Looks like GameStop hate all started around 2005-2006. Coincidentally, this is the same time that GS developed US=World disease. Just another reason why I have a Best Buy silver membership.

i like Gamestop/EB only for the exclusive stuff they get, like pre-order goodies or whatever.

I always have the best experiences at small, Mom and Pop video game stores. Buying games at GameStop and Walmart simply isn't fun to do. Best Buy is slightly better, but I still have no sympathy for multinational corporations. Small businesses tend to have surprisingly good deals as well.

I remember 5 years ago, I loved Gamestop because they were real gamers. EB, Funcoland, Rhino, EBX, Babbage's etc usually had a fat marketing degree owning, college douche behind the counter reading me a review off the computer when I ask about a game. So I went to the small hole in the wall that was Gamestop. Fast Fwd 5 years later. Gamestop name owns 75% of all video game stores in America. They monopolize the market and rip everyone off daily. They went from the best to the worst in a half a decade.

i don't think they're evil, but they can be some grade A dumb f*cks sometimes. the one i go to has the most obnoxious employee i've ever seen. he talks crap about the game you're going to purchase if he doesn't like it and if you argue with him, he'll just talk forever until he finally gives up or you buy the damn game. i was trying to get infamous, but he said it sucked and that i should get batman instead, so i did it because i knew what was going to happen if i didn't comply. luckily, i was going to get the game eventually anyways. infamous will just have to wait.

he also pissed me off when a guy in front of me was asking whether he should get KZ2 or MW2, and the guy said something like you had to be brain dead to get KZ2.

i'm just glad i don't always see him since i rarely go to GS.

Lots of people would love to get some REAL value out of their recently purchased games...

They'll buy a game back from you for 3 dollars and put it on the shelf for 30.

Why not give you 10 of 15 for it?? We'd trade MUCH more often if that were the case.

If they reformed their whole trade-in value system i think we'd see some positive results all around.

Other than a few incidents, I've always found GS (well "EB Games" here in Canada) rather pleasant and easy to deal with. Most of their trade in values are faily high compared to pawn shops and you can often get various specials on games and/ or hardware. Sure there's the occasional idiot fanboy working behind the counter, but I find them to be the exception, not the rule.

The people who work there aside, I don't get why there's so much animosity towards the company itself. They're a business, they're in it to make money. It's a consumer > retailer relationship. Nothing more. Walmart isn't any better, and if you want to talk in the scope of corporate responsibility and malfeasance, they're worse.

you had a few incidents , other had plenty . To each their experiences .

I can't say , i'll get over their tentatives to resell used games as new , and it's hardly an isolated cases , judging by the constant remarks about it ... among many other weird things .

Where I live GS ( I know 3 of them ) are full of fanboys working there who doesn' t have enough knowledge ( Example: they could easily compare Mirror' s Edge with Modern Warfare ... ).

Two of the guys that works there have been admonisced by their boss many times because they wants to sell only a kind of console and misspeaks everytime about the competition to the costumers.

You pay 70 Euros for a game, after a week ( or less ) they give you 30 Euros to get it back and after 10 minutes the game is on sale again for 54/60 ... I don' t know how Walmart works because here there isn' t their shops, but I think this is not fair.

AND the used market is ruinig the videogame market.

So why should I give my money to THIS kind of service?

This seems to be enough to me to avoid always GS. GS can go to hell.

PS: I hope I made myself understood because I know my English is pretty bad.

But the main problem is that GS is not advantageous for the videogame industry ( used games are a pain for developers ), I know not everyone has enough money to buy all the new games he wants though.

Since I can afford to buy all the new games I want I will boycott GS & suchlike forever. I deeply love videogames ( I think some of them are truly art ) and I will do all I can in order to protect the sane part of this world ( expecially supporting good developers studios ).

things I hate about gamestop:

* it needs a cosmetic update. it looks so plain and tired.
* useless/nerdy employees. sometimes i would rather go to wal-mart and talk to some non-electronic savvy person to buy my games.
* all their specials and discounts are for used games only.
* if you do get a used game, you're risking the case being in terrible condition or worse yet, you get a generic case with some bullshit comic cover.
* 5 bucks off for used games? games that could be in bad condition or not worth the 55 bucks? i understand it's a business, but GS can still profit if they could at least take 10 dollars off the MSRP for used titles.
*sometimes they have a bad selection. couldn't believe there was only one copy NEW for demon's souls.
* terrible trade-in values. i've traded in some games that cost me 20 bucks when i originally bought it from GS and they turn around and only give me 99 cents for trade-in credit. goozex is the only place i trade games now.
* did i mention useless/nerdy employees? sometimes they're cool and can hook you up, sometimes you couldn't ask them the time because they're so clueless.

The only time I go to GS is to use a gift card someone gave me. Their deals there are lame anyway. Selling used games for $5 cheaper than the new version? Please, give me a break.

GS is only bad at selling "new" games, especially since they are opened already.... anyways i buy used games because its a bargain, and since when is a video game disc a bigger commodity than a book, cd, etc. Its not people, so get over it.

It is kinda greedy to pay $24 for a new release then sell it for $54.99. It would be one thing if they had a tiered rewards program; say, after trading in xxx amount of games your credit went up or something. Maybe offer a free used game for every 5 you sell them. Something...

I am a consumer, no doubt about it and it would be nice if comanies rewarded loyalty.

