PS3: Offline – It's So Much Better

TheSixthAxis: I'm a big fan of the PlayStation Network. Since the PS3's launch, via a delicate but powerful combination of gradual firmware updates and some hard work from SCEE with regards to the actual Store, the PSN has become a force to be reckoned with, especially as it's (currently) free. However, since moving home midway through December and the inability of some companies to maintain a decent broadband connection, I've been off the grid.

The area I'm now in doesn't have a 3G mobile network, and barely manages 2G according to my Hero, so although I can share the 'phone's connection with the PS3 it's not going to let me connect to the Network in any reasonable capacity. At first, I thought this would be terrible – I'd not be able to download whatever's on the Store and I wouldn't be able to see what my friends are playing at any given time. Actually, as it happens, it's been a revelation.

huh... The psn should be online always!

himdeel5991d ago (Edited 5991d ago )

...but I do understand greatly his points. When I didn't have many online games I enjoyed the single player games I had a great deal. Even to this day I play Killzone 2 just as much single player as I do online. Heavenly Sword is another great single player game I've been playing on Hell Mode.

I think the only difference between people who play online a lot and those that don't is their friends list. The people I know that don't play online games have very small friends list with close friends and family. The people I know that play online games have massive list. The moment I turn on my PS3 I get messages from folks to join games in progress or a message to join a game later.

Either way there's plenty to enjoy online and offline with either console.

A Cupcake for Gabe5991d ago

My online is used to keep up with friends. Of course you need PSN online to download games, vids, content, more.

If you don't want to play online you don't have too though. It's good to know that on PS3, you get tons of great SP experiences. MP is nice, but without the SP, it's not really anything.(MAG, WARKHAWK, and SOCOM of course are exceptions being MP only...lol and MMOs and stuff)

table5991d ago (Edited 5991d ago )

I think the ps3 offers the best offline experience of the 3 consoles. It has some fantastic single player oriented games like uncharted/infamous/MGS etc with a lot more to come(GoW/Heavy Rain/GT5) and of course you can watch blu-ray movies. 360 has great online competitive games but doesn't offer the same amount of quality offline games like ps3(might change with Splinter Cell and Alan Wake) and it doesn't play blu-ray. The wii has some social games to play with others but only offers a game console nothing more. The ps3 gives you that all round experience.

deadreckoning6665991d ago (Edited 5991d ago )

Well, I use my PS3 mostly for watching porn and watching free episodes of Lost and Dexter. For that I need the Internet Browser and you don't have to be logged on to PSN to use the Internet Browser.

I don't need PSN to listen to my music
I don't need PSN to watch Blu-rays
I don't need PSN to look at my photos
I don't need PSN to play GOW3 or Heavy Rain.

I need PSN to play KZ2 online, but I definetly spend more time OFF PSN than ON PSN. Thats for sure.

@ToastMan- I think you can just download PSN games off Amazon and then transfer them to ur PS3. U don't have to be on PSN on your PS3 to download PSN games. Me personally, I love playing online but single player should always be the first priority in my mind. In single player games ur given more freedom in the sense that you can go through a game in your own pace.

ToastyMcNibbles5991d ago

lmao i love how nonchalant deadreckoning is when mentioning some of the uses of his PS3 haha i couldnt help but crack up when i read "Well, I use my PS3 mostly for watching porn and watching free episodes of Lost and Dexter." that was awesome

but on topic it almost seems like PSN/XBL is a necessity nowadays... back in 07 when i got my PS3 i was content without playing online but once i finally started with resistance: fall of man i never looked back but that doesnt mean i'd slit my wrists with no online play.. i've always been the single player kind of gamer.. i enjoy the single player experience and would gladly choose it over multiplayer anyday

the biggest issue i would have with no online connectivity would be the fact that i wouldnt be able to purchase and download games as im very very big into downloading games like pixeljunk shooter, fat princess, wipeout hd etc.

Xbox360 : Online - It's always better

Budg3tG4m3r5991d ago

PSN is always online for me accept when I'm using my 360. I can't have both online, not enough bandwidth for both. It doen't matter anyway becuase I do most of my online gaming on the 360 and most of my offline gaming on my PS3. I'm not here to say Live is better than PSN (not a fanboy) but all my friends are on live, and I get to listen to music while playing (damn you MS). Only had a PS3 since Oct so that could change over time, I'll see what it's like this time next year.

FACTUAL evidence5990d ago

but, this article was trash...lmao. Online will ALWAYS be better than offline...trust me i know. Not only that but, all he have to do if turn off notifications...he won't get all those annoying pop ins. TBH, i love the notifications....you would too if you were in my shoes...yup just having a good internet service for almost a year now....

I have my ps3 hooked up to the internet but i never play online games. I'm not a competitive person and online mp doesn't interest me in the slightest. Sometimes it's nice, to just log off or turn off the notifications and just lose yourself inside the game.

