They decided to use the PS R1 R2/L1 L2 but decided to use the 360 d-pad -_-

I must say that the controller looks real slick. I am loving the recording/video buttons on the bottom which will totally rock. I love the concept of OnLive-- everything looks very futuristic and promising. Whether or not it will deliver is questionable but the guys that are making this are very educated and professional about their console (check out their University lecture).

So it seems like a typical controller, filled with a guide button and all that with an extra set of controls for watching/recording videos. Wonder if it will have motion control.

You know, it's funny: Sony Nintendo and MS are all moving towards motion control and OnLive seems to be ignoring that and offering digital distribution.

It's going to be one hell of a generation.

It's usually the case that once a console is released the foot race is dependent on the exclusives. But today there is so much more going on: motion control, firmware updates-- the internet alone adds so much possibilities, digital distribution, etc.

My big question: Is there a rumble/ds feature in the controller. That is a big selling point for me. Also the analogs look uncomfortably tall imo. But I do agree with above posters, it does look slick.

This still seems fishy.. I remember back at E3 they said they were goign to have a Beta in the summer and you go to their website to sign up for it. Well.... millions of people signed up for it and not one person got in??

The "MicroConsole", on"LIVE", the controller, it all seems a little fishy. Next thing we know 6 months before release M$ has "surprisingly" bought out the company and its idea and the system gets released as a M$ console. The only thought against it is the sleek/stylish/compact design that M$ isn't exactly known for.

@perjoss - Well from actually playing fighting games, I've found that the only game that works well with an arcade stick is Street Fighter. Nothing else feels right, and in that sense I prefer using the standard controller.

The controller looks very similar to one of the PS3 third party controller (the shape), but hopefully the d-pad is better than the 360 controller.

I wonder how comfortable it is. The hard edges on the sides make me worry that it might hurt after long periods of time. I'm also curious whether the triggers are just buttons (cuz they look more like trigger shaped buttons than analogue) or analogue triggers.

If a bigger game-related company buys the rights, it wouldn't be a "conspiracy," it would be a business transaction. I wouldn't be surprised if someone bigger than OnLive backs their product in the end - it may be one of the only ways for this to not go the way of the 3DO. Could be MS, could be Sony, could be Sega (lol), who knows?

However, the controller sure looks familiar, and it seems like the amount of effort and money to make this console relevant will run it into the ground before they can innovate. PS4 and Xbox(720?) will no doubt venture beyond just their previous controllers somehow, and this one just seems like a mashup.

I have a question!
Theoretically speaking... if this gen, and next-gen consoles were to die out due to OnLive's total domination, wont gaming stores also die out? If that happens, where are we going to buy our games that include peripherals like Rock Band, GH, DJ Hero etc type games, and wont that mean control systems wont innovate because the majority of the public will have a standard controller meaning that no developer would want to create games for a niche market. Whats going to happen to innovative controllers? Can they bring out an OnLive 2... considering they update the computers internally which enables you to play top of the range games, I dont believe they can, because nobody would need to buy it.

i really cannot see this thing working or being practical, look at the state of the ISP services right now, im paying $60/month for 100gigs at 10/1mbit, and every gig i go over that 100 gigs i have to pay $2, now when this is released what is stopping the ISPs from making tighter restrictions on bandwidth, giving you only 50 gigs for $60 a month because they want to milk every cent you have.

on top of that no one in the house can be surfing the web or downloading anything while you are playing, this is the drawbacks of this, it just wont work in the long run, this is well before its time, until ISPs can remove all the limits of their services, have higher bandwidth and speeds, this just wont work

now for all the people who will probably disagree with the bandwidth part, think of it this way, you can play 24/7 on a console or computer because you have the majority of the game on hard copy at your house, it wont take very much bandwidth, but with this service you will be downloading the game aswell as sending and receiving data nonstop, everythign will have to be downloaded in realtime, thats like downloading a dvd every day if you were to play it for 8 hours a day, that really really adds up and will take an even bigger toll on your wallet

i dont know the dimensions but it looks like a rather large controller and i just want them to stay away from the aspect of the first xbox's big ass controller.

