Personally I think Sony should just use there next gen MSXC cards. having lots of capacity is nice but if you don't have fast access to it then who cares. Optical media just can't meet the needs of gaming. Sure it's got capacity but no speed. Time to move on from a what is it now 20 year old tech?

I don't think anything should be drastically changed, just minor tweaks and upgrades is all gamers need at this moment. Blu Ray is still maturing/growing.

Prices would continue to go down and the speed of a disk will never match it, and with the flexibility in size, developers who's games would be smaller could take advantage of cheaper cards that don't have as much storage.

The format war just ended in 08. It would be way to soon to have another format already coming. People wont want to get another format for at least another 7-9 years.

I don't storage will be the issue the next time round. It will be loading times. The next Gen will already have more memory, so I see a mandatory install to at least a HDD will be a must. The days optical disc loading will be over. Optical disks simple cannot deliver the read speeds of HDDs let alone SSDs

Imagine a consle with 3 Gigs. IF all data transferred from storagee was sequential, an decent SSD (OCZ vertex) would take 15 seconds, A western Digital caviar black 7200 RPM around 45 seconds; 1x Bl-ray 12 minutes or 3 minutes for the most expensive device eg 16x.

As long as it doesn't end up costing $600 I don't mind, the space might be good for the games. But honestly I haven't watched a single blue-ray movie on my PS3 yet and I'll probably continue to watch streamed or downloaded movies only.

Digital distribution won't come to the fore until there is a global standard with broadband- which is not into the foreseeable future. RIght now, the reality is only a few countries have the broadband infrastructure and regulatory environment to allow digital distribution to become possible. No company would limit their market reach by opting for digital distribution only. That's why the PSPGo does not replace the PSP-3000 etc.

I'm sure they are ALWAYS working on a new disc format. I wouldn't be surprised if they were working on several. I supposed it will depend on when PS4 comes around, but I'd think that Blu-Ray could probably get the job done for quite some years yet - especially if they get better at multilayer.

Sony will stick to blu ray! It will be faster and possibly have the capablity of using larger disc capicity.

Sony will not try a new format next round due to cost that hurt them initially this gen. With the exception of the hardcore most people spoke put and refused to pay a high price point for a machine that was well worth the price to me.

Anyways i think sony will use blu ray again but this time sony will be able to introduce the ps4 @ a much lower launch price do to this option.

I am all for them making a new Format but really? so they think they can just usher in a new format with every new ps system? i mean really? I think the market has just sort of came around to blu-ray, gaming and movies wise. No one wants to change formats every 5 years. I also think that 3D is too soon. We just went from LCD to LED, now 3D tvs. Here we see Supply infuencing demand. Just the extent of this influence is yet to be seen with this new tech.

doesn't surprise me at all considering how much they've put into making blu-ray and it's pretty future proof too. i can't imagine dvd being in the next xbox system, they'll have to either bite the bullet and put blu-ray in or have a hd-dvd disc for it. and people can't and won't sit around waiting for a 50gb game to download, that's rediculous.

I'm all for pushing the envelope on technology...but this time around they really need full backwards compatability for people to buy into yet another format upgrade. We don't want to feel like we wasted a lot of money buying into the move from DVD to Blu Ray.

I was in 100% behind Sony when the put blu-ray into the PS3. I knew it would make it more expensive, but think of what developers could do with 25 gb. However, because of the global markets crashing, I think they should stick to blu-ray. I think maybe 3 games have used dual layer BD and I am not at all opposed to disc swaps. Maybe in 3 years we'll have a different view, but as of now? I think they should stick to blu-ray and make use of multi-layered discs. Strick a balance between dual, triple or quadrupled layered discs and disc swaps.

i think sony made a smart move on the ps3 pushing for a new media device. the dvd was getting maxed out to easily. but i think if they changed formats on the next system again would really hurt them. they can keep the price of the ps4 cheaper if they just make a faster bluray then they could reserching a new media format. also every developer would have to buy into the new tech again. they would all need new burners that would cost them a ton of money. bluray has alot of room to expand.

Dream on, Bluray is the final physical format, Sony has invested a lot of money on this and Bluray has been a huge success ever since, do you really think Sony would switch to another format especially with its new 3DBluray functionality.

The intervew mentions nothing of a new disc format, I think the writer is more sensational than actual. Crafty title, but the blu ray will be here for the long haul, as it is still in its kiddy years. It's stories like this that make people feel like Sony is out of their minds, when in reality its the people who write these stories that are out of their minds. Pay attention people, I read a similar article but with a different more realistic title,like "Blu ray will be used for PS4." This person just wants more hits on his site or page or whatever. I reckon they'll just improve on the storage space of Bluray, I see they are at about 33gb per layer, maybe they can squeeze more out, or add more layers. I donno, not too c lued up on the stuff. I hardly think Bluray will be obsolete by then so that a new optical media will need 2 be introduced.

Making a new storage solution would be rather costly I imagine, and unless everyone else (studios e.c.t.) jump on board, since the shift to Bluray is still in it's infancy, I don't see it happeneing

I really don't think we'll need a new disc format anytime soon. Blu-Ray is pretty damn good.

Why? So it can struggle to get name recognition and be terribly expensive just like what happend with Blu-ray? Doubt it. Sony has learned theyre lessons of creating new formats for the hell of it. And now that Blu-ray is expanding its storage space theres no need for something that will do the same thing(more space). And if not, its gonna be the launch of the PS3 all over again. Sony cant take the chance of having the most expensive console again, and a new optical format will cause it too be.

There will probably be a new CPU for the PS4 considering the cell is no longer being made and if Holographic Versatile Disc is added then we can surely expect the PS4 to launch at an extremely high price. It will then probably have the same issue PS3 had. It's exposing new technology to the mainstream and it's at a high price.

But, this will all be ok if Sony reaches out to developers to show them what the PS4 is capable of and how to develop for it.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
