as far as i see it ps3 has and is been next gen its the only platform period pushing cgi level visuals ingame thats what next gen means, to a pc fan next gen means wanna be photorealism

If you're just talking about graphics and some obscure expensive peripherals, which is what the article discussed, then yes, somewhere there will be much more "next-gen" games on PC. However, if you're talking about innovation in gameplay, usability, new ways of providing a narrative, style, etc., then you're talking about each console on the market right now, possibly with the exception of PSP/DS, which seem to have hit a plateau and should probably see an upgrade first.

This is the generation of refinement. Yes, a lot of the mechanics that are happening in games right now could have happened on a previous console, but the games are now bigger, better-organized, more refined, and have answered a lot of the gripes that people had with games in the previous generation. It's great that developers have had this much time with the current consoles - they're beginning to make great games instead of starter engines with a game attached (see Assassin's Creed vs. Assassin's Creed 2, or Uncharted 1 vs. 2 for example).

So yeah, if you're pumped about how awesome Crysis 2 is going to look, or if you're wondering how that one weird version of that one PC game will look with a Real 3d upgrade regardless of controls, PC is your "next-gen" console. If you're a bit more interested in innovation, I'd look everywhere instead.

The problem I see with PC gaming is the community... not the people but the interface... to run game x you require windows live to run game y you need steam to run game z you have to use game z's friends list.

As of yet there is no. BUY THIS GAME AND IT'LL WORK ON STEAM no matter the game. But with onlive that'll all change... online will also remove the need to upgrade or download and PC gaming will move even higher.

Finally, someone that gets it. PC is and always be superior for gaming. Graphics, multiplayer, multi-function, chat, etc. is always better on a PC. The single drawback is cost.

PCs can also be considered the new last-gen, too.

The percentage of people out there who buy equipment to play games - that includes consoles, handhelds and PCs - are not in it for the Extreme PC Gaming experience.

To consider the PC as the next gen platform would also consider it the biggest failure as well as the number of owners of these ultra-powerful PCs is extremely low, much lower than the amount of people who bought Sega's last console which actually killed off that companies exploits in hardware.

PC gaming in general will remain huge, but what these people are talking about, PCs being the most powerful platform, I am sorry to say the reality of this, is not true. There are noweher near enough PCs out there as powerful as PS3 to define the whole of PC gaming.

That fact is that relatively speaking, nobody is willing to spend the vast sums of money to make a PC capable of out-muscling the more powerful consoles. They simply cannot afford to do this.

If 360, Wii or PS3 sold as little as these PCs which are more powerful than the aforementioned consoles, then the consoles would be deemed a failure and that is how the market works.

These hardcore PC people never quit. If PC is the so-called "new next gen", then why are almost all developers out there putting most of their resources into console games and less resources into PC games?

50GB games have been made for PS3 blu ray disks already.
Sure PCs have more power but developers can't use the full power cause not everyone has a very new up to date gaming PC.
Say 80 % of people have 2 cores the developers will make 2 CPU cores a min to run the game.

With PS3 it has over 4 CPU cores they can also each render graphics just like the RSX graphics card this is rare for other CPUs to do. 50GB space for high res textures. developers can unlock the full power of the ps3 and games are looking better and better.
MGS4, Killzone 2, Uncharted 2, and soon Heavy Rain that is on a new graphics level.

PS3 = tap into full cell CPU power (cell used in super computers)
PC = has the power but developers can't use full if customers don't have E.G. 2010 graphics card and CPU.

Fact is, NO platform...console OR pc... has a distinct edge over the other. Both consoles and pc platforms have limitations, that force devs to make tough choices...ultimately limiting their final product. With pc, it's the wide range of hardware configs they have to dev for, then try to find a happy medium where the largest % of gamers can enjoy their game. With consoles, that's not an issue AT ALL...but they have out-of-the-box limitations that force the tough decisions from the very beginning; lack of sufficient RAM being the biggest problem.

In the end, it really comes down to the preferences of each gamer...IF they have one; if you play games on consoles AND pc, then you have no worries at all. Personally, I simply can't stand keyboard + mouse...never have, never will. I have a rig that runs Crysis on medium, at 30 fps...but didn't bother playing it until they patched it to work properly with the 360 controller. That's just my preference...and pc fanboys who want to start their "But keyboard/mouse is teh superior!" BS can promptly kiss my lily white behind. It's also MUCH simpler to game on a console: put the disc in , give it a minute to load...and you're playing. That's it. No need to check your hardware config, system settings, install drivers, install the game....nothing. Even if there's an update, it's done automatically, and takes 5-10 seconds. PC gaming is what it is...but to pretend it somehow renders console gaming useless, or redundant, is just plain stupid. Period.

