Rundlc: Alien Breed Evolution: Chapter One Review

Video game developers love the "one man army in space" angle. Dead Space immediately comes to mind, as do the Contra games and Alien Syndrome. Well, add another great one to the list with Alien Breed Evolution: Chapter One, the latest effort from Team 17.

In it, you're a poor soul trapped in the heart of a nearly-abandoned spaceship. A mysterious vessel has collided with yours, resulting in a sudden alien infestation. Locked and loaded with various weapons (including a shotgun, assault rifle and a pistol with unlimited ammunition), it's up to you to figure out a way off the ship. It's not easy, between the aliens that want to snack on you and the environmental dangers throughout, including fires and hazardous gases.

As the first chapter in the new trilogy, it’s up to Alien Breed: Evolution to create compelling enough story to keep the player interested between chapters. It does so with a comic strip style series of panels and some surprisingly laudable voice acting. There’s not much going on here that doesn’t fit easily into the typical science-fiction library, certainly nothing that competes on literary grounds with those attempting to push forward the medium as a story telling device, but regardless it’s an enjoyable tale for the most part; which is really the same as that which can be said about the game itself.
