Pirates claim PS3 hack success

Hackers claim to have found way to play copied software on Sony's previously impervious console

With piracy rife in the Wii, Xbox 360, DS and PSP markets, the PS3 has to date proved the only current-gen machine to successfully fend off the hackers (possibly hindering its hardware sales in the process?) – but it seems that things could be about to change.

DMason5972d ago

Who would go through all that trouble to pirate a PS3 game? Its expensive also. You'd need a bluray burner, and blurays, which is costly. On top of that, you'd need to download 25 gigs of data. I buy maybe 5 PS3 games a year, no need for piracy.

thorstein5972d ago

I agree with you. It was the first thing I thought about. Most people don't have a bluray recorder or writer in their PC. So, how are they burning the games?

Blaze9295971d ago

Sure piracy plays a big part in hacked hardware but it's not just all about downloading free PS3 games (which I think is stupid as you pointed out). But also the homebrew community and all the extra stuff you will be allowed to do with your PS3. My PSP is HELLA more useful than a normal PSP becuase it was hacked.

Not always about the piracy. Downloading PS3 games just seems stupid. MGS4 and FF13 for example - who the hell wants to download nearly 50GB for ONE game and risk getting caught becuase you were downloading so much data for ONE game? That's dumb. Plus you'll need to burn it or store it on the HDD - better have one big HDD to hold PS3 games.

I'm not gonna lie though, I'd love to be able to rip all my PS2 games straight to my PS3's HDD for quick and easy access. Maybe might download a few PS2 games like the Naruto ones that were never released here. But PS3 games, no thanks.

ZombieNinjaPanda5971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

@DMason

Just to say that they did it, that's why I believe they went through the trouble. Because as of right now, pirating ps3 games is more expensive then actually buying them.

Actually, wasn't it already simple to pirate them? I remember a site way back when that gave instructions, but you had to fork out a ton of cash for a blue ray burner for your computer.

Edit:
@Blaze
Yeah gotta agree with you there. My psp is much better ever since I ran a custom firmware on it, though I do have to figure out how to update to the latest version :P

evrfighter5971d ago

sure a blu-ray burner and blu-rays are pricey but in the end they'll pay for themselves after you rip off about 10 or so games.

and 25gb of data is nothing nowadays to people like me who leave their pc on 24-7.

bpac1234567895971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

yeah even if this hack does work, its just not practical to use it. It will cost more to pirate your game than to just buy it from the store. Also I dont know too many people who have a connection fast enough to download 25 gigs of data in any reasonable amount of time. Ontop of that this hack wont work with the slim which is now the only ps3 system on the market.

Edit: But like the person above me said, i would appreciate a hack that aloud me to rip all my ps2 games to my ps3. or even run custom applications.

ReBurn5971d ago

You can get a Blu-ray burner for about $150 and 25 GB media for less than $7. 3 or 4 games and it's paid for. I don't condone it, but it is now cost effective. To save money people can wait a week for a torrent to download.

SilentNegotiator5971d ago

The PS3 has been hacked?

Sure, I believe such credible sources. lol

Pharoahking5971d ago

Those hackers are either foolish or just tight-fisted with their money ( if they have any at all!) You are right by saying, in a nutshell, it's too much work to hack a PS3. I wonder if these hackers have ANY clue that they're stealing, driving up the prices of new games, and making it hard for good gamers, like us to enjoy playing games.

n4f5971d ago

maybe it will become like the psp you just copy the iso on ur hdd
anyway i already have bd burner integrated with my laptop

IdleLeeSiuLung5971d ago

blu-ray burner and discs will get cheaper just like DVDs have. However, I wish banning, broken machine and bad karma on pirates!!!

darthv725971d ago

i am betting the majority of ps3 games dont really use the capacity like people think. In fact, when there are rips of 360 games it seems likely that the ps3 versions are just about equal in size. So why is it hard to think that ripping a ps3 game would amount to the same size as a dvd 360 ghame?

When looking at the first gen of ps2 games, they were on cd. I always wondered why sony didnt opt to have some of their ps3 games on dvd, at least for the third parties that make multiplat games.

When dvd first came out, not everyone had the burners. Now they are so cheap and the media is cheap. Blu will get there when more companies bring out the drives for pc and bring out the media at lower costs.

beardpapa5971d ago

25 gigs of data? That's easy with today's connection. On 4G tethering (haha i hope *cough Verizon cough*) that's nothing. Blu-ray burners are quite affordable too. They're much less than a few months to a year ago. And blanks are quite affordable considering the space you get per disc and the savings compared to getting the real game. $7-10 per disc vs ~$54-65 per game?

Sarick5971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

I do hope that they devise a way to bypass the copy protected saves system. Piracy is one thing but when a company go's out of it's way to harm the honest customers who aren't cheating or pirating then they've gone to far.

Some might complain about cheaters others are pointing fingers at crackers. In all honesty, I think the developers should've taken better steps before locking down copy protected saves to the console. After all 128bit encryption and linking saves to the PSN ID should be enough.

