BOINC Distributed Computing Now Optimized for PS3. 20x Faster Than PC.

Another distributed computing platform has been optimized for the PS3 architecture. BOINC, which is a platform that is used for multiple research projects has now been optimized for Cell processors and runs on Linux.

"PS3GRID is a volunteer computing project based on the PLAYSTATION3 and BOINC for full-atom molecular dynamics simulations and other scientific applications specially optimized for the Cell processor. Your contribution is very important because our Cell MD molecular dynamics software runs over an order of magnitude faster on the PLAYSTATION3 opening the way to innovative computational experiments."

On topic.

I submitted this story as it is of interest to those that use thier PS3 as a Linux machine. It is also of interest to those interested in optimized performance from Cell architecture. I'd say it passes both those test.

Actually they didn't.

It was a posting on an open forum that Deeko, VGOA and N4G then turned into a 'story' that was attributed back to SPG. You can see Deeko's public apology here: http://www.deeko.com/news/?...

I'm surprised it took BOINC so long to jump on the bandwagon, after the success with Folding@Home. That opens dozens of projects for those with Linux. Good news!

Sure it is fast but they compare PS3 with low-end PC. PC to which they compare PS3 is a single-core 2GHz AMD Opteron (check the site). Fastest PC prosessors are several times faster than that. Intel quadcore prosessors are probably over 10 times faster than that but then again those cost a fortune right now.

But this does show that PS3 is very fast at least with floating-point calculations which is what this project uses. But this was well known before. With integer calculations Cell isn't quite as fast. Don't know if that is a problem but still..

This still doesn't answer how powerful PS3 is with games. Only upcoming games can tell gaming performance.

Ps. I am PC-player right now but I will probably buy at least one of the consoles this year. Just not sure which one(s) yet.

I would think the reason they are base lining off of a Low End PC is because the PS3 is only $600 ($500 from SonyStyle). Thus...it is 20x faster than an average $600 PC.

some people need the glaringly obvious pointed out to them. If any manufacturer came out with a $600 PC that is 20 times faster than 90% of the market they would be in the news everynight and be sold out everywhere. This really highlights how much hate n envy there is for Sony out there.

oh and Pekka, I usually try not flame people but what you just said is just moronic. What you do you think makes up a floating point?? ever heard of a double word? let me simplify it a little for you.

you have 16 bit floats, 32 bit floats an so on. integers inherently take LESS bits to represent in binary form. Yet you want people to believe the PS3 is better at computing longer bit strings than it is shorter ones??

LMAO, leave what goes on under the hood to the experts OK?

You are actually right about that 600$ PC. That is why I am actually getting a console instead of new PC. I just wanted to tell which PC they are comparing it with. Sorry about that.

About that floating-point issue.. I actually know about those things because I have programmed some myself. Have you heard of FPU (floating-point unit)? In CPU:s floats are calculated with differently from integers and they are (of course) slower to calculate than integers. This is why game programmers normally transform floats to integers (it's easy) and calculate integers instead of floats. You can have even 1 kbit integers or longer if you have to. Cell is so fast so you may not need to do that any more.

This only means direct ports of games to PS3 don't work very well (with other issues as well) and programmers have to learn new ways to program games. Actually Cell is powerful prosessor but it just is much more complex than any other prosessor to date which is why games are coming so late.

ps. I would buy an PS3 if it actually had more games and I would have HD-TV.