I also like my triggers for fps :/

Go to their website, Onlive will be able to be accessed from any computer using kb/m with a simple browser plug-in and if you want to play without a computer on your TV you just get the micro-console. All the games stay on the servers you never download or buy any physical game. Seems you pay to play and you buy the games virtually. Basically the games are supposed to be streamed in real time thus the minimum internet connections of 1.5Mbps for standard definition and 5Mbps for HD 720p60. So yes Onlive will be kb/m friendly.

You need to upgrade to FIOS I pay $40/month for 20Mbps DL and 10Mbps UL. You don't need it this high but both my wife and I play and sometimes the kid is on the computer so for me it helps.

Problem is, Fios isn't in all areas yet. I have been waiting for it to come into my area for years now. Nothing. I mean, I still have cable modem, so it runs pretty good, but fios package is just so much more.

The question you should be asking is, whats with the 'L I V E' buttons that replace the current face buttons (A,B,X,Y X,square,triangle,circle) That seems like a horrible choice.

Wow, think outside the box much? Why didn't Xbox use shapes instead on the letters? Why, because you distinguish yourself apart from the others. R2 ans L2 just means Left and Right. It's not taking anything from the PS controller. Xbox has LT(Left Trigger) or LB(Left Button). This is not copyright infringement. If they went further, expect a lawsuit. Why did Sony PS3 steal Microsoft's design to access the dashboard with a button on the middle of the console and created wannabe triggers instead of keeping the flaps? How often do you use the six-axis feature in the controller that was inspired by the Wii? We can do this all day. They borrowed a good idea because it works for everyone.

I don't think the countrys broadband connection is good enough for anything like this. I have Virgin broadband 50 meg and still have issues with it.

It's not just your internet speed which is a factor here, its the ping you have to the server, i remember either reading an article or watching a video on it discussing the optimal ping to use this service fluently. If you ping to the server and anything beyond 80ms imo, you will notice a massive delay between your actions with the controller and that of the reponse for the game.

Connection speed isnt the only issue with this service.

The 360 has the strongest software sales and the highest attach rate, as well as the premier online service of this gen. The Wii has the strongest hardware sales and a unique control interface. The PS3 has... uh... hmm... let's see here... umm... well, it plays Blu-Ray movies!

So if OnLive failed harder than the 360, it would probably still be failing much less hard than the PS3. The PS3's been in 3rd all this time. We almost take it for granted now. And to think it could soon be bumped down to 4th place. That's quite an interesting prospect.

It's an online based console. It's almost the future of gaming just as digital distribution is to game buyers. It's membership based and the games are on a server. I see this working since broadband is increasing everyday, but we'll see how people respond to it. I think it all comes down to pricing. Looks sleek, sports a 360-style controller, and doesn't take up space. Just a big modem with USB and Ethernet ports

OnLive just cant work using todays current state of broadband speed. Maybe in about 4 years, but atm, no. & what if your internet goes down, it will be useless. I mean if it does work itll be amazing, but 5mb/s just for 720p? Not good enough.

Go to their site it is not digital distribution, the games are streamed in thus the need for the higher broadband speeds of 1.5Mbps for sdtv and 5.0Mbps for 720p60. You at no point are in possession of any software or program of a game. Everything is played and stored on the servers. Big difference compared to digital distribution where you buy and download a program to the HDD on your computer, handheld, or console.

Beside they have marketing similar to MS, as in to manipulate people.
Look at the controller.
The triangle button is an I, the square button is a L, the cicle button is a V and the X button is an E. In between L and V is an O. Therefore you can read it as I LOVE as in I love OnLive...Nice try @ssholes but Shane Kim is on to you mother fúckers.

I think one of the main factor that will tilt it in one direction or the other is pricing.

If it is priced low (unlimited membership) then people might be willing to give it a chance and put up with technical difficulties as the new service gets up and running on a large scale.

If it is priced similar to buying retail games (like MS with games on demand or Sony with full PSN\PSP games), then it will quickly get dismissed.

