The presence of a story is more of a formality here. Bayonetta is a shape-shifting, sexually charged amnesiac witch who has awoken from a 500 year sleep and swiftly ends up on a bloody vengeance fuelled romp through a fictional city in Europe. Essentially, it's frankly ridiculous and serves no real purpose other than to justify the 12+ hours of carnage that follows.
The sheer depth in the games mechanics are masked by a superbly simple control scheme. An incredible range of combos spanning several different weapons mean you can easily pull off some impressive looking combos with mindless button mashing but also ensures you can spend hours crafting your favourite strings. There's also the option to equip a variety of accessories that enhance Bayonetta's natural powers and on top of that the inclusion of a magic gauge that rewards you with special executions, finisher and torture attacks. In a small stroke of genius, loading screens also double as empty practice arenas – almost encouraging you to master a new move at every break.

Creator of Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and Wonderful 101 comments on how they're all part of the same universe.
I could definitely see a Bayonetta/Dante game. Imagine them initially battling each other before eventually teaming up to take on the big baddies. Now, imagine what their child(ren) would be like.
Bayonetta and Dante I could see but even then with how their lore differs it's a hard sell. For the others...I just can't see it at all.
