ago

Ati/Nvidia fanboyism doesn't even make sense to me. They both do the same thing, and I've always found Nvidia cards use less power and I have less problems with them. Doesn't mean that I wouldn't get an ATI card if it was better than an Nvidia card.

Cliff Forster5969d ago

While I do know that Charlie tends to bash NVIDIA, lets look at the facts.

NVIDIA put a GPU up at a press event months ago, it was only a mock up borad, they are extraordinarily late to support DX11, they had nothing of real consequence at CES other than a couple of hands off tech demos, and a bunch of 3D stuff that will never work at home.

Any way you slice it, NVIDIA is not positioned to compete in the PC gaming market right now. Fermi is a manufacturing nightmare. If Intel could reduce Larabee to an SDK because it was running short on resources, what do you think will happen in the case of NVIDIA? NVIDIA's best product in its whole lineup is Tegra (the boxee box is going to be a winner for them), for what Tegra does it is pretty fantastic. Fermi is a future looking graphics product for corporate supercomputers, not for the at home PC gamer. Until NVIDIA shows us otherwise, why should we think they have any plans of continuing in the PC gaming market? I think they are going to concede that market to AMD and compete for graphics products in other sectors, and the only reason they don't come right out and say that is because they want to stall as many people from buying competing AMD products as possible.

Charmers5969d ago (Edited 5969d ago )

I don't get it either, I usually just buy the GPU that I feel best suits me. However good ole Charlie Demerjian's dog must have been run over by the Nvidia CEO, that is the only conclusion I can think of why he hates Nvidia so much.

Charlie is so accurate that a year ago he claimed Nvidia were going to kill off it's entire High end GPU range :-

"NVIDIA IS KILLING the GTX260, GTX275, and GTX285 with the GTX295 almost assured to follow as it (Nvidia: NVDA) abandons the high and mid range graphics card market. Due to a massive series of engineering failures, nearly all of the company's product line is financially under water, and mismanagement seems to be killing the company."

Take it from me this guy absolutely HATES Nvidia with a vengence. I don't know why he seems to despise Nvidia but anything he says about the company should be treated as complete bull. Just google his name and you will see he has a massive reputation as being an ATI stooge.

So let me see if I have this right Cliff Forster just because Nvidia hasn't shown anything for the PC gamer that tells us they are abandoning the PC gaming market ? The CEO woke up one morning and said "hey guys lets just give up our 63% share of the PC graphics card market that will be a cool idea".

I don't know what Nvidia are doing, I will check out their products when they release them. Unlike good ole Charlie and you who seems to have them dead and buried before we actually see anything.

Kakkoii5969d ago

@Cliff Forster: Don't know where you get your info but your completely wrong. They showed off a system with 3 working GF100's inside. The supersonic sled demo they showed off was only running on a single GF100. And they said the demo will be shipping with all cards.

This is just another fluff piece from Charlie to try and hurt Nvidia's chances.

Cliff Forster5969d ago

A year late and all they have to show is a non playable tech demo?

Excuse me if I am not impressed.

Serg5969d ago

Nvidia is in the exact same spot as Sony when they were about to release the PS3. Sorry but the similarities are just too big to ignore.

While ATI is sprinting to the top with DX11 and cheaper and faster (single core) cards, Nvidia is crawling, so it seems.

I would buy an ATI card, the hardware is pretty good, but the software... it's just plain horrible. The drivers suck so bad it's unbelievable. Installed the latest "legacy" drivers because my current card is old. Well, after updating, my preferred display resolution was gone... what the hell happened? Tried to play Quake Live the other day, in the middle of the match the screen turned black, I get kicked out of the game shortly after and... VPU recover, your driver was restored after a critical error.

I was using my beloved 8800GTS until it died last saturday and now, after many years of happy fragging with my Nvidia card, it's back to an ATI and I can see nothing has changed. The drivers are still the same pile of dump they have always been.

I had Nvidias and ATIs throughout the years and ATI was a pain in the ass, while I never had the slightest problems with my Nvidia cards, well, up until the moment my 8800GTS met an untimely death.

badz1495969d ago (Edited 5969d ago )

eventhough nVidia is very late to the DX11 party, ATI with their 5000 series cards are yet to dominate either with the problems in the driver which seems like they are not ready to be released yet and not to mention that there are still just a handful of games supporting DX11. I'm holding back with my HD4850 until there's a clear advantage on either side! - although I'm pretty sure ATI will have the advantage in terms of performance/price ratio like they did with their 4000 series cards!

I just posted this link somewhere else on N4G.com LOL

That's a lot of power for a single GPU. Bloody hell. I am praying this does not end up to be the same recipe as the 5800Ultra....

Well we all have to wait until March or April for this card to come out to see if it is the real thing or the 5800Ultra all over again

Cliff Forster5969d ago

I seriously doubt you are going to see any product this Spring.

NVIDIA bit off more than they could chew with this one.

hoops5969d ago

@gaff

Nvidia cards up until the 5xxx series from ATI would use less power as the ATI cards are running on smaller dies now.

MajestieBeast5969d ago

No pricing announced yet or benchmarks?

hoops5969d ago

None from independant sites (benchmarks)
No prices listed but one would assume the near $600 range for the high end card. I assume when its released ATI wil then drop its prices of the 5970 and 5870 the way it did for the 4890 when Nvidia released their GPU GTX275 http://www.techreport.com/a...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio25d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing25d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit25d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing25d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