I don't support the piracy side but I do support hacking in a way that gives the customers back features developers have taken away from the honest gamer.

nbsmatambo5971d ago

bout time....
jeeez, its bin like 3, 4 yrs?
nd they call themselves pros lol

Guido5971d ago

That pirates of any kind are simply douche bags. Sorry, but to hack any device for the sake of playing free, stolen copies of games is beyond me. I say they can all rot for all I care.

sikbeta5971d ago

lol @ hackers

Even if they do:

·MGS4 = 50gb
·UC2 = 25gb
·FF13 = +25gb, for sure
·GOW Collection = 28gb
And so on...

The Happy Baby5971d ago

But if its true, this will increase hardware sales(new and used).
I can buy a used PS3 on CL for 200$ and a Bluray Burner for 100-150$.
It may seem like a huge investment---but with free games and online? I'd save hundreds of dollars every year.

Dark-vash5971d ago

I dont get people and 50GB MGS4...

It's true that it comes with a 50GB BD, but the iso file is around ~30GB...

And i'm 100% sure that most games in 25GB BD, when "scrubbed" will be a LOT less then that!

J8M7G5971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

Everyone thinks games will be too big to download. I just put a 51gb file in newsbin and it will take 2 hours and 5 mins.. For anyone that wants a free game thats not long to wait.

Edit: MGS4 is around 38gb on newzbin but atleast 3gb of that is pars.

5971d ago
vhero5971d ago

it doesnt work users on maxconsole where it was posted have posted that it doesn't work just like all other so called hacks. I think 360 fanboys want this more than anything in a strange but twisted way even though it would probably boost ps3 sales.

likedamaster5971d ago

It's nearly the same BS you have to go through to play ripped games for xbox 360. Sure, newer 360's can just get flashed but you still need a certain disc reader, a separate burner and specific blank discs, not to mention the original game because everyone knows it's so much faster to rent the game & rip it than to download it.

Unless you know someone who does this process for you and just sells you the game for cheap, its a drag either way. On top of all that, you still can't play online without one day getting banned. Just buy the game or at least wait for a price drop... or rent it.

N4BmpS5971d ago

I don't think the PS3 has been hacked, however even if it did those who have a PS3 should stick to buying the games. Developers work really hard(some of them)on their projects to make them look and play good on the PS3 console. Once apon a time my friends asked me a question, "if the PS3 was ever hacked would I download a game for free instead of buying it at a $60 price tag." I told them certain games...but now that I really think of it I wouldn't do it at all(not because I'm on N4G). I respect gaming and if the PS3's unhackability(don't think that's a real word) has something to do with its sales, that sucks. I don't think that's showing gaming respect. NOT COOL!! rant over(not really a rant) Thank You.

Mikeyy5971d ago

@Hellangelzx

What firmware are you using?
Last I check M33 hasnt updated since m33 5.01 or so, Darkalex doesnt update till he deems is absolutly necessary. When he does, all you need to do, is goto the Update section on the XMB, its built in :)

I think its the same with all CFW releases now.

Persistantthug5971d ago (Edited 5971d ago )

I live in the Bay Area (Silicon Valley), so if there was a such thing as a hacked PS3, you'd be able to find it on EBAY or Craigslist (both sites invented in the Bay Area btw).

Notice:
http://sfbay.craigslist.org...

There's not a single pirate-hacked PS3 in sight....not ever.

Tons of modded-hacked XBOX 360's though.
*shrug*

Qbanj695970d ago

It also needs a flux capacitor. Now where is anybody going to find one of those? Not only that, but somehow it has to maintain 88 mph while playing a hacked game.

WTF

mint royale5972d ago

it may help hardware sales but it would definately hinder software sales. The wii/360/DS/PSP have certainly seen lower software sales that they could have done without piracy. Sony needs more people to buy ps3 games not just pirate them.

R6ex5971d ago

As it is, there's already not enough games on the market for me to play. Gaming is cheap entertainment, but too few good games.

mfwahwah5971d ago

I don't care how pirates affect sales of anything.

I just flat out ****ing hate them for what they do. They're leeching, dirty, scum bags.

PELVIC THRUST ACTION5971d ago

Unless it's easy or cheap NOBODY is going to bother. 99% of people haven't even installed linux on their PS3s. Nonwithstanding the fact that Linux is hard as hell to use for most people and command line is not most peoples idea of a good time and takes a while to learn. Even if they have pirated it, the sheer difficulty of learning another OS which is mainly command line will turn most of people off.

Godmars2905971d ago

Thing with that option, its not possible in the PS3 slim since you can't install Linux on it.

Budg3tG4m3r5971d ago

torrent sites have lots of PS3 games to download and the numbers over the past few days have grown so i think ths is legit

PirateThom5971d ago

http://torrentz.com/search?...

Not a single "game" in 3 months and NOTHING confirmed working.

AuToFiRE5971d ago

uhhh linux doesnt ahve command line anymore, ive been using linux since 2007, sure its still there like command prompt in windows, but linux has more functionality with it, for instance 'apt install <program name here>' and it will install that program without you having to search the internet for it

so lrn2nix before you say its hard

PirateThom5971d ago

And, that's probably as far as they get. A handful of titles, lengthy workarounds for little more than to say "we did it", rather than widespread piracy.

I remain sceptical though, every single hack thus far as been faked and, I say, until there's proof this one is the same.

Godmars2905971d ago

Guess all they need now is a proliferation or BR burners. Hacks that will let you run games off the HDD or an external.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle14d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga22d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199222d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga22d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box22d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion21d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7222d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7522d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit22d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14922d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7722d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