Dandiego5991d ago

I have both systems and anyone who has played COD 4 or MW 2 on both systems can tell you there is a much higher caliber of players on 360. I played many many hours online so I expect people to disagree here but reality is those players have never played on both systems and are not competitive players such as myself. TRUST ME THERE IS MORE COMPETITION ON 360 and since you have to buy a wifi adapter there arent that many. There is a G receiver in the PS3 so the high percentage of players that use wifi lag like crazy and advance 3 meters at a time in any shooter.

BWS19825990d ago

if you're only judging someone's "socialization skills" via their online gaming habits, I think you're the one with an issue. No offense, but that's a naive way to think. Maybe some of us are playing most games per single player only, and socializing in real life instead? Maybe some of us have met some online "personalities" that have put us off from gaming online much. Either way, that's an baseless blanket statement.

Personally I fall in the middle. Online is great to have, but it's sometimes just preferable to play locally if you want multiplayer. I bought Left 4 Dead 1 cheap JUST for single player. I've never played a single match online with MW 1, and don't care to. I am happy gaming just that way. I much prefer the local multiplayer at this stage, but plan to get more into some online games in the future when I have some other stuff in life out of the way.

For now, I play with people in the same room and the fact I'm content can be judged all day long, but it won't change.

romemac75990d ago

1."I have both systems and anyone who has played COD 4 or MW 2 on both systems can tell you there is a much higher caliber of players on 360"

why? becuz u said so? i also have both system and there high caliber gamer on both.

2."I played many many hours online so I expect people to disagree here but reality is those players have never played on both systems and are not competitive players such as myself. TRUST ME THERE IS MORE COMPETITION ON 360 and since you have to buy a wifi adapter there arent that many. There is a G receiver in the PS3 so the high percentage of players that use wifi lag like crazy and advance 3 meters at a time in any shooter."

plz dude, wtf are u talking about? really cod4 and mw2 lags just as bad on both system. i have 8 days log into cod mw2 and at top 5000 of 5 million on the ps3 bro and also owned cod4 for both system. i seen high caliber player on both too, so plz stop talking s$&t and making this into some fanboy thing.

Dandiego5990d ago

WTF are you talking about every body on PS3 plays with WIFI since its built in (It's not an N but a G BTW)... this is slower no online player plays wifi they are hooked up directly. 2nd there are twice the ammount of players in MW2 on xbox 360 therefore the caliber is WAY higer... Try stuff before judging since its quite apparent you have no idea what you are talking about. I had a friend of mine that has only the PS3 come over to my place to try MW2 on 360 and he couldn't beleive how harder it was.

BWS19825990d ago (Edited 5990d ago )

there is also an Ethernet port on the PS3 for one thing, and secondly, I am 99.9% sure the 360's most common Wifi adapter out there being used was also a G receiver, so that argument holds no water (they're both G receivers). They have a newer N receiver that JUST came out.

What is "how harder"??

I don't even play online with MW, but I'd trust the person who's played on both and ranks well, to be honest.

Dandiego5990d ago

I'VE played both and I rank better on PS3 my ratio is a full .25 higher... Its easier because it has less players and competitive players are on 360 due to the more solid servers on xbox LIVE. I'm not saying this as a fanboy just trying to make a point that PS3 has great single player games (more on the way in GOW) but 360 is the machine for online. My 2nd point about the wifi is that the PS3 has it built in therefore people use it more this makes for laggy games. On the 360 most people didn't buy the adapter so they are hooked up directly (the way online games should be played). BOTH games are identical EXCEPT for online where live ranks MUCH better... sorry for the PS3 fans out there but its the truth.

I don't hold stock in Microsoft or Sony like many people here (or so it seems) and if the PS3 version was more solid I'd tell it how it is!

PISSIO5991d ago

Agree.

I never play online with PS3 because the service is very ugly.

PS3 offline, is the way.

A Cupcake for Gabe5991d ago (Edited 5991d ago )

no need for that. PSN and LIVE lag due to people internet connections. But only with LIVE, will your internet lag on your fast connection, cause PSN uses dedicated servers and the 360 hosts of the console. So There's really benefits of both.

EDIT: Some people just love their 360s

Lifendz5991d ago

I would agree if this were still 2006/early 2007. The PSN interface is very sleek and easy to operate. Not sure what you're talking about.

Hellsvacancy5991d ago (Edited 5991d ago )

Pissios just lookin 2-b ignored

Theres nothin wrong wid the PSN it does EXACTLY wot its supposed 2, i hav NO complaints about it at all, but if i had 2 pay 4-it there would b a couple of minor things worth mentionin

YogiBear5991d ago

The PSN is sleeker and sexier than your screen name, that's for damn sure.

Automat5991d ago

But... where did your bubbles go ?

How fitting how his handle is PISSIO... lol

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle25d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga33d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199233d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga33d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman33d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box33d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion33d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7233d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7533d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit33d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14933d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7733d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
