IGN Editorial: Blinded by Mario

While the platforming genre isn't gaming's feature presentation as it was back in the day, there were still a number of quality platformers released this year to contend with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, LittleBigPlanet PSP, and Trine were all a good time. But IGN submits that the best platformer of 2009 was one that received less attention than all of these titles (except maybe Trine): Twisted Pixel's 'Splosion Man. While New Super Mario Bros. Wii brought relatively nothing new to the table, 'Splosion Man was brilliant and original.

Mario started sucking after it started going 3D

3D gaming is the future! :)

Finally a company has the sales to figure out a sh!t load of us miss 2d games. I have never finished Mario 64 and I owned it for n64 and now DS. I beat NSMBwii in two weeks of 28 hours total playtime, getting all star coins.

EvilTwin5971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

Y'know what? IGN wins (yes, I'm including all of 'em, since b.s. like this consistently gets past their editorial board).

Yes, the plebs just don't know any better. The fact that the game sold well can't have anything to do with the fact that other people, y'know, enjoyed a style of game that hasn't seen a new release from Nintendo on a home console in decades.

It's never "laziness" when a publisher puts out yet another derivative shooter, but it's always lazy for Nintendo to put out a style of game they happen to be very skilled at creating.

It's never coasting to recycle racing games or sports franchises that get roster updates and little else each year, but it's always lazy for Nintendo to release a new 2D console platformer every 20 years or so.

You guys are completely justified in feeling a "lingering injustice" toward a game that sells better because it's an established IP instead of DLC.

In short, you're certainly entitled to make yourselves look like a collection of butt-hurt idiots.

And we're all entitled to the resulting schadenfreude of watching the agony of your fanboy ego get cracked over and over again.

This article is a joke. Check this:

"So if you haven't figured it out by now, I think New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a half-assed effort from a company that previously set a standard of excellence. Mario Galaxy was pretty amazing, right? That's the level of quality we should be demanding from Nintendo."

They like 3d mario and can't stop crying because we get one 2d mario in 18 years. Meanwhile SMG2 comes out later this year.

This article talks about NSMB being nothing new. Or having fewer levels. I see nothing about fun here. That's what all these people forgot. This game is more fun than SMG.

"The "expanded audience" that has made the Wii so successful doesn't care about what made Mario 64, The Ocarina of Time, and, more recently, Metroid Prime incredible. They're perfectly content just waving their arms around, so why should Nintendo provide anything more?"

IGN sucks. I like SNES Mario and Zelda far better than OOT and Mario 64. You don't wave your arms around much in new mario and even in mario 3 people would shake the controller to jump instinctively. Screw these people acting like kings of the nerds.

"They like 3d mario and can't stop crying because we get one 2d mario in 18 years. Meanwhile SMG2 comes out later this year."

18 years? I think you missed one of the main points of the article. NSMB:Wii is pretty much a DS port.

"You don't wave your arms around much in new mario and even in mario 3 people would shake the controller to jump instinctively. Screw these people acting like kings of the nerds."

Shaking the controller instinctively...

I think that's stretching/spinning it a bit much to justify motion controls in NSMB:Wii.

I like NSMB:Wii, i'm actually in the middle of playing it as we speak, but the article does bring up some good points and the game isn't without it's faults.

asdr3wsfas5971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

I forgot about the DS game but it isn't nearly as good (while I still enjoy it a lot). I bought a DS after the wii for it. So it's still 16 years? Regardless the handheld title is much less satisfying in terms of level design and (obviously) multiplayer.

This article is basically saying "Aero the Acrobat is a platformer, Mario is a platformer, so why is Mario better? Aero is cheaper!" New mario has extremely subtle level design. It's something that's been missing and the DS version hardly compares.

Did you play the roller coaster level? Like that's just a rehash. The ds game pales in complexity and strategy compared to the wii version.

EvilTwin5971d ago

I guess it comes down to clicks, bob. Go negative, get clicks.
http://traffic.alexa.com/gr...

As for NSMB...I don't think it was a copy of the DS version, hatch. At least not any more than the DS version was a copy of the games that came before it. It's a 2D Mario platformer. They have a look and a style of gameplay. If you want something different, go get Galaxy in 3D (which, admittedly, I like more).

hatchimatchi5971d ago

Come on, lets be honest here. NSMB:Wii is a good and fun game but it's basically just a revamped version of the DS game. There's nothing horribly wrong with that but nintendo could have done alot more with it. Specifically online play and better graphics. I'm not a graphics whore by any means but it goes back to my first point and something most outlets claim, it's a revamped version of a DS game.

As for online play, it would be awesome to have an online community with this game, the title has sold 10 million copies worldwide. Think of how cool it would be to have a speed run leader board or if it was compatible with wii speak. Playing across the country with some of your online buddies, the local 4 player mode is fun as can be and there's no reason why that same amount of fun wouldn't translate over to online play.

Its not a step backwards, or forwards. Its just comfortable with being mediocre. But the sad thing is, a lot of people are comfortable with that too.

pcz5971d ago

Thats what NSMB is.

It seems im not the only one who is not scared to 'admit' its crap.

Goodbye New Mario, I Won't Miss You

Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the first Mario 2D game in almost two decades without the New Super Mario art style, and it looks all the better for it

Am I missing something? It looks exactly the same, just higher resolution… Is this sarcasm?

specialguest1062d ago

Yes, you're not observant if you think it looks exactly the same. It immediately appeared different to me from the start. Mario's 3D model will always be the same, so not much difference there. However, the animation they've given the Super Mario Wonder makes it look more like a CGI Mario animation where as the New Mario Bros game looks more like typical video game animation movements

__SteakDeck__1061d ago

@specialguest Yeah those animations are insane.

FinalFantasyFanatic1062d ago

You really didn't notice the difference? It's really obvious, I was surprised when I first saw the trailer.

Asplundh1061d ago

"Am I missing something?"

Your glasses maybe?

Juancho511062d ago

This Mario game looks great, getting a switch for this and Mario RPG. CANT WAIT, TITS JACKED.

Profchaos1061d ago

Yeah I liked how much more emotion could be conveyed through the new style at first glance I didn't see much difference but then rewatching the trailer I'm seeing more and more animations that remind me of the Mario artwork from the manual of smb3

Outlawzz1061d ago

I hated the new super Mario bros Style. This new one seems a lot more expressive and less generic. I hope it's a good game

shinoff21831061d ago

I prefer the 2d Mario's. Me and my girl have played them all together and mario galaxy , Mario odyssey. The 2nd player option is extremely eh

89% Metacritic another stellar creative game.

SkatterBrain2521d ago (Edited 2521d ago )

Well if Little Big Planet went 3d with Dreams then I guess marios going 3D maker next, looking forward to that

King_Noctis2521d ago (Edited 2521d ago )

I think going forward it would be redundant to have another NSMB game on the Switch as the Mario Maker series can accomplish almost anything the NSMB series have level-wise.

jjb19812521d ago

Could you imagine a Mario 64 maker? Phenomenal.

Jin_Sakai2520d ago (Edited 2520d ago )

I’d rather have a Zelda Maker. The dungeon builder on the new upcoming Zelda: Links Awakening looks like a testing ground.

https://screenrant.com/link...

Aonuma hinted at the possibility of Chamber Dungeons evolving into a Zelda Maker game in an interview with Kotaku during E3. Reporter Jason Schreier asked Aonuma directly if a Zelda Maker was in the cards, to which Aonuma replied:

“I can’t predict the future, but if people do love this idea of arranging dungeons, I’ll keep that in mind going forward.”
