Need for Speed meets Source Engine: Alpha Gameplay vid of SHIFT

The very first gameplay vid from the upcoming Source Engine Mod SHIFT.

Source Engine is outdated and not hat good.

toaster5987d ago

Source Engine is 5 years old still looks better than a lot of games. For it's time it was revolutionary, not in just graphics but physics.

With the new shiny graphics of 2009 and the coming decade Source Engine still stands strong. Pretty good for a 5 year old engine huh?

Baka-akaB5986d ago (Edited 5986d ago )

Source is great all right , but it's hardly new and uncommon ... ID and Epic are used to that too , and maybe crytek will once they dminish the required horsepower with cryengine 3 .

Most people dont realise that modern warfare 1 and 2 , and the treyarch game , are based on a modified Quake 3 engine . Even if he reason behind doesnt seems a good one , especially in MW2's case , it still a great feat .

Pretty much all of them stand the test of time , studios just had to stop jumping to the next thing all the time .

tdrules5986d ago

MW2 sold millions, but it doesn't have very good textures, bloom, HDR or ambient occlusion.
which is pretty damn ironic when a 5 year old engine can do it.

adriano9995986d ago (Edited 5986d ago )

i agree, but mw2 uses a 10 year old engine(ID Tech3 iirc)

LightofDarkness5986d ago

No, it doesn't. Only the original Call of Duty used the Quake 3 engine. Since CoD2 they've been using a proprietary engine they developed themselves in-house.

TheIneffableBob5986d ago

It's still branched off of the idTech 3 code base.

SilentNegotiator5986d ago

But it would be nice to see Source 2.0

They at least need to fix it up so that it stops freaking out when the environment moves. I've fallen through the elevator on L4D at least 3 times.

Baka-akaB5986d ago (Edited 5986d ago )

@tdrules

Q3 engine is quite old , more so than Source a still relatively "new" engine .

The only problem with MW's engine , is how they persisted with it in MW2 . Especially when they have been using quake engines for every call of duty already .

@LightofDarkness
Nope they have been using heavily modified Q3 engine . Just like Half life 1 ran on heavily modified Quake engine with the addition of adding stuff like skeletal animation and Direct3D support .

LightofDarkness5986d ago

"The Call of Duty series went from using a highly modified id Tech 3 engine, (based of the customized version by Splash Damage), to a totally new engine in its latest iteration."

From modswiki. Similar entries will be found everywhere on the web, the only reference used as proof I could find was some guy in a forum who was merely speculating. From just about every source I could find, they say that IWx.0 engine is completely proprietary (although it is mentioned that their BSP code is very similar to Q3s, but still original).

What a great engine!

It's really stood the test of time.

Baka-akaB5986d ago (Edited 5986d ago )

Anyway like i've been saying Quake engine was used from 96 till 2005 (condition zero and half life 1 repack)

Simon's Quest is better than Symphony.

If you're gonna troll, at least make a legitimate attempt.

Levii_92381d ago

Hot damn that's a good list. The only one i never played is AOE2 and i never finshed Chrono Trigger but it was damn good.

Speaking of what's old but holds up amazingly well and plays like a dream.. i played Symphony of the Night for the first time in 2019.. yep that's right. It became one of my favourite games of all time that i replay almost every year. I couldn't believe how good it was. That is almost impossible for me with newer games let alone older ones. Truly a special gem.

LG_Fox_Brazil380d ago

That's a pretty fucking great list

The only one I’d disagree with is doom. It shows its age badly I think. After 5 minutes of play these days you put it down.

One of my biggest art heroes. His work and vision were truly one of a kind, and he’s been a huge inspiration to my own work. Such a heartbreaking loss.

Deeeeznuuuts462d ago

Remember seeing Dishonored for the first time when it released, fell in love with the art style straight away, so striking! And because of it, still holds up and will for years to come, RIP Viktor

JEECE462d ago

Yep I remember seeing some of the earliest concept art for Dishonored and hearing that the art director of Half-Life 2 was working on it and being excited.

And you are absolutely right, each of those games (HL2 and Dishonored) has a distinct art style that stands the test of time.

Relientk77462d ago

So sad to hear this. I absolutely love the Dishonored series and love the world and art style. It looks great and unique. I'm still hoping for a Dishonored 3

rokos462d ago

RIP Viktor love your work

Ethereal462d ago

Damn... Dishonored has such amazing art. RIP.
