I would have to give it to Xbox because without it so much stuff we have today would be nonexistent . Sure Sony's name on playstation helped them sell a butt load but see that's all it did. Ton's of crap games and sad visuals. If Sony had there way PS3 wouldn't be out yet and online would be a fantasy.

I still have my launch PS2, and it works perfectly!

This console is just so beasty! In fact, I still have it hooked up to the TV in my room. It's a shame, I didn't buy all the great games for it, when it was cheap - no ICO :(

The PS2 started off with worse looking games than the Dreamcast, the PS2 hardly added any innovations (apart from the EyeToy) compared to the Dreamcast (which, despite selling fewer consoles, possibly still had more internet users than the PS2 and also had visual memory units, lightgun and a keyboard). The PS2 only came with 2 controller ports even though all other consoles had been launched with 4 controller ports as standard since the N64 four years before.

The PS2 had Gamecube hand me downs with Resident Evil 4 and Viewtiful Joe. Ico and Shadow of the collosus do look very good but they didn't sell all that well did they. Final Fantasy is a very popular series but not necessarily to all Western gamers. There were some really quirky looking games on the PS2 such as Gregory Horror Show but relatively few people talk about them. The Crash Bandicoot, Silent Hill, GTA and Devil May Cry series all ended up on the Xbox/Xbox360.

But I am going to add something in the PS2's defence. Sony held on to certain franchises at their peak e.g. Silent Hill 2/3, Devil May Cry 3 and then let them go multiformat once they were slightly on the wane compared to their predecessors e.g. Silent Hill 4 / Devil May Cry 4. Metal gear Solid 3 : Snake Eater also looks great.

Although the ability to play DVDs may have influenced some people at the time it's no longer the be all and end all as the Wii has shown.

It's difficult to justify the huge sales figures of the PS2 on number of games alone. The Dreamcast was robbed to some extent when you consider the first party games like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Seaman.

Previous generations when companies such as Atari and Panasonic tried to make it a 4 horse race suggest that the Xbox probably would not have taken off without the Dreamcast's demise. It also wouldn't have had certain Sega games that have helped it appeal more to the industry and long time gamers.

On this decade(actually it starts in 2011) my vote goes for now to the PS3 since I did not own a PS2/Xbox/Xbox360.

I was way too busy playing Everquest and then EQ2 to be care about PS2, GC or Xbox.

Best video games in the past 4 me were Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn and Snes.
PS1 ,N64 and DC had some amazing games but I still preffwer the 16bit era+Sega Saturn.

if you really think about it,its the ps1 which should be the console of the decade.I mean a new console came when everyone knew only sega and nintendo.it made the playstation brand as strong as we know it now.the jrpgs became a popular genre around the world because of it with FF7,xenogears,chrono cross,suikoden,etc...many popular games were born on that system.Metal gear solid (the solid series),Gran turismo,Pro evolution soccer (lets say winning elevn for those who know the japanese game),Tekken,Soul Edge (soul calibur now),street fighter alpha,most of snk games when those games were only on neo geo,resident evil,dino crisis,silent hill....I could even list more but this is enough to say that ps1 is truely the console of the decade with ps2 getting close and SNES as third ;)

but since i have a fully BC PS3, i'm gonna go with PS3 as the best console of the decade. lol. i get the best of 3 worlds! PS1 classics like FF Tactics, Castlevania: SOTN, MGS, etc. i get PS2 classics like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, MGS3, etc. and i get now PS3 classics like LBP, Uncharted series, and MGS4.

so yeah, thank you PS2 for being so awesome, and thank you BC PS3 for being able to play those awesome PS2 games.

I would say the Sega dreamcast. It was the first console to give you pure arcade graphics and games. Dreamcast was all about arcade gaming fun. sonic adventure 1&2, shenmue, marvel vs capcom 1&2, resident evil code veronica, Powerstone 1&2, soul calibur, jet grind radio,, grandia 2, skies of arcadia, phantasy star online, streetfighter double impact and 3rd strike, doa2, virtua fighter 3, sega rally 2, daytona usa, ikaruga, fighting vipers 2, D2, cosmic smash, rez, evil twin, half life, sof, under defeat, MSR project gotham racing, head hunter.