Some people seriously mis-understand the term 'next gen', all it means is that we have entered a new generation of consoles.

To say that the PS3, 360 and Wii aren't as next generation as PCs doesn't make any sense because they ARE next generation consoles.

They're worlds apart. PC gamers shouldn't be happy that they're being compared to consoles, they should be offended. PC's are, will, and should always be capable of more than consoles because they are highly customizable. I don't see why PC gamers get so defensive, no one ever said that consoles were better than PC, no one ever said that PC's wouldn't take the lead on innovation; those who are saying that in posts to this article are only doing so because they've been challenged to. Sure, every once in a while you hear some meathead say PC is dead, but those people clearly don't understand anything about how games work, since PC can never die, since it will always be able to emulate whatever anything else does, since that's what PC's do, they emulate things (and I don't mean just in terms of games, I mean, technologically that's what computers do in a fundamental way).

As far as innovation is concerned though, I'd have to say that the PS3 has advanced quite a few things. Total destructibility is an overrated feature, not everything is destructible in reality, and I don't want to destroy everything but as the article points out, that much has been achieved by Red Faction for both Xbox and PS3. Avatar on PS3 and a few other games are already in 3D. Games like Demon's Souls, LBP and Heavy Rain are pushing game play forward, though perhaps not in anyway that couldn't also be done on PC. Given that most games out for PC come to console and vice versa, it's really pointless to say that one format will be the bedrock of innovation, since all of them usually advance simultaneously. It comes down to the studios and developers, not the formats.

Bottom line though, the PS3 is currently capable of graphics and gameplay of nearly any PC game on the market today, including Crysis, it's just a matter of reprogramming the game to maximize it's use of PS3 resources rather than simply trying to emulate the PC version on the PS3. Regardless, there will undoubtedly be a PC game that does outdo anything that consoles are capable of before the end of this generation, but who cares, since only a handful of people will have a PC capable of running it. My personal bottom line though, I like to sit back on the couch at a distance and play games on my HDTV, and Idon't have the cash to invest in what would be necessary to make the same thing possible for my PC. I feel like there's something a little unhealthy about sitting so close to my PC and staring at it so intently for hours on end, I know this is just me, but it makes me claustrophobic.

@ Pandamobile: Garry's mod isn't really much of a game and you can hardly draw comparisons between it and LBP. You have a serious case of blowing out your neighbors candle to make your shine brighter. You just seem desperate dude, get a grip.

You can buy a new GPU that is under $150 that will play 90% of games at high detail and look better then the Console version OF THAT SAME GAME.
The argument that PC's have to cost THOUSANDS to play games is foolish.
The 8800GTX and dual GPU's of lat generation are miles faster then the PS3 or Xbox360 and those GPU's cost $100+ now.

All the PC fanboys neglect one thing that is important with gaming. The games on PS3, XBOX360 and even the Wii are so much better than anything on PC when it comes to fun and new ideas. PC gamers only care about Frames per second and AA, then they proceed to pirate all the games

BUT if it were not for the PC's we wouldn't have any Video Games. And it is a known fact that PC are always on the upgrade, and it would only be natural for it to outperform the consoles that are available but the cost to own such a marvelous machine is really high no matter how you put it buying a video game is easier and less of headache (from a requirement side)you buy it it will work end of story.

the only game that I might ever bother to play on console is the Uncharted series and maybe Metal Gear S4 - but I won't fork out €300 for a console, apart from that I hate the fact that there is absolutely no option for modding on the consoles, personally I do like to twink my experiences, single-player wise mostly - Fallout3

PC + Console gaming is a luxury I'm pretty happy to have, I buy ALL the multiplatforms on the PC because of things like M/KB(still have 360 controller if I want), 8x AA, V-sync(probably the most important reason), free multiplayer(ps3 props too), dedicated servers(if you care about competition you don't play on listen servers), 1080p resolution on EVERYTHING, and downright freedom(MS can't tell me I cannot play with a G27 because this and that.

Ok so maybe MS is the problem, PS3 is not a bad system, I'm glad Sony has taken the stance they have so far.

PC is evolving, Single player only games are VERY VERY rare on PC, its a big no no, PC is primarily a multiplayer platform, MMO aspects are taking over a lot of games, just look at APB and Global Agenda.

Bottom line, if you are a hardcore competitive gamer, and probably someone who loves RTS games, you own a gaming PC.

If you only own a console, you're either piss-ass broke, 12 years old, in denial, or a just a casual gamer.

I do both, I love my PS3 and Xbox for the few good exclusives, but there is never anything that holds my attention for long because the long term gaming is on PC, except GT5p(can't help but wish it was on PC for some better gfx though =( )

Stop hating on the PC platform, get yourself something for $600 and nice M/KB setup and don't look back.