Copy much? That controller is not imaginative nor does it scream originality. They took ideas from both controllers blatantly. Labeling of the PS controller, but the placement of buttons, the look, and the ergonomically correctness of the 360 controller have all been copied. Hopefully they did this because they weren't trying to change the way players played the games and kept what was familiar to gamers. Playstation triggers are horrible and the only people that like them are PS enthusiasts, so I can see why they wouldn't use that layout.

People please understand that OnLive is NOT digital distribution. PSP GO was DD ONLY. This is streaming games that are on their servers. You pay a monthly subscription so you can play when you want and whatever you want. I want to know how publishers are going to accept this. Royalties cant compensate the lost sales

It's a MicroConsole hooked up to your tv and connected online via an ethernet cable.

Onlive is a service where you use the MicroConsole to basically stream games without lag from their servers hundreds of miles away.

That means no downloading games or downloading game updates, no more physical copies of games..everything is digital.

The only problem with Onlive is that not everyone has a great internet connection, which could be the reason why it might fail. You need 1.5mb to play in SD and around 5.mb to play in HD.

Personally I don't like the idea, I love buying a physical copy of something, Onlive would make me think I don't actually own any games.

Also, if their servers go down then everyone is screwed...there are just too many things that could go wrong.

The thing I dont like about it is that if your internet connection goes down you can't play anything. At least with DVD/Blu-ray your not relying on your internet to play. And 5mbps for hi-def, not that many people have connection so high. Mine is only around 2.5mbps. I don't own a hi-def tv to only play sd games.

So what games will OnLive get? Just multiplatform titles? Or will there be games just for OnLive? And will the microconsole actually be 'powering and processing' the game like a PS3 or 360, or will it just stream it? A lot of questions XD Will be thankful if anyone can answer them.

All processing is done in the computing cloud and then streamed to you. The hardware is nothing more than an interface, most likely to decompress the audio, video and control streams.

To all the people saying this will fail. While this particular product may fail, there is no way in the long run this idea will fail. Cloud computing makes a ton of sense, especially for gaming. That isn't to say dedicated machines will go away, I think both will coexist for a long time.

What people don't understand is that just because an idea like this fails, it doesn't mean a great deal is not learned from attempting to implement it. Like I said above, this particular iteration may not be a hit but I can't see how in the future that cloud computing will not be very much more prevalent.

I've been gaming since the 80's--pretty much since I was capable of holding a controller. That said, it's hard to imagine if this system will blow people away. The controller, while it borrows from both the 360 and Playstation brands, seems clumsy and awkward. Most people like to have physical copies of games, which this service does not offer. What about if it is down due to maintenance? There is a multitude of things that could go wrong. What about lag? So many questions. And contrary to the claim it will be available Winter of 2009, I have to ask how much something like this would be. It's all very good in theory, but can they pull it off? We've seen Digital Only Content on the GO, and let's be honest--even as a hardcore PS3 owner, I myself know--sales have not been stellar.

OnLive to me, is much like when I first heard of the Cd-playing capabilities of the PSX. It's a taste of the technology stepping forward.

Anyone not sure about not owning the physical media can just take a look at Steam, or any other service that offers downloadable games for real money. They're THRIVING.

I love to own physical media, don't get me wrong. But this is where gaming is going. It's how everything has been going. I mean look at the 360. What has it added aside from SERVICES? Not a hell of a lot in terms of physical media. Mind you, the software-for-cash availble for it IS a lot, staggering really. But it's all done through software. OnLive is just an extension of that model.

you can stream onlive to the box with a controller connected, or stream it to a cell phone i heard, but the streams are coming from very powerfull pc systems and servers that run the game and stream them to you so no matter what your playing onlive from the graphics and streams are coming from a pc. the trouble with it is lag if gaming goes this way im going to miss building my pc's and onlive will have so much control over content think about how many games will not have mods for it and how everything you add to the game will prolly cost money in the future. Onlive= another way to try to control gaming just as in the past with consoles all they are is money machines pc market is harder to control thats why you see devs and corps shy away from pc gaming (although it is the best for gamers)