If PS2 ranks in at #1, then the PS3 must rank in somewhere around the high 40s.

Go Team PS2 :) I'm happy it won. I loved my Psone and then the PS2 was amaaazing. I work at Gamestop, and we still sell PS2s nonstop. It's ridic. It truly deserves the win, imo.

Then I would say the Wii simply because of how innovative it was/is to the current gaming industry. People hate it like it stole something from them and it has withstand all types of slander and media hate to taker over the industry as we know it today.

DS would be 3rd place on how it completely dominated the handheld industry and is on the verge of toppling PS2 as the most sold console in history.

Cannot wait until the next gen of consoles to see how things will play out for Sony and Nintendo.

In terms of staying power I would say the PS2 deserves the title. Tons were sold, it moved tons of software and it had widespread appeal. So I have to agree there.

In terms of innovation? I hate to say it, but I don't really think there was tons of innovation in gaming over the last decade. People might think the Wii was innovative because of motion control, but I don't think it was. I think it reminded us all what was fun about pretty much every console before online gaming took over, and that simplicity and playing side by side with friends can be far more entertaining than flashy graphics and horsepower.

I hope the next decade brings true innovation instead of just horsepower upgrades to the same old formula. We'll see.

I have to break away from the norm and say that the original Xbox was my console of the decade. Thanks to titles like KOTOR and Morrorwind.

Hm, i'd say 360, but only because it managed to get me to buy it to replace my pc gaming with online FPS, voice chat and HD resolutions.

I can agree with this assessment. The PlayStation 2 has, in many ways, also invented the concept of the "Home entertainment hub" console. Sure, it doesn't have the vast online capabilities of the Xbox or its successor, but it laid the ground work of a video game console doing more than just gaming that so many others follow to this day.

It also was the first game platform designed, aesthetically, to be placed vertically or horizontally in the living room.

These two thing have been copied by every successive video game console since.

I am the one who wrote the post over at HBG.

First I want to say, it's great to see people discussing and sharing their opinions about the post. Agree or Disagree it's great to see people talking about it and sharing their opinions.

If I had to pick my favorite console from this last decade, I would go with either the Xbox 360 or PS3. Both have done great things in the last 4-5 years and will continue to do great things into the next generation.

When writing the post, I looked at this from a standpoint of what did the most in the last 10 years and what system had accomplished remarkable things. I left all my personal feelings out and went based on all the facts.

It was a hard choice to make given each console has done so much

Dreamcast - Amazing 3d graphics (at the time) and Online play

GameCube - Good Old Nintendo Had some killer apps, but not enough

Xbox - Powerful console, a few killer apps, and great online service.

PS3 - Cell processor, Blu-Ray, Media, and Great exclusives, "HD"

Xbox 360 - Online, Media, Great games, "HD"

Wii - Motion Contoller

The Reason I went with the PS2 was because when you think about it, the PS2 not only dominated it's generation, but it's "staying power" is phenomenal. It's still selling, still being played, and it's STILL here! Original Xbox, Gamecube, and Dreamcast are all long gone. But PS2 is still going (albeit probably on life support now).

Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube, Wii, PS3, 360 are all great consoles and had their own accomplishments, but they didn't accomplish what the PS2 has. The PS2 just made sense for Console of the Decade. Despite my personal feelings of either PS3 or Xbox 360, and oh boy, could you imagine if it was one of those two? Fanboy War...

No matter if the fanboys cant admit it Xbox 360 was the first next-gen console and the first with HD output (maybe not the first with HDMI port).....

Anyway PS2 surely brought some gr8 games like FFX and MGS 3

2. wii - bought all the casuals to gaming with motion controls
3. 360 - first to bring online and HD gaming to the mass public

Each of those consoles brought something new and innovated in some way.