Agreed. GameStop makes over 50% profit from the sale of each used game, which is virtually unheard of in the consumer electronics world. It's not a noble practice.

I stopped going to GS when I went to buy a game and they reached in the drawer and pulled out the DVD and put it in a case. I said no thanks and left. From then on I have been buying from Target. I don't know about you but once it is opened that to me is considered used. I don't know how they get away with it....

They`re not HORRIBLE, but they do have some shady practices such as:
-Selling used games as new
-Slapping stickers all over the case, including the artwork itself
-Putting games in some crappy black dvd case
-try to shove pre-order and EDGE card deals down your throat

if i hate one thing with gamestop , it's that trend with pre-order dlc . It's one thing to have them , but to only enforce them with a set brand of shop is just annoying .

We already bother preorder stuff that isnt even going to sell out , and is often shipped late ... we dont need that kind of crappy deal to boot .

I also dont like , but it's not exclusive to GS , but every annoying and bad salesman , being not so subtely told that my tastes arent good , and that instead of Unknown and obscure game XX , i should follow the herd and buy they crap of duty or Madden of the year .

I dont need advice when not asking , and when you do ask them , it's not like they always had something useful to say , or even knew what they were talking about .

Again it's not exclusive to GS , but i've never seen as many douches in other stores .

Ya i am not too happy with gamestop.

Recently i went in to do some price checking.

NHL 10 was released 5 months ago.
They were selling NHL10 new for $69.
They were selling NHL10 used for $64.
Trade in value is $17.

Anyone else see an issue with this?

yea the used game should be sold at least 20% cheaper than the "new" game. trade in value is fine, you can take your used copy elsewer and get a better deal for a trade in.

thats why i always rely on play.com or other internet websites far cheaper and guarantee release date delivery and i get the odd game a few days early

They should get a disk checker that checks the integrity of discs being traded in. What this would do, is allow them to give more for a game that is in great condition, and less if it is in poor condition. In addition to that, if someone does not want to wait for their discs to be checked, there should be a flat rate.

That way, the people that take really good care of their game discs, don't get screwed out of so much money when they trade their games in. If you are very careless with your game discs, then you don't deserve crap for a trade in.

The fanboy crap there really doesn't bother me too much, as this site has some of the worst fanboys in the world. So that doesn't deter me from shopping there.

I do shop at Gamestop for used games. I buy all my new games from Wal-Mart as I get a discount on them. For the used price at GS/EB, I get a brand new game and I am guaranteed not to get one that has been opened already and then sold as new. I have had that happen to me a few times, them aholes trying to give me a used game as new. Those games that they sell like that have in fact been used as the employees get to take them home and try them out. Maybe not all of the ones in the drawer with the empty case on the shelf, but some of them are in fact used and should be sold as such.

The Gamestop down the street sell new title used games for $44-$49..even if you go on to their website..it's the same. also you can find some really good bargains there..I got a whole lot of movies for my PSP for like $3-$5 each..good effing movies to. but I don't trade my games in anymore I sell or trade on craigslist.

GAMESTOP IS EVIL.

They contribute nothing to the gaming industry. Infact they take profits from so many developers promoting used game sales and ripping off kids.

Game Stops used games sales, kill the longevity of a ton of games.

Gamescore obsessed kids race to rip themselves off selling their games to chase the next set of achievements (achievements which anyone can hack in minutes, even a cave man can do it.)

Ban used games sales, put the money back in developers hands, they are the key to successful game releases.

I work at GameStop.

They do have to keep a business going.

However, I've priced it all. The profits they're making off of customers is much more than they need to be making. A LOT more!

Hopefully, places like Goozex.com and Amazon will be making them rethink their strategies soon.

....however, they do not implement force in their quest for you to turn in your games that you spent a lot of cash on.

While they do offer some decent trade-in deals, in the end it's your decision to bring in your game or not, and trust me, when I was younger the lure of new games for almost free quickly loosened my grasp on my game collection, and it was nothing short of decimated until a couple years ago.

I decided that waiting for a new game to drop in price is the way to go, as I had a nasty habit of trading in games that I hadn't even finished yet in order to buy the next game I had been salivating about.

But as far as their employees go, yeah, they mostly leave something to be desired. Few and far between are some good kids who simply know their stuff and put it to good use, but the majority of them are ass-faces who are simply lying in wait to criticize your choice of game you're purchasing. Like I was put on this earth to buy the game YOU want me to buy, or for the console YOU want me to buy it for.

And the girls that work there...ugh. I don't know about any of you, but the girls in my area GameStops seem to be a little full of themselves. If I'm looking at them to try and get their attention to ring up my purchase, they think instantly that I'm checking them out and start sneering at me, like being a Gamer Girl makes you some rare, coveted piece of ass. Trust me, it doesn't, so don't act like it.

And their boyfriends....just wow. Once again this may only be in my area but damn these guys are just an exotic form of loserdom. These girl's boyfriends hang out in the store all day and act like they belong to some special club of jobless wonders (by choice) who happen to date the "hot" (and I use this term loosely) girl at the game store.

So yeah, in terms of general evilness, GS scores about an 8 out of 10.

Basically they play my game before i get to, and im not talking about just buying the game before me because they get lauch day dibs, but more along the lines as they get to rent out new games and sell them to you as if they were new. So really the new game that you are purchase is really a "kinda" new game. Ever wonder why there was no wraping or how a new disc doesnt work when you buy it, that is certaintly one of the reasons.