Right now, Consoles have the upperhand, but in a couple of years, PC will comeback with a vengeance.

To me the difference is the limitations. Consoles have several limitations that don't really improve games. It is mostly visual. Games made for PC have a bigger advancement in game play and other areas.

I hope more companies start making more PC games and not just ports.

Consoles have brought gaming to the masses, that`s what they have done for next gen gaming. Not everyone uses their PC for gaming. It also helps the developers out by making their games harder to pirate (no doubt it`s easier to pirate games on PC).

So I think consoles have saved next-gen gaming and they will continue to do so. Of course PC will always push the barriers but consoles are the ultimate gaming devices.

Dont get me wrong, I have a PS3 and a 360, but I am aware they will be trash in 3 years tops. I have 3 PC's and a laptop. 2 of them can max out crysis, 1 is 3 years old, the other is 1.5 years old. PC number 3(The old one) is for web surfing, my girlfriends mp3 stuff, video chat with relatives and acts as an office comp. It is 5 years old and will probably be in use another 3 or 4 till I give it away. The laptop is for her online classes or whatever. Also pooping while reading online...lol.

My Gaming pc is connected to my 50" Plasma, along with my 360 and PS3. I use a dvi to hdmi with optical audio right to my receiver out of the mobo. They can all be connected to whatever you feel like. And I hate to break it to you but the only....the ONLY place console gaming is more popular is the USA. Everywhere else in the world, people game on PC's. Plus the PC gaming industry generates more cash than all 3 consoles combined...don't forget Microsoft and Sony are still, after 3 to 4 years, selling their hardware at a loss. They want you to think exactly as you do... that there is still alot of life left in those consoles...which, I hate to say...there is not. World of warcraft makes over 200 MILLION a MONTH!! I just want everyone to know what they are missing...I play consoles too...From an economic standpoint you could make a gaming rig outta what your typing on now (provided it's not a laptop or a dirty dirty mac) by putting a 100 to 200 dollar GPU in it and play crysis or far cry2 or company of heroes...anything. Plus with all the free games, game trials(MMO"S mostly) mods for games like oblivion, neverwinter nights, dragon age....you could buy 3 games you love and play endless free content for YEARS. I'm not bashing anyone...consoles are great...they are just... limited...I beat uncharted in like 3 or 4 days and had a BLAST,... I just wish they released mod tools for it so I could STILL play it.

well not only are microsoft and sony in red still. With both of them in losses around the 2-4billion mark. These losses wont be recovered until the next gen, when they will end up making even more losses.

looking at the above list i played all for the nay sayers saying pc doesnt have any games well i dunno what to tell em.

I played all the above games in true hd far superior fps then any console can manage. However the key here is had i bought so many games on consoles i would have ended up spending around 300-400usd extra just on games in 1 year. my next year of gaming would probably be the same. which would bring that figure upto 700-800usd (thats about the price of a pc gaming rig).

Lets not forget the super expensive accessories consoles like the xbox360 require you to buy along with the online charges. It all adds up in the end.

by the time this console gen ends thousands worth of $'s games would have been bought. only difference is a pc gamer wont have to worry about compatibility issues when the new gen comes, console gamers on the other hand will probably be paying for releases.

i agree with you completely its about the games you want to play. However when you look at the console exclusives there may only be a handful of games that you really want to play. Most of the games are multiplat and those just run better and cheaper on the pc.

from a cost perspective its better to play the exclusives on the console and all multiplats on the pc, you'd end up saving alot of money and you'd get a superior experience.

If you can afford a PC plus one console, then go for PS3. This is the tune most PS3 fanboys are singing, PC + PS3 > PC + Xbox 360. Of course, that's assuming "most" people can afford or have the time for a gaming PC.

However, if you cannot afford a gaming PC, (which MOST people really can't; most people just don't want spend that kind of money or time,) i.e., if you can afford only ONE console, then for Xbox 360. Xbox 360 exclusives + semi-exclusives > PS3 exclusives. That's if you don't have or don't want a gaming PC. That's Microsoft's strategy: target gamers who does not have/want a gaming PC and want only ONE console. In this particular scenario, Xbox 360 > PS3.

It's time to wake up PC users, PC gaming is dying because of piracy, now Game developers are focusing more and more on consoles, and people prefer playing on consoles because they are dedicated to the purpose they want them for.

Pc gaming changes too often. that is the main reason i dont get into it. i like having something i know isnt going to change for 4+ yrs, even if it is aging.

But.. you have to spend $1K a year just to keep up with the latest stuff so you can play all the latest games??? F that.

This is why consoles will always rule the PC. Cheaper and a one time fee.. plus games (unless your on XBL, then a monthly fee to play online)(and maybe on PSN soon too).

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