Xbox, PS3 and 360 may be amazing consoles, but they have just iterated on previous generations/features. You could argue that the PS3 brought Blu-Ray to the masses, but that's not as important as the effect the PS2 had bringing DVD to the people. And the Xbox may have had great online services, but the Dreamcast did it first. And the 360 may have introduced HD gaming to consoles, but looking at the recent stats that many people are STILL playing on SD TV's dilutes the impact it had.

For it's huge game library and robust strength in the worldwide market. But despite being pulled and released in '99, the Dreamcast for me wins hands down. Dreamcast was simply a fun pick up and play machine, nothing else but a GAMES console. Many would agree that was perhaps what made it struggle, but you cant deny its brilliance.

I could care less seeing as how I own all the major consoles of this decade, but the ps2 does deserve the title.

pretty sad to see so many people arguing over second place. Always the 360 versus the PS3. What a sad bunch. This really is all about 1st place and thats clearly the PS2. Why the hell even bring the other 2 into it. They both got a very long way to go to even stand in the shadow of the PS2.

if we are going to judge wich one is the console of the decade because of sales... then PS2 is the console but if we judge this by wich one move the industry into the future then the big black Xbox is the one.

Because of the Xbox we now have online gaming, a hdd, dlc and a social network.

Totally understand why the PS2 won..

But personally my best console experience this decade came from the Dreamcast.. Great games from the go, and online.. I remember i didn't feel that impressed with the PS2 at the beginning, but it needed some time, and the it became great, but the DC did so that the PS2 wasn't a giant leap for me..

When I was diehard nintendo fan and n64 I thought was waaaay better than playstation. Then GameCube came along and ps2 and I bought a gamecube over a ps2.... I cried a year later for a ps2 lol when Socom hit the stores. Talking headset online mode voice response I think that was the game that really stood out to me that set the playstation apart.

Also look how much damage the ps2 did coming a year early. MS thought they come out a year early this time and you almost would have never known that they did 4 years later. Playstation will be a titan for years to come.

Its success was limited to the games world- as a games console it was amazing, yes.

The Wii however, transcended the games world. It could easily be top of the list for best entertainment/electronics device of the decade, let alone best games console!

The Wii is up there with the Ipod when it comes to consumer electronics that made a massive impact on the industry and our culture. It seems many of you are not willing to acknowledge that.

That said, when you cast your mind back on the PS2, it doesn't compare. Sighting PS2 as games console of the last decade is extremely short sighted. Sentimental even.

The real games console of the decade is the Wii.

Well there's nothing that can compare to the PS2 and that's also a console that lasted a decade. Lets just skip all the flaming and just agree that the PS2 trounced every console of its time.

The PS2 was the second console I bought for myself when it came out. I had fun playing GTA 3, Vice City, God Of War, and other games that would come along. Even though I own a couple of the newer consoles, I still find time to play my PS2.

i can count the crashes ive experienced on 1 hand, had the ps2 from launch "£400" (only had that demo disc for a while cause i was broke :P)

it still fascinates me today that microsoft has swooped in from nowhere and bought up all the developers and pointed them at consoles while at the same time relasing the most hastily bungeled console ever (49% failure rate?) this generation has set back a decade in itself.

i was playing mods for quake 2 with better production value than console games today.

I had the PS2 and yes it was great, but for me it only represents the pinnacle of the way gaming was. I sold it and was basically done with gaming- there was nothing truly new or exciting about the experiences anymore.

But then the wii came along and i couldn't resist it. Yes, it did present some old ideas but with a new control method, but at least it was doing something genuinely not done before. And obviously i was not the only one who's imagination was captured, as the success of the wii speaks volumes.

Sony and Microsoft are introducing their own 'interpretations' to the market, so what does that say to you? Will the wii still be seen as a gimmick by the 'hardcore' when they have no choice but to use motion controller themselves? The impact of the wii on gaming is greater than the impact the ps2 had/has. As i said before, the wii's impact is felt beyond gaming.

Its not about personal opinion really, its just accepting the truth. Giving credit where it is due, acknowledging that the games console of the decade is the wii whether you like it or not. In 10/20 years time, that will be impossible to deny.

PS2 is the best console of the decade hands down. Its legacy is legendary.
